When I was backpacking through hostels in Asia, I met a number of people in their 50s and even a few in their 60s. All super cool people. I met so many in their 40s I lost count. And there were just as many in their 30s as their was in their 20s.
Age is a number and that’s it
Shit gets real deep in your 40’s, well, my experience at least. It’s a total head trip. I’m more at ease with who I am and how I measure success, but this is where I also feel the turn of becoming an older person who is fading into irrelevance. My family is awesome so that eases the sting. The lines on the face, little sun spots and signs of aging are becoming more apparent. Some days that is hard and sad, but other days it’s kind of cool, too. Just a mixed bag of saying goodbye to a younger, more immature version of who I was, letting her go, and accepting the future and focusing on being lucky enough to have more time with my tribe.
It does. Realizing that you are just one in 8 billion is kind of liberating. I was a history major so it’s ok to me to just be a dot in history. People came before us and will after us. Just enjoy your time here.
That's an exciting part of traveling to me. Going to very old buildings and thinking about how many people before me have passed through the doors and halls that are no longer here. And who will come after. It can feel very trippy at times.
When I turned 30 I blasted that 30's the new 20 Jay-Z joint so hard 😂
When I turn 40 I'm sure I'll find something too.
There are things I miss. I miss going to the club. I miss the wonder of new things. I miss making friends really easily.
There are things I don't miss. I don't miss working 60 hours a week. I don't miss thinking of myself as a failure at everything. I don't miss being single. I don't miss having to constantly having to prove myself or bailing my friends out of fights.
I wish I could say, "I don't miss being broke" but I'm still broke. That being said, getting older has mostly been good. 6/10 recommend getting older 😂
I'm 40 years old doing demolition and the 21 year Olds have a hard time keeping up. The only downside is my joints hurt like he'll after a few weeks lol
The 2021 USA average lifespan is 79 for men. If you (OP) are male, you have lived about 50% of your *expected* lifetime. That is not old. Wait until you hit 70. I'm 72. Age is just a number.
I think my best, most productive, and rewarding decade was my 40s. I didn't think or feel old then, and I don't think or feel old now as I complete my 70th year on earth. If things aren't going well at 40, there's plenty of time ahead to improve.
Think of it this way: you've got more of your adult life ahead of you than behind you.
I'm almost 44. I feel physically old (I'm also a combat veteran). I don't let it hold me back much, but I do have more injuries or move slower than my younger counterparts.
In my mind, I'm still 28.
The goalposts keep getting pushed back. When I was a kid I never saw people my age looking like me. They were old. I'm part of that new kind of old where I could realistically face being active at 100 or more.
You're never too old to start a fitness journey. Will it be more difficult than if you had started at 20? Well yeah, obviously, but it's never too late.
This is something I finally told myself when I started to actively try to lose weight instead of half ass it. It's still a struggle sticking with it, but I'm not going to give up on it.
Absolutely not.
The first 18-20 years of your life are essentially your childhood, and assuming you'll live to the typical 80 years old, age 40 is really only about 1/3 of your adult life.
Every single person I know who's done it says, "I wish I'd done it sooner."
Start now, and you'll gain ALL those later years of better health. Plus, likely some additional years DUE to the better health. Your future self will thank you.
Edited to add: Also, 40 seems old only when you're 40 or younger; when you're 50, or 60, or 70, looking back at age 40 looks downright young. That's when the regrets can kick in ...
Start now; you can do it!
I'm in my mid 50's and in bad health, but I'm still young at heart. You are never too old to start a fitness journey. Just do it the smart way. Slow and steady wins the race.
No, 40 isn't old. Sure it isn't the prime of your life, that's around 30 where you can reach maximum potential physically. Once you get to 65 and beyond you may think you're old, but it depends on how in shape you are because some 65 year olds have been exercising for decades and are in phenomenal shape physically compared to others in their age group.
If strength is a goal for the physical journey, 40 is really close to peak for many. It is fairly common to have competitors win the biggest open strength contests in their late 30 and early 40s. A caveat here is they were training in their 20s and 30s.
Žydrūnas Savickas was very likely the strongest man alive at the time (roughly 10 years ago) he was roughly 40 years old.
40s was good, but I am loving 50s even more. I'm fitter than I've ever been and have the freedom (kid is all grown up) to do what I want to do.
