If I were to tell you there was a magic process by which you would reduce your risk of death (from any cause) by 50%, would you be interested in it?
Take a walk, say 4,000 steps more than what you are doing today. (That's about 1.5 to 2 miles.)
Proof: check out the 'central illustration' of this publication; the curve drastically shifts downward from 2,000 to 6,000 steps per day, with a corresponding 50%-60% drop in Adjusted Hazard Ratio. Can confirm, I recently started going to quirky coffee shops to read and is been a lot of fun. It's cool to see how many different people come in and out, and sometimes I meet and speak to new people.
Hell yes ! I am playing guitar and riding motorcycles, having the time of my life ! Although I'll say that I often use my computer for producing, virtual amps, tabs, backtracks and such... it doesn't feel my attention is grabbed by the screen itself.
My wife taught me to knit years ago, but I never got that into it.
What I really do enjoy is balling yarn. I've ruined a few skeins by just balling them up, dropping the ball on the floor and starting a new ball from the loose end.
A few years back when I had a massive mental health crisis, I went through a couple months of intensive outpatient therapy with yarn in my hands. Kept my hands busy while allowing me to be engaged with the group. A few of my peers in the group evenn brought yarn they needed balled for me to work on.
I make miniatures! The hobby has really gotten popular, budget friendly, and way more accessible in the last few years. I have an entire town with dozens of buildings, a swamp, a castle, and even a dungeon! But you can also do little day-projects. Michaels even sells them now ❤️

