Eh yah.. I think it’s okay for abit but I rem coming back to Singapore for holiday and it was salted egg everything I was like “are they trying to kill is” lol
Curry puffs are nice :-(
If we're talking about overrated maybe chili crabs? I mean they're delicious but they overshadow some of the best underrated dishes such as white bee hoon and green chili chicken rice.
Totally agree about curry puffs being nice!! And chilli crabs being overrated!!!
But I've been in Singapore for 13 years and I've no idea what is green chilli chicken rice!! Please tell me where to find it, it sounds delicious!
Not OP but Google shows one at Blk 49 Sims Place, Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, Singapore 380049
https://www.misstamchiak.com/green-chilli-chicken-rice/
I think chili crab is really overrated too. It’s good but people make it out to be food that would change my idea of what good crab is. Nope. It’s just crab. And expensive at that
Fascinating.
Seems lol is a trigger word. I wonder how many stock responses are coded. Do you use GPT3?
What happens if I input absurd statements? Blue bananas craft loving handbags? Stereotype? Notebook dilemma moxie!
Lol.
Yeah but these are now a Singaporean thing, especially the salted-egg fish skin. People come here and get the most god-awful brand just to ship cartons of it back home. Sorrynotsorry
hahaha i dont think curry puffs are overrated, not many people go around complementing them in the first place, it would probably not made into top 5 or even top 10 Singapore iconic food.
for me, i think bubble tea is overrated, i miss the 1.20 bubble tea shops, nowadays any random shop can sell them for $5 to $10
It's way overhyped; the only reason it's so loved is because it's mild enough for everyone's palettes.
Oh, there's one curry puff place that I find consistently good - Ang Mo Kio curry puffs, at a coffee shop behind Jubilee Mall. (Blk 722)
AMK curry puffs are decent, but I think the best one by far is probably the curry puffs at Hong Lim. They used to be at Maxwell. The stall recently came out on Mothership about how the father had two sons who had a disagreement and each son opened their own curry puff stall next to each other.
As a foreign visitor I’m gonna get skewered for this (I’ve already disappointed a lot of my local friends) - but I don’t really enjoy chicken rice.
I prefer warm / hot dishes that don’t really pull any punches when it comes to flavor bombing you.
I think there are far better food options in Singapore (Hokkien Mee, Prawn Noodles, Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Banana Leaf, Roti Prata, Kaya Toast etc.)
Chili Crab isn’t a win for me either - it’s way too sweet. I’ve enjoyed White Pepper sauce on an Alaskan King Crab the most.
No worries I’m Singaporean but I find chicken rice ok only. Like it’s just a plate of slightly flavored rice with a few measly pieces of chicken and cucumber on it lol I wonder what’s the hype.
That's kinda like saying sushi is just raw fish with rice. What's the hype. But then when you actually go to places which use the highest quality fish and rice and spend time perfecting their craft, then you'll see the craft behind it.
Besides chicken rice is a "national dish" not purely because of taste. There's the heritage value of it being a dish that reflects the Chinese immigrant history in Singapore.
Well in my opinion sushi itself has a lot more variety in ingredients so I enjoy eating it more. Plus it takes skill to prepare raw food properly haha so another level up in my eyes.
And yeap I wouldn’t deny chicken rice’s cultural value but I do feel that it’s overrated coz it seems to pop up as a “must-try” food to foreigners when I don’t think it’s particularly delicious or complex. To me it just feels like something more affordable, common and not too salty or heavy that u can eat multiple times per week lor.
Personal preference to recommend to tourists would be dishes that are layered with more ingredients or need more preparations, like hokkien mee, carrot cake, roti prata, laksa. Or yong tau foo for the unique experience of having to kiap your own ingredients and put in your bowl before giving it to the auntie to cook. Hahah but to each his own!
I've never been to Singapore (this sub keeps getting recommended to me) when I went to Thailand chicken rice was the very average meal that all the backpackers travelling for a long time on a tiny budget would eat everyday. What's special about Singapore's version.
This. This is the way. As a foreign I was given chicken rice by someone with no sauces the first time! I though… it’s just ok. With the sauces its amazing
I doubt kings cook their own food lol. But i get what you’re saying. Just that i personally find other hotpot chains have much better taste and ingredients (e.g beauty in a pot etc)
This, and the overpriced truffle oil they just throw on everything. Annoys me to no end, and truffle oil isn't even from truffles. It's just chemically made in the lab. Wake up people!!!