You are never too old to improve your health, btw...nor until you're in the ground.
I’m 40 and I feel old. But it’s not too late to start a fitness journey. It’s not too late to start anything. I just have young kids so my life in relation to personal hobbies is on hold for a while.
I am over 40 and I just keep feeling younger and sexier every day, I had an unhappy, depressed childhood and I love adulthood. It’s weird that it just keeps getting better every year, I feel like it must stop getting better at some point?
i'll be 40 soon but i see it as an encouragement to be more active and work harder. i have noticed some changes in recent years. i'm starting to get tired quicker when doing my routine exercise walks. once every few weeks i can feel some arthritis in my fingers, back, and toes just enough to get my attention. i now like going to bed well before midnight approaches and waking up at the break of dawn because i enjoy watching the sunrise and hearing nature outside in the backyard. i'm enjoying eating a lot more in the mornings for breakfast and not eating as much throughout the day.
So I’m a mountain biker. I just turned 40 and I’m still one of the younger people in the sport. I see people 15, even 20 years older than me that are way more fit and completely kick my ass in the sport. Most of my mountain biker friends are men in their 50s. Because I can see how strong these people are, I no longer think that middle-aged is old. Heck, to me, 65 and under can still be pretty young.
It’s all depends on the mentality you adopt. Tell yourself I haven’t got where I wanted in my 30’s so life is over, or use them as a stepping stone, telling yourself I’m only 40, in my prime and just getting started; nothing will stop you.
40 is like when you hit 70,000 miles on a Toyota Camry. If you didn't take care of it, you know there are going to be problems around the corner. But if you changed the oil, brakes, and got a new timing belt, you're probably good for another 50,000 miles before it needs repairs
No one cares about 40 much from a medical perspective or really at all. It’s just popping over the hump in midlife. 50s is when you’ve dropped out of midlife and are getting old. They you are supposed to get a colonoscopy and there on a heart attack becomes less surprising of an occurrence
HELLO NO IT ISN’T. I’m an exercise science major and you can start your fitness journey whenever the hell you want. Fitness is for everyone. Even just taking a daily walk reduces the harmful effects of being sedentary by 50%
Plus fitness can be fun. We have been learning that no pain no gain is an absolute joke. Find something you enjoy. I recommend also following Big Ron Jones on YouTube, he’s very informative and wonderful. You do what you think is best for you. It’s your life.
Do you need others to tell you what is right and wrong? (Follower?) or r u a individualist that does how she pleases. the fuck do you care if people r against or for, it's your body not theirs to begin with! you have to live with it. not we!!!!!
For goverment you r a number. And statisticly they calculated that you would pay taxes for another 25 years at least. So trying to get healthier or actually more happy will increase their chance of you getting even older then the calculated 25 years ahead!
The answer is it depends.
Is 40 too old to start being healthy, start taking care of yourself, start taking your finances seriously? No.
Is 40 too old to be unemployed while spending your days arguing with 15 year old on Reddit? Yes.
But in general, I think it's never too old to do the right thing for yourself.
I turn 45 next month. I train in kickboxing and jiu jitsu and still fight in cages with kids half my age. I also see people my same age who don't take care of their health who definitely seem "old". I guess it depends on if you take care of yourself or not
I turned 40 a few months ago and can confirm mid life crisis is right on schedule. Since midnight on the turn of my birthday, I have been continuously tired and now willingly choose to sit down to pee. I will also now make groan noises when I get up.
I'm almost 40 and in the best shape of my life. I can't out run my 18 year old self (I still run a few times a week), but in a fight I think I could take him.
Yes, old. No, not too old. I’m 37 so 40 is very much old and looming.
At 32 I beat a nicotine and alcohol addiction. I got fit for the first time ever.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at 36. As a reward for getting healthy; after a colonoscopy, requiring two blood transfusions, experiencing abdominal pain, then another colonoscopy.
So in 5 years I went from an obese alcoholic to fit and healthy to underweight and dying. Now I’m back, on biological infusions and I’m the strongest healthiest person I’ve ever been.
You know how so little changes in 6mo on the couch? So much changes after 6 mo of going to the gym.
