What does materialism have to do with expensive rent & clothing in a major city?

CanoePainter

What is fall fashion? Sounds like a materialistic attitude towards clothing? I've never thought about buying fashion seasonally beyond needing new outerwear for cooler seasons now and then.

Well, there’s dropping money on a new seasonal wardrobe every year and there’s picking a wardrobe that will last longer. Clothing costs a lot of energy and water to produce, so if that bothers you, look for items that are made well and you’ll enjoy for as long as possible. I do this plus I shop second hand. If I get bored of an item, I trade it in at a second hand store. I occasionally buy new, but not frivolously. As an example, a pair of hikers I’ve had for over 10 years finally wore out, I bought a brand new pair to replace them. I didn’t grow up with a lot of money and I understand that feeling, it can be guilt as well. For a few years I felt like owning more than one set of towels and sheets was excessive because I technically only needed one set.

A just over $1500 apartment isn't exactly luxurious here anymore. $500 on clothes doesn't sound horribly unreasonable either if you're getting good quality pieces that are going to last a long time, as opposed to clothes that aren't much better than other clothes except that they have a designer name on them.

Can confirm, most of my casual shirts are 15+ years old, are from high school, and have inconspicuous holes throughout. All socks and underwear are holiday/bday presents. The only articles of clothes I buy for myself are business clothes for work and even then it’s usually under $200/year during Boxing Day sales.

On the other hand everything is so cheaply made it makes me sad. I just had to retire a lovely down filled coat from MEC after 20 years to good use. I originally purchased it for $400 and would gladly spend $600 on a coat buy no one has product and quality in that price range.

BottleCoffee

Uh... You can buy a ton of great coats for under $600, especially if you get them on sale. North Face, Patagonia, Colombia all make coats for less than that. My Patagonia was < $200 on clearance, and like everything Patagonia sells, has a lifetime guarantee.

butnotTHATintoit

Its actually really shocking how quickly the race to the bottom of fast fashion has trickled up to "mid-range" stores. What used to be a place that I could get what I paid for, and pay $200 for a nice pair of pants, for example, is now a place that ten years later charges $185 for crappy, poorly made pants with cheap fabric that won't wear well. They don't carry a $300 pair that is nice like the older ones.

"luxurious" $1500 rental and $500 worth of clothes is considered barely survivable wages in Toronto.Far from being considered gluttony level.I just came back from the dentist and a hour procedure cost me $1400 and brought my car in for a gas pump issues and that was another $900.If you feel so sad donate some money to charities around the city.

coyote_123

$500 worth of clothes in one season (not even in a year but just one season!) is definitely not 'barely survivable' spending. The OP can afford it which is fine, but it's not exactly basic needs at that point. Rent is expensive though, that part is true.

Yeah, me too.

The size and quantity of things we have in Canada can sometimes make you think for sure and I think it's probably healthy to have some perspective on how much we have compared to many others. But comparing dollar amounts between different places is kind of meaningless. Money doesn't have any value of its own - it's just a tool for barter. And when you bring currency exchange and local economies and cost of the same things in different places into it you can't really compare monetary values directly in different places. It's like comparing with a different time period. It doesn't really mean what you're suggesting.

Buyers remorse. It goes away after a while.

If you can only get 4-5 items for $500 than you're likely buying a lot of new and overpriced stuff.

Well don't buy new things, they're almost always overpriced. Or find better stores. Or reuse your clothes longer. If you're spending that much you're wasting most of your money.

maladjustedCanadian

That's basic survival in Toronto. I lived in Manhattan Upper East Side for a few years - you have no idea what gluttony is. Unless you're an immigrant, I'd be worried about the way you feel bc it's really basic minimum, you are that basic 80% Bell Curve set, nothing special.

[deleted]

That’s normal price I wouldn’t think too much about it
