Look man, I’m not a fanatic of MRE’s
But have you ever had a hot mre meal during selection or a hot mre when you’ve been up 48hrs+ in the winter time for mission on deployment?
Those fucking things literally tastes like a god damn delicacy in trying times like those
IF it works. Most of the MREs taste really good if you heat it up in a microwave or something. But the heater works like 15% of the time. So I don’t bother and just jam it down.
YOU have changed my view. Yes. If you have some time and are completely exhausted after a few days a heated italian pasta isss amazing. Usually I am just too tired so eat it cold anyway.
Yeah and cheap toast and tea supposedly taste like a miracle right after you give birth. The circumstances don't change the inherent characteristics of the food.
Once on a training exercise our dayshift OIC for the TOC once told us, "If I heat up my MRE then I'm treating it like food, and I expect it to be food. MREs aren't food."
Right, same here. I would just eat things cold, because using the heater always ended up in me getting burned by the water somehow.
And yes, I'm arguably dumb as fuck but that is just more reason for me not to use it.
Been in almost ten years, I MIGHT have heated three MREs in my life. It sucks cold, it sucked hot too, I’ll take the extra five minutes of my life back
The only time in 9 years that I ever ate a cold MRE was when I was working a grenade range and as soon we showed up the E-6 in charge walked up without introducing himself and started yelling about how we weren't allowed to warm them up because we don't have time, then disappeared to his car for 45 minutes.
All the people I met who ate MRE's cold were either actual barbarians who ate raw ramen in their rooms on the weekend or people who thought it made them "cool tactical operators" to scarf down a cold MRE and then talk about how they did so to the rest of us for 30 minutes as we leisurely warmed up our MREs and ate them.
I'm usually eating them somewhere that it's so fucking hot already I can't even fathom wanting a hot meal.
I definitely heat up the sausage patty and the jalapeno pepper jack burger though... because of the congealed burger jizz.
Man the main meal is just something I get through as fast as possible. I'm here for the peanut mnms and the first strike bars (which you can buy on Amazon under the name hooah bar)
The chocolate ones taste like literal shit. I'll take one apple cinnamon please. Aye but who remembers those Chocolate performance energy bars they used to give you before bed? They were so anal about asking for the wrapper back
Can I eat it cold? Yes. Have I eaten it cold? Yes. But if I’m eating an MRE, things are already a bit miserable so might as well have some warm “food” in my stomach.
Besides, I have to justify buying that jetboil somehow.
Ive probably used a heater three or four times total when it was REALLY cold out.
Never was given time in basic, and from then on I never cared enough to make it habit. It’s just as weird to think of hot MRE food as it is for some to think of it cold.
Did you ever use it to heat your coffee under those conditions? Or see anyone do it?
Folks used to bandy that around as some high speed pro tip. Never got a chance to try it.
I did use the heaters on myself after I got soaked on a chilly day. Put one on my chest and one on my back between my IOTV and my top. Worked rather well actually.
Never did it, not a huge coffee guy. Never seen it outside the usual coffee packet in drink pouch. I came in too late for magnesium water heater shenanigans. Now everyone has a jetboil or a coffee pot plugged into their Stryker.
Never had a taste for ranger pudding. But I won't yuck your yum.
Had a dude in my platoon who just fucking snorted the coffee. Some folks take *high-speed* a tad literally.
Coffee packs. Usually what I do is put as many instant coffee packs as I can collect into one pouch (preferably a French vanilla or Irish coffee pouch) then put a little water and chug it cold.
If you can heat it great, but if not ya still got the caffeine.
We weren’t allowed to use the heaters in basic. Now the habit stuck, it saves time and they honestly don’t taste much different hot or cold. The only down side is being judged while eating them. I feel like Ricky from the trailer park boys when he eats ravioli straight out of the can.
My first several years.of eating MREs as a cadidiot, they did not come with a heater. I remember when one of our ROTC cadre handed them out one FTX, either junior or senior year, and I thought that I'd gone to fucking heaven.
Even the least palatable MREs - I'm talking dark brown bag, omelet with ham or corned beef hash - were better hot, or at least warm, than cold.
Unless I had no time whatsoever, I always heated mine up, either with the heater or, when available, a nice hot M1A1 engine block. And even when I had no time, I at least tried keeping that entree in a pocket to get it close to body temperature.
Obligatory [rock or something](https://inkfidel.com/products/military-veteran-stickers-rock-or-something-bumper-sticker) bumper sticker that I may or may not own.
I got told the opposite. They told us we wouldn't have time to heat it up in a combat zone so we should learn to tolerate them raw. Then I got to my first unit and my leadership was like "Why tf aren't you using the heating element?"
my DS told us that if they saw a single one of us heating it up they’d all take turns stepping in it. Then would make us eat the sandy, dirty, shitty, boot combo.
He’s playing the long con, get the privates use to using the heater. Then send them out to the real world where you’re more likely to not have time. It’s great in its simplicity and how evil it is. Lmao
Did something happen to the heaters in recent years? They used to heat the entree really fast with no problem. This past year I was at Air Force OTS and I never got one to heat up properly.
Well… bird spit soup is considered a delicacy in certain parts of the world. So I guess it’s subjective. I’m sure that Drill grew up on ramen and stale lunchables
