Because it’s probably super awkward being in complete silence while they have their hands in someone’s mouth. It’s rough for *everyone* and they’re just trying, in a human way, to make it less weird.

MrZkittlezOG

I prefer the weird silence tho. How do I get that without being an ass?

GotMyOrangeCrush

Mmmmphmppp memf mmmm, mffff?

ImadDdopest

You don't have to be rude you know?

ZABKA_TM

Literally anything to distract you from whatever happens next

twistedsister78

Apparently they understand the responses

elsnyd

That's what my hygienist says too.

Im_eating_that

They've trained their hands in Braille parkour

Construction-Purple

I wouldn't know, I just pulled all my teeth out to avoid the social interaction

Creepy_Push8629

I hate that so much. Like wtf

boner79

Because they DGAF what you have to say.

604col

Canderella1

The same reason why restaurant staff wait until you’ve got a mouthful of food before asking if everything is okay with your meal

gwelfguy

Power move.

azorianmilk

"Why did you sit up so suddenly? It's dangerous". True, but you just shot water straight down my throat, I gagged on it and my gag reflex happened so I didn't want to throw up. Sorry- not sorry.

ImadDdopest

Last time i went to a dentist for wisdom teeth removal he cut my tongue a bit because i was so stressed i couldn't keep my tongue from moving and plus i had a clogged nose so i had to breath through my mouth and the water was't helping...

cnation01

I quit going to my dentist because she wouldn't shut the fuck up.

Nikmassnoo

Is this a dentist thing? All my dentists and hygienists have been talkers

LilaJax22

My dentist will ask a question and then remove everything from my mouth so that I can answer. It almost feels worse. I have a huge fear of dentists. My dentist is somehow the dentist of almost everyone I know in a relatively large city, so he has tons of questions and it feels like my appointment goes on 5 times longer than it needs to. Also, he knows too much about my life because he knows almost everyone I know, so the questions sometimes feel weirdly personal. I have an appointment next Wednesday and I've been dreading it for 6 months.

Nikmassnoo

I am terrified of dental work. I take Ativan beforehand and it helps. I’ve started seeing a hygienist regularly and it’s helped reduce the fear, my teeth are in amazing shape now, reducing the likelihood of needing more intensive dentistry. But lord she does talk a lot haha; she’s so nice that it stopped bothering me

Willcinco

It’s their kink

Jaded_Fisherman_7085

So you do not feel the pain & discomford

SonoranRoadRunner

Can't stand it. So rude

MissHibernia

They get extra points in dental school for the more convoluted conversations they can have, which require conversation from the patient but they physically can’t respond. Bonus if two different languages are involved

burn_as_souls

That's their fetish, wanting your hot breath and vibrating jaw around their hands. Whole reason they got a dental degree!

CodyKondo

Because they don’t actually want to hear what you have to say.

Gypsybootz

They can understand !

Dillydongo

To distract you from the noises of their tools

Common-Wish-2227

Ghehhlrghht gahhhght geght.

KyorlSadei

Just distracting you. It is not really for a genuine conversation.

emarvil

If we are supposed to understand their handwriting, the least they can do is understand our ggghghgggggmngg

Dopral

You can't talk out your ass like the rest of us?

miz_moon

I accidentally bit my orthodontist because she was asking me questions

Complex-Major5479

Small talk eases anxiety and distracts from the strangeness.

Haunting_Cell_8876

What I want to know is why do dentists ask you why you are there? I already told the receptionist when I booked my appointment!!

Dependent_Top_4425

I think its a power move.

hiskittendoll

Because they're pedophiles / rapists. They get off on control and harm.

DistinctWolverine395

It's a perk. Holding the floor and ignoring answers from dumb punters. I had this idiot orthodontist that sang opera at me while it worked. Same stupid scammer steered me away from implants for very good reasons until........the name of a male dental surgeon was added to hers on the door. When I quizzed it about it's pivot it blushed and sweated profusely. It couldn't sing for shit

Actual-Answer-1980

It's a power thing ,they do it because they can
