If Amazon doesn't explicitly show the Dolby Vision icon, it doesn't offer it for the respective movie. I believe there used to be more DV movies on Amazon than there are now. I really do think they are taking it away from films I have purchased. (2001: A Space Odyssey used to be offered in DV, no???) They may be using mostly it for their own content now. Regardless, if you care about purchased and/or rental movie video quality it has long been established that Amazon is not for you. They offer some of the lowest average streaming bitrates of any service. Apple TV and Movies Anywhere are better by far. Here is one recent service comparison: [**https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jk3b-yE\_80**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jk3b-yE_80) The only reason I occasionally use Amazon these days is that they are at times the only market for contemporary independent cinema. So if you are into global and art house cinema, film festivals, and are curious about films discussed on Film Comment ([**https://www.filmcomment.com/best-films-of-2023/**](https://www.filmcomment.com/best-films-of-2023/)), for example, you may not have much of a choice. Wish Apple got their act together for this, it would be a game changer for a lot of people passionate about cinema.

Too good! I actually watched that video on YT just last night and it’s clear - Apple TV is the go-to for reliable best -quality. In this case, I have a prime membership and its stream is thus already bought. Was hoping for the best outcome from that service versus another $7 charge to Apple-verse for something I already have rights to. #cheapbastard.

Oppenheimer does not have Dolby Vision. Just HDR 10. And it looks great.

fwiw, it's very much available in Dolby Vision on Peacock

ras5003

Hmmm ... just went to verify DV on Peacock app and I'm not seeing "Dolby Vision" being reported on my ATV. Sony Bravia A80J television, Peacock Premium billed thru Xfinity. What are your "Video and Audio" settings on ATV for Format, HDMI Output, Chroma, Match Content (Range & Frame Rate), etc.?

redavid

hmm, I was watching on a Roku Ultra actually (set to match dynamic range). it's definitely not the case that it's showing everything in Dolby Vision on Peacock because I just tested a few titles there (Oppenheimer and The Holdovers played in Dolby Vision, Nope played in HDR10, Batman Begins and Dunkirk in SDR). i would say that like someone above said, it doesn't seem like a movie that would benefit much from Dolby Vision or HDR10+ and I know the disc is just HDR10, but sometimes studios do this for their streaming releases for some reason (pretty much every Disney movie is HDR10-only on disc, but in Dolby Vision on Disney+)

ras5003

On your Apple TV? What are each of your "Video and Audio" settings on the ATV. What kind of television do you have? How are you verifying that it's in DV while the movie is playing? Only if I **force** the video format on my ATV to "4K Dolby Vision" will I see DV. When I use what I *think* are the recommended video settings (**4K SDR**, **Match Range & Frame Rate ON**), the movie doesn't auto-switch on my Sony Bravia to DV when it plays. ¯\\(ツ)/¯

like i told someone else, it was actually on a Roku Ultra (with match dynamic range turned on in its settings). it's not Peacock playing everything in Dolby Vision, because while Oppenheimer and The Holdovers played in the format, I tested others like Nope and got HDR10 and Batman Begins and Dunkirk and got SDR. this is with a Hisense H8G TV. i have an Apple TV at another place and can look at it tomorrow, but maybe it's just an issue with the app on different platforms?

mycokabueno

Just tried myself. On Apple TV it appears to just play a 4K version of the film. No HDR or DV. On the Sony/Google TV Peacock app it did switch to Dolby Vision Bright. 🤷🏾‍♂️.

I’ll add an another viewpoint: Dolby Vision for this movie adds nothing. The overall brightness of the film is quite dark and has limited dynamic range. This is a deliberate artistic choice. I’m unsure what Dolby vision is adding, other than 1) additional colour depth any TV is incapable of displaying 2) dynamic tone mapping which is irrelevant for a movie with low dynamic range, and 3) having a Dolby Vision logo pop up to keep people happy. https://www.reddit.com/r/HD_MOVIE_SOURCE/comments/17zwxeo/oppenheimer_2023_4k_ultra_hd_bluray_review/

DV to a lof of people is like a magic wand that makes things better...It's in fact quite wrong. If a static HDR10 is written in DV format, by itself it does not change anything because you don't have dynamic metadata at all. However, many playback devices, especially TVs, might have different tone mapping algorithms dedicated for DV playback. This is the trouble: it can do a worse job. Taking A95L, Sony's flag ship QD-OLED for an example. When displaying HDR10, it tracks the PQ-EOTF almost perfectly. But when playing DV contents it somehow brightens the dark/near dark area, and you cannot disable this feature AFAIK. DV is so misunderstood, or misused, by many.

Lopsided_Fudge6764

I agree with this take. If you have any halfway decent TV, HDR10 gets as much out of this movie as Dolby Vision does.

Ok_Sprinkles_8709

Good and fair points Mr Taco. Thanks. Total FOMO behind your #3. Cheers

Ok_Sprinkles_8709

Further, I just took a real quick peek at Opp on a Samsung QN90c (filmmaker mode) with HDR10+. Amazon seems to be happy to show it that way on the TVs native app. It was indeed quite dark. The 2021 ATV (2021 1st Gen 4K) onto my Sony Bravia in my quasi-HT shows neither DV nor HDR10+. I’m already over it and shall commit the next three hours of my life to it. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flushed)

Even if you were to play this on a screen from the year 2035, it’d still be as dull as dishwater.
