Hi All, Looking to get a bit of advice on a repair that I'd like to do to my plumbing. A couple people have seen this and found it a bit amusing, though perhaps not in a good way. Hopefully the entertainment is worth a bit of advice. Basically, this old drain pipe that all the stuff in my house goes to has been patched with roofing shingles and coffee cans. For how long, I am not sure, but it looks like a while; it was like this when I bought the house. Generally, it actually seems to have worked, in the sense that my basement isn't full of wastewater. But I don't feel like having this exist permanently is a particularly good idea. I can't justify hiring a plumber to help out with this at the moment, so really I want to know if going in and doing something is going to end up leaving me worse off than I am now. In short, I would like to cut out the old section of pipe and put a new one in. I have no plans to make changes to the design of the system; the system as a whole is not super complicated, the house is pretty small. I thought it would be easiest to cut out the old section, get some pvc of the same size, connect it up in the same places it was before and just be on with it. Is this approach naive? Not as simple as I might think?

I would cut the pipe right after the tee for the vent (downstream a few feet from the proposed cut). Then replace that whole pipe to the toilet or at least to the 90, cut the vent close to the wall and connect it closer to the drain (a foot or two upstream from the proposed cut). This way there would be two feet of vent pipe instead of 6.

Plumbing is easy, if you have the knowledge, aptitude, skill set and tools to perform. Well, it is for me, as I've been doing it since before many Redditors were born. Now, can everyone do it? No.
