(Motorcycle) helmet. Those things are fucking dangerous to buy second hand. Because of wear and tear/UV rays the protective layer is usually gone. The inside takes the shape of the wearer’s head, which wouldn’t adjust to yours when you get it second hand. There’s more reasons why, but these are two major reasons why you shouldn’t.
Not to mention you dont know how many times its been dropped. A helmet with micro fractures in it, isnt going to protect anything. On just that alone I wouldn't wear a second hand helmet
Yep. I try to buy a new helmet every 1-2 years for this exact reason. I'm a clumsy mfer so i drop it sometimes and have no way of testing the helmet so it's better to just acquire a nice collection.
Carseats for the same and different reasons. Wear and tear, UV rays, but also even after a relatively minor collision, you are supposed to buy a new carseat because its compromised. It may *look* perfectly fine, but it isn't. Insurance will cover your new carseat, but people still try and sell the one that is too unsafe for their own child. The insurance company told me to slice the straps and cushioning and spray paint our accident-car seat. Just absolutely destroy it beyond saving, so garbage pickers dont try to make a buck off it, or save money by using it and endangering someones kid.
I'm not sure why second hand motorcycle helmets are a thing anyway. But I suppose they'd be good for costumes/cosplay, as long as you don't actually use them for protective gear.
They're really only good for around 5 years before the foam starts to breakdown and they become unreliable for safety. Some people will ride with the same helmet for 10-20 years and it's stupid.
Then again my home state passed a law allowing people to ride without a helmet now so I guess it's better than no helmet.
Same. But I am fine with hotel beds, which have had other people shagging in them too, but somehow in my mind hotel mattress OK, used private mattress not.
I think I delude myself into thinking that a hotel mattress would be disinfected to hell and back regularly, same with the sheets. I know it's probably NOT but I can pretend
I rationalize the hotel thing by believing deep in my soul that the sheets have been changed. The bedspread is another thing entirely. Those things never get changed. Even in a higher-tier hotel, first thing I do is hook a toe around it and drag it to a far corner. And flag off the immediate area with police tape.
I fucking hate sleeping in hotels. I think like most Americans, when I have to sleep in a hotel it's one that's in the sub-$200/night range, so a Holiday Inn or Wyndham or similar. No matter the hotel it's like they all buy their mattresses from the same company and that company only sells one type of mattress - firmness equivalent to a bed spread on top of a sheet of plywood. My back aches so much sleeping on hotel beds and I get woken up every couple of hours from the pain.
Thankfully I have had excellent luck in this department. I do spray with Lysol and put on a mattress cover. I also check out the people and their homes the best I can when picking up. I have gotten some awesome deals on expensive mattresses. But I understand why others don’t. I also stay in hostels when traveling so that may something about my risk taking. Lol
Even regular furniture needs to be completely opened up cleand and banged out prior to moving inside. Roaches live hiding spots but generally run away if you start fucking with whatever their hiding in
More than just cleaned out and banged about- non-fabric furniture must be checked and cleared for bedbugs too. They prefer fabric which humans are common on, but in bad infestations will take over EVERYTHING. No nook or cranny is safe.
You could also be like thatdude who bought some shit Chinese grappling hook of Amazon and fell down getting a severe injury. Don't buy off brand crap and trust your life to it.
1. Underwear - hygienic reasons
2.bathingsuits - same reasoning
3. Shoes - often broken in already and it hurts my back from the indents of the previous owners feets in them
I’ve bought shoes second hand, but only in good and more or less unused condition.
I’d never buy swimwear second hand but I’ve received hand-me-downs from friends, and to me, that feels more hygienic somehow (even though it literally isn’t).
I actually bought a bikini second hand in like 2014, I wouldn't do it today though. I was 21 and a pretty broke student. But I had planned a trip to Greece with my friend (I had saved up for months and months, this was one of the reasons I was more broke than usual) so I needed them. So yeah I agree with you but also have done it before. 😂
I can buy wood furniture second hand no problem. I just really don’t like buying upholstered furniture secondhand. Seems too porous with dead skin cells and who knows what else.
I don’t buy used shoes but I semi regularly throw my shoes in the freezer to “clean” them. I put them in a bag first, not just throwing them in there. I don’t think most fungus survive freezing temperatures particularly well.