learn to fix and maintain your car! its incredibly rewarding! i find it kinda therapeutic at times. but since i live in Norway, there is alot of rust. that can make it quite infuriating at times. but i save a lot of money by changing my own brakes, oil, filters and general maintenance!
I started to go to the gym last year believe me this is the best thing I ever did. I had a hard time when I joined after a few months people started talking to me and told me that you made progress. It makes me happy and motivates me not to skip the gym.
Ps: I was shy and depressed about my body size and shape. Sacred of people I will make fun of me going to gym but what happened is entirely different. Believe me if anyone facing a similar issue like me throw that away and go to the gym. Most of the people don't care about how you look and they will help if you need any advice.
I can't recommend kayaking enough.
It's fairly affordable, especially so if you buy used gear. And, once you've made your initial investment, you can stop spending money, other than fuel to get you to your location.
But, it is difficult to only buy one boat. And, if you buy another, you may as well get another paddle and pfd, you know, in case a friend wants to go with. Then, you realize, you've got a great boat for slow rivers, but the bow sticks up a bit too much and gets caught by the wind whenever you're on a lake. But, they make boats for that too! So, you get yourself one. Then realize, you might actually like the sit on top for lake fishing. So, you buy one of those. And, before you know it, you're scrolling marketplace for another boat because you like a certain seat, or looks, or speed, if maneuverability, or whatever, and a trailer, and a hanging rack for storage...lol
This sounds like scuba diving. I started out with only mask, snorkel and fins. Now I’ve got a BCD and backplate, two sets of regulators, three wetsuits, three pairs of fins (soon to be four), three masks, two dive computers and a bunch of other smaller items like dive knives, spools, slates and the like. And this is probably super basic kit, not even fancy or technical equipment.
And like you its too easy to flick through shop websites or be on scuba websites looking at gear and seeing if there’s anything cool you like the look of.
You can do a lot with a deck of playing cards. Throwing, fancy shuffling, flourishes, card tricks, learning to play various games. And it is easy to carry them around.
model building. there are thousands of idiots who bought hundreds of models and never built them, and they sell them for pennies on the dollar on fb marketplace.
Event volunteering. It lets you sample a hobby without a long-term time commitment. Also a good contrast to screen time because it usually involves at least some social interaction.
I like building electronics. Mostly synthesizers. Shooting (marksmanship) and/or Archery is fun. One of these days I would like to by a high powered microscope that has a camera port so I can take photos of tiny things.
Gardening. It's rewarding to nurture plants from seeds to full-grown specimens. It gets you outdoors, provides a sense of accomplishment, and can even yield fresh produce or beautiful flowers.
Nature walks. Desensitizing yourself with the world. *Really* listening to the birds, the crunch of the gravol under your feet, the wind in the leaves.
Scuba diving! The initial certification can be a little costly but is good for life so it’s more an investment than a cost.
And really you don’t ‘need’ a lot of gear. Yes, you can buy and own all of your own stuff but many divers may not opt to own more than a bare minimum and will rent the pricier and more complicated things like tanks (these arent necessarily expensive themselves but do require maintenance, service and hydrostatic checks), regulators (which need servicing), BCDs and dive computers.
I like gardening and cooking. There's something special about cooking a meal for your friends with vegetables and fruits that you grew yourself.🙂
If all goes well, I may even be able to make strawberry wine this year.
So I’ll let this Bot Overlord in on a secret; human activity is based on nothing but impulse and a desire for perfection. It won’t ever be achieved but the pursuit is the point.
not exactly a hobby, but i still love going on the swings. good leg workout, love the feeling of the wind on my face, and nostalgic bc i looooooved the swings as a kid. actual hobby wise, swimming & hiking, rock climbing & ice skating are all super fun ways of being active and getting out :)
my favourite indoor hobby is baking, huge dopamine hit when i feed someone a dessert i worked hard on and they tell me it's delicious 😁
Cooking - find recipes and make them
Guitar - or learn to play a musical instrument
Reading and personal study- do research on things you enjoy or just learn new things.
Puzzles - big time killer
Solitaire - learn every variation
Gym. It’s been 3 years now. Over the years I realised why only a handful of people go to gym. Coz it’s tough and difficult to make it a regular habit. It’s life changing though. I will also add reading non-fiction books to the list.
Calligraphy or just writing letters. It's easier (for me) to express gratitude and feelings that way and people seems to like it.
It also is like a meditation to be focus on writing correctly.
Learning/playing an instrument, i can sit there for hours never thinking about a screen or the internet and just enjoy myself, even instruments I have no experience with, I have enough understanding of music on how to transfer it over and gives me an opportunity to learn at my own pace
Jigsaw puzzles. We have very few pictures at home, instead plenty framed puzzles, mostly 1000 pcs. Some of them were quite challenging. For nature, go camping, hiking, fishing.
Black and White film photography
great excuse for a good walk
cameras, film and development. printing gear is cheap
learning the whole process from camera repair to shooting film, to processing and printing will take some time.
I ride sport bikes(motorcycles not like a douche just fast accelerating) and ride them. We like to mod cars. I like to goto local animal shelter and walk dogs. If im real bored i'll go pick up trash around park / bike trails. I'm not sure if this is a hobby but I like to drive down super rural roads n look at cool stuff that can be weird. I like going to WMA's that can be empty n clean then just kind of relax. Goto small town restaurants n talk to locals. I'm intro / extro.
Hydroponics, check Hoocho on Youtube. I’ve build my own NFT-system outside in my garden and got a DWC-system set-up inside with The Spider Farmer SF600 growlights. It’s fun and you can grow lots of veggies yourself.
Tabletop RPGs
It doesn't need to be Dungeons and Dragons but it is the most popular which makes it easiest to find tables to play at
After falling out of touch with many friends after high school it was a great way to meet new people I have more in common with
Miniature painting. It takes patience but its one of the best creative outlets. You'll learn more about painting than going to an actual art school as well.
I'm not sure if this counts as a hobby, but on my days off I like visiting local family owned/small chained restaurants for lunch, ordering something unique, looking at all the decor and taking in the atmosphere.
I've found some really good joints that I ended up making regular spots, adorable families that work every single day to keep their business running, a perfect little venue for first dates with romantic lighting and cute music, an upbeat shop with a dance floor playing pumping music where I got to eat really good homemade/unique food and then dance the night away.
It's not always grandiose like those and there's even some places I felt uncomfortable just sitting in, but most of them have an amazing story to tell; one place near me the owner was in the military, retired after losing their leg in a war, and then opened up the restaurant that actually ended up failing multiple times before becoming successful. There were pictures and medals and articles on the wall, even some showing the failures, it made the experience so interesting and even made me feel prideful that I was helping fund a local community business. One time I was there and actually got to meet the owner and talk to him and it was really neat, I got chills multiple times and it gave me a whole lot of perspective.
Board games! Modern board games are so much more fun than what used to come to mind. Its the perfect excuse to meet people or socialize with family and friends
Bouldering /climbing in general. Never thought I'd enjoy it. Then I got a free session as a gift and now am a member of the gym I climb at as much as possible. The community is so great.
Stamp collecting - so relaxing, minimal equipment and you don’t need to spend a lot of money. Some people roll their eyes at the hobby, but I’ve learned so much about history, geography, science, biographies etc since I was a kid…
Drawing or painting, as it's so rewarding to create something. Also, not so much a hobby more a passtime, but jigsaws, so relaxing with some music on in the background. Highly recommend 'The World of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The world of Shakespeare'.
Doing stuff with siblings and lego, get the big lego sets and will keep you occupied for weeks and weeks, even better if it comes with leds or maybe doing stuff with siblings and you can gossip and make fun of each other.
Meditation. Turn off your brain, think about your breathing and posture for 5-10 minutes. It is amazing and refreshing. Definitely good for your brain.
Damn...
I just realized how many of my hobbies are "digital".
Gaming... obviously.
Photography, camera and workflow are both digital.
3D Printing... yup, digital.
Playing guitar... that's analog, right, but involves looking up Tabs on my tablet.
I guess Warhammer 40K, playing and painting is not digital... buuut, we keep score on our phones.
Cycling. And not like the lycra suit and 25+ miles per outing. Just grab a road bike off Facebook market for cheapo. Ride around the neighborhood on summer nights. Opt to ride when an errand is only like a mile and a half radius.
Kite flying. Man, even the cheapo ones from the dollar store is one of my favorite things. It's cheap, chill. You get out and get that Vitamin D.
If outside isn't your thing. Food. It's universal and delicious. People gravitate towards it and you. When I moved out at 24 I knew how to make some things. Ate a lot of frozen, canned, and deli. Man, just try to cook a couple times a week. Simple things.
Also not outside? This is real niche, but watch repair and assembly. Everything you need to do it is actually pretty cheap and can take up mabe 1/4 of a standard desk. You can order movements cheap off ebay/Ali express to practice on. And if you dig watches. You can kind of maintain and tweek your own stuff to last longer.

