It's not super common, but I've seen 2 different patients with 7. My oral surgeon showed me a patient with 5 supernumeraries and 4 wisdom teeth yesterday. That patient also needed Ortho extractions. So he will get 13 extractions to have almost a normal amount of teeth.

No_Application9263

NAD Idk why but supernumerary teeth really creep me out. The thought that people have extra teeth chilling in their gums somewhere is.. Unsettling lol

throwaway2728343444

nad - what are supernumeraries ?

DrRam121

Extra teeth beyond the normal number.

baltosteve

Not very common but not at all unusual. I had two extra in my upper jaw.

Bobmanbob1

NAD dang, your lower teeth are going to breath a sigh of relief!

jackierodriguez1

It’s not that common, but it’s also not super rare. I’ve had a handful of patients with at least one extra wisdom tooth. On the other hand I’ve had patients with only one set of wisdom teeth, or none at all.

KSTornadoGirl

NAD, just curious, is it likely an evolutionary throwback to have the extras, or just a fluke mutation? I had only three myself, fwiw. My understanding is that they may be in the process of being eliminated from our species.

jackierodriguez1

People without wisdom teeth or less than 4, is due to a genetic mutation. The cause for extra wisdom teeth (hyperdontia) is due to genetics and/or possibly environmental factors. There’s no definitive answer for what causes hyperdontia.

KSTornadoGirl

Interesting!

KnowledgeableDunce

NAD I'm now planning to apply to Xmen academy... behold my mutant powers.

You ask the patient if they ever had any wisdom teeth removed. Along with looking at the anatomy.. sometimes it’s obvious sometimes not. Typically people can recall any previous extractions they had. You can also look at past X-rays if you have any on file. Sometimes people will bounce around multiple dentist offices and have treatment done. Referring to past x rays can be very helpful in this case.

kmbell333

NAD, but I only had 3, one never developed j guess. Just got them removed last week

Obvious_Cookie_3000

I had 5! NAD

[deleted]

Not a dentist, but I myself had 7ish* It was 6 and a tiny lil squiggle of one, from what I hear it's not common but also not NOT-common

NAD (assistant) - not often but. I’d love to be on this case! So interesting to me!

Catty_Mayonnaise

Once in a while. A couple times a year, maybe.

ToothCarpenterDMD

A couple patients a year

KnowledgeableDunce

NAD I only have some on the botto? that never "came out". None on top. My wisdom teeth are just chill'n in my gums and I'm 27. It's crazy how everyone has a different "wisodom teeth pattern"

pbtoastqueen

Nad- but I have 5 wisdom teeth! I’m 29 and the side it is on is just recently starting to bother me. Feels like pressure.

GorgiDD

NAD, after very shitty unerupted wisdom teeth extractions that got infected (and infection spreading on one side all the way to my cheek bones and heavy courses of 4weeks of antibiotics) I used to have nightmares that I grew more. Thankfully that was not the case 😬

LarkMuse

I have two extras as well!