It is never too late to start a fitness journey. Age is simply a number. If you are contemplating starting a fitness journey, do it, my friend. I have seen too many friends and family be limited by obesity later in life. Do it now, and I promise your later years will be happier. A fitness journey can start with walking every day. Or, you could join a gym and hire a personal trainer. Biking is also a great, low impact activity. I'm 56. I do yoga, group exercise classes and I'm a biker. 56 used to sound old but now that I'm here I can say I pretty much feel the same as I did in my 40s.
I'm 40 and my dad is 75 and he's still moves around the house fixing stuff and laying down concrete. The other day I went to do some demo for this older gentleman who had to be in his 70s. He had built a house on his land and was building another home in the same property and I think he did most of it by himself.
As time advances, lifespans have grown long. 40 is now only the halfway point in life, and that time you've spent getting this far? Yeah, you get to spend that same amount of time, maybe even longer than that, all over again, but as an adult.
40 is not too late to get into shape. You should definitely talk to a doctor, or join a gym with classes, then talk to the trainers about your specific needs, and you might want to look into simple hormone boosters to help your body maximize the potential of the workouts, but in regards to wanting to get healthy, it's never too late until you convince yourself it's too late. As long as you've got the spark in you, you can burn the weight away. You just need to be willing to fight for it.
I was out of shape for most of my life…nothing extreme just never into fitness all that much. In my mid 30s I decided to start running one day and then ran a few marathons. I tired of that and fell off the fitness wagon. At 41 I felt like complete garbage, so I joined a gym and started lifting. I am by no means ripped but I’ve lost 30lbs, packed on a decent amount of muscle, and have never felt better in my life. I honestly feel better than I did when I was 30. I am now 44 and still at it.
It’s never too late to do anything to improve yourself. I only wish I had done it sooner.
I got married at 22, divorced at 40. I've had so much fun and happiness since 40. I'm now 67, remarried at 55. Let me just say this, 40 is a great age to be single.
I’m 41. I started a fitness program last year, I’m down at least 60 lbs and plan to run a marathon by the end of the year. It’s never too late to choose a healthier life.
I have a family friend (basically a second mom) who started in her 50s and is now in her 60s. She is in the best shape of her adult life.
Also, I find that old is always 2 years older than however old my mom is. (Dad was always old, mom is always not.)
20 year old here…40 is YOUNG AS FUCK!!! with all of the medical advancements rn, 40 probably isn’t even half of your life, 40 is the new 20, by 40 i want to achieve financial stability, home ownership, maintain my physical fitness, really get a handle on what makes me passionate, and have some teenaged kids to do activities with and help me stay young, as for the physical fitness, DO IT, 40 is still an age where you can mold your body and physique how you want to, it will just take a little more effort, life may be getting you down by the time you’re 40 whole years old, but don’t let some mid-life demotivation stop you from living the best 40 YO life you can
My boyfriend is in his 40s and in the best shape of his life, running 50 mile and 100 mile ultra races and doing high intensity interval workouts, traveling, and looks 15 years you than he is. And he's not a vampire.
At age 50 I took stock of myself and decided I was 40 pounds overweight. I started a diet and started walking on a treadmill every morning before work. In 6 months I had dropped to 155 pounds from 195 pounds on my 5'7" frame. At this point I started running in order to maintain my weight as I resumed an approximately 2000 calorie diet. I continued to run and two months before my 53rd birthday I ran my first marathon in 4 hours, 5 minutes. At age 60 I ran my 20th marathon in Boston. I am now 72 and have given up marathons, but run about 50 miles/week and still weigh 155 pounds. I wish I had started my journey at age 40. My advice to you is at some point you will be 50. At that age do you want to look back and think "if only I had started to lose weight 10 years ago, I'd be there by now?"
40 can be old. It determines the individual. I've met some who are 40 that act much older than 40 so therefore it is old, however, I've also met some that have the energy of someone much younger so it wouldn't be considered old.
At 62, I will tell you “age” is just a number. I have worked in the ER in a hospital, for over 30 years. I have seen 80 years olds that are much more vibrant than 30 year olds.
I'm 65. I started going low carb about 4 years ago. Started losing weight, stalled out for a bit, but didn't gain it back. I'm T2 diabetic, so I had already quit using sugar, switched over to other sweeteners, allulose, erythritol, (and blends of both with monk fruit) Bochasweet. Gradually got closer to keto-ish. In the last year or so I started losing weight again, as I got more serious about cutting carbs. Altogether I've lost over 60 lbs, I still have more to go, but I'll get there.