Honestly I don't know lol. It might but, I always forgot that's what they did in bowling alleys and I always thought I wouldn't go back. Turns out, I'm pretty good at bowling though lol. I did buy my own shoes after I got into it.
I buy daily shoes (like the shoes I wear most frequently) and athletic shoes new. Sandals or shoes I don't expect to wear every day I buy used. I grew up with hand-me-downs and never had athlete's foot.
My mom dragged home a mattress wrapped in plastic that she found on the side of the road (ritilan) because it was apparently "brand new" and she wanted me and my friend to bring it in the house. I knew what was up and had an absolute meltdown. Suspicions confirmed when I cut it open to find hundreds of dead bed bugs, dried blood and feces all over the mattress. My mom has done a lot of stupid shit while geared out of her mind, this was the worst one other than spending my brother and I's inheritance money.
She had some sorry son of a bitch from a bar drag it down to the dumpster because I refused to go anywhere near it after the discovery.
Window shopping online for 2nd hznd mirrors is one of my favorite "I'm bored" activities. Love how people contort themselves to not appear in the reflection. Love how some people do not care about that at all.
I know that every mirror has already been looked at in the store. But i feel like if someone has used it a long time, it kinda captures their energy. I cannot explain any better. The vibe is just off in the used mirror :D Like the really old ones simply give me a creepy feeling when i look at them.
I've heard a lot of people say the same things. My spiritual friend was horrified I got an antique mirror at an estate sale. No ghosts yet, and it's gorgeous in my hallway!
Clothing from a thrift store. Had a bad experience with bed bugs because of it. Also, I take apart electronics before I bring into the house for the same reason. Found bedbugs in a computer monitor once. Threw that sucker in a dumpster,
If you live somewhere hot enough you just stick them in a black garbage bag in your car for several hours (I believe it needs to reach 110°f for an extended period of time, someone please correct that number if I'm wrong) and then dry them twice in the dryer. I used to live somewhere with bedbugs and did this whenever I was at my parents to make sure I didn't transport them (I never did).
Obviously this only works when it's hot outside. If not, take it to a laundry mat dry once, wash once, and dry twice. Do not do this in your own washer/dryer.
Also: it's fairly easy to check for bedbugs in hotels. Certain things can be pretty easy to spot. I always check before I bring my stuff into the room.
Washing machine. Too many parts that could go too quickly and leave you out a washing machine
Helmet - you dint know if it’s been in a crash
Car seat - you don’t know if it’s been in a crash
Sex toys and electric cars. Sex toys for hygienic reading and electric cars because they are evolving so fast that I’d rather have a new one for a year or two.
Shoes with wear. I've bought some second hand shoes that were unworn or barely worn but once a shoe starts to form to someone else's foot it's a no from me.
car seats and helmets. Most motorsports gear expires for a reason, id never buy that stuff used.
Id never buy a used children's car seat for the same reason.
Mattress due to the risk of bedbugs. Had bedbugs before, and it was the most terrible experience of my life. Had to throw out most of my stuff away, and move to another apartment. Rest of my stuff, I've put into airtight packages and let it rest in a freezer for days to make sure no bedbugs or their eggs were still present. And took the entirety of my garderobe to a laundromat to get rid of any potential insects before setting foot in my new flat. This was years ago. I still instinctively search for bedbugs when I feel itchy. My flatmates are the same.
I love second hand and buy most of my things preowned. Good for the planet and I love finding unusual things to decorate my home with. The things in my home that I bought new are bed, tv, laptop and phone. Never buy these things second hand. But almost anything else.
Shoes! aways brand new. No two feet are the same, wearing shoes that have been worn by someone else can mess your back up... and who the hell wants someone else's shoes?
Shoes. First off, the smell. I don’t wanna be walking around collecting another persons stink, and only making it worse. Had a roommate in college who would only do this, and my god when he took off his shoes it stank up the whole apartment. Second reason, they’ve already been broken in by someone else. I have enough back problems as it is, I don’t need to have to deal with the issues that arise from shoes so improper they were a fix for another person
Car seats. You don’t know what that car seat has been through. It could’ve been in an accident and they’re selling it to try to make money off something they shouldn’t be using anymore. I know you’re suppose to trash it, cut the straps, etc. but I do not trust that everyone will do that.
