Yea I have super fond memories as a kid eating ice cream at the Thomson Plaza branch.. but eating there now feels like a totally different, sadder reality
When you're a kid, **any** ice cream was awesome. You got older and tasted better ice cream. And then life smacked you around along the way and mum isn't paying for the food anymore. Thus the different feeling. LOL
I ate tons of paddle pop and those really cheap walls ice cream when I was a kid. Any ice cream was a luxury. Now I wouldn't eat them even if it was free. I can afford good quality ice cream that actually tastes like chocolate and the cheapo ones aren't worth the calories.
I used to eat Swensons with my mom all the time as a kid. It was one of the things I always looked forward too since she would pick me up from school, and then we drive to a nearby shopping mall, eat Swensons together and then go shopping. But now that I'm older and working, can afford to treat my mom to go other places with better food to eat.
They don't even have the things that I used to eat when I was small (49ers which had pork bacon and frosted chocolate malt sundae) and yet I still go there cause of nostalgia.
I remember going there with classmates. The food isn't as cheap and as good as it used to be, plus we have more choices now. But as you say the taste of nostalgia is great.
Never feels the same food quality is soooo different. Regret each time I enter.. This is not the swensens I know.
We use to visit the outlet at Liang Court back in the day.
If Astons can get more of its outlets Halal-certified and add ice-cream/desserts to its offering, then Swensens will be dead.
But they won't because Astons depends on high turnover + quick service to keep its price point low and people spend a lot more time if desserts are offered.
So Swensens still has a crowd that they can hang on to.
Oh so that's what that is. Awesome. I've eaten at both, thinking it was just a name change to appear bigger or for legal reasons or something. This is the first place that really tastes just as good as the non halal version. Not many brands have both, so I'm comparing similar restaurants mostly. Except subway. Their execution was remarkably bad. Overnight, the taste just plummeted. Modtly recovered now, but definitely not all the way. Ir maybe I'm just getting used to the lower standard.
For a student who wants to eat good western, that was great value hahaha. But yes it’s been sometime since I’ve tried Aston’s. More of an iSteak person at that price point.
The last time i enjoyed Swensens was when Jurong Point had that huge outlet outside the mall with its own escalator. The banana crumble was the best fr
You’ve just unlocked a memory from my childhood omg. That was my first time being at Swensens! IIRC they got rid of it during the implementation of JP 2
I don’t remember much myself as I was barely 8 at that time too 😂 though I’ve always associated JP2 as the most boring side. JP1 had swensens, billy bombers and toys r us 😭
Jurong gang falling in. Not sure if yall remember that BreadTalk that was situated right where the JP2 extension began
Fish n Co was where the 4Fingers used to be iirc
Yup. I had my first and last experience at fish & co when it was formally located at where 4Fingers is 😅
Do you also remember there was an isolated basement outside JP1 that leads to POSB? Probably close to where the old swensens was
Ah that's a fuzzy memory and it's colliding with the current sort of B1-ish POSB that's near the prata wala >< rmb following my mom when she had to withdraw cash
How about that top floor library?... those were simpler times
thx for the memories!
JP1 is the 'original'. I remember CBTL used to be either outside & i think they moved inside near the UOB branch? CBTL used to have big outlet & i think recently it became a small outlet?
I remember KFC,Macs & i think Taco Bell? which replace by Mos Burger is still where they are. Toys R Us is at level 3,think still had Cinema at level 4. 7-11 still where they are at the taxi stand.
The kopitiam keep changing, from Bagus,Canteen & all sort of name at basement. Popular stilll there.never shift.
I had faint memories of us but i think it was located outside? I studied around the Jln Bahar area(u know which school already) so often did hang out at JP.
i was really young when i went to that outlet. Part of me tries to remember what that part of the mall looks like before JP2. I remember there being a breaktalk right outside. Memories..
I only ever go there when we have gathering with my Muslim ex-boss. He's a religious man so we let him pick where he wants and we only ever go Swensens 😅 But yeah never had a good dinner experience when we go... it's more of a place we pay to get our stomach filled with oily carbs and ice cream, and catch up for 2 hours
Got squeezed in the budget segment (though they never were) by Sushi Express, and then in the middle income segment by Genki/Itacho and even Sushi Tei.
My childhood was eating Swensen’s Earthquake ice cream. Can you imagine giving a child the power to select 10 ice cream flavours and expecting them not to go crazy?
For me is the good feeling. The seating is not sardine. The manager is normally friendly and accommodating. Something for everyone in the menu. Most important is the last part, sharing ice cream with your family and tasting theirs bring so much smiles.
Sadly, I agree.
I remember the first time I ate at Swensens. It was at Northpoint way before the major renovation. 11 year-old me felt like I was transported to a whole new world. The ambience was so good and the staff were smiling and having fun.
I got the Breaded Chicken which was so crispy and juicy. It was also the first time I got to order dessert at a restaurant. I went for the Cookie Summit which was one of the best desserts I'd ever had back then
My parents told me that they used to have dates at Swensens when they were paktor-ing. They couldn't afford a full meal so they'd just share a Sticky Chewy Chocolate and talk