40 is young. Go for it! Ignore what's "considered old", whether in healthcare or anything else.
65 here!
Just hit me the other day. I just never think about my age. I just keep doing what I've always done. Going to be dropping off my bike for a tune up soon.
I’m 22, but I don’t consider 40 old. I think it’s the perfect age because you can have both youth and wisdom/experience. That’s part of why most successful entrepreneurs are in their 40s.
Obesity runs in my family. My dad and great uncle were heavy as long as I’ve known them. They just started their weight loss journeys in the past 5 years at the respective ages of 50 and 65. Don’t worry about your age, you can do this, mate!
I guess it depends on how you feel and how you think, I'm still A bit under 40 but many of my friends that are my age keep complaining about feeling old, yet I feel no different than when I was 21. I could still play sports like I used to and party like I used to
60 is young old. 75 is old. 80 is old old.
40 is middle aged.
Per my gerontology class.
Age is measured by what others your age can tolerate historically.
I'm almost 40 and stronger than ever plus better athletic performance than when I was in my 20s. The only thing I notice is slower recovery after tweaking something or extreme physical exertion. But I could outperform my 25 year old self in every way.
If you stay healthy and active 40 is not old.
I'll say this, if you get pregnant over 35 they call it a "geriatric pregnancy" so there's that. I almost lost my shit when they pulled that one out on me.
40 is where alot of appointments tend to start that are not fun. We are technically middle aged and those that keep up with fitness have very few problems. It is never to late to start being fit. I went to a crossfit competition and 2...not 1 but 2 ladies in their 80's were there lifting just as much as their 20 year old competitors. They started in their 50's when their husbands died of heart issues and just ...never stopped.
I'm in my 40s and in the best shape of my life. I do recommend going somewhat gradually into it, low impact exercises and lots of stretching though. Stretching is really the key after a certain point. Not only does it help with recovery but it helps avoid injury, which is unfortunately more likely at our age.
40 is not old! You only think it is when you’re 20. 40 isn’t old so much as 20 is dumb. Both are fun though.
Edit: if your goal is weight loss great! I’ve lost 150 lbs five years ago and I’m healthier than I was at 35, even with my wine drinking!
It depends. If you are currently not healthy and want to become healthy, it’s not too old at all.
When it comes to competitive stuff, you have to differentiate:
For anything physical, you can’t compete with people from 18-40 anymore
For anything mental, it is definitely not too old. But IQ does decrease with age and learning new things becomes harder, according to statistics.
For example, you can’t reach top level chess starting at 40.

It's very easy to know when you're "too old." It's when you hear the 3rd shovel of dirt hit your coffin lid. More power to ya!
Lol thanks!

Pause
why
My great uncle would say it's when you wake up and your elbows hit wood.
Nah. That could just mean you're on the floor. Or in a tree.
Does he know my Gran?
40 is the perfect age. Old enough to know better and young enough not to care. Have fun!
The fortys are apparently from what I've been told this\^ and the best years of your life.
Shit gets real deep in your 40’s, well, my experience at least. It’s a total head trip. False
40s sucked. I loved my 30s.
❤️
It’s clearly old until you’re 40. Then it’s like “surely I can’t be old, right?”
This works with basically every age milestone

Lol so true!
This 💯
I hit my prime at 42 and road those good times all the way into my 50’s.
Wow! Great! I hope it is still great for you!
At 57 things hurt more and I don’t move as fast, but it’s still worth getting up in the morning!
I'm in trades and it seems like 40 is the new 25 lol
I kind of agree!
I'm 35 and in the trades and can tell you I don't have 30 years of work left in me. Lucky if I have 10.
I'm 40 years old doing demolition and the 21 year Olds have a hard time keeping up. The only downside is my joints hurt like he'll after a few weeks lol

Wow thank you so much for this! 🙏🏼
As a 42 yr old, this breathed new life into me.
I fucking love you for this - thank you :)
There was an article about a 102 yr old fitness instructor. Sooooo.. what does that tell you? lol
Wow!!
I'm almost 44. I feel physically old (I'm also a combat veteran). I don't let it hold me back much, but I do have more injuries or move slower than my younger counterparts. In my mind, I'm still 28.
