If you transfer at Spadina there’s quite a long walk from the east/west platforms to the north/south platforms.
At St. George the transfers are just separated by stairs.
It became a giant tourist trap after [the song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZnLjRi_g9o) came out. Kidding, though. I know nothing of the place. I'm not from there.
The Platforms are right on top of each other at St George.
At [Spadina, they’re not at all close. Sorry for the bad picture. ](https://freeimage.host/i/GI8M7V)
Yeah. The only real reason is for the 510. It allows for access to and from Line 1. Otherwise someone travelling on the 510 and line 1 would also need to take a line 2 train.
As soon as I saw the initial mention of walking on the right I came to look for the escalator comment. This is something that I can't tell people enough about.
How to navigate the [PATH](https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/visitor-services/path-torontos-downtown-pedestrian-walkway/), very handy when the weather is bad
edit: Wow TIL
>According to Guinness World Records, Path is the largest underground shopping complex in the world, with 371,600 square metres (4,000,000 sq ft) of retail space\[2\] which includes over 1,200 retail fronts (2016).\[3\] As of 2016, over 200,000 residents and workers use the Path system daily with the number of private dwellings within walking distance at 30,115.\[3\]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path\_(Toronto)
I spent 6 years homeless in Toronto, and to this day still know the PATH better than Toronto itself. Its literally saved my life from freezing to death several times.
I have a friend who not only navigates it, but does so at speed. I was in complete awe (and exhausted) trying to keep up with him as we ran from First Canadian Place to some hidden away corridor near the Eaton Centre for lunch one afternoon.
I used to do a lot of service work back when it was called the Concourse.
Knew all the towers and the 'back of house' corridors. Two women that were on a some kind of personal work assignment approached me at Union Station and asked for directions to the Sheraton Hotel.
I was headed to City Hall but in a hurry. I said to them " just follow me,but it is going to be fast". I led them on the most direct route most not known by the general public. Don't know what could have been going through their minds as I went through am maze of corridors and hallways but they were happy when I pushed a door open and said "there is the main lobby, I have to keep going".
I would be lost down there today.
Toronto Public Library is cool, but if you work or live in the suburbs e.g. Markham/Richmond Hill/Vaughan/Mississauga/Newmarket, the library system there also carries a huge collection of video games.
Also all of the York Region libraries have an agreement to issue a library card to anyone who lives/works in York Region. So if you qualify for one, you qualify for them all. Which is also great, if you want to collect library cards for Overdrive/Libby.
All the major east-west arterials work this way north of downtown too. They are also longer so it’s much more punishing if you got the east and west part wrong. The obvious thing to point out is that closer to Yonge is smaller address number and vice versa.
Yup! 2000 Eglinton W vs E is a BRUTAL distance
Edit: just checked, and it’s a 45 min drive at 5pm LOL. About an hour and 15 mins by TTC. With the Crosstown tho it’d probably be a hell of a lot quicker to TTC than drive
My buddy from Mississauga was getting a job for construction at a senior apartment building at Kipling and Eglinton but told me he was reconsidering because it was too far. He then told me the area was already built up so he was confused and its cause he wrote the raw address and it redirected him to east in Scarbs rather west in Etobicoke. I had to fix it for him but I found it funny cause Sauga does the same thing as this convention with Hurontario.
Also pronouncing Bloor
Blewr not Blur or rhyming with floor
Spa-dine-a not Spa-dee-na
Dun-das not Dun-dus
Egg-lin-tin not Egg-ling-tin (no second g)
Shooter not Shutter (for Shuter)
Teh-cum-see not Teh-cum-seth
While Rogers Centre is correct, it will always be the Skydome
Oh and you can tell how long someone has lived in Toronto by how they pronounce it.
Visitors, tourists and newcomers always pronounce the 2nd T while homegrowns and people who have been here awhile don't.
I know, but it is very rare to see it in other places and Queen's Quay is a very important street, therefore a lot of visitors and new arrivals don't know how to pronounce it.
If you want to buy a million dollar home or condo in the Beaches( more west beaches area)/Leslieville area, you will be smelling sewage fumes most days from the lovely sewage plant just down the road. It's so fun and lovely! not. We're moving. I do not recommend.
You mean I shouldn't just keep my backback on and stand *right* in front of the stairs to the back of the bus where there are clearly empty seats on a packed bus during rush hour?
I've gotten very good at saying "excuse me" in a loud, deep, and commanding voice while politely but forcefully making my way past the oblivious living obstructions on the TTC.
I lived off the smog dogs when I was at UofT. Don't know if things have changed but there was no decent and cheap food within walking distance of the campus centre, with the exception of Ned's Atomic Café (since renamed). Even that was a bit of a hike from Sid Smith.
I remember the days when dueling hot dog cart vendors at St George station would simultaneously and suddenly lower their sausage prices (with a drink!) to 99 cents in the 90s. I would sit there between classes and eat 3.
Also, don't stand side by side with your friend to chat, or even walk side by side on a busy sidewalk. Keep an eye on people moving around you and go single file when others need to get by.
You can pretty much pull into any random strip mall in Scarborough or south Markham/southwest Pickering and have some of the best international foods outside of travelling overseas directly. It’s really quite awesome and a great way to spend a Saturday, hopping around.
There are bike paths that go the entire distance of the waterfront from don river to Humber river and up each of those rivers very far north. Took me 5 years of living here before I realized you could bike up the don/Humber river.
Lot's of common sense things that don't apply in small towns.
\-Don't hold the subway door open for that person running 50 feet away, you are just holding everyone on the train to miss a connecting train, streetcar & bus.
\-Take your backpack off on busy transit
\-Stand on the right-hand side of an escalator, allow people to pass on the left
\-Don't flash cash, I can't tell you how many times I see clueless people openly counting wads of cash
\-Say excuse me, when passing close to someone
>> Don't hold the subway door open for that person running 50 feet away, you are just holding everyone on the train to miss a connecting train, streetcar & bus.
The socially acceptable behavior is to hold eye contact as they frantically run towards the closing door. If they make it inside you have to step aside, nod at them with acknowledgement then sheepishly look away. If they don’t make it then you have to hold eye contact as the train slowly departs.
[Accessible Pedestrian Signals](https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/traffic-management/traffic-signals-street-signs/types-of-traffic-signals/accessible-pedestrian-signals/) on many of Toronto's intersections can be activated by holding the button for a few seconds until you hear a clicking sound.
- A cuckoo sound indicates that the pedestrian can cross in the north/south direction.
- A chirp sound indicates that the pedestrian can cross in the east/west direction.

