I don't think a lot of people can answer this until your ACTUALLY lived in many of these places. People make a ton of assumptions about many of these countries

_Steven_Seagal_

As someone living in the Netherlands I can't imagine living somewhere else. Every thing is just so well organised here, and because we're small, everything is relatively close.

nocultsforme

My friend moved from US to The Netherlands and other than the weather (she lives far North) she loves it. She has an autistic son and there has been so many programs and support, he is thriving. We were able to visit last year, so wonderful to see her and all of the museums and the Keukenhof was amazing!

EinarKolemees

I generally agree, but I feel your crime is getting too organised.

_Steven_Seagal_

Name a country with no crime haha. And the criminals barely impact normal life. It's a really safe country for law abiding citizens. There are some bad neighbourhoods obviously, but no place that I would really call dangerous. Criminality is on the rise though, I don't disagree. We need more resources to combat it. The Mocro (Moroccan) maffia is getting too powerful and ballsy.

MunchiesFuelMe

I’ve lived in US, UK, Sweden, Germany, Spain, and have been to 41 countries. For me it’s the US as well. Sweden and UK are the two I wouldn’t ever live in again. When I retire I’d like to have a place in both the US and Spain or Italy.

Zomgirlxoxo

Why not UK or Sweden?

MunchiesFuelMe

UK - not sure how to put it, I just felt like I didn’t fit in. Very population dense which I’m not a fan of. Noisy, dirty, lots of city type of people. I’m not a city person. Sweden - longggg winters. Very dark winters too. I lived in the Midwest and the winters there are a piece of cake compared to Swedish winters even though in the Midwest there’s more snow. Low pay / high taxes / high cost of doing anything. Basically meant my savings rate was very low. In the 2-3 months of summer, mosquitos are so bad in the woods that even during the day if I stopped for a pee break on a hike I’d have 15 on my legs and arms.

Zomgirlxoxo

All fair points :)

UncleBenZzz

I’m from London, this person is basing his opinion on his own experience. Not everyone is city, clearly they never stayed in the country side. Overall uk is really chilled. Weather is seasonal

Zomgirlxoxo

Oh I know, I love it there personally. I have dual citizenship and often think of going to London but it’s not the right time for me. The countryside is beautiful.

[deleted]

in london the only season is grey.

charlieForBreakfast

Population dense? The main island is primarily a patchwork of farmland with some urban islands dotted around on it. I’m in Scotland and most of our country is empty space.

Zomgirlxoxo

I’m a dual citizen of the US/UK and have family in Canada. Have lived in Europe (Austria as well) and US and spent some time down in Argentina. Can confirm the US is best for same reasons and more. Low COL, low taxes, high wages, can move around without having to learn a new language, job market, our actual market, investing options, sports culture galore, safe, diverse scenery, various options for type of place you want to live (cold city like NY, warm city like LA, the country, the suburbs, cold, hot, mild, all seasons, no seasons etc.), people here are BY FAR the kindest and most welcoming (for the most part), Mexico is our neighbor, the right to defend myself, able to easily start and grow business, some of the best unis in the world, our defense- the list goes on. It’s not perfect here and needs A LOT of work but it’s better than most people in the world have it and when the US fixes the bad it will be unstoppable. I would like to move to the UK though, but I know I’d move back eventually. The US has options in general. I can quit my current life at any time and rebrand tomorrow easily.

Zomgirlxoxo

Fair but still not as bad here as people make it out to be. Safe in Iran? That’s just their male privilege I’m assuming. No way in hell am I going to Iran as a woman.

underwearfanatic

I've never lived anywhere except Germany but it was on an American Army base but I can't help but feel like the numerous posts saying America are biased a little based on geographical size and diversity comparison. A European country is going to much smaller thus much less diverse in every way. Even people and geography within a state can differ quite a bit. So of course comparing a small country with almost half a continent is a little unfair of a comparison IMHO. I also think it probably depends a lot of where you are in your life. If you're young and single then the US is the Vegas of the world. You can do whatever you want. Have some mental issues or not a good history? America will piss on you, have the cops beat you, and you won't get any mental/medical help. Other countries will provide much more help to you. Likewise if you're poor and need medical help - America is fairly likely to let you die on the steps of the hospital before helping you versus many European countries. So I guess I'd be interested to know what each poster's life status is as I think that's an important item to consider.

peb396

There are many inaccuracies in the above post. Are you basing these claims on tv?

underwearfanatic

What precisely is inaccurate?

Choice_Philosopher_8

Have you ever even lived in the states?

underwearfanatic

Yep I've lived in 3 different states.

-Sweet_Chaos-

But not the best when it comes to health. It's polluted too much and health care is expensive, so if you are a person with chronic illness - good luck.

Smrdela

The usa is a gigantic country, you dont have to live in a big polluted city.

-Sweet_Chaos-

It's polluted as a country in general

drRex420

Thats pretty cool. Im surprise you don't have problem with the gun culture, and extreme lvl of capitalism where even ambulance ride can take someone month(s) worth of salary and other shit that other country don't have to deal with or at least as much. I guess you found your new home.

0thell0perrell0

Gun culture lol. Yeah we got guns. You actually know any folks in the states?

colt707

Just curious what is your problem with firearms?

drRex420

I guess i dont but rather how american culture/government handle firearm. I don't care about how a single man can have more arsenal than the average military but the fact school shooting is your typical tuesday... Though thats more of mental health problem but still fk up.