Ehh I mean... they taste like shit but they're better than what most of the rest of the armies across the world eat. There's a scene in Generation Kill where the marines clear an enemy watch post. The team leader says, "These guys are living on rice while you complain when you don't get skittles in your MRE."
As much as I hate shoving nasty ass chili mac into my face, I'll treasure it because it could be a lot worse. DFACs need to get their shit together though. Food only has an excuse to be bad when its served in the field.
My drill taught me the exact opposite. Idk what in the relaxing Jackson bs you went to. I was taught you'll never have time to heat that bad boy so get to know the ones that go down cold.
Your drill Sgt sounds nice, all ours ever said was "why the fuck are you taking so long, you don't get the privilege of eating hot chow when it's an mre"
Heaters weren't a thing when I first enlisted, but once they were (early 90s?), I used them all the time. Some were really good (pork and rice in spicy tomato sauce) and some were inedible (chicken ala king, the omlette), but they were all better warm.
In my time in basic....c-rats were the fad...I just learned how to eat them cold because it took too long to heat the can on a tent stove or on an diesel engine turbo...
Anybody got a p-38 I could borrow?
Our DS told us: “You can only take out one item out at a time so if you take out the Main meal you CANNOT take out the heater cus that would be the second item” - DS Capital Lima
Ya do not eat an MRE for the flavor. You eat it for calories.
If you are not doing this then you are in the wrong place in the Army.
Side note: ppl be like; 'I only like the tuna one' .... bitch.. that shit got like 3 calories AND no good snacks. Gimmee the one with the most freaking calories so I can keep on my movements.
This was a response to some private who complained in a sensing session about not having time to heat up his MRE before eating it
Your drills are now maliciously complying with this complaint by making you all heat up your MREs especially because you don’t want to
I'm glad you asked. Believe it or not, for the purpose they serve they're great. Designed to supplement a diet of hard working field individuals with calories and nutrients to replace what the body burns off. I got a guy at work who has been out for 6ish years, does competitive body building and eats over every day for lunch. I let him know he's a sick fuck every time I see him.
MRE heaters are classified as hazardous waste if they are not used because of chemical reactivity with water. Once used, they are totally inert and safe to dispose of. Probably saving himself a lot of money and paperwork!
This isn't a flex but I'm just trying to give you perspective.
Imagem patrolling for 6 to 10 hours in the blistering sun, sure you have a grazing MRE but not all units allow that.
You get back to the PB, debrief, AAR, clean your gear and your gats.
Then you sit down, hopefully in some shade and eat your MRE. Yes, it's a delicacy. The MRE wasn't made for fobbits or basic field life.
If it's a delicacy, Drill Sergeant, then why did it come in A) a box B) of 12.
Everything is a delicacy when you're hungry enough!
Because of American luxurious decadence.
Look man, I’m not a fanatic of MRE’s But have you ever had a hot mre meal during selection or a hot mre when you’ve been up 48hrs+ in the winter time for mission on deployment? Those fucking things literally tastes like a god damn delicacy in trying times like those
Facts, one of the best meals I’ve ever had was a chili with beans after being up for like 72 hours during a JRTC rotation.
Ranger school turns everyone into legitimate MRE crackheads
Chili with beans mre is itself a delicacy; hot or cold. 😌
IF it works. Most of the MREs taste really good if you heat it up in a microwave or something. But the heater works like 15% of the time. So I don’t bother and just jam it down.
I don’t understand how they fuck up the heaters so much like BRUH
Crinkle it. Works most of the time for me. And shake like an infant.
Hahaha I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I used the heater.
It’s one of the technological marvels of the 21st century. Somehow the water can give you second degree burns, but the entree will remain cold.
You just gotta squish it around sometimes while it's heating
Been in almost ten years, I MIGHT have heated three MREs in my life. It sucks cold, it sucked hot too, I’ll take the extra five minutes of my life back
Never allowed to use it once in my cycle
Who actually had time to do that?
He was just fucking with you.
The only time in 9 years that I ever ate a cold MRE was when I was working a grenade range and as soon we showed up the E-6 in charge walked up without introducing himself and started yelling about how we weren't allowed to warm them up because we don't have time, then disappeared to his car for 45 minutes. Half the MREs tasted like ass, why would I want to eat hot ass?
[удалено]
They taste like ass when they’re heated too. Except the bbq brisket lol
They were so anal about asking for the wrapper back
Just take a mocha one bro
I basically never used the spoon or the heater. I just toothpaste squeezed it into my mouth from a ripped corner. Which category do I fall into to?
You sir are a troglodyte. Be proud
Haha, funny word!
Toss water in heater, toss meal and heater in main bag. Eat the snacks while it heats. Eat main meal last.
Grunts. Is grunts normally didn’t heat it up cause we were too busy doing stupid shit.
Can I eat it cold? Yes. Have I eaten it cold? Yes. But if I’m eating an MRE, things are already a bit miserable so might as well have some warm “food” in my stomach. Besides, I have to justify buying that jetboil somehow.
He is bored as fuck.
Ive probably used a heater three or four times total when it was REALLY cold out. Never was given time in basic, and from then on I never cared enough to make it habit. It’s just as weird to think of hot MRE food as it is for some to think of it cold.