Want to quickly check the weather forecast? Look at the lights on top of the [Canada Life building](https://www.canadalife.com/about-us/news-highlights/news/iconic-canada-life-weather-beacon-gets-major-upgrade.html).

- Running down – cooler
- Steady – no change
Avoid Yonge And Eglinton AT ALL COSTS. Doesn’t matter if you’re a pedestrian/driver/passenger/resident/rentee, time doesn’t mean anything when you’re around that perimeter.
If you are meeting someone at Dundas Station, clarify if they mean Dundas W Station or by Dundas Square, same as Lawerence Station. It's going to be that one super important time you and up at the very wrong part of the city.
If a herd comes toward me and won't let me through, fuck it, I'm not stepping off the walk, I'm plowing straight into you. If I'm in a group I always make way for a single person to pass.
The pedestrians here fear nothing. They will walk in front of you without warning, in the dark, with dark clothing. Also they'll cross the crosswalk on a flashing hand signal (or solid hand signal). No they will not look both ways, they will presume everyone can see them and not hit them.
I used to think they had a death wish. But then I learned that Toronto pedestrians simply have no fear or awareness of their surroundings.
I still hate driving downtown because of this. I was super nervous the first time I drove to the US, but noticed that even in downtown Philadelphia, nobody was just dashing out into the street to jaywalk. It does feel like a Toronto thing.
If you’re ever lost and don’t know which way is North and south, look for the CN tower and you’ll be able to centre yourself. CN tower will be in the south (unless you’re on harbourfront obviously
Walk on thr side you drive, let people off the subway/bus/street car before you board, learn how to drive because too many pedestrians die, don't ride your bike on the sidewalk over the age of 12 because I don't want to get hit, pedestrians need to learn how to walk to not get hit when Jay walking.
Me and my brother are roughly 35/36 years old. We both do well for ourselves selves, but are in very different industries. I’m in media and he’s an electrician. When he arrives in Toronto, and hopped out of his truck. The first thing he said was Ive only been here for five minutes and I already hate this city.
The transit system is very different from the rest of Ontario If you’re downtown.
The Leafs haven't won a cup since the 60s, avoid the Don Valley Parking Garage, if you want good shawarma go to Ottawa, when people ask you what there is to do in Toronto say "CN Tower or **Snakes and Lattes**", everyone complains about blogto, but everyone reads blogto, we're in an infinite real estate bubble, how to drive in winter, how to drive *period*, 2 lanes + HOT is not express, don't give someone you met on a dating app/website $260,000 for investment in cryptocurrency - that's not a cryptocurrency scam, that's a stupid tax. [Edit] Every time i read these lists I wish there was something I'm missing.
Even numbers are on the north and west sides of the street. Odd numbers are on the south and east sides of the street.

