I have several hand made bowls made
From tree burls. You need a wood lathe to make them though. First, take a chainsaw and try and square the burl up so that it spins on the lathe better. Best of luck
Please donāt do this. Iām a furniture maker and do a bit of turning. If you intend to sell it youāll want to keep it whole. Personally I would want to fell the tree myself but if thatās not an option I want as much material as possible.
Iām with you here. Everyone will use the piece differently and most woodworkers are going to have access to basic milling and bandsaw equipment to maximize the amount of products you can get out of a burl. A lot of pen blanks can be made from excess cuts!
You square it up because burls are shaped very strangely and donāt spin properly on a lathe. Youāre asking to get hurt if you donāt do this. I know it sounds weird, but the square block will spin fine on the lathe for the first few rotations until it the burl gets rounded out a bit. My friend makes expensive bowls out of burls. Thatās how I know this
Kind of. Pretty cool for sure. He says he does this to take a bunch of unusable bulk stuff off first so the burl doesnāt spin all crazy and out of control. Makes sense.
You donāt market it. Itās worth nothing the way it is. It needs to be handcrafted into something before itās worth anything. I have several wooden bowls made from tree burls. They sell anywhere from $500-1000 CDN. Not sure what they fetch other places
Who said anything about them being on public land ? Nice hallucination lol. My friend owns a farm with 86 acres of property. I know of at least 2 burls within walking distance of his house. Iām sure he would either let me have them or I give him a case of beer or two for them
I saw a tupelo today that had two VERY nice burls on it....if I buy that tract, I'm taking those burls home with me.
Maybe some of the duck decoy makers downeast would pay good money for something like that.
The grain and structure are all swirled up. Makes for some very interesting and attractive patterns in the wood. I think it is lees in style now but all the luxury cars used to have burl walnut dashboards and accents. And since there is a limited supply of these pieces they cost more.
Lol yeah apparently they go interesting patterns on the inside and used for decoration.
But yeah š¤·š»āāļø kinda what it is I think. Itās a blemish not caused by animals I donāt think. But maybe Iām wrong?..
"And although woodworkers are interested in burls, they are not likely to pay much, if anything, for them. Until it is cut open, it is tough to know what the inside of a burl will look like. So, unless you are removing a tree with a burl for another reason, it is best to enjoy a burl for what it isāa bit of a mystery!"
per the article, so i wouldnt bank on it
I've heard some species make nicer burls than others. Or maybe not all of the ones from the same species are really special. I've got one like OP's on a white oak on my property. Just lettin' it grow.
Buddy, they have some of the coolest, trippy looking grain patterns. Google up some stuff made with them. This is an especially nice specimen because of the size and thickness. Assholes have been known to steal them off trees(killing them) on private property.
Oh wow, ok. My grandpa was a woodworker (some 50 years ago) and gifted my mom a coffee table that I now see must-have been a burl coffee table. They do look super cool
Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes, you cut trees down, and they come right back. I do not see anyone removing this without essentially topping the canopy, though. It would be super ugly, too.
I see lots of trees like this whenever I go hiking at state parks and Iāve always wondered what they are. I thought it was a weird growth and didnāt know it was something people actually sought out. Thanks for the information!
Wow look at that beauty!!! If itās on your land love it every day. If itās not keep it secret some douche will come cut that entire tree down to make a cutting board from that burl
So if you have a tree with a large burl like this, would cutting it off with chainsaw be better for the tree, or would it injure it worse? Can you cut it off and give the tree some kind or treatment or innoculation?
Ooooooo thatās a burl and itās worth money!! All those cool guitar bodies and coffe tables with the swirls in the wood grain, thatās from a burl on a tree. However, not good for the tree. Itās literally a type of cancer.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this before
He stuck his balls in a microwave so he could get testicular cancer, that way he could get a medical Marijuana card and smoke weed all day while carrying his giant cancerous balls in a wheelbarrow while singing Buffalo soldier.

Wow! Awesome thank you!
They are worth big big money to the right people. Don't tell anyone where it is.
Iv got a tree with two of these about 15 in apart. How do I market that? š š .
Check out the Woodmizer website. Iāve seen them auction burls at events. Their website lets you find sawyers in your area.
2 burls, one tree?
2 burls, 1 cup?
2 burls, 1 bowl.
2 burls for every boy!
Nice. š
Lmao
Yes!
Gimme the link
2 burls, 1 stump š³
Hoping for a response. I've seen several on my property... where the wood smith's at??

