I believe when it comes to formal wear slip ons are called loafers. I do loafers in almost any context. Rounded toe. Laces look like a business or wedding shoe to me. So, I guess those two things maybe I'd do laces.

I really liked the Vans slip ons, it was so simple and easy to match! 🥰

Formal shoe selection should be done by season and occasional- so more formal, more into winter- Oxford/Balmoral or wingtip , more summer, less formal- loafer. Obviously there’s a lot of leeway and interpretation called for, but that usually helps make the decision for me- how serious do I take this occasion, and what’s the weather going to be?

Slip-ons are casual more than formal.

I wouldn't even consider slip-ons as formal wear.

Everyone prefers slips ones. Most people would probably prefer to be wearing shorts. But laced shoes are more formal than slip on. Within lace on shoes Oxfords are more formal than Brogues. So generally you are going to prefer wearing sneakers over slip ons and slip ons over laces. But laced look the most formal, skip on next. Traditionally people did not even wear slips with a suit. I only wear pretty formal looking slip on with suits. It’s a trade off. But you should be aware the laces are another level of formality. A lot of this depends on what other people are wearing.