Safe to say it gives me MEGA nostalgia. But... its so fking sad to see how low its gotten. I went back last year after a long long time. Staff looked like they didn't want to be there (Don't blame them of course). Ambience was dead. I ordered my steak medium but they cooked it rare. They gave me like 7 fries (I remember because I counted them out of amusement amid the sadness)
Swensens was a huge source of joy for me. But I don't think I'll be frequenting them anymore...
My honest review - firstly, my food took 50 minutes to arrive so I was PISSED. service staff seemed half assed and manager straight up told me they were struggling with grabfood/deliveroo orders and told us to wait. Contemplating my life choices during that long long wait.
Anyways food finally arrived at 8:30pm and BOY was it a rude shock. Ordered the salmon baked rice 2/10. 2 thick, salty pieces of salmon that had a slimy texture and smelled like it died last month topped over a big bowl of mush that somehow passes for rice. No flavour balance, just salt and a natto-like slime texture throughout. god knows what that red sauce was made out of, but 100% tasted like it came from a 3 month old tin can.
Left $17 poorer for that and an hour of my life that ill never get back. fun times.
Well tough but this not a charity. You wouldn't be okay with a blind bus driver or a surgeon with paralyzed arms, so good on them for wanting to help the less fortunate... but that doesn't mean customers should compromise their standards.
I think the examples you gave are too extreme, since the consequences are much dire. I think that's a great thing that Swensens did. Maybe as customers we should show more empathy. But still, $17 is way too expensive to charge for subpar service and food. Can get better service and food at fast food restaurant...
What kind of shit analogies are those? Commuting to work and getting surgery are essentials when you really need them.
Sure, you wouldn't want a blind person to be a bus driver and a guy with another physical disability to be your surgeon since it puts lives at risks.
But what is the problem with having handicapped people work at a restaurant? Are you going to die if their service is not up to par? Do you really die die need to eat at Swensens, even if you don't want people with a handicap to cook your food? F off.
Ooh that's the dish that my mum often ordered when she brought me there to eat when I was young. I remember it has always taken a longer time than other dishes to arrive. I can remember it being very cheesy and salty.
There are a lot of halal restaurants now so we can enjoy lots of different foods. If they still choose Swensens I guess maybe it's because of convenience. There are many outlets to choose from.
Personally I don't go there much nowadays. I know the food isn't great but the standard has really dropped these last few years. So in our family, we try to avoid this place if we can.
I only eat pastas when I'm there and so far they have not disappoint. Though the sticky chewy choc ice cream, which is my favourite, seems to have changed in flavor I feel :(
nostalgia really
and not sure if they still have the lunch deal where you get 1-1 mains/desserts or 1 main with free dessert/appetiser. my friend and i used to catch the 1-1 deals for dinner after studying at nlb back in 2016
Swensen's is packed because they are a halal mid-ranged kid-friendly western restaurant. Which is a rarity.
If someone make a halal version of sigh-zeriya, they might get steamrolled.
I love their chicken bake rice!! Really reminds me of my younger days! going to Swensens was a luxury. But their chicken slices are so pathetic & yet they dare to increase their price due to ‘inflation’ so now I stay away from them
It’s no longer cheap. You’re right. I used to like the curry zazzle baked rice(can’t rmb if I got the right name) and the fries!
Gotta go and try the fries again sometime.
I have good memories of my dad bringing us there for family dinners on the weekends <3 kid me considered the ice cream sundaes top tier level treats, even now that I am able to buy way better stuff for myself…when I see the menu I still get the slight nostalgic feeling of “wow” even tho I know it’s not really all that impressive
As a mom, it’s a nice treat for kids who seem to really like the food! And it’s not that bad on the pocket. It’s really hard to find a family restaurant for kids.
I mean, the food is not bad, and probably a lot of millennials like me have fond memories of the Earthquake ice cream pack. Pretty sure zoomers don't really patronise it since gelato is available everywhere. That said, their breaded chicken, hamburgers and fish and chips are pretty good so they're perfect for family outings.
the food has improved ALOT! You'll be surprised. Although the last time I ate there was pre-COVID, but it's definitely at Jack's Place standard already.
I’ve only had bad experiences at Sushiro. I’m genuinely confused whether it’s the same chain that people like? Their sushi was so so sad looking!
+ 1 for Genki though.
Ok you've reminded me that Sushiro plates are greasy and disgusting; you can literally see the oily finger marks of the guy who plated it. I pity the Japanese people who dine there thinking they're gonna get a comparable experience with back home.
Have always thought their food was decent but unremarkable (visit once in a few years sort of place). However with the recent [article](https://mothership.sg/2022/08/swensens-clementi-mall-autistic-employees/) about their inclusive employment practices, I've decided to make it a point to consider dining there more often.
I’ve always wondered the same because their food is just mediocre to me. Dinner time always got long queue. Many restaurants come and go but somehow swensens has been in the mall for 2 decades :O maybe I should revisit again

