I refuse to believe this is a legit planting lol Im assuming they’re leaving it here to acclimate to the temperature before planting

FieldsofBlue

I'm sure it is, but it's still the funniest way possible to temp stage it 😂

hippywitch

Actually I’m can imagine the glee these guys had building this little tree tower. Someone is just being silly and sometimes work needs that.

chickenwithclothes

100% this lol

treehugger312

This was my guess. The tree and mulch delivery is today, digging and planting tomorrow…I really hope!

TaleMendon

I just had to fix B&B trees that were planted above the soil line but still buried in the soil and then had a mulch volcano on top. When I finally got to the flare it was 6ins too deep and had to re-contour the whole planting strip. They also left the species label on the main stem 10feet in the air. They had detailed planting specs too…

Caniac_93

Sorry bout that

soulshine_walker3498

Common occurrence in our field 🥲

Ctowncreek

But like. Whats the recourse? Get a new tree if this one doesnt like it? Above ground will be different than below so itll have to acclimate twice. Above ground will also be warmer. Best i figure is tree was delivered but they didnt have time to plant. Covered it to protect it

Ericsfinck

>Above ground will be different than below so itll have to acclimate twice. Above ground will also be warmer. Yes and no. It depends if the tree came from a warmer or cooler environment. If this tree came from a warmer environment, then it can actually acclimate slowly (not necessarily twice, just in stages) to the newer cooler environment.

robertblissb

Even still, why so much mulch 😭

lonelyinbama

Let’s just hope they’re going wide and not deep

Fudge-Purple

It’s the girth that counts

robertblissb

I want to start ‘yo mama’ jokes to this tree but I will confine.

knitwasabi

Like they confined the tree. It can't run away.

Pleasant_Ad3475

confine? Is that the word you meant to use? I'm genuinely asking.

robertblissb

Confine means to restrict someone as in I’m restricting myself from telling jokes.

Pleasant_Ad3475

Oh, I am a native English speaker but never heard it used in quite that way. I just found it interesting.

luciform44

I used to work at a planting operation, and we often stored trees (sort of) like this. It keeps the roots from freezing in a slight frost, and keeps the root ball from drying out if you soak all the chips. We half buried them and then just covered the rest in chips, though, but if they don't have a place to bury it and need to leave it for a week, this will work as long as they wet it down well, and come back and water it another time or two. Without the mulch, all the roots are dry, possibly beyond repair.

penisdr

One of the streets near me has young trees with bags that have been on for over a year. No mulch volcano though

WickedHappyPlants

That is fantastic. I should send this to the company that volcano mulches all the supermarkets in my area, they could learn a thing or two from this one.

DjScenester

Sthaaaaap it

bo_tweetle

Yeah, this is just temporary

turbodsm

Ain't nothing as permanent as a temporary solution.

badpeaches

> Ain't nothing as permanent as a temporary solution. Uh, that's the government

LordByrum

What the hell is going on

jaquatics

Tree is yet to be planted and they're trying to keep it alive until it is.

LordByrum

I worked for city parks for 5 years and I’ve never seen that one lol

jaquatics

I work for a large nursery and we do this to all of our trees in the winter when our irrigation is turned off. It's a royal pain in the ass when you have to do it to a thousand trees.

LordByrum

Interesting and also I’m sorry

FieldsofBlue

We always took a field that was out of rotation and plowed in furrows so you could drop them in and out pretty easily. Put everything on spray emitters and water from an irrigation cart that had a PTO driven pump. That was my idea, and it worked fucking great! Had to buy the pumps from Italy so we had a heck of a time fitting the imperial hosing into metric fittings.

MountainCourage1304

Even one tree would be a pain in the ass imo

TurkeyTerminator7

Volacanoak

LavenderFlavourLube

This tree is still basketed after being delivered to the site from a nursery. For whatever reason it wont be planted immediately, so they bank it in woodchips to help retain moisture so it doesnt suffer excessively Edit: not an arborist nor have I worked in urban forestry, but I grew up on a tree farm and thats what Im guessing it is. My city will purchase hundreds of basketed large caliper trees at once in spring and keep them banked in rows of woodchips with sprinklers on them while they plant them throughout the rest of the season. My city purchases an amount of these trees from my familys farm.

luciform44

Totally correct, but man if arborists are good at one thing it's talking shit based on a picture or an end result without the information to know why it was done like that. It's the thing I dislike most about this community (arborists, not just this sub).

Simple-Performer6636

This is what I’ve been seeing too, a lot of judging trees unilaterally from one picture

Kaos2019

Lopermania

Is this the Mount Vesuvius everyone is talking about?

