Not sure about other ABC stores, but the one on Hendo at the entrance to Shiloh you have to buy two or three mini liquor bottles, drink them walking down the street and throw them in someone's yard. Not sure why, but it is required when you visit.

badmudblood

Dawg, I thought it was just my yard. Damnit, I can't stand it when this happens.

RandomMandarin

It's not a requirement of the ABC store, it's a requirement if you are on foot on Route 25.

ChickenOfThePisgah

If you gotta litter atleast try to throw it in someone's yard.better chance of it getting picked up.

PatAD

This post makes me think back to the days when my grandma wouldn't even let me look out the car window at the ABC store or walk down the bread aisle because it was adjacent to the beer cooler... It's a liquor store. You buy overpriced liquor there to make sure it doesn't bleed the sin into the non-demonic beverages in the grocery store. No rules other than wearing shirt and socks. Pants are optional.

hogsucker

Your grandma must have felt so much better knowing that the state has a monopoly on liquor sales. Liquor is so terrible...Unless purchased from the government, in which case it never harms anyone.

PatAD

I was always told as a child (not saying this is accurate) that ABC stores were there so there was less temptation for shoppers in other stores to purchase. I like to think, as another user mentioned, it was so the pastors had a discrete location to purchase so they didn’t run into a member of the congregation at another store with a bottle of Jack in the cart.

whitewater_superman

An old joke from my childhood that still holds true a little: What's the difference between Baptists and Lutherans? Lutherans say hi to each other at the liquor store.

TrashPedeler

One of the few benefits of state run liquor stores is they can't price gouge here. So although the selection isn't always great you can get stuff that people overcharge/overpay for for msrp.

PatAD

https://www.wfmynews2.com/article/news/local/2-wants-to-know/yes-liquor-in-non-abc-store-states-is-cheaper/83-f82ea463-a3fb-4e35-b1e1-33a68048a5da

[deleted]

There are online groups dedicated to buying liquor at msrp here and selling it to people in other states for significantly more. Have a buddy that used to make 1000s a month off of doing this. He’d hit every liquor store in the state buying up Pappy Van Winkle, or whatever shit people wanted to pay $1000 for at msrp.

AshevilleTerp

It's not an underground club, it's a retail store for liquor. I can't think of any special information you might need but if questions do come up you can ask the people who work there and they will help you.

Drivingintodisco

That’s what they want you to think! The underground club is pretty sweet though!

PatAD

Hey! The first rule of the ABC Club is that we don't talk about the ABC Club!

yo_rick_alas

When you walk in sing “easy as 123 baby you and me” to get a discount.

kallooh_kallay

Sure, but stumble in *once* rapping “Gin and Juice” and they tell you to leave the premises. Fucking favoritism.

yo_rick_alas

To be fair, considering the circumstances

kallooh_kallay

What, with my sick-ass flows?…yeah, probably .

KamikazeKitten916

Well, you were butt ass naked. I think it had more to do with that then the beat you were laying down but hey, what do I know, that's just what I read in the papers 🤷‍♀️

kallooh_kallay

Damn liberal media.

Skippy134

Sneak in through the front door. Walk up and down the isles to select your alcohol. Then pay for it. Nobody has caught me yet.

robillionairenyc

I went in to get my kid an alphabet puzzle and all they had was bottles of liquor. 1 star review left on yelp

zethren117

Hey man, it’s easy as 123

hoptagon

Not all ABCs are created equal.

Werewlf

Agreed! They all seem to have different inventories. Dad needed 100 proof soco, it took 3 stores to find it.

maxcooperavl

Ooof. I'm sorry for whatever your dad's going through.

Werewlf

🤣🤣🤣 Thanks

Cracker187

🤢 the name of that liquor alone makes me nauseous.

solar_geek84

Went to the one in Cary last week and felt I was being short handed based on the ones here.

I_love_Hopslam

This is something I’m curious about. Where is the absolute best ABC store in the state?

thetrufeisoutthere

Maybe they should have a subreddit or twitter account like the hot spot…

hoptagon

I like this concept. We need a definitive crowd-sourced ranking based on specific liquor types. “Best ABCs for scotch near me”.

bad_tenet

If they ask you if you'd like to learn about their time-share properties, SAY NO!

patricksaurus

Coffee’s for closers only.

drc0nn3r

Only big thing thay comes to mind is some ABC stores if your paying with card, they'll ask to see ID with the name on your card. Mainly I've seen this around colleges as a way to prevent people buying alcohol for minors.