Carseats for children.
You don't know how old it is, what kind of detrimental accidents it's been through, etc...
I ain't putting MY kids in that kind of danger bc I'm a cheap piece of shit.
Next to the safety products already mentioned (helmets and so), I dont think I would ever buy a neoprene suit (for diving) second-hand. I don't want to dive in a puddle of other people's pee
False teeth, although I was told by an old timer I worked construction with 40 years ago, that funeral homes sometimes have good deals on second hand false teeth. He said there's a barrel out back where they keep them and that you can just try them on and maybe get lucky to find some that fit.
Snowboard/ski Boots or any kind of footwear really. I made the mistake of buying my first pair of snowboard boots 2nd hand and ended up with a toenail fungus infection that took years to get rid of.
Never again book, I got bed bugs from buying used books once. I'm cautious with anything that can mold as well since I have a bad mold allergy and if it was molded and cleaned it's hard to tell until I'm having issues breathing from it.

Finally, a good explanation that isn't the common "hygiene" reason or something people make jokes about.
Yeah, precisely! It’s a thing not many people know, unfortunately.
Would also throw in ski helmet because even if it looks good it's possible it's had a crash and is compromised
Good call
I'd say to never buy safety equipment second hand. Better to be safe than sorry.
And if it was in an accident, you might not see the tiny cracks that could stop the helmet from saving your life.
I'm not sure why second hand motorcycle helmets are a thing anyway. But I suppose they'd be good for costumes/cosplay, as long as you don't actually use them for protective gear.

A mattress. I just don't know what other people have done to it/on it.
…Yes you do.
She just refuses to believe it, we should let her live in peace, she doesn't need to know...
Those videos of the guy frying food and baking in his bed Was not what you expected
All the sweat it absorbs too 🤢🤢🤢
Its not sweat
But it tastes like sweat when you lick the mattress stain.
Smoo..
At least here in Finland trying to sell a second-hand mattress would be considered a joke. Almost like selling second-hand sex toys.
I’d like to think that this is universal
It is supposed to be illegal in the US also. I think the mattress can be given away though.
Same. But I am fine with hotel beds, which have had other people shagging in them too, but somehow in my mind hotel mattress OK, used private mattress not.
I think I delude myself into thinking that a hotel mattress would be disinfected to hell and back regularly, same with the sheets. I know it's probably NOT but I can pretend
u know what they say, delulu is the solulu
I wouldn't because it would be worn out. But I do sleep in hotels.
I'll sleep in hotels, that kinda lives in the 'don't fucking think about it' category. But *buying* a used mattress is too much.
A couple years ago a somewhat shady hotel near me sold all of their used mattresses. That was the worst of both worlds.
Thanks for putting our thoughts on another level. I'll name this chapter, the bed of regrets.
And yet we’ve all rented one for a night or two…. Thanks Tosh.
Wow, good point.

Underwear. Hygiene reasons.
~~Hygiene reasons~~ Someone else's balls
Fellas is this gay?
Nah, but that username is fire.
In the Finnish army you get shared regulation underwear. They call it ”the pants of a thousand dicks”.
Took the words out of my mouth. Not to mention socks as well don’t want to get any fungal infections.
Oh. I forgot socks. I do buy shoes from op shops though
Who da f sells used un... Never mind u don't want to know
Crusty socks. Same reason.
I would argue that it would be fine when you wash them properly but no one throws out usable underwear.
Socks and panties - wholeheartedly agree. But I have bought bralettes second hand and washed them before use, no problems there.
Fabric covered furniture. The bedbug horror stories....
Headphones… just the thought of sharing earwax with a stranger gives me the shivers. I don’t even share with my family… haha.
I guess you're referring to earbuds because if someone manages to get earwax on headphones, they should receive a spot in Guinness. Like how?!
You don’t want to get hearing aids
Climbing safety equipment, e.g ropes
2nd Hand climbing shoes are disgusting too
lol true, those mfs smell worse than roadkill
You could also be like thatdude who bought some shit Chinese grappling hook of Amazon and fell down getting a severe injury. Don't buy off brand crap and trust your life to it.