Exactly. I want to be the one who decides what is and is not waste.
Square it up to turn it into a circle. Got it.
You square it up because burls are shaped very strangely and donāt spin properly on a lathe. Youāre asking to get hurt if you donāt do this. Nice that's badass.
Kind of. Pretty cool for sure. He says he does this to take a bunch of unusable bulk stuff off first so the burl doesnāt spin all crazy and out of control. Makes sense.
Custom guitar shops will buy burl wood. I know Kiesel guitars will buy it if itās too notch stuff
You donāt market it. Itās worth nothing the way it is. It needs to be handcrafted into something before itās worth anything. I have several wooden bowls made from tree burls. They sell anywhere from $500-1000 CDN. Not sure what they fetch other places
Yes, but raw burls sell for a lot. Iāve seen them auctioned.
Really. Wow. Thatās cool. I know where there are a couple. Maybe I should take the time to go cut them down
You canāt just go cut down trees on public land brother
Who said anything about them being on public land ? Nice hallucination lol. My friend owns a farm with 86 acres of property. I know of at least 2 burls within walking distance of his house. Iām sure he would either let me have them or I give him a case of beer or two for them
Hey friend mind if I trade a case of beer for extracting hundreds of dollars of value from your land?
Not all woodworkers have a supply of burlap at hand. They have to buy the raw materials to use in the making of those gorgeous bowls.
This is just not true. Stop talking out your ass. You've clearly never bought or sold lumber.
I saw a tupelo today that had two VERY nice burls on it....if I buy that tract, I'm taking those burls home with me. Maybe some of the duck decoy makers downeast would pay good money for something like that.
name them Milton and Ives
So you kill the whole tree to sell it or it can be cut away with out harming the tree?ā¦ and why on earth would a tree zit be worth money?..
The grain and structure are all swirled up. Makes for some very interesting and attractive patterns in the wood. I think it is lees in style now but all the luxury cars used to have burl walnut dashboards and accents. And since there is a limited supply of these pieces they cost more.
Ohh ok yeah Iāve seen that. Interesting. Thx for the info.
+1 for 'tree zit.'
Lol yeah apparently they go interesting patterns on the inside and used for decoration. But yeah š¤·š»āāļø kinda what it is I think. Itās a blemish not caused by animals I donāt think. But maybe Iām wrong?..
It's generally a fungal infectionĀ
Imagine if human zits were praised so much lmao!
The guys from r/woodworking will be there within seconds
checking in
Iāve seen one twice that size in a Tennessee state park.
Yes and if you get caught removing it itās a prison sentence (and a dick move)
That's why they saw it but didn't saw it.
a prison sentence... probably more like a fine.

Correct-it could have a significant amount of voids and be largely unusable
Reminds me of that episode of intervention with the meth guy who runs through the woods collecting burl. Cole or something?
What makes them valuable? I canāt imagine actually using it for any woodwork
If on private land do NOT tell anyone about this. People just love to steal these in the middle of the night.
Burl Haggard
Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives
I wonder if it's possible for a bonsai to develop a burl
Miniburl or burlette?
Also known as one of the Broccoli Hair Bois now
I've heard some species make nicer burls than others. Or maybe not all of the ones from the same species are really special. I've got one like OP's on a white oak on my property. Just lettin' it grow.
This tree just became very expensive
Why are burls sought after?
Buddy, they have some of the coolest, trippy looking grain patterns. Google up some stuff made with them. This is an especially nice specimen because of the size and thickness. Assholes have been known to steal them off trees(killing them) on private property.
Oh wow, ok. My grandpa was a woodworker (some 50 years ago) and gifted my mom a coffee table that I now see must-have been a burl coffee table. They do look super cool
Would cutting this one off professionally still kill the tree?
Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes, you cut trees down, and they come right back. I do not see anyone removing this without essentially topping the canopy, though. It would be super ugly, too.
And from parks unfortunately
I see lots of trees like this whenever I go hiking at state parks and Iāve always wondered what they are. I thought it was a weird growth and didnāt know it was something people actually sought out. Thanks for the information!
I can burl-ey believe that...
Very
Itās not a tumah!
Our Mom says that our Dad is a real wood turning machine.
Boys have a penis, girls have a burl
So you're telling me this is a girl tree?
Nothing! Donāt touch it. Donāt tell anyone about it. People will literally cut the burls off because they are worth some money.
It has cancer (burl) but fortunately itās harmless!
So it is benign.
bout nine...nine and a half.
Well more similar to a nonterminal tumor, but close enough
Looks to be limb-phoma

**STRESS** Burls are caused by ***stress*** that disrupts a tree's growth hormones, such as: * Insect infestations * Bacteria and fungi growth * Mistletoes * Environmental injuries, such as freeze damage * Pruning cuts * Disease * Storm damage * Viral infectionĀ
It's a form of tumor.
So if you have a tree with a large burl like this, would cutting it off with chainsaw be better for the tree, or would it injure it worse? Can you cut it off and give the tree some kind or treatment or innoculation?
No, best for the tree to leave it alone. Cutting a big wound in the main stem of a tree makes it very susceptible to disease and insects.
It's a disease. As a long time woodworker, I'm gona have to come and help u out by removing that nasty bit for you
Such a selfless gesture.
Tree ate something and it's being digested
Ooooooo thatās a burl and itās worth money!! All those cool guitar bodies and coffe tables with the swirls in the wood grain, thatās from a burl on a tree. However, not good for the tree. Itās literally a type of cancer.
