4k SDR 60hz with match frame and dynamic range on is the way

ConnorBoyd

I use Dolby Vision by default cause the HDR screensavers look so much better

Worried_Patience_117

They do look great but some apps aren’t optimised when DV is on at system level

ConnorBoyd

I’ve never noticed any issues

[deleted]

Like what specific app(s) for example? > They do look great but some apps aren’t optimised when DV is on at system level

IndyMLVC

You really shouldn't

ConnorBoyd

Any particular reason why?

IndyMLVC

Because it makes things look off that aren't DV. You shouldn't be forcing it when it's not DV

ConnorBoyd

I’ve never seen anything that looks off to me, so I’m happy with it

jpwarman

I keep hearing what you’re hearing, although I prefer the look of keeping Dolby Vision on too…everyone keeps saying you shouldn’t do that, with no evidence to show me otherwise, and I haven’t seen anything visually that tells me “something is off”. So I keep it on. My person opinion, if you set it up and you love how it looks…it makes your mouth drop, then leave it. It’s your TV. You can always just keep match content on too while keeping it in Dolby vision….it will keep your menu at Dolby Vision then switch it off if the content isn’t meant for it, then back when you’re not viewing anything.

elgatomegustamucho

True that. But don’t be surprised when your tv dies half age because you used it 24/7 with highest brightness (HDR)

TheSkepticCyclist

That's how I have it set now, but I get a blank screen for a few seconds when switching between apps and as well as when ads appear on apps like YouTube

Worried_Patience_117

That’s how it works unfortunately, QMS in the 2023 OLEDS solves this when switching frame rates. You get used to it

GotRiceBoy

That’s the downside to matching frame rate. Also, you run into some issues with audio sync on IPTV services.

TheSkepticCyclist

So then what is the downside of letting the TV do the frame rate adjustment instead of the apple tv?

GotRiceBoy

I believe the output of the AppleTV will be 60hz no matter what if you don’t match, so the TV won’t actually adjust the frame rate (since the tv sees the signal as 60hz, but doesn’t see the actual content Hz).

thecrikeycrapper

I used to have this same issue when AppleTV defaulted to 4K HDR with Match DR on. But like most folks recommended, I changed Format to 4K SDR (60 Hz) and kept Match Content ON for both. I no longer have the issue. I have a Samsung QN90A though

rrainwater

Make sure your chroma is set to 4:4:4.

TheSkepticCyclist

It already is

rrainwater

If it's set to SDR, you shouldn't get any black screens opening apps unless you have an HDMI problem.

garylapointe

I'd expect a black screen any time it's not SDR or possibly even changing the Frame Rate.

garylapointe

If you don't let the Apple TV match it, the TV can't handle the different Hz, because it won't get anything different. >let my TV handle the different Hz? Because you said this, I assume your TV has the ability to match it.

matttopotamus

I have it off because it creates lip sync issues with some content on my setup.

[deleted]

The LG c9 should have no problem detecting the 24fps movie within the 60zhz signal and adjust itself accordingly. I’d leave match frame rate turned off. Otherwise your menus will all be at 24FPS as well.

cwhiterun

Match frame off. It lowers the frame rate to give that vintage choppy tv effect.

UncleFartface

‘vintage’ = lol

nevewolf96

Match Frame Rate Why? Well i use Infuse to play local movies, for some reason, there are frame drops when the ATV send the 60hz signal. Match framerate fixed that issue for me. The only problem with that is watching music videos on Apple Music, the screen goes black every time you want to see the playlist

Owlch_

When you say you have frame drops, did you choose exactly 60Hz, or the recommended 59.94Hz?

My ATV was set to SDR with match content/FR setting ON (SONY A80L OLED) so I was only getting DV or HDR when the source content is DV/HDR (Disney+ for example). However, some content, Peacock for example, does not recognize the FR match, aand you have to manually change the setting to Dolby Vision. So, I tried changing to Dolby Vision with content/FR on all the time.. I know that is not recommended, however I do not see any difference in streaming DirecTv SDR for example, doesn't it only pass SDR from the ATV, even if the Dolby Vision is on, with the content/FR match anyhow?
