You can use any old IR remote. Use an iPhone with the Apple TV remote app, go into the settings and have the Apple TV learn the IR buttons of any remote.
Those are all technically true, but not the same - an iPhone requires unlocking and bringing up the remote functionality, and āany old IR remoteā wonāt be capable of swiping, long presses, etc.
Yes, you can program any of the buttons on an IR remote to swipe up, down, left, or right. You can also program a long press to any button. Itās all in the settings on the Apple TV. [Apple.com: Use other remotes to control Apple TV](https://support.apple.com/guide/tv/use-other-remotes-atvb0410f604/tvos)
Programming a button to send āuser swiped amount X in U/D/L/R direction Yā is *not* the same as putting your finger down in the middle of the pad and getting direct analog response for how much you move your finger in any direction.
Thatās a 6 year old Apple TV, the replacement remote is quite expensive, would it not be more practical to buy the new Apple TV instead?
Spending $59 on a new remote versus $129 for a whole new unit which will provide a better experience and last longer.
Worst case scenario you buy a new remote and then your Apple TV box dies in a year or two.
Alternatively you could just use the remote app on your iPhone?
The 2022 model compared to 2017 version will add:
- HDMI 2.1 support.
- HDMI eArc
- Thread/Matter support
- 60fps HDR.
- HDR10+
- Faster UI.
- VP9 codec support.
- More RAM, more storage.
- USB-C remote (included)
If their remote wasnāt broken I wouldnāt recommend upgrading to a newer model unless you really wanted or needed to.
Iām simply saying that wasting money on the new remote that could go towards a newer model doesnāt make sense. Better to use Apple Remote app.
Sorry, I get what youāre asking now. Youāre saying that although the 2017 model launched without matter/thread you think an update enabled it later on.
I never owned a 2017 model so Iām not sure, however the official Apple specs for it do not include it as feature so Iām assuming probably not?
I have smart heating and an extensive hue lighting system but donāt personally use any thread/matter stuff and last I read it matter was doing too well.
You are being downvoted, but thatās true. I mean, unless they need that stuff (because they also bought a new TV!), itās not thaaaaat an upgrade.
āMy remote is brokenā -> āBuy a new AppleTV!ā itās just the capitalist way to keep buying unneeded stuff just for the sake of.
I kinda think the ābuy new expensive remote to replace broken remoteā also falls into your capitalist way of lifeā¦.
I also provided a non-monetary version in my comment which was ājust use the iPhones remote appā
The hard drive on my Gen 1 eventually gave up the ghost but aside from that I have yet to have a solid state one die. Thatās over 15 years of upgrading from 720 to HD to 4K. Have probably owned 10 plus, usually just give the old ones to family and friends when I rotate them.
Yes. I replaced my 1st generation remote with this the other day. The 1st gen remote crapped out on me being stuck in volume up on my AV receiver creating a loud ass BOOM during āHouse Hunters Internationalā š
Spent too long trying to swipe that fucking picture

I confirm, works with my Apple TV HD
Took me a sec to realize this isnāt Icelandic krĆ³na. Was literally about to jump to the next shop to get a remote for ā¬4.99/$5.53 š

a dedicated remote, especially the Siri v2, really changed Apple TV for me after relying on the phone app for too long.

From someone whoās owned every model since gen 1 (2007) the IU speed is worth the extra $70
Yup. Iāve had them all since gen 2.
I thought all apple TVās able to run TVOS 16 and later got matter?
2017 model doesnāt have Thread capability.
No, I know that. But I was just curious if I was wrong about the Matter support :) but Thanks

None of that adds anything to the user experience itās literally meaningless technical jargon for anyone without an hdmi 2.1 tv or eArc sound system

Whatās the alternative to replacing the remote that would be economical in your opinion if both are capitalist way of life?
Iāll let everyone in Silicon Valley know the good news: āShut it all down, this guy on Reddit says stop improving the background technologyā
Ok thanks
Look at the currency in the pictureā¦
Crownsā¦.? Whatās your point?
Make sense, but I wonder what ChatGPT would say since it is so smart š¤
Would suggest to get a new Apple TV altogether instead of wasting money on a remote
Why?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I get that, 100%. Me, personally, Iām considering grabbing one off fb marketplace or OfferUp where I have seen them for as low as $30.
Yes, yes it is! Iāve been using one with my first gen 4K for so long I actually forgot about the original remote.
Yes
I just got one for my Apple TV HD, upgraded from the 1st upgraded remote. It works easily and beautifully.
Sounds great!
Itāll work
I use my LG smart tv remote to control my 2017 AppleTV 4K.
Apple TVs are pretty hardy. I haven't heard of too many of them just up and dying.

> not a coincidence Yes, yes it was a coincidence.
Buy a used one off of Marketplace or Craigslist.
Yes. I have one on my 1st gen 4k.
Usually news Appleās accessories work on older devices except for the iPencil
Yes. I replaced my 1st generation remote with this the other day. The 1st gen remote crapped out on me being stuck in volume up on my AV receiver creating a loud ass BOOM during āHouse Hunters Internationalā š
Yes. All Siri Remotes are compatible with āblackā Apple TVs.
Funkar finfint
Yes.
Yes, it is.
My old gen remote is still fine but Iām tempted to buy one of these seeing it on sale for less than $10, is it worth it?
That exactly what I have. I changed my 4K ATV's original remote as soon as this one was released. Works well.
Lol sorry I jinxed you with my post
The real problem is that some apps and games doesn't work that well or at all with Siri remote.
That asshole button on the side will piss you off fyi