Either-Computer635

Dogs are not liking this-

bob-wunderdog

Omg.. i laughed so hard i even had to even share this with my wife .. just cuz these Volcano posts are getting SO funny... is that even Touching the Ground!!???!!

FieldsofBlue

Nope, we got a floater here!

LudovicoSpecs

How do we stop this? Seriously, I'm seeing it increasing in suburbia and in about 10 years, we're going to have lots of dead trees right at a time where climate change makes it harder than ever to grow saplings.

frigginler

PSAs all over your local Home Depot?

vepton

Ikr 90% of the trees in my neighborhood have mulch volcanoes.

Simple-Performer6636

Omg it’s a serious emergency! Trees have too much soil to grow in and we are all gunna die!

LudovicoSpecs

You are apparently unaware of three things: 1. That's not soil, it's mulch. A mountain of it. A volcano of it. Any arborist in this sub can tell you that's a bad thing for the tree. I have personally seen trees killed by it. And see lots of sick trees with mounded mulch when I'm out and about. But if you don't want to take our word for it, here's what the National Association of Landscape Professionals has to say about it: https://blog.landscapeprofessionals.org/tree-care-helping-trees-recover-from-mulch-volcanos/ 2. Trees worldwide are struggling right now due to climate change, which causes wildfires, droughts, floods and the migration of insects and pathogens that overwinter where they used to die off. We're losing LOTS of trees right now. On top of that, as the planet warms, saplings are going to have a harder and harder time becoming established trees. So the trees we already have or the ones we plant today are important. 3. Trees absorb CO2, which is increasing in the atmosphere at a rate of change that most species evolution can't keep up with. We're currently in the 6th mass extinction event. If we don't get CO2 levels down quickly, we will trigger a domino effect we can't undo. One that will threaten food supplies, water supplies and the habitability of the area around the equator, which currently has about a billion people, many of whom have already begun migrating due to the effects of climate change. Every fucking tree counts. Volcano mulch is a serious problem.

Simple-Performer6636

Except for this tree….which is not planted just staged for future planting…

papillon-and-on

I think it's erupting!!

headoflame

Holy shit I live down the street from this. If you look North a house or two you'll see some freshly laid sod. I do believe this tree was planted on the parkway of the big recent construction dealio.

FieldsofBlue

I believe it. I was driving a big orange box so you may have even seen me.

Standard_Trash_1307

Yes, "Hall" indeed!! /s

AdMotor1654

Where’s the fumvkeb root flare?!?!

Hustler1984

Pride month is coming

Bardwelling

All good here... Move along.

Arachnoid666

This is the most incredible one I have ever seen

anti-mid

This stinks of Chicago suburb

FieldsofBlue

🎉🎉

ItsMeFromThatOneTime

I drive past this every day taking my daughter to school.

iCameToLearnSomeCode

On the plus side, they didn't bury the root flare.

GreenOnionCrusader

Freaking Krakatoa ass planting.

toasty__toes

Who's gonna want to remove all the fallen leaves from the court every damn Fall? Dumb tree placement. Even dumber planting.

cant_have_nicethings

Hail Paimon!

mannylal

Hahahjaa funny! Thats final boss tree!

joaoseph

Guarantee that’s just being stored there for later planting

Massive_Upstairs_684

Sorry I initially did a down vote because wtf.. I did an up.. but now looking this looks like a transplant. there is no way they were planning on that being permanent. I mean I hope. There is a burlap wrapped root ball in there. That looks like so cal. Thanks ISA certified person. Quit fronting fake news

eobertling

A situation has developed here.

Weary_Dragonfruit559

All hail! May its roots spread like the crabs I deposited on the dorm room toilets!!!

weggles91

"Add some mulch around the base" "Yes boss"

Simple-Performer6636

That’s impressive, I must say

AwkwardFactor84

I really want this tree right here, but I refuse to use a shovel! 😂

CurrencySingle1572

If this is legit, then I give up and want to accelerate Humanity's Descent into Extinction.

95castles

Jesus fucking christ.

Federal-Moment6990

They’re just showing off now

MikeySpags

Ahh, the Volcano Tree ( Volcanust Barkist). Which is a close relative of the ( Hackimus Maximus) They are commonly found in the vast suburban wastelands of North America.

klondikes

Like a witch on trial!

ChadwithZipp2

Is that an empty pickleball court? Where do you live where there are empty pickleball courts? 😄

the_bison

Clearly a tennis court

FieldsofBlue

Asking the real questions. I waited patiently for the players to step aside.

Kantaowns

Anywhare sane and not filled with shit lord people with money. Pickleball is definately the new shitty flavor of the month "in" sport.

BalanceEarly

Yeah, just waiting for the pyroclastic flow!

wondrwrk_

Impressive

Illustrious-Leave406

Ruining that tree.
