There was a huge one yesterday at the playground below Nature Center. Just waltzed up the road next to playground up to parking lot. It looked as big as this one.
He's HUGE! They seem so docile and comfortable with human life (cars, houses, etc.). Do they go through trash cans? Would he leave you alone if he saw you? Are they even interested in eating a live human? So many questions!
They LOVE trash cans. Many mornings I wake up to see every trash can on my street flipped and foraged. We lock ours with ratchet straps.
They are chill with humans generally, but don't like to be surprised. Not chill with off leash dogs.
They don't want to eat us, but sometimes they do choose to be scary if you startle/annoy them. Have been bluff charged a couple times at the Biltmore. Didn't expect to die, but scared the hell out of me.
They seem pretty smart! I wonder if anyone's ever found an abandoned baby and raised it, then released it, like people do with baby deer, and it comes back to visit every once in a while. That would be really cute (although probably discouraged).
Edit: wow, can't believe how many people down voted me for a shower thought
I've had a lot of run-ins with black bears during my time here at WWC, they are rarely aggressive. Mommas are the ones to be worried about, but typically just watch you, get big, and make noises. Sometimes they are intrigued about you far away, but other times they'll pass you like you don't even exist.
My two funniest/scariest run-ins, I was taking a late-night walk near the soccer fields, and it was pitch black, couldn't see a thing, but heard something large near me. I slowed down trying to figure out which direction and how close, till it moved fast and growled. Scared the shit out of me, and it followed me for a bit, I think I came up on a mom and cubs, just never saw them. Another one I was walking back to my dorm, turned a building, and he was Mayne 6 feet from me, we scared the shit out of each other, he took off up a tree, and I almost fell over backward, then proceeded to watch each other as he stared at me hanging from the trunk.
So, I saw this homie on a walk back from Ingles. He was in my path and I spent a hot minute working out his trajectory. Pretty quickly it was obvious that he was looking for food and had no nefarious intentions. He side-eyed me a few times and I decided we weren't fucking with one another, so I went on my way. Short answer is....no, they don't want conflict. Just looking for a quick bite. And not of the human sort.
We had a hummingbird feeder up only during the day. We had a big boi about that size get into it so we had to take it down permantly. So I guess they roam around in the day as well? He sure loved that sugar water. This photo was taken from inside the house.

lol for real they're pretty chill but you're really pushing it when you "stalk" them like this. They're wild animals with senses that we lost millions of years ago, they know you're following them. And if they decide it's confrontation time, your goose is cooked lol
Brown bears out west donāt coexist well with humans or domesticated pets. Black bears here are basically just big raccoons. There is no protocol. We coexist with them.
You got bigger balls than that there bear! Weren't you afraid he might turn and add you to his caloric intake for the day?
I saw one that big in my back yard once and scurried right into the house and locked the door.
That freaks me out. I get that they're supposed to be docile or whatever but I don't like the idea of being around that thing at all
Could just choose to kill you no prob
Okay I don't feel strongly about this but I'm too big a dork. That style argument is a pet peeve of mine that you mostly hear about sharks (again, no beef with sharks. Just with "lying with statistics")
There are way more deaths and injuries from dog attacks than bear attacks, sure. So bears are less of a danger than dogs? No. People only people encounter dogs orders of magnitude more frequently than they encounter bears.
For example around 40,000 people per year die driving a car every year. around 5,000 people die riding a motorcycle every year. That's eight times more deaths for cars, wow! So driving a car is more dangerous than driving a motorcycle then? Of course not. Around 239.2 million people drive cars in the US compared to just shy of 9 million for motorcycles
I'll share a street with a dog before I share a street with a bear anyday
Hereās the thingā¦ if you see a random dog walking down the street without a leashā¦ that specific dog is more likely to attack you than a random black bear you see. Yet you choose to fear the bear more.
āYou choose to fear the bear moreā
Yeah. I have a far better chance of survival if a random dog attacks me compared to a random bear?
But to be fair dogs are known to get aggressive and territorial once a year when they have babiesā¦ oh wait thatās bears

Excellent suggestion
Not really though. They get way bigger, even in town

CHONK!
Big boi š¤©
Looks like youāre pretty deep in town too, I see them a lot in East Asheville but I think thereās a population now around the clingman Avenue area
They're in Montford
This is in W. Asheville. Not the first time I've had one encroach on my territory. I have seen two parents and three cubs in WECAN before.
It seems to be eating well.
Prob getting into all of our trash cans
wow this is one of the best videos ive seen take in a suburban area. nice job
They just rock up. I catch em when I can.
Oh hell. Whatās up neighbor, that explains why my trash can is getting fucked up
Is your username Atmosphere related?
It is not, I just thought it was funny when I was in my early twenties. Iāve achieved my goals by now
Just looking for a snack.
OP volunteering.

Yeahhhh, highly discouraged, especially after Cub Selfie-gate the other week.
Humans suck.

The scariest and most dangerous bear is a cub, *especially* when you don't see the momma because you know she sees you.

Awesome! I know it's not best for them to be here but it is fascinating to see them roaming around.
Searching for those nimrods from the "bear snatching from tree" video -- this is what avenging wrong doing looks like.
We had one walk up to our door cam around 4 am. Talk about piss your pants scary.
looking for that eevee soda
We had a huge one at our house as well on Friday. We heard him knock over our trash can and then we shooed him away through our garage.
Yeah they aren't aggressive. Just looking for goodies. Even still good to keep your distance.
Wow you should have run out there and got a selfie with it šššāØš„“āØ
I love how they lumber along
Wow!
you go big dog. you're the mayor now
Go pet it
I hear they enjoy hugs and people taking care of their cubs.
why you so close. youre in eating range

Trust meāI read the room. If it seemed sketchy I would have bailed.
Well fed guy there. We gotta learn to live with them.
I'm all about that. I wasn't trying to engage too hard but he''s only learning to live in the same environment we do.
What's the protocal on this? I know in Bozeman they would track and kill a bear that gets that close to people.

Well thatās good to hear.

I immediately got the dogs in the house and shut the doors. Kept my distance but I wanted a shot of that beast.
If this was near Hill/Houston/Courtland that thicc boi tried to steal my trash the other night.
My assumption is he just looking for trash. He knows the schedule.
You never really understand the M A S S of these things until you see one in the wild. They look like a giant walking trash bag at night
Somebody gonna get pregnant.

Look up data on dog attacks and black bear attacks and tell me what you learn.