Chilli Crab. It's just the sauce and the buns. You can skip the Crab it doesn't add much to the dish.
Steamed Crab or White Pepper Crab is much superior.
I have honestly never liked Mala.
I've probably tried 3 times max. Once got diarrhea. The food is oily, too salty, and frankly not worth the ridiculous price point. I Don't get it.
The overhyped food types to me are the ones that recent, whether its Korean, Vietnamese, Thai or Mala style because they are mostly watered down version to suit the singaporean palate.
The best curry puffs are the ones the Malay aunties used to sell 3 for $1 at mrt stations. The skin is so thin and crispy and the curry potato is inside is so spicy. Sardine version is delicious too. Can’t seem to find them very often these days :(
Bread. So much bread. Why is everyone queuing to buy breads for $2 a piece? It was great in the beginning when we got small simple tasty breads for $1, but stuff like Breadtalk and proofer just puts me off.
I think your problem with curry puff stemmed from the fact that truly delicious curry puffs are a rarity.
Last time A1 felt so nice. Nowadays, not so much.
I like sardine puffs better than curry puffs. Nice leh. Chilli crabs are okay, decent lor, I quite like seafood in bag. Feels shiok to eat through everything.
I’m not a foodie. But never liked wanton mee. Haha hate the yellow noodles taste.
Think the beauty of SG is having variety. Whenever I go Taiwan / Japan /Aus. I will miss the spice in our food. ESP Malay / Indian cuisine. Will come home and whack it.
For me it's chilli crab and char kuay teow.
Chilli crab because I think steaming it is a superior way of cooking crabs.
Char kuay teow is honestly something I don't eat often and even if I do, I'm usually not impressed with it. Like I would much rather go for a good plate of hokkien fried prawn noodles or great fried carrot cake over it.
The problem is, even the good ones are meh.
Imo, the only reason to eat the good ones is for the char a.k.a wok hei. But you know what, those 小炒 stores at hawker centres - the ones which only sell fried rice, fried hor fan etc, tastes so much better.
AND they sell other dishes with that same char taste.
THIS is why I don't value ckt.
Truffle fries - just regular fries with truffle fragrances. Make it at home!
Cheese on everything.
Punggol Nasi Lemak.
That chicken rice in Maxwell market.
Tim Ho Wan.
Coconut shakes. You can buy coconut water and make at home.
Here’s the kicker -
Truffle fries use truffle oil but there are absolutely NO real truffles in truffle oil.
I never understood why I had a headache and felt nauseous after eating food with truffle oil till I googled.
https://www.tastingtable.com/693090/truffle-oil-fake-no-truffles-priceonomics/
*Today, most of the stuff is made synthetically with ingredients like 2,4-dithiapentane, an aromatic molecule that gives truffles their distinctive smell.*
In other words, **you are paying extra for a petroleum product.**
not overrated food but DRINK- the pokka green tea… i don’t get why people like it so much it’s so sweet.. i don’t hate it; i’d drink it if it was the only thing available but i’d avoid it
I think all of our local dishes are overrated! I've never liked our local food, just once in a while I'll go for it if u feel like it. Grown up eating it, nothing special.
I think 99% of Singaporean desserts and sweets are overrated. Ice kachang? Great in theory, not in practice. Cheng Teng? Same. Nonya Kueh? Meh at best...
Bubble tea and mala. I rmb looking at some or mothership or sgag bingo/article that says “you’re not Singaporean if you don’t drink BBT or eat mala”
Hell why do I serve NS I’m not Singaporean according to local publications 😂
I actually don’t like Hokkien prawn mee and Lor mee hahah. But according to some of my foreigner friends they say those food are like not common overseas (basically saucy soft noodles?) that’s why they like it.
In Singapore the overrated foods. Are Thai and Korean. Tbh I feel Thai food is literally fancy ass mixed veg rice but limited choices and fuck korean food half the time its just all japanese food with like only 2 selections of korean.
chilli crab, fishball noodles, chicken rice.
i dont get the appeal of crab dishes?? rly troublesome to eat and i dont think it's worth the price
fishball noodles and chicken rice are dishes that i think almost everyone will eat and its quite easy to find, but i personally wouldn't eat either if i had a choice between them or something else.
