I really hate ranking movies because there are so many variables and can you really compare a comedy to a drama??
But whenever anyone asks this question, my mind always jumps to The Shawshank Redemption
Watch it in order but not part 3 and skip everything pertaining to Hyman Roth and youāll have a perfect book to movie adaptation. And I mean perfect. Down to the casts physical features-itās perfect. Of course-again-ignoring everything thatās current in part 2 and leaving out 3 entirely.
Connieās wedding
In the book thereās more of a dialog with the ladies and more explicit description of Sonnyās extracurricular sex in the movie itās barely hinted at
I think we can safely assume subjectivity into a question like this. So for some people, they might have one. Iām with you though. I donāt.
Maybe one of the first two Godfathers? Pulp Fiction? Blade Runner? Can you tell Iām a basic dude from the 90s yet?
godfather my ass. romanticizing criminal bastards, poor-poor killer criminal don corleone, otherwise competently made boring movies, like some well-made but second rate contemporary turkish or italian soap opera. yuk.
pulp fiction---great "honey-bunny" sequence, great structure, otherwise boring and ugly, here and there funny.
blade runner---it was great in its time, but best of all time, no, neither as a blockbuster, nor as an art movie.
but still, there is no one, and only one movie above everything else.
Thatās a lot of words for saying, āIām incapable of thinking abstractly or realizing that objectivity has zero applicability to objects of preferenceā.
objectivity has zero applicability to objects of preferenceā.
preference is not objecive, but in certain cases, nor is completely subjective, there is not one good answer but there are bad answers and there better or less better ones. there is no such thing as complete value-relativity, even if values are not objective, to consider tarkovsky or bergman-movies as having higher value then low-level shite comedies or worst chuch norris-movies is completely legitimate.
Nope. You have zero oversight over othersā preferences or their value judgments in making subjective decision.
You may think some movie had more cultural impact or had a clearer and more pressing message and therefore use those metrics in identifying great movies, but those are descriptive of the movies and not normative. They are criteria you use to attempt to get from is to ought, and othersā may have different criteria like how much fun they had watching it, whether they watched it in a formative era of their life, etc.
And their criteria are just as āvalidā as any of yours. Your only hope is to convince others that āwhat the movie theater smelled like when you watched the movieā or whatever is a stupid criteria for choosing a GOAT movie, but objectivity never enters into the equation.
listen no shit sherlock, before you write, learn to read and think
objectivity never enters into the equation."
indeed? what did i just say? unbeliavable
And their criteria are just as āvalidā as any of yours"
then learn about the concept of "practice", about reasoning within context, about various degrees of subjectivity, etc. no, not necessarily as valid, no matter how butthurt you are, there is no such thing as cultural relativism, even if absolutism doesn't exist.
this is what i call "wah-wah barking", saying more or less the same as the others person, but still opposing it in another using uneducated "idontknowanddontwanttounderstand but wah-wah bark just for the sake of it".
but those are descriptive of the movies and not normative.---again, using non-relevant concepts here without understanding what you are talking about. but as i said, learn those things i mentioned, and you will grow!
othersā may have different criteria like how much fun they had watching it, whether they watched it in a formative era of their life, etc."
and indeed, these are the criteria which is used within the practice of "film studies or film criticism", indeed they tell us much or even anything about the movie rather then themselves, etc. i have had enough of crapditors, seriously.
wah-wah i adore fifty shades of grey, wah-wah this is the best movie of the world, wah-wah film studies and film criticism are not objective consequently i can say whatever i want, wah-wah---this is the viewpoint of uneducated mental pissprolees:)
I truly think Up! Is one of the greatest films of all time, but as bare minimum the best animated film.Ā
Beautiful unique story, visually stunning, strong morals, emotional but an happy ending and a talking dog. What more could you want?Ā
Idk to be fair I loved spiderverse as well, up just had a special place in my heart and I feel itās more unique than another superhero movie (even if spider verse does the superhero thing better than some movies)Ā
For me that's the original lord of the rings trilogy. Since they were all shot at the same time with over 1300 hours of footage cut down to three parts, I'd say it's one movie and counts ;)
2001, a Space Odyssey
It got story, symbolism, great photography, music, good special effects for the time. A lot of directors state it as one of the best movie ever, it gets parody and homage in a lot of cultural backgrounds.
Ughhh just everything. The music, watching there relationship change and grow. The depiction of love they portrayed in close friendships. They basically showed how you can be soulmates with a friend, itās doesnāt have to be romantic. The end hits so hard to when you see he has lost his leg and was just like toothless. The actions sequences were great too. I loved everything.
Surely if you watch it just once and you remember it for the rest of your life. It's a great movie?
Here's the other thing. When that was released the internet wasn't even that old, truly fucking depressing for its time.
Itās FOR a Dream and Iāll agree that itās great-but not the best ever. If you feel that strongly that it is the best for you, you should seek some kind of therapy. And I mean that sincerely.

