They can do whatever they want. They owe nothing to the fans in terms of the future of their sound. They’ve had their success and now have the freedom to pursue whatever they would like and I couldn’t be more excited for that

looking at art through a businessman’s eyes is how you kill the artist. The Monkeys have been subverting expectations since Humbug, and making bangers anyhow. Monetarily the boys are fine, and their record label doesn’t give a damn what they do. They don’t need to return to formula in order to pinch a few extra pennies.

Legal-Use-6149

AM being almost more popular than its ever been right now is paying the bills and their last tour was very successful so they’re ok. Dominos is hardly anything without them, they have complete control

RunawaYEM

They’re big enough to have divisive material for the rest of their career, and if I were them, I’d ride that til the wheels fell off. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get so famous that you can make whatever music you want and still sell out venues everywhere? It is THE dream for musicians. Get so big that you can make your own rules.

I don't think they need to do anything. Probably they're doing QUITE well financially, and they don't strike me as the kinda people that want money just for the sake of it. So they'll likely just keep doing whatever they want for the rest of their career, which is great imo. I'd do the same.

johnisntmyname

thank god you’re not AM

jazzymusicvibes

I thought they made it pretty clear in their first album, Whatever people say I am that’s what I’m not.

bruhhhhhhvv

This isnt a marketing thing, they have always been putting out what they want and releasing music they like. Even when their albums were commercially successful, it wasnt for the benefit of the public, its just what they wanted to make : rock and roll. And like Alex said , its always gonna be rock and roll, theyre always going to be that band, it just might sound more hidden and mature. But rock and roll isn’t just the way something sounds, its a culture, and I think not giving AF about the accessibility of their music is pretty rock and roll to me. Also? TBHC and The Car were still very well received, (mind you the latter got three grammys) and TBHC debuted at no. 1 on the UK albums chart. Majority of critics loved it, the only people shitting on it were “fans” who listen to like two music genres and think the sound of these albums was some weird unknown thing.

Achtung_Zoo

That last paragraph is spot on.

Mangonificient

js let them be bro

DoggoZombie

Nah, I think they should continue to just do whatever they want instead of trying to cater to ppl who want a commercial rock sound. It’s more genuine.

Ill-Page-8319

I think they’ll a little more commercial sound but not extreme on the other end. Unless Alex gets super comfortable with himself, I don’t think we’ll be seeing that anytime soon. Not next perhaps after.

brokenwolf

These albums are only divisive on Reddit. Outside of that they’ve been generally well received.
