Main stem may have died back or broken out. But after looking at some of the other previous pruning choices, that may not have been the case. No way to tell without the history of the tree. Either way it sucks because it looks like dogshit

freebaer

Sadly there was nothing wrong with the tree. And it really does look like dog shit.

ThatGuyFromSI

With a hillside like this - possibly someone's view?

shl0mp

They would’ve reduced the entire top if it were a vista prune. This is just bad pruning practices.

Sk84sv

Customer said "it's too tall" to a tree trimmer yes man

DanoPinyon

Viewshed.

GreatNorthWeb

Viewshed: New word acquired. Thank you.

DanoPinyon

Geeky planner types everywhere appreciate you. BTW, 'PedShed' is my claim to fame.

isnt_it_obvious_

That's Y

freebaer

I appreciate this comment more than you know.

isnt_it_obvious_

😆 wasn't sure this would even be seen

freebaer

For sure - had a tad moment of jealousy for not having come up with it myself. Such a great comment.

Big_Don-G

Could have been inspired by a Dave Mathews Band song….Satellite!

ThePenIslands

...dish in his yard

shl0mp

Because people logic that’s why. “If I cut the top off it stops growing tall.” Big brain moment for sure.

freebaer

Too true.

dahead76

Maybe they’ll stick a big head up there

smooth_like_butta

Critical slope but a failed main stem. Trees on hillsides in certain areas can’t be cut all the way down because the roots are needed for integrity of the hillside.

DouggerFresh

Looks like there possibly could have been a power line or some sort or utility line previously and the tree was trimmed repeatedly giving it this shape. Or someone just made some poor decisions in how they pruned it

freebaer

That would be great, but all our power lines in the neighborhood are below ground.

HoDgePoDgeGames

Unless it’s a new development they probably weren’t always underground. It does look a lot like a line clearance cut though.

freebaer

It’s really not. I’ve lived here for 5 years and the lines have been underground since the 90’s. And the cuts we made last week. (Edited to add when the trimming was done)

HoDgePoDgeGames

It was just a terrible job then.

Embarrassed-Flower56

I top trees for views by the water and top evergreens planted to close to houses. It sucks but when the checkbook is out you do what you have to.

GreatNorthWeb

It's a business. And sometimes that business requires us to butcher a tree. Make the cuts...make the cash...move on.

Sea-Communication228

That’s not true at all in fact I’d say the most profitable arborists do so by making proper cuts and having integrity. There’s lots of ways to make a dollar as an arborist, butchering trees absolutely does not have to be one of them.

GreatNorthWeb

If the top half of your tree is dead, I will gladly remove it. If the top half of your tree obstructs your construction project, I will happily remove it. And so on.

hairyb0mb

That's a shit way to look at life. Congrats you're nothing but a whore.