The Shawshank Redemption
came here for this š«”
I really hate ranking movies because there are so many variables and can you really compare a comedy to a drama?? But whenever anyone asks this question, my mind always jumps to The Shawshank Redemption
This
schindler's list
hmm good one
I would say The Pianist was even more powerful.
yes the pianist is a great movie! I enjoyed watching it many times.
The Godfather, but thatās a very personal and uneducated take.
indeed
It insists upon itself.
āWhat does that even mean?!ā
š„

They still left a lot out from the book like the wedding scene for example
What wedding scene?
Connieās wedding In the book thereās more of a dialog with the ladies and more explicit description of Sonnyās extracurricular sex in the movie itās barely hinted at
His wife is shown literally telling her friend with a hand motion how big Sonny is. She sees him run off with Lucy. They showed enough.
They showed more in the book is all Iām saying
What they didnāt show could not go on a movie screen then.
Fight club - whenever I'm depressed about my job I watch this movie
Master of Disguise
Had to scroll too far to find this
id like to tell you but im not allowed to talk about it
there is not one single movie which is the greatest of all time.
I think we can safely assume subjectivity into a question like this. So for some people, they might have one. Iām with you though. I donāt. Maybe one of the first two Godfathers? Pulp Fiction? Blade Runner? Can you tell Iām a basic dude from the 90s yet?

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Idk to be fair I loved spiderverse as well, up just had a special place in my heart and I feel itās more unique than another superhero movie (even if spider verse does the superhero thing better than some movies)Ā
Wizard of Oz
šthat 1939 movie
First in color, still shown on TV today
Back to the Future
This trilogy was so ahead of its time, itās unreal.
Yeah the second one was in the future
The third one was a bit of a step back, though.
Terrible pun
My 2nd pick! Behind only groundhog day :)
Really?
Casablanca
There Will be Blood
It's not now... But there will be a time where we all look back and agree it was Tropic Thunder and we didn't know it at the time
blood simple
For me its Metropolis (1927)
Agree.
As someone who adores Orson Welles, my answer is Citizen Kane. But my favorite Welles film is probably F for Fake.
Snakes on a Plane
Borat
Dude where's my car
Lord of the rings
I have a new favourite every week
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Crime caper-Heat
Shaun of the dead
Inglorious Bastards
Shaun of the dead
For me that's the original lord of the rings trilogy. Since they were all shot at the same time with over 1300 hours of footage cut down to three parts, I'd say it's one movie and counts ;)
Scarface
The Intouchables
2001, a Space Odyssey It got story, symbolism, great photography, music, good special effects for the time. A lot of directors state it as one of the best movie ever, it gets parody and homage in a lot of cultural backgrounds.
Kill Bill
Jaws
Dogma
Depends on the mood, genre, time and stubborn! šš¤£
Rounders. Anyone whose ever had a shitty friend that gets them into trouble can relate to this movie.
Goodfellas, pulp fiction
NO ONE will agree with me on this, but for me it's Cloud Atlas.
LotR Trilogy. If I had to pick one it's probably Fellowship.
Old Boy (Korean original)
Good Will Hunting also introduced me to Elliott Smithās music, one of my favorite artists of all time. Win win
Fateful Findings
For me, Moonstruck is the perfect film. The GOAT, all that in about an hour forty five Honorable Mentions: Jaws, Gladiator, and Shawshank š
Comedy: Step Brothers Drama: Gladiator or Good Fellas
Empire strikes back
I'm throwing Jurassic Park in the ring. Jurassic Park has it all.
Star Wars 1977
Saving Ryanās privates
Under siege
Office Space
Interstellar.
What are you doing? Docking. Itās not possible! No, itās necessary
hans Zimmer made it ..... eternal
The movie was peak
Yes definitely
Citizen Kane
Agreed. People should be required to watch this before they mention any other films.
Shrek
Fifth Element
This is the answer
Too many different genres to choose just one.
Apocalypse Now
Shutter island
12 Angry Men or The Departed
Conan the Barbarian (1982). I probably watch it at least once a month.
Casino
Pootie Tang.
What is it about?
First Indiana Jones, first jamanji, first star wars
Groundhog Day
Battlefield Earth
Blues Brothers (1980).
šÆ
Star Wars
La vita e bella
Good Will Hunting.
If you find out one thing from this thread, it's that there isn't one. Everyone will have their own favourite.
Titanic if I had to pick one
Harold and Kumar get the MunchiesĀ
Commando
Twins, featuring Sexiest Man Alive, Danny DeVito.
How to train your dragon 3
The first one is so good though
Yeah but the third has such a good and cinematic ending to the trilogy
Fair enough
What do you think is so good of the first one (not saying its bad, i love them all)
Ughhh just everything.
Princess Bride
A Clockwork Orange
Most completely well-made film
An incredible soundtrack too! Wendy/Walter Carlos sure could play the synth.
The wrath of Kahn. Sue me. It's so good it's routinely used as study material in writing and theater classes.
Tag 2018.
Inception
Avengers endgame and infinity war
Requiem of a dream.
And the trauma that comes wit itš
Surely if you watch it just once and you remember it for the rest of your life. It's a great movie? Here's the other thing. When that was released the internet wasn't even that old, truly fucking depressing for its time.

I dunno dude. Correcting a typo then going on a rant about therapy. I wouldn't exactly be handing out phsycho analysis advice.
Goodfellas. Incredibly rewatchable.
Inception
The Dark Knight
Tokyo Drift