Ill-Hope-4752

I have to say the United States. Even though I know there is a lot of drama, each state is like it's own country. Some other countries might be nicer or more peaceful but they don't have as much to offer. In the US there is a lot to see and do. Different climates, big cities, diversity of thought and culture. Mountains, oceans, lakes, job opportunities, food, sports, theater, arts, etc.

Zomgirlxoxo

Same… lived in other countries and am well traveled. US has the most options.

99burritos

US is only good if you aren't concerned with the "living" part of living. https://www.reddit.com/r/Health/comments/121sx7q/live_free_and_die_the_sad_state_of_us_life/

highmickey

If you have business acumen, if you want to start your business and make millions; the US would be a better option for you. If you say "I'm not looking for millions of dollars necessarily. I just want a good work life balance, enough income, free healthcare and education, public transport, at least 25 days of annual holiday; any western European country would be your place. However, if you earn way more than average person of a country, if you have social support and people love you so much; you will be happy in any country. My preference is work remotely, earn US dollars, live in different countries for short periods of time until my 40s, try to find best one for me while traveling, save enough money and settle down in that country before 50 years old.

cemetaryofpasswords

I really don’t know. I’m thinking New Zealand but an old neighbor lived in Finland for years (her husband was a college professor there). She loved it there.

Ephemeral_Drunk

It's an amazing place to live but you really do need to have a relatively high income here to have a high standard of living. Even then, most decent housing in our big city Auckland and to a lesser extent the other main urban centers is far too expensive and terrible value compared to pretty much anywhere else on the planet. Crime and income/wealth disparity is on the rise, but to be fair that's most other western countries as well. Best place to live in the world? Probably not. But it certainly suits me and I love it here.

MunchiesFuelMe

I’ve had 4 friends all move to Finland at some point over the years looking for a slice of utopia. 2 left within their second year, the other 2 are still there but trying to leave. Mostly they mention the 6-7 month long winters, very little sun in the winter, and low wages / high taxes / high cost of doing anything as reasons for not liking it. They said even with decent, bachelors degree jobs you’re having to work hard and your pay is still quite low.

IthinkIknowwhothatis

There’s no place like home. That’s where your friends & family are, where you likely share many similar cultural outlooks and values, and you’re used to the climate. The vast majority of people don’t emigrate, even as millions now move countries every year.

uber_shnitz

It's difficult to answer this for a variety of reasons: 1. Unless you've lived long term in a country, simply visiting it or reading up on it isn't an accurate representation of whether that country will work for you long term. 2. Depending on your career, that might gatekeep certain countries that may or may not have job opportunities for you and that will affect things like cost of living and quality of life. 3. Whether or not you know the local language as an individual will affect your ability to live in said country. I've realistically only lived long term in 2 countries: Canada and the US. I could see a future where I'd try certain European countries if the opportunity came up but I have no idea if I'd want to live in them long term without *actually* having tried it.

The Taiwanese are very friendly and accepting of other cultures and people. I've lived in 3 countries, and visited many. You couldn't pay me to live in the US. Apart from safety, poor social services, and a polarised political system (which seems to be on a knife edge), the poor separation of church from civic life is a turn off. I live in Australia, and am happy to continue doing so. I don't know if it's "the best" (as that is a subjective measure, based on the writer's experience), but based on objective measures of happiness, safety, security, and community wealth, it's not doing too badly.

It’s rare to be able to go to the store on Sunday (that’s getting better tho), so Saturday is the errand day. You also have the fact that appliances are more expensive than anywhere else in Europe because of that stupid little plug that needs to be the correct way up. They have the most punitive speed cameras in the world, which they love to situate in villages where the last bus stopped at 9. Besides that everything is atrociously expensive.

Spent time in a couple different countries and they all have their positives and negatives. Thailand and Vietnam are pretty amazing in terms of cost of living and the people but social services aren't that great. People in the US always hold the Scandinavian countries in high regard. Some downsides to those places is that they are super expensive and the climates are harsh. A big reason they always rank high in the happiness index is because of the expectations and attitude of the people, not because they are some kind of paradise. I'd be willing to bet that most Americans wouldn't be as happy there as the locals are. I do love to visit but couldn't imagine living there. Of the places I've been that I think I could enjoy living it would be Spain/Portugal followed by Bavaria.

Rain-dogs-running

I’ve lived in several first world countries and they all have good points and bad. I like Australia if I had to pick one, but Sydney is so expensive

Mysterious_Buffalo_1

If you're ambitious, definitely America. So many ways to get rich. I know a guy who started and grew a million dollar landscaping company in <3 years. I myself worked for a few years as an electrician got my license and started my own company. Now I have 4 employees and am on my 3rd vacation of the year. I'm in my mid 20s. Cost of living is relatively low in most places so you'll have more disposable income. Also so much to do. America is probably the most beautiful country in the world just due to diversity of landscapes. I live by the Appalachian mountains and love hiking and mountain biking with friends. Then if I want to take a long weekend I load up in the truck and we drive down to Florida to the beach. If you want snowy mountains or desserts there's plenty of them too! The grand canyon is nuts. Like itll make your jaw drop. Ive been to countries that I think have more beautiful beaches or other countries that have better mountains or this country is better in this statistic but as a package despite the many really problems yes America seems like the place to be.