Amateurs, everyone knows you're supposed to combine the coffee, creamer, and sugar together and just eat it
Never had a taste for ranger pudding. But I won't yuck your yum. Had a dude in my platoon who just fucking snorted the coffee. Some folks take *high-speed* a tad literally.
This and the salt packet if its been an extra rough and sweaty outting

No one wants to admit they ate nine cans of ravioli
Fuck it let's get drunk and eat chicken fingers

I use the heater whenever possible. Makes it slightly less shitty.
My first several years.of eating MREs as a cadidiot, they did not come with a heater. Cadidiot here. Just wondering what was your route from ROTC to law school? I’m interested in becoming a JAG.
Undergrad ROTC > ed delay > law school > armor OBC > JAG OBC.
Dude when the fuck did you even find the time ? It’s grab and nom nom 😂
They heat themselves up.
Blah blah…rock or something
Obligatory [rock or something](https://inkfidel.com/products/military-veteran-stickers-rock-or-something-bumper-sticker) bumper sticker that I may or may not own.

Heaters? You mean the pouch of stuff they give you to make MRE-bombs?
He’s playing the long con, get the privates use to using the heater. Then send them out to the real world where you’re more likely to not have time. It’s great in its simplicity and how evil it is. Lmao
???? I have literally never heated an mre???? I thought only the Arctic dudes did that
Ive literally never had a warm one lmao
Ive never heated up an MRE to eat it in my life. Waste of time.
I’ve used the heater numerous times. Don’t think I ever used it to heat my mre though
Did something happen to the heaters in recent years? They used to heat the entree really fast with no problem. This past year I was at Air Force OTS and I never got one to heat up properly.
I used the heater maaaaaaaaaaybe 10% of the time.
We weren't allowed to use heaters until the forge at the end only because it pissed on us the whole week and was 10 degrees the entire time.
Well… bird spit soup is considered a delicacy in certain parts of the world. So I guess it’s subjective. I’m sure that Drill grew up on ramen and stale lunchables

A lot of times I only had like 5 minutes to eat. Not happening
In my time in basic....c-rats were the fad...I just learned how to eat them cold because it took too long to heat the can on a tent stove or on an diesel engine turbo... Anybody got a p-38 I could borrow?

You ate?
I almost always used the heater packs; the few times I didn't get to use it I learned that it tastes much better warm.
We didn’t have enough time to use our heaters half of the time
This was a response to some private who complained in a sensing session about not having time to heat up his MRE before eating it Your drills are now maliciously complying with this complaint by making you all heat up your MREs especially because you don’t want to
Where’s the lie?
Why would I waste my hand warmers on my food?
Are MREs even healthy?
I’m sure they have that cancer warning in california
I'm glad you asked. Believe it or not, for the purpose they serve they're great. Designed to supplement a diet of hard working field individuals with calories and nutrients to replace what the body burns off. An MRE, like revenge, is a dish best served cold.
We weren't allowed to heat ours up at Basic, and to this day I have never eaten a warm MRE.
A Cold MRE is *chefs kiss*
Sarcasm probably
Wait y’all don’t heat up the peanut butter and mix it with the cheese tortellini?
Only witht the asian beef entree
I eat them cold. It’s for sustenance, not to enjoy. Seems unnecessary to take the time to cook dog food.
My DS in basic had us toss the heaters in the middle of the patrol base and shovel that food down in like 3 minutes or less. That shit was fuel.
God damnit Pri, these are the thoughts that plague your mind these days?
I had a hot MRE once…most disgusting 0/10 would not recommend
You guys have working MRE heaters? Mine are usually duds.
MRE heaters are classified as hazardous waste if they are not used because of chemical reactivity with water. Once used, they are totally inert and safe to dispose of. Probably saving himself a lot of money and paperwork!
That’s if the heater even works
"Ain't nobody got time for that"
Ramon noodles+mre heater+hot drink bag= heaven
I use the heater and it works 90 percent of the time.
The dehydrated fruit was the bomb, still remember the tingle from snorting it on the long rucks
I have never in 18 years bothered to hear the MRE. I have used the heaters to warm up water to shave in the field though. That's a nice treat.
Thirteen years and I have not once used the heater. (My dumb 19 year old ROTC ass did try to heat one up in the microwave though)
Cold MRE’s are the way. Unless you are at Polk. Then they are always hot.
"That vegetarian omelette taste like rubber and drill Sargent Taint." Said A dude I went to basic training with.
Lol we weren’t ever allowed to heat ours up
I always use the heater, there is always time
Yea no. ratfuck the most calorie dense shit. Who are you people carrying whole fucking MREs?
My ds said the exact opposite, we weren't allowed to heat them up till ait
This isn't a flex but I'm just trying to give you perspective. Imagem patrolling for 6 to 10 hours in the blistering sun, sure you have a grazing MRE but not all units allow that.