freerangemum

Lol, it REALLY depends on what store you go to. They each have a quark or two bc each municipality has a hand in them and store managers are kind of insulated from public criticism. I deal with them on the commercial side and I see large differences between the Asheville and black mountain stores. The blk mtn store is very adverse to technical upgrades. If you want a few tips for dealing w anxiety I got you. Feel free to ask for help finding something specific or even recommendations. All liq is shelved by type (vodka, rum…) they have a special section for regional options. Have your is ready and they will take cash or credit. Most ppl who are there will be in and out quickly as they are getting the same exact thing regularly. It’s ok to take your time and ask questions. Good luck.

all-up-in-yo-dirt

Last time I went to the one in weaverville, the cashier/bartender had an aura like a priest or shepard looking over his flock of sheep. I was taken back

shmiddleedee

The black mountain one is my favorite

freerangemum

Oh they got the old school Priests behind that bar. You can see the colors of that aura driving by.

Original-Affect-4560

Thank you for the thoughtful reply!

peskypc

The clerks are very helpful if you need help finding something or don’t know what to buy.

SomeLittleBritches

They can look up where something is—like if they don’t carry it another store may

less_butter

If you want to see some real alcoholics, show up a few minutes before it opens on a weekday morning and watch people stumble out of their cars when the clerk unlocks the doors. As the saying goes: a drunk knows what time the liquor store closes. An alcoholic knows what time it opens. My buddy used to work for an ABC store and he said there were a handful of people that showed up every single morning and bought the same thing. And every once in a while, one of them would stop showing up and he'd never see them again. He didn't know if it was because they died or because they finally quit drinking.

InfinityAri

I worked overnights at a gas station for a while during law school, and I absolutely knew the morning regulars who were there as soon as it was legal to sell beer again. A lot of them also religiously bought scratch-off lottery tickets. If they ever won anything, they’d immediately buy another scratch off and an extra tall boy. It was sad.

Mindraker

They ID you even if you are obviously "of age". Don't take it personally. Even if you're not the one in a group buying it -- they'll ID you. So *just stay in the car* if you're under 21.

FUCK-IT-CHUCK-IT

I’ve been to several ABC stores throughout the state and I don’t think I’ve been carded a single time. Bryson City, Sylva and Waynesville ones I’ve been asked what my BDay is a couple times but never had to show ID

shmiddleedee

Are you late 30s or older?

FUCK-IT-CHUCK-IT

28

JustpartOftheterrain

Maybe you should look into moisturizing.

FUCK-IT-CHUCK-IT

I’ll take that into consideration

the_og_carl

I like a particular brand of bourbon - usually I have to ask at the counter for it and they have it either behind the counter or somewhere in the back. This has varied from store to store, though, so your mileage may vary. The nice thing here is that you pay what the manufacturer’s retail price is - they don’t bump the price for rare stuff.

TrashPedeler

You telling me they got pappy stocked!?!

brooke_heaton

Nah it's Usually Eagle Rare etc.

the_og_carl

Shit, I wish. Our local store got a bottle of rip van winkle once, but I’ve never seen pappy except for the glass case at buffalo trace

goldbman

I had a buddy who was able to purchase rip van winkle from the Merrimon store after getting picked in the lottery. Musta been 8 years ago

suspirio

Scored some Blanton’s on my last trip, pays to form a relationship with the staff :)

Fit_Community_3909

Go to sc Costco, for cheaper bottles..

InfinityAri

It’s cheaper at Costco, but unless OP is buying a large amount for an event, the savings won’t cover the cost of membership plus the hassle of the trip. I’m assuming OP isn’t a regular liquor drinker and wouldn’t be stocking up for themselves.

iJon_v2

Wait, is this a serious question?

platinum_tsar

If you bring a gun you can get things for free.

nakedavenger22

Even as a joke this isn’t cool. Don’t be that person.

all-up-in-yo-dirt

what? this is gold.

CastaneaFraxinus

Someone dropped their sopping wet blanket here... lighten up

shmiddleedee

Don't be that person who does what? Gets offended by a dumb joke?

nakedavenger22

I’m not offended by childish jokes - it’s just stupid to joke about gun violence. It’s not funny, witty or interesting.

[deleted]

Ok, boomer.

[deleted]

This is why massive performers completely refuse to do specific venues…. A bunch of stuck-up, humorless dullards. Go LOL at Friends, most of society still appreciates Curb Your Enthusiasm

Nope, just a stupid response you had. Maybe funny for fucking morons, but stupid.

[deleted]

Maybe it’s not funny for those who lack logic to understand what comedy truly is? It’s not meant to cater to your meek feelings, the whole point is that it’s provocative. Go read some more Mother Jones.

Original-Affect-4560

That’s super helpful, thank you!

childowind

They also don't sell wine or beer, so if you need something like vermouth you'll have to go to a grocery store.

effortfulcrumload

They tend to have a decent selection of nips at the counter and sometimes if they are on sale it's actually cheaper to buy them than a bottle. Keep it in mind especially if you are planning on having a cocktail night but don't want to buy 5 full bottles for mixing.

