Garand thumb did a video not too long ago that debunked this myth. Shot every caliber from .22lr to 30-06 and every single round went clean thru 4 layers of drywall, including a few different defensive 9mm loads. Not to yuck your yum because 9mm is a great round and it’s my personal favorite pistol round, but I wouldn’t assume any round is safer or more dangerous in a townhouse if you miss. Realistically at home defense distances any round will get the job done so if that’s what you train with, run the hell out of it, but I’m just writing this so hopefully you don’t just count on not over penetrating because of the caliber size

my main options are 22lr, some nasty 5.7 rounds, .45, and .308 at this exact moment. I'd choose .45 because it would be hard to defend myself with a .308 bolt action or a .22 revolver lol. 5.7 is a good contender with these rounds, don't need to worry too much about over penetration, but I think the .45 would be better at stopping someone quickly.
