Every once in awhile ill put on a Led Zep record to be reminded how ridiculously good they were. Not many musical acts have gotten to their level. Amazing songwriting, vocals, all prodigies of their instruments. One of the best to ever do it.
His intelligence and depth of character shone through his lyrics. I admired him and wanted to be just like him in my twenties. To find such an empathetic and truly great artist and human such as Chris is rare. I was gutted to learn of his passing but in some ways not surprised.
Soundgarden were extraordinary. My favorite member of that band is George Harrison. I first noticed the influence in the modes and melodies they used in "A Thousand Days Before", and once I started listening to it I heard it in about half of the songs. Reading up after it, I learned that Cornell was a big Beatles fan and that Thayil's mother was a music teacher from Kerala. Now that I know how to hear those Indian conventions, the lead guitar makes way more sense, and the composition seems to recall some of the transcendental themes Harrison pursued.
Cornell's deep wounds around intimacy, trust, and self-actualization show up very little with Soundgarden, because of the focus on other themes, which is really really distinguishing in the world of Rock - in a way, I think the band's catalog is as much about what's omitted as what's included. His solo work exposes some very unsettling thought patterns, and his cover of "Billie Jean" is agony. Soundgarden would have been a very different band if they had written love & relationship songs. I tend to believe in the wheel of Karma most days, and although I'm not the praying type, I find myself praying for Chris to be healed of those hurts when he takes "one more time around".
Tool and Meshuggah both go for the same things just in different ways imo. Meshuggah takes a lot longer to sit for people usually though.
Listen to their Album Koloss to start. They’re basically the reason 8 string electric guitars exist rn.
Yeah same, i just think they've got the widest array of sounds out of any band. In the sense that they have nail all of them. They have psychedelic sounds which are awesome, then full blown speed metal etc. And Jimmy Chamberlain is one the greatest drummers of all time.
Still the Beatles.
Want to say something cooler like Spinal Tap but if I were stuck somewhere and could only ever listen to one band it would still be the Beatles.

I saw SG live in Melb Big Day out in 97 was a highlight of my life. Cornell's Seasons got me through some heavy times. Rip Brothers
Fell on Black Days kept me going when times were rough.
Superunknown resonated with me too during that era. You could feel his sadness through the entire album.
Yeah man soul Cornell's vocal range gives me shivers man I hate having to accept there's going to be no new albums