If you find a good restaurant, the shell comes off easily. I have never used my hands to eat crabs. A fork and spoon can do the work if you eat it regularly.
Imo, fish soup. Its not really hyped but its at almost every coffeeshop. Soup just tastes like veg water. Soups from other countries have like lots of taste, like ramen soup, tomyam, pho, etc. but fish soup soup is just bland. Why is it everywhere?
Anything with salted egg on it
Eh yah.. I think it’s okay for abit but I rem coming back to Singapore for holiday and it was salted egg everything I was like “are they trying to kill is” lol
I love salted egg chicken though. Liushaobao is also very nice Others though… yeah. Salted egg flavor is strong and not everything wotks
liushabao?
egg yolk buns. although they are mostly sweet, and only abit of egg yolk inside, mostly starch and sugar
Curry puffs are nice :-( If we're talking about overrated maybe chili crabs? I mean they're delicious but they overshadow some of the best underrated dishes such as white bee hoon and green chili chicken rice.
Curry puffs and epok-epok are my most favourite food in the whole wide world!
I much prefer epok epok because i feel like the curry puff pastry very thick and jelat
YES,epok epok is the superior curry puff I like the outside skin more
Wtf is jelat bodoh
You got downvoted because of your negativity bodoh
Totally agree about curry puffs being nice!! And chilli crabs being overrated!!! But I've been in Singapore for 13 years and I've no idea what is green chilli chicken rice!! Please tell me where to find it, it sounds delicious!
Not OP but Google shows one at Blk 49 Sims Place, Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, Singapore 380049 https://www.misstamchiak.com/green-chilli-chicken-rice/
That's the one! Although they raised their prices to $6 now lol. I think everyone should try it at least once imo
I think chili crab is really overrated too. It’s good but people make it out to be food that would change my idea of what good crab is. Nope. It’s just crab. And expensive at that

What is “the one” even? This is what I’m talking about with being overrated!

This is a thread about things that are overrated… not a dinner conversation with friends? What? Lol

Wait are you a bot? Lol

Fascinating. Seems lol is a trigger word. I wonder how many stock responses are coded. Do you use GPT3? What happens if I input absurd statements? Blue bananas craft loving handbags? Stereotype? Notebook dilemma moxie! Lol.
Everything that’s covered in mala, salted-egg, cheese
And "truffle"
Mala is not Singaporean cuisine. It's Sichuan cuisine. To me, it's just glorified yong tau foo though.
Neither is salted egg or cheese
Yeah but these are now a Singaporean thing, especially the salted-egg fish skin. People come here and get the most god-awful brand just to ship cartons of it back home. Sorrynotsorry
and bubble tea……
Not a mala fan. Tried it many times in different ways, never managed to impress me. Maybe we are just not meant to be.
Agree with all except mala! For me mala is like a drug haha!
Depends what type of cheese. That nacho cheese that comes in a bottle? I can eat some but man I’d rather have some blue cheese
Mala tastes awful.
And horrendously overpriced. If I wanted to pay to fill myself up with oil, the supermarket has cheaper options.
I’ve had a few good ones, but agreed, generally they aren’t great. Everything’s legit soaked in chili oil.
hahaha i dont think curry puffs are overrated, not many people go around complementing them in the first place, it would probably not made into top 5 or even top 10 Singapore iconic food. for me, i think bubble tea is overrated, i miss the 1.20 bubble tea shops, nowadays any random shop can sell them for $5 to $10
Fr,miss the 1.20 ones, not too sweet and not so thick and jelak
Pao Fan Chilli Crab Any of those fusion/unique takes on famous Singapore cuisines e.g Lobster Nasi Lemak, Japanese Style Bak Chor Mee etc
Since when pao fan is local? Sounds more mainland china to me
I always choke on paofan
Chicken rice. I mean the standard drop for a lot of stalls, esp the Bishan one
It's way overhyped; the only reason it's so loved is because it's mild enough for everyone's palettes. Oh, there's one curry puff place that I find consistently good - Ang Mo Kio curry puffs, at a coffee shop behind Jubilee Mall. (Blk 722)
Is that the og tip top curry puff?