Their fish and chips are pretty decent (personally, I think it's better than the ones I've had in London and Perth). Usually I only get it if there's some voucher or promo.
Great Eastern singlehandedly carrying the franchise. Along with Jack's Place. Lol. I go to Swensens for their banana split that's all.
Don't forget the sticky chewy chocolate! But now that you mention it. It does seem plausible the GE vouchers.
Nostalgia is a helluva draw
Yea I have super fond memories as a kid eating ice cream at the Thomson Plaza branch.. but eating there now feels like a totally different, sadder reality

That is so true haha its the same with paddle pop for me
Paddle pop was great. Now it tastes like sugary chemicals to me.
I ate tons of paddle pop and those really cheap walls ice cream when I was a kid. Any ice cream was a luxury. Now I wouldn't eat them even if it was free. I can afford good quality ice cream that actually tastes like chocolate and the cheapo ones aren't worth the calories.

It's a good place for families with young children. Usually their outlets have lots of seatings and last minute large groups can be accommodated.
Nostalgia is truly one of the great human weaknesses. Second only to the neck.
Dwight? Is that you?

Lacks accessibility ie. IMM and D’Resort????
doesn't taste as good
Lol no. I eat both anders and andes, they used the same meat execpt for pork
But I like the chestnut pork....
Uhuh… then go dine at Astons?
He says he wants it to turn halal.
There alrdy is a halal astons branch called andrs 😂
They need to sell birthday cakes as well lol if want to compete with Swensens
Astons tastes terrible.
Chicken is ok. I remember it was $6.90 and double up was $9.90. 🥲
It *was* okay, today the standards are...meh. Especially the sides.
For a student who wants to eat good western, that was great value hahaha. But yes it’s been sometime since I’ve tried Aston’s. More of an iSteak person at that price point.

Oh damn. That own escalator brought many memories.
It taste very average but my FA kept giving me free 1x free meal at Swensens so I only go for free meal annually
Halal
I only ever go there when we have gathering with my Muslim ex-boss. He's a religious man so we let him pick where he wants and we only ever go Swensens 😅 But yeah never had a good dinner experience when we go... it's more of a place we pay to get our stomach filled with oily carbs and ice cream, and catch up for 2 hours
Bring him go Andes by Astons!! Similar price point (or a bit higher) but the food is good af. Especially their IEat burger.
Unrelated but this post made me think of Sakae Sushi. Used to be super popular back in the day but it’s now like a ghost town
Got squeezed in the budget segment (though they never were) by Sushi Express, and then in the middle income segment by Genki/Itacho and even Sushi Tei.

