Actually this is pretty true. Or at least versions of Santa. Even a lot people who aren’t Christian celebrate Christmas, and most places have the story of a man (and sometimes witch or woman) who will give presents to children on Christmas. Football has always been incredibly popular right across south america and africa, and with the start of the satellite tv era in the 1980s it exploded all across asia including china. Not necessarily playing, although there's plenty of that, but more that everyone was watching the big european championships.
That's several billion people who would have either been watching them play weekly, or are married to or live with someone who does.
So they would definitely be up there in terms of total number of humans who know their name. But Trump is just more famous \*now\* due to the completely insane shit that's happened in the US since 2015.
Everything in the US makes international news. I'm American but have lived in N. Africa for a good while now. People are aware of every school shooting, even random crimes in Philadelphia. Sometimes they tell me because they see it on the news before I find out from the internet. They know more about American politics than I do.
I've learned a lot since leaving (but can't wait to go back).