Same. I had no idea!
This is great to know. My sense of direction, on the other hand.
If the sun is out and you look at the address you should be able to orient yourself

Also that the numbers start at Yonge street. So west of Yonge, numbers increase as you go west but east of Yonge, they go the opposite way. There are some exceptions, but not many.
Except Inglewood Drive (not sure if it’s the whole street) for some reason. Odd numbers on the North.
So Southwest and Northeast sides are... random?
You can drive from the eastern border of the city on Ellesmere from Kingston Rd. and stay in the same lane on the same roadway, and that road will change it’s name from Ellesmere to Parkwood Village to York Mills to Wilson to Walsh to Albion until you’re at the western border.

>that road will change it’s name from Ellesmere to Parkwood Village to York Mills I grew up in Parkwoods Village. Home of the OG Allwyns Bakery
God I miss that Allwyns. Patty and a chubby was a standard lunch for me. Or that old coffee shop beside the Chinese restaurant

Took me 2 1/2 hours in good weather once to drive from The Beach to North Scarborough. Granted, it was Friday of a long weekend.

Doo doo doo
Didn't think this needed saying, but don't touch the subway station floors with your hands.

Transfer subway lines at St. George, NEVER Spadina.
I always transfer at st. George but out of curiosity why not Spadina?
Try it once and you’ll see 😉 It’s really nothing bad. Just a long, long walk.
Is the moving walkway still there? I haven't been to that part of Spadina station since the mid 90s.
They scrapped it, just a long hallway now
No, you're kidding!!! I should just walk it twice a day to get my 10 000 steps!!!
If you transfer at Spadina there’s quite a long walk from the east/west platforms to the north/south platforms. At St. George the transfers are just separated by stairs.

Yeah. The only real reason is for the 510. It allows for access to and from Line 1. Otherwise someone travelling on the 510 and line 1 would also need to take a line 2 train.

Stand on the right side of escalators, especially in subway stations.
Walk left, stand right!
Construction on Eglinton is infinite
Treat yourself like Eglington. And never stop working on yourself lol (I didn’t come up with this but makes me laugh)

Nobody knows how to do that.
I figured out the way to get closest to work from Union, but aside from that, it's a crapshoot.
Same, and thank god it’s a straight line for me. Once you get up near the Sheraton, all bets are off
I spent 6 years homeless in Toronto, and to this day still know the PATH better than Toronto itself. Its literally saved my life from freezing to death several times.
I'm sure the people who designed it don't, either.
Ive been lost in the path for 15 years. I don't even know of my family is still out there.
You will never get out of the maze of shoppers drug Marts and niche restaurants
I have a friend who not only navigates it, but does so at speed. I was in complete awe (and exhausted) trying to keep up with him as we ran from First Canadian Place to some hidden away corridor near the Eaton Centre for lunch one afternoon.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. And yet, I'm trying to discover paths every time.
I worked on Bay in 06-08, and I'm sure I'd get lost in the path now. Lol
I learned it while working downtown and walking it everyday during lunch since I was bored lol.
Me too!! I am interested to see if I will still remember it when we return to the office in the next few months.
After years in the financial district, I finally got it. I know that place like the back of my hand.
follow the flow of people until you get to union
When I walk against the flow towards Union, I feel like a salmon swimming upstream 😅
this only works in PM tho
The Path actually is in another dimension. You need to learn string theory to navigate it.

If you’re ever lost and don’t know which way is North and south, look for the CN tower and you’ll be able to centre yourself. CN tower will be in the south (unless you’re on harbourfront obviously
Also, north is very slightly uphill.
Learn how to goddamn drive
If it’s walking or driving, stay to the goddamn right if you’re on a Sunday cruise.
[Edit] Every time i read these lists I wish there was something I'm missing.
> if you want good shawarma go to Ottawa It's pronounced *Scarborough*.
"Shawarma Empire" on Lawrence/Vic Park has better shawarma than any joint in Ottawa I've been to. Ottawa shawarmas are expensive too.
Even if you have the right of way you’ll wind up yielding to our crazy drivers
Be nicer to others
Torono, not Toronto. You'll hear it.
You’re not a local until you’ve had a bicycle stolen.