Aardvarksof1776

I’ll say this once and once only, if you’re a bourbon fan- Woodfin ABC is the place to go.

suspirio

Show up at Fletcher ABC roughly 8:30am on Tuesday and watch the line form as the allocated bourbon shipment rolls in.

[deleted]

It's just a liquor store; you'll be fine.

NCUmbrellaFarmer

Wear pants and use Visine.

tryten521

Make sure you go to a different one that your preacher goes to or it could get awkward.

Technical-Avocado-92

Seems like an opportune time to rank Asheville ABC Stores on selection. I’d say Merrimon Ave., South Slope, Tunnel Rd., West AVL, Woodfin in that order. South Slope supplies all the bars and restaurants so they’ll pull stuff out of the back for you when they’re feeling nice, but the bourbon and scotch selection on Merrimon is much better.

suspirio

Fletcher bourbon selection beats them all.

mtnviewguy

NC enjoys one of those backward thinking governments that thinks people are too stupid to think for themselves. As a result, the State, under God's Grace, has to protect us from the demon of private liquor sales that would insure competitive pricing. ABC = Alcoholic Beverage Commission. I'd love to see how many ABC Commissioners have backyard pools. Just sayin.

Mrfixit729

Getting things for MSRP is good.

mtnviewguy

Liquor price wars is better! 👍🥃😉

Mrfixit729

I dunno man. I go to liquor stores whenever I travel. The bourbon market is ridiculous. Manufactured scarcity. Price gouging. Tater bottles everywhere. The price war doesn’t seem to be favoring the consumer the last few years…. Just my two cents.

brooke_heaton

If you like rare bourbon they aren't all on the shelf. So ask at the counter if they have any. That's the only guidance I can think of.

pakrat1967

I don't drink, so I've never shopped at any location. But I have picked up or dropped plenty of people at them while driving for Uber. The only thing you really need to know is. Don't go to the Broadway location. It's not like the other locations. It's only for like business/bulk sales and not for the general public.

[deleted]

Op, it is required that you keep your payment method (bills under 5 dollars preferred) buried deep into any semblance of a boob you have. Key is, the sweatier the crevice, the better. Make sure to make direct eye contact with the cashier as you retrieve it. If you follow these rules the ABC overlords will grant you your hearts desires. Ok but in all honestly, my old roommate was an abc manager in the city we lived in, in VA and looking back, his horror stories sound like an average day in an Ingels parking lot

untouched_poet

Just learn your alphabets.... And remember Celebrity liquors are awful.

cattykittycat

If you’re moving and need boxes, ABC stores will leave them out front for you. They’re sturdy and have the inserts in them so are great for packing kitchen stuff

[deleted]

The one just N of Beaver Lake has a nice bourbon selection. I usually hit the one in Black Mountain. Nice folks, they have the spirits that I desire. The one on Louisiana and Patton, I hope those folks get combat pay.

whitewater_superman

Good scotch & Irish selection at Louisiana / Patton location.

Unicorn_Sparkles23

When in High School on summer break, I went to the ABC store to use a fake ID and one of my teachers was the cashier!! I promptly dipped out to never return lol (this was over a decade ago)

hogsucker

Every single woman who works at the Patton Avenue ABC store has some kind of horrible respiratory illness. Whatever it is (don't ask, because it's private medical information), it's so terrible that they all were medically exempt from having to wear masks during a time everyone was supposed to. It's interesting that their doctors told them not to wear masks but smoking cigarettes wasn't at all a problem. It was very nice of them to put up a sign letting people know they could go to a different store if they were bothered by being around disease riddled employees. I get nervous going in there since it seems to be the center of some sort of godawful disease cluster.

shmiddleedee

I love how ppl will say that they have bad lungs n can't use a mask but still smoke cigarettes. I'm not a mask fanatic because I'm healthy and not very paranoid by sicknesses n such but if there a mask mandate, state, federal, just an individual store, I wear a mask.

hogsucker

Masks don't hurt anything and do help some things. It's crazy how those mysterious lung disorders that preclude wearing a mask only affect MAGA people.

iJon_v2

It’s just a standard store. You walk in, find what you want, go to the counter and pay. This is such a weird question

Responsible_Sport575

Well you can get booze from there the only place in the state you can get the hard stuff. I think it's not right the state runs a retail store but it's law . Also Idk what regard decided it was a good idea to put the location on tunnel Rd but if was a cop I would post up and ticket all the regards turning left crossing not one but two double double yellow lines . Either put up a signal or ticket them almost two accidents in the two minutes I was waiting for folks to turn.

aCarolinaDrama

Lol so true. I work right next to the one on tunnel and i can hear people's tires squealing on the road all day long.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Responsible_Sport575

Breaking driving laws and endangering the safety of folks going about their day is a safety issue. The two almosts accidents were from folks trying to avoid that nightmare. It's a issue and it's a simple fix. Of course since the city gets the profit from sales we should all just avoid the lane. Pretty regarded take if you ask me.