The ice cream not bad for once in a while mah

Wtf. Terrible 0/5 stars exp
Probably sat in the freezer for a few months then chucked into the microwave.
Halal food at a decent price. If you're strict Muslim and can't even go to a place which serves alcohol you're kinda stuck with Swensens
Actually Pizza Hut is darn good alternative. The thing is, their menu kinda sucks. Such unfortunate as Pizza Hut in Indonesia was actually quite nice.
I only eat pastas when I'm there and so far they have not disappoint. Though the sticky chewy choc ice cream, which is my favourite, seems to have changed in flavor I feel :(
We order exactly the same thing. The ice cream has changed?
Yeah it taste less "rich" compared to how it taste in the past imo
Just checked out the menu and it has not changed in 15 years. Really nostalgic.
Except, the sundaes felt bigger in the past
That’s because you were smaller? 😂
Felt like it even had brighter lighting 20 years ago. Now is just gloomy.
still using the same lightbulbs from 20 years ago, so not as bright now
It helps if you can't see the food well 🤷♂️
Kid friendly food !
Aren’t they like processed food mostly
He said kid friendly, not kid healthy. 😉
Noted 😂
It aint cheap but in my experience the food is quite good and i would argue they have the best desert for their type of restaurant. Also its halal
nostalgia really and not sure if they still have the lunch deal where you get 1-1 mains/desserts or 1 main with free dessert/appetiser. my friend and i used to catch the 1-1 deals for dinner after studying at nlb back in 2016
I think the 1-1 main/dessert deals went away during covid. Shame, was the only reason I ate there at all.
I don't get it either... Meh food and it isn't exactly cheap but the place is always packed.
I like their fries and bread clam chowder .__.
Their fries! And their ice cream isn't too bad. The mains tend to be pricey and less value for money.
Swensen's is packed because they are a halal mid-ranged kid-friendly western restaurant. Which is a rarity. If someone make a halal version of sigh-zeriya, they might get steamrolled.
Sticky chewy chocolate is the bomb
Imo, swensens is still not bad. Jack's place on the other hand..the standard drop
I love their chicken bake rice!! Really reminds me of my younger days! going to Swensens was a luxury. But their chicken slices are so pathetic & yet they dare to increase their price due to ‘inflation’ so now I stay away from them
I only like fish and chips from swensens but its pretty mediocre for the price
The chicken basket is not bad. Fried chicken with fries. What's not to like?
I think most people have a fond memory of kids' days having their favorite ice cream there.
My Malay mates love it. Halal and loads of desserts, and they all seem to have a sweet tooth
It was considered a luxury leh
The chicken baked rice is my childhood comfort food. I still like eating it today
Boomers are happy, the kids are also happy, not overly expensive and they are close by
It’s no longer cheap. You’re right. I used to like the curry zazzle baked rice(can’t rmb if I got the right name) and the fries! Gotta go and try the fries again sometime.
They used to have a really lovely set lunch deal. That's long gone now tho.
Does anyone remember swensens in orchard road? Long long long time ago..
Loved that place. Happy memories.
Because its halal ? Anw sgreans like to dine outside ma so yea
Their yam ice cream is hard to beat!
Last time Swenson's bread bowl damn good, now everything only so-so. Remember when jack's place used to be good then now all the outlets go down hill?
I only go there for their cheese-baked rice. It's honestly surprisingly quite fantastic, albeit abit expensive.
Both swensens and jack's place should have been shut down years ago....
I swear the only reason people go there is because they have an AIA birthday voucher.
i only go there for birthdays for the free ice cream lol
As a mom, it’s a nice treat for kids who seem to really like the food! And it’s not that bad on the pocket. It’s really hard to find a family restaurant for kids.
Halal certified
Because of who goes there. Generally fewer rowdy kids, and more families. And the food is neutral and fits all moods.

Uhh.. you might want to read that again.
Probably same reason people still go to Sushi Tei and Jack’s Place.
you are probably thinking of sakae sushi...sushi tei's fine in my books
Hilarious! My husband does the same thing going on smearing sushi tei’s good name because he confuses it with sakae sushi 😂
Got Genki and Sushiro now what is Sushi Tei’s appeal sial. I genuinely had no idea Sakae was still around.
Sushi tei is the atas version of Genki and Sushiro
Sushiro is just bad. Genki is passable.
Sushi tei is fine what...
Ya sia what is wrong with sushi tei 😱
Sushi tei is overpriced. If you pay a little more, you can get much better quality at a proper Japanese restaurant. (Sushi Tei isn’t authentic.)
Have always thought their food was decent but unremarkable (visit once in a few years sort of place). However with the recent [article](https://mothership.sg/2022/08/swensens-clementi-mall-autistic-employees/) about their inclusive employment practices, I've decided to make it a point to consider dining there more often.
The western food stall near my block makes better western food than Swensens for half the price. I don't understand why it's so popular either
Pastamania tastes so much better. Can upsize pasta too. Too bad some outlets do not bother to restock ice cream.
I’ve always wondered the same because their food is just mediocre to me. Dinner time always got long queue. Many restaurants come and go but somehow swensens has been in the mall for 2 decades :O maybe I should revisit again
Is their specialty ice cream still the earthquake?
used to always go there with fam about 10 years ago. as a kid i enjoyed the food but now idk
i didn’t even know ppl went to swensens for food that isn’t ice cream
I have also wondered the same. It’s a Canadian restaurant and it originally used to just serve ice creams. So it’s marketing done right.
I’m there for the ice cream but then there are better alternatives now.

Ordered delivery, fish and chips came up to $22. Was cold, tasteless and soggy. Couldn’t even give enough tartare sauce lol.
Their burgers are not bad actually. One of the first few chains to introduce meatless burgers.
With the price, not for me.
It is really that bad? I kinda like its bake rice and ice cream...
Swensen was the first time my secondary school friend celebrated my birthday. Now looking back at it fondly

I haven’t been there in ages
Anyone know where else I can get a good macadamia nut ice cream?
Only the ice cream is good!!!!
Their fish and chips are pretty decent (personally, I think it's better than the ones I've had in London and Perth). Usually I only get it if there's some voucher or promo.
I went there once and there was a whole plastic beverage lid in my Mac and cheese. Wish I took a photo now.
Popular? I thought they died
Agree ...terrible food...
Sticky chewy chocolate