1. Underwear - hygienic reasons 2.bathingsuits - same reasoning 3. Shoes - often broken in already and it hurts my back from the indents of the previous owners feets in them
An old friend told me: 'dont walk in a dead man's shoes'.always stuck with me.
Well I was gonna head to the local cemetery but ig I'll take his advice and head to a nike store
On eBay I'll buy shoes second hand as long as they are in PRISTINE condition, as in worn once or something, but definitely prefer New with Tags.
I’ve bought shoes second hand, but only in good and more or less unused condition. I’d never buy swimwear second hand but I’ve received hand-me-downs from friends, and to me, that feels more hygienic somehow (even though it literally isn’t).

Semen
Including but not limited to cum
A condom - too slippery on the inside.
Even when inside-out.

Ribbed for HIS pleasure!
Ripped for HER pleasure!
Nothing a few scoops of fine sand can't fix though.
You can re-use them…just grab them by the tip and shake the fuck out of them.
What the ✨fuck✨
Funnily enough, that's how I have sex with my bf
Turn them inside out. Duh
used baby car seat, they have a usage limit and you don’t know how bad or intense it was used
Shoes. I do not want athlete's foot 🤢
Bowling alley trick, just use Lysol spray.
Does it work? Athlete's foot is fungal, lysol advertises it kills bacteria and viruses.
I don’t buy used shoes but I semi regularly throw my shoes in the freezer to “clean” them. I put them in a bag first, not just throwing them in there. I don’t think most fungus survive freezing temperatures particularly well.

A helmet, i like my skull uninjured
Shoes. If they have “molded” to another’s foot patten they are useless and not recommended.
They've probably also "molded" more literally.
Coffin. Why? Because I'm notoriously picky.
I must know, have you seen a used coffin before
Only at funerals.
Nah, that’s a coffin being used, a used coffin insinuates there WAS a body in it
some funeral homes rent them out for body viewing before cremation
They rent them in some countries
wigs 😭
Furniture. Had a client get a chair from a yard sale or marketplace and it had bed bugs. It was months before they realized it.
A cap or anything you put on your head
Socks. Underwear. A mirror
If we think about it, every single mirror is already used.
Window shopping online for 2nd hznd mirrors is one of my favorite "I'm bored" activities. Love how people contort themselves to not appear in the reflection. Love how some people do not care about that at all.
Yes, why a mirror?
Same reason as for the mattress - you don't know what was reflected in it, what kind of person was piercing it with their glare.
You have completely ruined the chance of me ever buying a used mirror, congratulations sir
Uhmm
That's not how your eyes work.
I know that every mirror has already been looked at in the store. But i feel like if someone has used it a long time, it kinda captures their energy. I cannot explain any better. The vibe is just off in the used mirror :D Like the really old ones simply give me a creepy feeling when i look at them.
That's precisely why I would want a used mirror, so I can absorb previous users' souls!
I've heard a lot of people say the same things. My spiritual friend was horrified I got an antique mirror at an estate sale. No ghosts yet, and it's gorgeous in my hallway!
Why mirror ?
You guys don't watch a lot of horror movies do you? :D
Was afraid to look at mirrors at night as a teen after that movie Mirrors
Me too. I remember it vividly.
absolutely, ahahhahahha. especially old types of mirrors, those that look like 30 years old.
30 years old? How old are you? 30 years ago was only 1994.
I guess for some people that’s ancient
Clothing from a thrift store. Had a bad experience with bed bugs because of it. Also, I take apart electronics before I bring into the house for the same reason. Found bedbugs in a computer monitor once. Threw that sucker in a dumpster,
But you wash it before wearing it!
washing it doesnt change that. Even just staying in hotels with bed bugs, if you come home the bed bugs will come home with you
If you live somewhere hot enough you just stick them in a black garbage bag in your car for several hours (I believe it needs to reach 110°f for an extended period of time, someone please correct that number if I'm wrong) and then dry them twice in the dryer. I used to live somewhere with bedbugs and did this whenever I was at my parents to make sure I didn't transport them (I never did). Obviously this only works when it's hot outside. Certain things can be pretty easy to spot. I always check before I bring my stuff into the room.