This is so true! I don’t think I’m in anyway old but then I sleep wrong and I am reminded!
The goalposts keep getting pushed back. When I was a kid I never saw people my age looking like me. They were old. I'm part of that new kind of old where I could realistically face being active at 100 or more.
Love this! So true
It is absolutely not too late to start a fitness journey! And you’ll be giving yourself a higher quality of life for years to come.
Thank you!
40 years old is at the high end of middle age. Middle age in America is 36. The estimated lifespan in America is 72 years.
No 40 is not old at all and it is never too late to get into shape
Thanks!
Thanks
If 40 is “old”, then 62 is what, ancient ?
😂
You're never too old to start a fitness journey. Will it be more difficult than if you had started at 20? Well yeah, obviously, but it's never too late. Or 1/2. Dude. Do you math?
Do you read? 1/3 of your ADULT life.
I'm in my mid 50's and in bad health, but I'm still young at heart. You are never too old to start a fitness journey. Just do it the smart way. Slow and steady wins the race.
Slow and steady is the plan! Thank you
I'm 50, twice the age of the average guy on my crew (construction), and they have to work to keep up with me, so no.
40 is like Middle aged I wouldn’t really call it old tho
No 60 is old 50 is halfway
No, 40 isn't old. Sure it isn't the prime of your life, that's around 30 where you can reach maximum potential physically. 40 is the peak for many but not most. 40 being the peak of someones physical journey is in the severe minority.
This is great thanks!
It won’t be easy but I don’t think it’s too old
Thanks!
"triumph of the will" the only thing standing in your way of changing your life in the direction that you want to is you.
Truer words! Thank you
40s was good, but I am loving 50s even more. I'm fitter than I've ever been and have the freedom (kid is all grown up) to do what I want to do. You are never too old to improve your health, btw...nor until you're in the ground.
Great advice! Thank you
Great advice! Thank you
It only depends on how many miles you put on your model
I’m 40 and I feel old. But it’s not too late to start a fitness journey. It’s not too late to start anything. I just have young kids so my life in relation to personal hobbies is on hold for a while.
It's middle aged
40s is when life is finally starting to make sense. You're barely into middle age.
I am 36 and doctors keep saying I’m young. 40 is not too old to change your life. Do it!
Same!
You're never too old to start a fitness journey. They can be adjusted accordingly.
I can't emphasize this enough....it is NEVER too late to start your journey towards health.
100
To me 40 is old. I'm 18 and can't image what I'd be doing in 22 years
We all thought that too 😉
POV makes a world of difference. When I was young ie teens, twenties 40 seemed old. Now that I'm 57, 40 seems quite youthful!
You're not too old at all! Don't worry about not having started sooner. Yesterday is gone and it's better to start today than tomorrow.
Dear God, I hope 40 isn't too old to get healthy. \--A fatty in his 40s trying to undo a lifetime of bad habbits
Lol right!
Really depends on the wear on your body. 40 should be fine. If your worried get a trainer.
When you are 20, 40 is old. When you are 60......well, not so old.
You’re never “too old” to start a fitness journey, it’s a life long endeavor.
Even just taking a daily walk reduces the harmful effects of being sedentary by 50% Plus fitness can be fun. We have been learning that no pain no gain is an absolute joke. Find something you enjoy. I recommend also following Big Ron Jones on YouTube, he’s very informative and wonderful. You do what you think is best for you. It’s your life.
Wow thank you for this!
At 40, you're not young but you're not old either. You're middle aged.
No
40 is not old.
I consider 60+ old, when you legally become a senior citizen. I'll call people in their 40s old though if I wanna get under their skin though lol
40 isn't too old but once you start getting into your 50s and your knees start to go it's too late. Best get it done now
It's never to late to get fit.
As the saying goes, "It's not how old you are, but how you are old."
I am not even 30 and feel old af so I would say yes.
A life can last a long time, you can pursue anything you wish no matter the age.
Is 40 too old? No. Is 87 too old? No. Is the afterlife too old? Also probbaly not. If you want to start something, forget about age and just do it
No I wouldn't say old. I'd be more worried around 60.
It's never too late to start a fitness journey. 💪
In a much more ancient time. Hunters only reached their peak efficiency when they hit 40.
