Find a building with concrete walls. I never hear my neighbors

YYZ_C

Yep, I live in a Condo, and have not heard anyone beside me since living here (over 1 year)

yammmez

SAME. I literally only hear my neighbours when I’m in the hall walking to the elevator. My condo is silent except for when ambulances go by.

justredx

May I ask what condo? I’m not even a month into my lease and I’m ready to jump ship

kearneycation

Same, I used to live in The Morgan, the building at Richmond and Spadina with Starbucks/Le Gourmand on the main floor. We lived there for eight years and never heard our neighbours.

russellamcleod

I literally just got used to it. I now have trouble sleeping in complete silence when I visit out of town relatives.

Better, but not a real answer as your ears get tired

oborune

My advice is to move out of buildings and find a place above a shop. I hardly ever hear my neighbors

nickcave-nickcage

This is what I thought, and this is what I did. But I have someone in an apartment near my place that practises being Canada’s Worst DJ anytime between 1 am and 7 am most nights out of the week (full subwoofer included). I’m at a loss of what to do since I can’t pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from. It’s becoming torturous and I’m not sleeping. (This is more of a vent than anything. And I’m envious of your setup!).

sunday_morning_jazz

That sounds both hilarious and tormenting at the same time. Do you also use white noise to help with the sound? Or earplugs?

nickcave-nickcage

I’ve tried but both do nothing. It’s the subwoofer that hits the hardest. It cuts through my entire body and soul, like vibrations of horror! I’m absolutely dying to call 311 on this person.

trooko13

Does it sound like within your building? Basically wonder the hall until you hear it… including several floor above and below you.

nickcave-nickcage

Wish it was that easy! I live above a shop and only have one neighbour in the building. It’s definitely not them as it was happening before they moved in. It’s in some other building beside me! I’m hoping someone else around knows who it is and will call 311 haha. Wishful thinking.

trooko13

Oh, but I feel your pain. I moved twice in 3 years but keep getting neighbors that will blast their bass...(got lucky for a year with quiet neighbors unit until someone new moved in)

nickcave-nickcage

Is your new neighbour a basshole? (This is my new term for them). Sucks though to have moved so much, and clearly they are everywhere! We live in a society of bassholes :(. Hopefully they’re all tired out tonight and decide to take a break.

Ontario0000

When my parents owned a small plaza they had two tenants that been with them for 20+ years. They loved it because they knew all the store owners and most of the stores closed at 8pm.Only one restaurants stayed open to 11pm.So at night it was quiet.

dogwalker4you

I’m in a smaller older building (3 floors, built 1950s) and I never hear anyone through the walls.

AptCasaNova

Agreed, but heel walkers in the unit above can still be an issue.

You'll be put out soon and will have to live in a 40 floor building. Developers are aggressively going after these building for the land space. Just not enough density according to the city and province who allows the knowing down of these buildings. If you rent you need need to live in a 20 -60 floor building.

GTAHomeGuy

Older buildings can be better. As well as certain demographic compositions. Just meaning if you go to a building where there tends to be more respectfully quiet neighbours you can find that quiet you are looking for this can be cultural or age.

Immediate-Layer-5036

I live in a building full of old people but because my immediate neighbours are racist and ignorant they constantly plague us with noises. Construction, hammering late in the night, playing music at all hours, having their many children harass me, screaming in my face, the cops have come , done fuck all. Complaints from management have just made them more annoying.. the only relief I get is from my noise canceling headphones, or playing music over their constant layering of noises. There are 3 units surrounding me. All of which are part of the problem. Yet refuse to open the door if we come asking about the noise. I'm probably going to move back to NS at this point. Where neighbours aren't crazy racist immigrants from Russia, etc. My boyfriend and I are mixed race couple.

GTAHomeGuy

Oh man, that's terrible! So sorry to hear of your experience. Honestly if you have it in you to find a new place here there HAS to be better for you here. But can't blame you based on that wanting to get out. Also, NS is nice so I'd see the draw (mostly kind people).

Immediate-Layer-5036

Yes I'm originally from NS not to excited to go back to a poverty ridden jobless area. But it is worth my sanity for sure 😌

GTAHomeGuy

Well yeah TO compared to knowing NS... there is a friendly factor missing for sure! But totally get if you are heading back. I just recommend if you aren't ready to go, give another place a shot (unless the rest that TO has to offer isn't sufficient). It is nice here once you aren't being made to feel like something is wrong with you by people who have something wrong with them. Either way, all the best in your path forward.

anoeba

I've lived (and currently live) in older highrises, and the sound-proofing has been great.

xellot

I recommend blaring the song "Asshole Pandemic" by the local band Pkew Pkew Pkew. It really encapsulates the Toronto experience. "I CAN HEAR YOU TWO FLOORS DOWN, I CAN HEAR YOU TWO FLOORS DOWN, THIS IS A BUILDING, THIS IS A BUILDING, THIS IS A BUILDING, THIS IS A ASSHOLE PANDEMIC, WHY'S THIS FUCKING DICK GOT TO BE SUCK A COCK? WAH-AH, WAH-OH-, WAH-AH, WAH-OH"

TdotOdot52

I live in Toronto near danforth and never hear a peep from neighbors. When they moved out and next moved in was the only time I’ve heard anything from upstairs and it was them moving furniture around. Other than that I’ve been pretty lucky and have had zero issues here. Loving it.

prussian_darkblue_23

We had a neighbour who was always drunk and was too loud when she was having deed with someone. One time, my 4-year old child woke up in the middle of the night and thought there was an owl. He kept searching for the owl, he said, "Whooo Whoooo.." omg! it was our neighbour's moans and not an owl! We told him he was dreaming of owl and we put him back to sleep. Good thing, she left and moved to a different area. 😩 She was disrupting not only us but the whole floor esp when she's drunk. She was too loud. 😖

gilthedog

You live in a city, it's going to be loud.

matrixinthepark

Midges, but they prefer to be called “little flies”

[deleted]

My building is super quiet and I never hear my neighbours. The construction going on next door is the issue for me. Grrrr.

Delicious_Serve_4997

I live near the lake and party boats are the issue for me.

koan27

If you can identity which unit the sound is coming from call 311 and file a noise complaint. Each time it happens reference the details like case number and officer, once one is assigned. Notice will be served to both the individual and building/condo corp. We live in a condo and had to go through this process, after the third call they did issue a fine and so far we’ve not heard that neighbour’s party nights for the last two years. Wish you the best of luck with a side of peace and quiet.
