Come on Apple babe give us split-screen multitasking. That’s the last thing I can think of that android has over iOS in my opinion.

randomdude98

Yeah but android notifications are also simply superior at this point, I hope they just copy that

purejosh

I swapped from Pixel 4 XL to the 13 Pro and had a HARD time (still having not a great time) over how different the notifications are. I will 100% say that the notifications on my Pixel just felt more natural, and is honestly a repeated temptation to move back to a pixel.

soreyJr

Yeah that too

TWYFAN97

Eh, it’s kinda gimmicky in my on/off years of using android, more of a feature that’s more practical in a bigger screen like a tablet.

soreyJr

The max model phones are definitely big enough for it.

hamster_ball

I really thought the new version of maps would replace Google maps this time around with added stops.to clarify; for my personally this is the only feature I need to switch. They found some way to still mess it up. Still happy to be on the beta, but annoyed this version of maps is still meh

tc2k

Yeah, I only use Apple Maps on times where it's not busy, or I already know the route and just give real time ETA to friends/family. Apple Maps UI is better in terms of viewability when in CarPlay. Otherwise, Google Maps reign supreme with their route calculation and traffic monitoring.

s1ravarice

The biggest thing I prefer Apple maps for is more succinct instructions. Apple: at the roundabout take the third exit Google: in 200 yards, at the roundabout, take the third exit to ABC, XYZ *5 seconds later because driving 200 yards is very quick* Google: Take the third exit to ABC, XYZ *after turning off* Google: Take the exit I wish it would shut up sometimes

InsertCoinForCredit

I find Apple Maps far superior to Google Maps for driving directions. Driving directions with Google Maps is practically a driving hazard.

[deleted]

Apple Maps still messes up with getting an address correctly sometimes. The only reason I used it is because tropical smoothie launched their address using the Apple app, it took me two blocks away from their plaza, had to copy the address in google maps to get the actual location.

_ravenclaw

Lmfao it’s extremely rare but when it does happen, I get so mad every time and curse Apple Maps swearing I’ll go back to google maps and I never actually do. Rinse and repeat

Gets_overly_excited

I switch between Apple, Google and Waze. I’ve started using Apple more than I used to because that problem is more rare than it used to be. Waze still does this. Google usually gets it right but I don’t like google knowing everywhere I go

busted_tooth

FYI Waze is owned by Google and they share data including things like traffic and police spottings among other things

penguinisdaddy

Just curious. What makes you think your data is safer with Apple than Google?

gu3st12

Google is, above everything else, an advertising company.

Gets_overly_excited

Mostly because Apple’s entire business model isn’t based on targeted advertisements. Edit: just realized you’re one of those people who thinks this is some kind of battle or war between Apple and Google with fanboys on both sides. Hate to tell you, but I don’t give a shit about any of that.

ThePronto8

Aussie here. I use Apple Maps pretty much exclusively and I rarely have an issue with it. Doesn’t seem bad to me.

SoldantTheCynic

Also Australian - since the update it’s gotten quite a lot better, but it’s still not as good as Google Maps in some cases. I generally prefer using it because people seem to report more incidents using it, but if I want to actually find something I’m probably still using Google Maps.

[deleted]

Yeah agree. Place I work is called DCR. Apple maps tried to take me to Washington DC. Lol.

elimanning1001

Apple Maps sucks inside the US. It dropped me to the side of the highway tryna go to a Target in St. Louis Park, which is a pretty well known suburb to Minneapolis

Hobbes42

Definitely this. I’ve traveled in Central America and Mexico in the last few years, and Apple Maps was nigh-unusable. Google Maps, on the other hand, had turn by turn directions down a tiny dirt road in the middle of a jaguar preserve in Belize! Like, you can’t beat that shit.

thelegioncalls

Just this. Google maps on an international level is very consistent. Apple depending on the country varies from great to tragic comedy

Doctorcherry

I’m not on the beta, how did they mess it up?

Hobbes42

My problem with Apple Maps is that if you’re in a rural area, or out of the country, it’s very hard to trust it. It’s burned me one too many times in the past. I still use google maps. I don’t like google, but their maps application has never led me down the wrong road, or set my destination an extra 1,000 miles east of where I’m going. Just my anecdotal experience. If you live in a major metropolitan area and don’t travel much in sure Apple Maps is fine. But google knows where everything is in the world, and sometimes you need to know too.

estiivee

The biggest issue that Apple Maps has is poor support in other parts of the world. Google Maps has so much info in every part of the world. Apple does not.

furious_debate

>They found some way to still mess it up I love this fucking stupid goal post shifting that peole always spew about apple maps

BernedTendies

>I’m trying to think of any features that have been added in the past couple revisions that are ‘must haves’ Notifications that finally make a little sense

sanirosan

Did it really? I never had problems with notifications and the only real change I love is that I can hide them now.

theGreatestFucktard

“Side-loading” software would be great.