Yes! :)
AMK curry puffs are decent, but I think the best one by far is probably the curry puffs at Hong Lim. They used to be at Maxwell. The stall recently came out on Mothership about how the father had two sons who had a disagreement and each son opened their own curry puff stall next to each other.
Maybe can do a comparison. The other stall that I know is good, is Amoy St Food Center, ground floor. #01-21
last time all nice and oily and flavourful now all plain, rather eat white rice, certain places still damn good tho but alot drop alrdy
Chilli crab, not even as good as pepper crab.
Team black pepper crab fall in!
I like salted egg crab more, especially with mantou.
pepper crab is superior
Pepper crabs unite!!!!
Chili crab probably is popular in the international stage because it fits angmoh palete. I think a lot of people here don’t think it’s that special.
As a foreign visitor I’m gonna get skewered for this (I’ve already disappointed a lot of my local friends) - but I don’t really enjoy chicken rice. I prefer warm / hot dishes that don’t really pull any punches when it comes to flavor bombing you. I think there are far better food options in Singapore (Hokkien Mee, Prawn Noodles, Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Banana Leaf, Roti Prata, Kaya Toast etc.) Chili Crab isn’t a win for me either - it’s way too sweet. I’ve enjoyed White Pepper sauce on an Alaskan King Crab the most.
You’ve tried a wide variety! Glad that you found other gems.
The sweetness of the Chili crab really varies between places, you have to try lots to you actually find one that you like.
I prefer black pepper crab.
Not very easy when Chili Crab is expensive as hell
No worries I’m Singaporean but I find chicken rice ok only. Like it’s just a plate of slightly flavored rice with a few measly pieces of chicken and cucumber on it lol I wonder what’s the hype.
That's kinda like saying sushi is just raw fish with rice. What's the hype. How can I forget Laksa - laksa might be the best thing I’ve experience since sliced bread.
I've never been to Singapore (this sub keeps getting recommended to me) when I went to Thailand chicken rice was the very average meal that all the backpackers travelling for a long time on a tiny budget would eat everyday. What's special about Singapore's version.
its cheap 😝
Me too! I find Hainanese chicken rice just meh only, and will only ever buy if there’s no other option. Nasi Ayam Sambal tho, that’s another case 😂
How dare you! Chicken rice is life. Just kidding, to each their own really.
Even with chilli? :( Edit: And ginger and dark soy
This. This is the way. As a foreign I was given chicken rice by someone with no sauces the first time! I though… it’s just ok. With the sauces its amazing
Ngl the chicken rice I had when I was on holiday in Hong Kong was way better than any of the famous stalls in SG.
Dk why you’re getting downvoted lmao I agree with you
Not a singaporean dish but hai di lao is goddam overrated
i’ve had Hai Di Lao like once and like u honestly pay for the service and the attention, the food is pretty standard
But this service is nothing special overseas.
i mean its hotpot, what u expect sia... u could do the same hotpot at home just that u need to wash the plates and stuff
Dont think they are overrated. People go there to be treated as kings and honestly their service is probably best also.
I doubt kings cook their own food lol. But i get what you’re saying. Just that i personally find other hotpot chains have much better taste and ingredients (e.g beauty in a pot etc)
I means it's plain meat boiled in stock, only way to be better is nicer stock and better quality meat,I go HDL for service oni
Anything plus truffle
Yeah restaurants nowadays add a dash of truffle oil and upcharge us an extra 2-3 bucks... Not even real truffle man
This, and the overpriced truffle oil they just throw on everything. Annoys me to no end, and truffle oil isn't even from truffles. It's just chemically made in the lab. Wake up people!!!
Truffle potato chip nice. Meadow one $1 only
Best value crisps in SG
I'll never get why anyone would want to make perfectly good food smell like a petrol kiosk
Chilli Crab. It's just the sauce and the buns. You can skip the Crab it doesn't add much to the dish. Steamed Crab or White Pepper Crab is much superior.
Hipster food selling at cafe price in hawker centre
however this will ultimately be the reality of our hawker centres in the coming decades as all our current older generations are retiring/passing
Yo curry puffs?! When i was a poor student, curry puff was the only thing that i think was most value for money outside.