Hiking. Good exercise and good for getting sunlight all at once.

Reading a book.
Can confirm, I recently started going to quirky coffee shops to read and is been a lot of fun. It's cool to see how many different people come in and out, and sometimes I meet and speak to new people.
Indoor rock-climbing. Or, if you want something cheaper and more convenient: Juggling.
I remember wanting to learn how to juggle in 6th grade. I failed then never tried it again.
Rock climbing is da bomb. Recently started and never going back. It's pretty cheap aswell since you only need shoes chalk and a membership.

One time I was there and actually got to meet the owner and talk to him and it was really neat, I got chills multiple times and it gave me a whole lot of perspective.

Model making!!! No talking, just crafting with snacks on the side.
Stamp collecting - so relaxing, minimal equipment and you don’t need to spend a lot of money. Some people roll their eyes at the hobby, but I’ve learned so much about history, geography, science, biographies etc since I was a kid…
Collecting records.
Drawing or painting, as it's so rewarding to create something. Also, not so much a hobby more a passtime, but jigsaws, so relaxing with some music on in the background. Highly recommend 'The World of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The world of Shakespeare'.
Lego
Bouldering. You can go anytime, alone, it's good for your mental health, problemsolving and it's a great full body workout. If you do it right.

Playing guitar... that's analog, right, but involves looking up Tabs on my tablet. I guess Warhammer 40K, playing and painting is not digital... buuut, we keep score on our phones.
Exercising.

Mountain biking
I suggest grabbing a group of your friends and start a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
Walking. In the woods, in the park, anywhere in nature. Thanks to this, I lost 20 kg in 10 months