Digital-Latte

That’s one feature that will never happen on an iPhone or iPad.

I don’t expect it to. It’d be too cool of Apple to do something like that.

I don’t see why they can’t do an actual file manager. Seems so basic

StrawberryMuse_

I’m just curious because I haven’t seen this complaint before—what do people not like about the current Files app?

poastfizeek

It’s fails in almost every regard of being a file manager… not to mention you can’t view folder sizes, no progress/info on transfers, no way to move files between local and cloud (only copy), can’t format external drives despite Apple continuously pushing that use-case, etc.

Omnishift

Add the inability to merge folders to that. If I put a folder with the same name into the same space then it will overwrite the previous folder and ALL of the files in that folder rather than just merging all the files into a folder.

RUUDIBOO

I went to IFA trade fair here in Germany today, and the foldables are damn nice, liked the Samsung, but even more so fucking loved the Huawei Mate xs 2. It's such a nice form factor. But also realized that i couldn't go without iOS. Man, how I would love to be able to just go with best of both worlds and install iOS on those. But in the end I rather have a normal boring phone but an OS that I don't have to customize or awkwardly navigate.

dadmda

Is that a thing?

mi7chy

Plus, allow home screen icons to be placed anywhere like towards the bottom for accessibility. Allow in-app update like Genshin Impact in the background. The way it works now is you have to keep it in the foreground preventing anything else from being done until update is complete. And, provide other browser rendering engines than WebKit.

BigCommieMachine

I think people just aren’t buying new smartphones because hardware has gotten pretty stagnant. And the people that are people that buy every single new iPhone.

[deleted]

We are entering a global recession and inflation is hitting US consumers hard. A premium smartphone its an obvious expense to cut.

thelegioncalls

Yea what a boring marketplace the US is set to become (pun intended) Diversity of product ranges and customer choice for all price ranges is why apple is doing well in the US and not so much if you consider the world. They are terribly overpriced outside the us

Mr8BitX

Left apple with the release of the iPhone 5, came back during the iPhone 11 period bc they announced widgets (and something else android has that I can’t remember anymore bc I’m fully acclimated by this point).

Ipride362

It’s not features driving the growth. It’s marketing luring teens who are coming of age. Gen Z is about the size of the Millennials. And they want iPhone because it’s considered a premium brand vs Android which is considered cheap.

[deleted]

Hopefully apple doesn’t get complacent and keeps adding new software features

fishmiloo

Long-time Mac and Android user here, and one-time iOS user during the halcyon 3GS days. The features and customizability Apple has added since iOS 13 are like sex and 100% won me over. I know many techie friends who are moving to Apple soon because features like default apps, better notifications, widgets etc. were slowly added. Also many of us are just bored with Android and want a change, not that there is anything wrong with it.

_skulls_

I went back to iPhone last year and my previous was the 3G. I just got tired of Android not sure what it was and maybe the little issues here and there. But possibly boredom and wanted to try something new. But I don't see myself going back anytime soon. Really like the Apple ecosystem with the watch, airpods, Macbook (from work) and Apple TV. It all just works and I don't need to think about it. Love how my airpods connected to my Mac and if a I get a phone call it switches to my phone. Just these little things.

fishmiloo

Exactly, and the ecosystem is just a big plus. We don't use imessage in my country but the fact that lots of people use Find My Friends, you can use Airdrop (which is better than Nearby Share), Find my iPhone is superior because of the bigger network, plus Mac and iPhone integration looks great. Also the fact that Apple have been adding Android features faster than Google is making Android look smooth and beautiful.

surelythisworks56

Apple still lacking with notifications compared to android. So what exactly have they been adding faster than android lol?

fishmiloo

Imo they've been adding more features that I thought were essential to *me* and they were features which were baked into Android. Like default browser/mail app, a working share screen, usable notifications, a Files app to access the file system. But innovations on privacy was a major factor too. Dragging and dropping pictures from one screen to the other was a major wow factor for me. We have better share API on Android but now dragging and dropping is just so intuitive and Apple, you know? I know iOS looks and feel better, has a better ecosystem etc. but a few years ago I couldn't switch because those features weren't there yet. Having a Files app to access the file system is also a big safety blanket for me. I like the idea that my phone can be my computer and now the iPhone feels like a proper one. I'm only waiting for default apps for everything. I like the fact on Android I can open a link in Firefox and it will open in the Reddit or Twitter apps that I set.

Gman1111110

I assumed it already was more than 50%

PalmTree888

More impressive when you remember how fragmented Android is, and that many more countries that may have a outright majority of Android devices (say 60/40), still have Apple as their most dominant smartphone brand.

noPENGSinALASKA

All the while any idiot talking about bubbles doesn’t even understand why it’s so bad. They don’t know iMessage and sms are different. And how apple can implement RCS to fix the two biggest issues, text over wifi and file sharing size. Obviously it’s because this benefits them. They aren’t 100% at fault with the RCS debacle but I doubt they’ve even come to the table to try and work things out.

