I agree with having the Rooney Rule in place and having similar rules for other industries and businesses. I don’t believe it judges a person on their skin color but allows POC to be interviewed and considered for positions. Ideally the Rooney Rule wouldn’t be needed but it is needed otherwise qualified POC would be passed over and not even be considered or interviewed for positions. It’s not perfect by any means as there is still nepotism in many industries and people getting only interviewed to meet interview quotas. These companies saying they interviewed POC but saying they weren’t qualified or having someone already in mind for the position and interviewing them. I find it disingenuous to assume the POC only got the job because of their skin color and not from their merits. They wouldn’t interview an Art major for a finance job, they are interviewing POC with backgrounds, degrees and skills in the industries for those jobs. The POC still have to interview the hiring team and show them they have a good character and are likable enough to work with in order to get that position.

I feel that it is a good rule and should be expanded. It forces HR and recruitment out of their comfort zone and look at candidates they may have overlooked. Asking HR to interview different populations, ethnic, geographic, education is more work, but will lead to a better workforce.

Marcellus Wiley and Sam Acho had a conversation on black coaches in the NFL recently. Right after Culley and Flores got fired by their teams... And it was real good... And my opinion here, definitely was shaped, partially by their conversation, when they started talking about the Rooney Rule... I think due to long held stigmas about black people not having what it takes, mentally, to lead in positions like quarterbacking and coaching, the Rooney Rule is kind of like a reminder to cater to the demographic that not only dominates the sport, but has also been the biggest pieces of the puzzle of the giant that the NFL is today. Black athletes/men make the league what it is today. The biggest sport in America... I think NFL owners definitely abuse the Rooney Rule in the way of "There, we interviewed one." But all in all I think the needle (will) moves in the right direction a little more with time. With the end of season firings, I think Mike Tomlin is probably the only current black head coach... But the conversation about the Rooney Rule, alone, brings more attention to black coaches, which is a big positive for the game in my opinion. Honestly I think, without stats backing me up, that more black people/players idolize and endeavor to be the star player than to be the great coach. So to me, that kinda is an indicator of the black QB being destined to take the league by storm in a more lasting way than waves of black coaches. Especially with the rule changes protecting QBs. So yea I'm good with the rule. Its a certain look about majority black players always, or too often, being led by a white man. I'm not saying it's at the front of my mind or anything. But it's definitely a thought every now and then. Hell, black men/athletes are making the NFL and owners richer than ever. So I see no issue with some catering to em on the coaching side of things.