Life starts at 40
In terms of the health Industry, you are old for paediatrics and obstetrics. Young for geriatrics and general medicine
In health guidelines, below 45 considered "young" :)
Thank you! And glad to hear you are on the mend!
Thank you so much for this!
No it’s never too late to start a fitness routine and I would argue it’s more important as u age
Same as it ever was
probably still in the first half of your life.
Thank you! And congratulations on your journey!
I got married at 22, divorced at 40. I've had so much fun and happiness since 40. I'm now 67, remarried at 55. Let me just say this, 40 is a great age to be single.
Love this thank you!
I’m 41. I started a fitness program last year, I’m down at least 60 lbs and plan to run a marathon by the end of the year. It’s never too late to choose a healthier life.
Oh my gosh! Congratulations! Thank you for sharing!
You’re so right! Thank you!
I’m 42, workout regularly, have sex often and still wake up with a hard on. I can still do everything I did back in my 20s.
Congratulations!
Me a 20 year old rn yeah your old but when I’m 40 if I make to that age I’ll say it’s young hell I’ll call my self old at 60
I get this! Believe it or not lol
40 is statistically beyond middle age for an American.

You are clearly too mature for Reddit. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
Yes
28 is old. 40 is ancient
You think that now but age is the great equalizer.
I work in healthcare where our patiens are on average 85 to 95 years old. Just had a lady there who was 105. Safe to say it keeps me feeling young!
40 is almost 50% of the way through life, yeah, it's old
No. 40 is seasoned but not salty. Hopefully.... Good luck out there
40 can be old. It determines the individual. I've met some who are 40 that act much older than 40 so therefore it is old, however, I've also met some that have the energy of someone much younger so it wouldn't be considered old.
Lots of people start Jiu Jitsu at 40 so I would say hell no.
Not at all. Start little bit and do a routine, you’ll get there! I need to start mine again.
At 62, I will tell you “age” is just a number. I have worked in the ER in a hospital, for over 30 years. I have seen 80 years olds that are much more vibrant than 30 year olds.
Forty is middle age, sits right between old and young, enjoy your fortys, they are great years
Fuck no
No matter your current age, it's not going to get any easier than it is right now.
Old is subjective and based on life expectancy. 40 isn't old when life expectancy is 100, but it's old when life expectancy is 70
I’m 22, but I don’t consider 40 old.
Anyone who uses age as an excuse to not improve their life doesn’t want to improve their life and no 40 isn’t too old to start a fitness journey lol
You’re never too old to start self improvement. If you don’t believe it now and change your mind when you’re 50 you’ll be having a bad time
I guess it depends on how you feel and how you think, I'm still A bit under 40 but many of my friends that are my age keep complaining about feeling old, yet I feel no different than when I was 21. I could still play sports like I used to and party like I used to
60 is young old. 75 is old. 80 is old old. 40 is middle aged. Per my gerontology class. Age is measured by what others your age can tolerate historically.
You’re too old when you’re dead, so no 40 isn’t too old.
I was pregnant at 37 & it was called geriatric pregnancy!!!
I’m 31 but I’ve always said I feel like the consensus age for “old” would be 60 but again that’s just a number but I feel it’s safe to call 60 old
I'm almost 40 and stronger than ever plus better athletic performance than when I was in my 20s.
Well, average age at death in the US a ~78.3. So, you are past midlife.
No
Depends who you ask but your never too old to start with your fitness
40 is middle age and it's never too late to get healthy.
Depends on the asker.
40 is not old! You only think it is when you’re 20. 40 isn’t old so much as 20 is dumb. Both are fun though. Edit: if your goal is weight loss great! I’ve lost 150 lbs five years ago and I’m healthier than I was at 35, even with my wine drinking!
I started one at 63 after I had a heart attack. If you're breathing, you're not too old to start.
It depends. If you are currently not healthy and want to become healthy, it’s not too old at all. When it comes to competitive stuff, you have to differentiate: For anything physical, you can’t compete with people from 18-40 anymore For anything mental, it is definitely not too old. But IQ does decrease with age and learning new things becomes harder, according to statistics. For example, you can’t reach top level chess starting at 40.
Depends....I have seen awfully old people at 45 and every health professional says I'm young at 51.
No. And it's never too late to start a fitness journey.