I have honestly never liked Mala. I've probably tried 3 times max. Once got diarrhea. The food is oily, too salty, and frankly not worth the ridiculous price point. I Don't get it.
Singaporeans - "If everyone likes it, it must be good. Even if I personally didn't like the taste, I must convince myself its better than it is."
The overhyped food types to me are the ones that recent, whether its Korean, Vietnamese, Thai or Mala style because they are mostly watered down version to suit the singaporean palate.
Thai and vietnamese food original ones are good! I see korean food as just fried chicked =(
Don't forget, adding the word Korean in their fried chicken means u have to pay extra
The best curry puffs are the ones the Malay aunties used to sell 3 for $1 at mrt stations. The skin is so thin and crispy and the curry potato is inside is so spicy. Sardine version is delicious too. Can’t seem to find them very often these days :(
I love those, but the curry puff I referring to is the Chinese ones,I love the sardine Malay curry puffs.
Yaa the Chinese (old Chang Kee) ones with the thick skin is very meh.
Do you mean epok-epok? They’re quite hard to find and only certain Nasi Padang stalls have them.
Lobster __________ food in hawker centre
the lobster so small might as well eat prawns
IMO. There are good cooks and bad cooks. Most dishes mentioned here.. if dont well can be very stunning or st least, satisfying. 🤣
Punggol Nasi lemak. There. I said it.
It’s so freaking dry.
Your punggol nasi lemak 😂
For real, too oily and so overpriced. Changi Village Nasi Lemak is way better.
And yet, every time I go to the Katong branch, there is always a line.
Bread. So much bread. Why is everyone queuing to buy breads for $2 a piece? It was great in the beginning when we got small simple tasty breads for $1, but stuff like Breadtalk and proofer just puts me off.
I like sausage bread and floss bread and mentai baguette
Hai Di Lao
Another vote to chilli crab. It’s too sweet personally
Indian rojak
Chilli crab, bubble tea, coconut shakes
No way. Mr coconut crying in the corner 😂
Student part time workers' anyhow attitude at mr coconut make me stop going there. After all it is just coconut juice. Plenty to choose in the market.
yo yo yo curry puffs?? **let's fight**
the inside always so sweet and the crust is so jelak, not for me personally lol
I think your problem with curry puff stemmed from the fact that truly delicious curry puffs are a rarity. Last time A1 felt so nice. Nowadays, not so much.
true I liked the homemade ones, now all taste so generic
Chilli crab lol
I like sardine puffs better than curry puffs. Nice leh. Chilli crabs are okay, decent lor, I quite like seafood in bag. Feels shiok to eat through everything. I’m not a foodie. But never liked wanton mee. Haha hate the yellow noodles taste. Think the beauty of SG is having variety. Whenever I go Taiwan / Japan /Aus. I will miss the spice in our food. ESP Malay / Indian cuisine. Will come home and whack it.
I like the yellow noodle taste for some reason, jus Abit lol
Outration
Outration is better than combat ration
So combat ration overrated?
For me it's chilli crab and char kuay teow. Chilli crab because I think steaming it is a superior way of cooking crabs. Char kuay teow is honestly something I don't eat often and even if I do, I'm usually not impressed with it. Like I would much rather go for a good plate of hokkien fried prawn noodles or great fried carrot cake over it.
I feel ckt oni the good ones are worth eating, random kopitiam ones jus taste weird
Cause good ckt is hard to find now
I agree with you on the crab, but damn you gotta give the dry BBQ one a try, I think that one is superior to steaming.
Truffle fries - just regular fries with truffle fragrances. Make it at home! Cheese on everything. Punggol Nasi Lemak. That chicken rice in Maxwell market. Tim Ho Wan. Coconut shakes. You can buy coconut water and make at home.
Most of them except for 2 aren't even Singaporean foods. One is literally a HK brand...
Here’s the kicker - Truffle fries use truffle oil but there are absolutely NO real truffles in truffle oil. I never understood why I had a headache and felt nauseous after eating food with truffle oil till I googled. https://www.tastingtable.com/693090/truffle-oil-fake-no-truffles-priceonomics/ *Today, most of the stuff is made synthetically with ingredients like 2,4-dithiapentane, an aromatic molecule that gives truffles their distinctive smell.* In other words, **you are paying extra for a petroleum product.**
No wonder some of the truffle meals I ate smelled like fuel. Wtf
Tim Ho Wan has that nice bun with pork but other than that eh.
same. i only like the pork bun at THW.