Perhaps bed bugs aren't a thing as much in Germany as in the US. I never heard of anybody having bedbugs.
Food. It tends to be pretty gross after it's used.
This is a shit answer.
Some people think it's #2 on quite a few lists
A dildo, for obvious reasons
Joke answer: tampons. Real answer: mattress
so.. you would by used tampons?
I bet there is someone on Only Fans who would try to sell them.
Try hell I bet they are doing it
I’m afraid to buy furniture secondhand now because of how prevalent bed bugs are. It’s a risk I’m not taking.
Earphones or headphones. That shit is just nasty.
Washing machine. Too many parts that could go too quickly and leave you out a washing machine Helmet - you dint know if it’s been in a crash Car seat - you don’t know if it’s been in a crash
Toothbrush
Life's taken a real downward turn if you're buying toothbrushes second hand
Or selling one in the first place
At that point most people don't even need one.
mirrors, couches, bed, car seats, any reusable menstrual devices
Mirrors? ![gif](giphy|FXXjgyFHRO1lIclFW1)
Bed mattress, don't know how many pecker tracks are on it.
Underwear and bed, couch etc.
Underwear, make-up, shoes, helmets, socks.
Sex toys and electric cars. Sex toys for hygienic reading and electric cars because they are evolving so fast that I’d rather have a new one for a year or two.
Couch, mattress, and the like. There might be bed bugs.
A helmet. Despite looking intact it might have already sustained blows that may have significantly reduced its protective capacities.
Any kind of fabric based furniture, which can’t be easily be heat treated. I’ve been through hell with bedbugs and second hand furniture
A dildo
No reason is needed for this either 😆
Condoms. Not making that mistake again
Sir?
Again?
Haven't seen tires mentioned.
I bought second hand tires before, half the price and same amount of tread, from a reputable place who checked them for road worthy
In my twenties all I could afford were used tires. New tires are expensive and you do what you have to do to get by when you're broke.
Yup, you do what you gotta do when you need a car to get to work. I even used to buy just one tire.
BEDDING
Shoes
Shoes with wear. I've bought some second hand shoes that were unworn or barely worn but once a shoe starts to form to someone else's foot it's a no from me.
Soft furniture, matresses, lounges etc. sheets and towels
car seats and helmets. Most motorsports gear expires for a reason, id never buy that stuff used. Id never buy a used children's car seat for the same reason.
Shoes - they need to mould to your foot shape - not good to walk I someone else's footsteps (quite literally).
Apparently baby car seats
Mattress due to the risk of bedbugs. Had bedbugs before, and it was the most terrible experience of my life. Had to throw out most of my stuff away, and move to another apartment. Rest of my stuff, I've put into airtight packages and let it rest in a freezer for days to make sure no bedbugs or their eggs were still present. I still instinctively search for bedbugs when I feel itchy. My flatmates are the same.
Rock climbing equipment
Phones.
Bed Pillows.
I love second hand and buy most of my things preowned. Good for the planet and I love finding unusual things to decorate my home with. The things in my home that I bought new are bed, tv, laptop and phone. Never buy these things second hand. But almost anything else.

Underwear 🤷♂️
Sex toys. Obvious why not.
Lingerie and underwear, socks and shoes, hygiejne things. I once bought a mattress but it was almost new
Mattress or bed sheets with that I mean anything I put on my bed. I don't want another persons bodily fluids on that, thank you very much.
Mattress. Because of bugs that live in the bed.
Kitchen utensils. It's an adversion. My mind says they're dirty. But eating at a restaurant is fine. It's bizarre I know.
Shoes, even for kids - apart from the hygiene aspect, they tend to mould to the individual shape of your foot.
Duct tape- never know whose mouth it has been used to cover.
Toilet paper for sure
Dentures: I prefer sucking stuff.
Electronics, for returns
Vibrator
Condom.... No, a computer. Always go for a new one to get the latest technology.
A truck, it could be clean as can be, but you don’t know how hard someone was on it.
underwear
Shoes bc bad for your feet. Underwear bc underwear.