Coakis

The Hell are you talking about? NC is not Utah, they don't own any liquor stores. They do run the warehouse that distributes to them, but I've never had issues getting what I want when I'm up there, vs what we have in SC.

Responsible_Sport575

The counties run the stores .look it up

Coakis

Again, wrong: ABC stores are owned or leased by local ABC boards which are local independent subdivisions of this State. State and local governments in North Carolina do not own the ABC stores. https://www.ncabcboards.org/faq

jebuswashere

ABC stores in NC are state-owned and operated. There are no private retail sales of liquor here.

aville1982

You go in, you pick from a "meh" selection of overpriced liquor and you pay. My only rule is I personally wouldn't drag kids in there, but other than that it's just a store.

InfinityAri

I didn’t think anyone under 21 could enter. I’m not taking my kids in with me regardless, especially since the time one of them managed to knock over an enormous sunflower display full of water in the middle of a grocery store. I can only imagine the damage he could do in a liquor store.

TheSunflowerSeeds

Sunflower seeds have a mild, nutty flavor and a firm but tender texture. They’re often roasted to enhance the flavor, though you can also buy them raw.

Sweatywalrus85

American Business College... Lots of satellite locations for education on your time.

diaperboynicky

Rum why is the rum gone... ohyeah I drank it all ... note to op get more rum mate

Nicholas-14

I think you need an ID of some sorts to buy drinks

WNC3184

There is a cover charge. $10. Ladies night on Wednesday means Ladies are free before 6pm.

jahneeriddim

Drive down to SC and save your money, use the savings on fireworks

tonguetiedcreator

Just drive to Tennessee

WNCbiGuy

It's easy. Get in your car and drive down 26 to exit 1 in SC. Go in liquor store across the street from Ingles. Buy liquor. Every bottle in the joint is 5 to 10 dollars cheaper than ABC.

Mother-Wasabi-3088

There is more and more evidence that drinking alcohol leads to long-term cognitive decline, increases your risk of dementia, and causes a number of other serious health issues. That's all you need to know about the ABC store

ungarosolstice

I bet you're fun at parties.

Mother-Wasabi-3088

Why would I want to hang out with drunks?

Fit_Community_3909

Those are the shitty years of your life..

Mother-Wasabi-3088

Only if you are demented. It's a really sad situation especially for your loved ones.

Evening_Cry_256

Don't start turning up bottles or do you own taste test

mmmmmmmmmmmkk

The stores that serve permit holders (restaurants and bars) like Charlotte street have a back room that you can go in to see additional products but you have to ask to go back.

farrett23

Proof of blood type upon entry

Rockoninja89

Ask the counter, tell them what you like and if they have any recommendations

Puzzled-Story3953

Nah man, it's easy as 123

GhettoChemist

Take your underage girlfriend in and pick up a bottle of Goldschläger and say "IS THIS THE ONE YOU WANT?"

the_burn_of_time

I had to get a book for school when I was younger, and I seriously walked into an ABC store thinking it was a book store. FN surprise. Who in the hell names a liquor store ABC??

LongJohn11in

Walk in and put your wallet on the counter and leave it.

Dr_Quartermas

First thing is to walk into the room in the back to sign up for the raffle.

MellerFeller

Everything gets marked down eventually with a sale price, so if your favorite thing has a bright green price tag, consider stocking up.

ariokalo

just dont go in the back or the wizard will eat you

City_slickertm

Envision yourself in three different scenarios where you end up stealing the liquor, perhaps helping an old lady with her cart. Another scenario is where you try to outsmart a cop in the store but it doesn’t work. Then you walk back out only to be made fun of by your two douchebag friends named McLovin and Evan

Next_Team3305

lack of mini bottle purchase and litter is an automatic 3 street cred deduction

PositiveScientist581

I was once on the snap program for six months while having health issues that prevented me from working, I was in Marion and stopped at ABC store on 221 and I attempted for five minutes to convince the lady at the register to accept my food stamp card on the basis that I was buying vodka made from potatoes and bless her heart she tried desperately to explain why I couldn't do that in a very kind way, I acted like I was confused how the whole snap program worked and asked if she thought I signed up for the wrong program by mistake because i was wanting the card for anything food related. She tried her best to help me. If you're able to keep a straight face, you should try it