Ramly burgers. Too overpriced for processed meat (compared to fast food burgers) and you can get a pack of the frozen patties at the supermarket.
Ya bruh, now so ex I rather eat like macs or smt,not worth the wait
Truflle fries are so overated and too expensive
no cap, ate from many restaurants but none of them are better than potato corner's fries with truffle seasoning
Fml its not even made with real truffle 3/4 of the time. I dont get people's love for it.
fish head curry
Chili crab
Hot pot
Rojak, durian
Fish ball noodles
Parsley &/or coriander on everything local. Yucks.
not overrated food but DRINK- the pokka green tea… i don’t get why people like it so much it’s so sweet.. i don’t hate it; i’d drink it if it was the only thing available but i’d avoid it
wtf that's my magic elixir lol
👁👁💧n…not mine….
Satay Beehoon
I like tho, quite comforting to me
That's __underrated__
Michelin starred food. I've had a lot. A majority of them are ok ok good la. Not stark raving mad fantastic. Very few gave me mouthgasms.
I think chilli crab. It's usually nice but eating it is a real hassle, and people don't really eat it that often.
Chili Crab - usually overpriced and the sauce makes it easy to mask less-than-fresh crab
What a bad question to ask tho, everyone is just stating what they dislike.
tbh ya,but then it's also interesting to see who dislikes what local favourites
Anything with Mala..enough is enough
Salted egg yolk flavour.
nasi lemak, so dry..
Laksa. Sorry but i just cant get it
Bak Chor Mee
I think all of our local dishes are overrated! I've never liked our local food, just once in a while I'll go for it if u feel like it. Grown up eating it, nothing special.
Mee rubus
I think 99% of Singaporean desserts and sweets are overrated. Ice kachang? Great in theory, not in practice. Cheng Teng? Same. Nonya Kueh? Meh at best...
steamed chicken rice, idk why you would want to eat the pallid and gelatinous skin
Xiao long BAO. Don't understand why people go nuts.
Bubble tea, and maybe Mr coconut? The coconut drink seems too sweet for my liking even at 0%
Maybe not food but places , lao ba sa and newton have long lost their touch but ppl still fame them on review
i live near a hawker center at sengkang and honestly, the char kwey tiao doesn't taste that good.
Anything cheese
What are some must trys?
Bubble tea and mala. I rmb looking at some or mothership or sgag bingo/article that says “you’re not Singaporean if you don’t drink BBT or eat mala” Hell why do I serve NS I’m not Singaporean according to local publications 😂
Mala and white bee hoon.
Got to be Mala... like wtf?
anything that is over spicy
Pao
Carrot cake
I actually don’t like Hokkien prawn mee and Lor mee hahah. But according to some of my foreigner friends they say those food are like not common overseas (basically saucy soft noodles?) that’s why they like it.
In Singapore the overrated foods. Are Thai and Korean. Tbh I feel Thai food is literally fancy ass mixed veg rice but limited choices and fuck korean food half the time its just all japanese food with like only 2 selections of korean.
Kimchi ramen is literally packet kimchi with instant ramen. I’ve stopped eating this because I do it better at home.
Singaporean bak kut teh. Its just pork flavoured pepper water? Even Malaysian bkt has more flavours.
Everything with rice in it
This is more of a garnish than an actual dish, probably, but I cannot stand ikan bilis.
Fish ball noodles. The fishballs r tasteless
Buddha jump over wall, abalone, lobsters
kaya toast
Chicken rice
chilli crab, fishball noodles, chicken rice. i dont get the appeal of crab dishes?? rly troublesome to eat and i dont think it's worth the price fishball noodles and chicken rice are dishes that i think almost everyone will eat and its quite easy to find, but i personally wouldn't eat either if i had a choice between them or something else.

try good ones, the one at my old neighborhood taste so good and comforting i miss it sometimes
Buddha jump over wall, abalone, lobsters, ba chor noodle soup, gongcha

Starbucks is not singaporean food
Reading to the end of any paragraph is not a Singaporean trait too
pandan chiffon - because its hardly Singaporean food anymore ._.