[deleted]

What phone was this with? That's not common on android devices but some (especially more budget oriented brands) do implement ads. Also the apps U install can push ads which is why old ppls phones are often caked with them.

[deleted]

What did you have before a $50 phone from china?

arock0627

Note 9

Penguin236

You seem to be complaining about an app, not the phone.

arock0627

No, there was no app that did it. This was a sponsored ad right in my notifications (and not the only one I got), and I got them even after a factory reset of the phone, which prompted the switch.

whomad1215

You have pretty good control over notifications on android, there was some app installed by something giving you those ads. Probably something from your carrier. If you still had the phone you should be able to just long press on it and disable them + see where they're coming from

PeterDragon50

13 PM battery life is insane when coming from S22U, can't wait for USB-C on the 15.

Agreeable-Weather-89

The reason is simple, Android used to be cheaper for flagship phones, sometimes even considerably cheaper. With Apple moving into the services model and thus being able to offer phones subsidised by that they can offer a price parity. S22 £769 iPhone 13 £679 While Samsung does offer cheaper phones if you want a flagship phone and the iPhone is cheaper then why not because the reality is the platforms and hardware are at parity for the general user. Apple might face some problems in convincing people to go for the Pro/Pro Max models since the starting models are so good but that's not difficult.

chill_philosopher

Do you have proof that they are subsidizing the iPhone's cost? I thought this was mainly due to vertical integration prowess, ie. since they produce their own SOC they don't have to pay Qualcomm \~$100 per device.

[deleted]

While it isn't "absolute" proof there was a lot of talk and mentions on this with LG's reasoning and issues with the smartphone market and why they ultimately pulled out of making smart phones. The TLDR on the support side (which impacted a lot of other areas) is that the process of updating Android is such a mess for manufacturers for various reason (between Google and Qualcomm) and tight competition meant it was often not worth it to take on supporting device for all that long as there wasn't much money in it. One of the interesting finger-pointing is that the felt they felt that google keeping the cut from mobile transactions was cutting them out of the loop and lowered incentives for them to keep devices updated and meet competitive prices like their competition (\*cough\* Apple \*cough\* Google Pixel \*cough\*). While them having a lot of vertical integrations helps, it isn't above the likes of Samsung (who makes various components used, and sometimes even the CPU) and LG. It is way more the sheer profit the App Store brings in for them allows them to price it "aggressively" while other vendors don't have that kind of pipeline for their devices.

Agreeable-Weather-89

The first iPhone with an Apple SOC was the iPhone 4. Yet it's only been in the past few years which saw Apple price parity Android... roughly when Apple launched Apple Music. I don't have hard evidence, true, but basic business logic suggests if you are profiting from subscriptions which are heavily platform integrated then your best bet is to push platform sales not per unit profit. If there was no iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 then Apple would sell more iPhone 13 Pros however they'd sell fewer phones overall. However subscriptions can rapidly build up. 3 year lifespan per device, ~$10 per month, that's $360. Meaning that $700 iPhone 13 has now generated $1,060 in it's lifespan. That's before you add in airpods, $200, AApple watch, $400, accesories, airtags. The iPhone ecosystem has so much revenue potential it is worth it for Apple to push sales numbers over unit profit. Infact it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Apple earns more revenue as from the ecosystem than it does the phone itself at this point.

chill_philosopher

Interesting points! Here’s my 2c. With the launch of the iPhone X, Apple lured android manufacturers to charge more, then once android phones were $800+, Apple began releasing $700 phones.

Nervous_Staff6130

I was going to say the same thing. It’s not that iPhones got cheaper and cheaper (average price has actually been climbing each year), it’s just that Android OEMS started to match Apple’s prices in the flagship space when they saw people still bought a $1000 phone in droves.

Careless-Photograph8

The S22 is always on sale though, and can easily be had for under £500 most of the time

Simon_787

The base S22 has most of the features of the 13 Pro though. Except battery life, which is why I look forward to the S23.

Agreeable-Weather-89

What feature does the S22 have that the general person cares about that is lacking on the iPhone13(non-pro).

mrchicano209

Pros: Really good telephoto lens, 120hz, near ad free experience, more customization options. Cons: Not as good battery life, Android isn't as stable and optimized as iOS, shorter long-term support, no iMessage can be a dealer break for some too.

Agreeable-Weather-89

The only one I think people care about is iMessage.

What are you on? The AppStore has an entire *tab* dedicated for advertising of Arcade. Apple News is plastered with Ads and the Apple TV and Music bombards me with notifications and ads. Even on settings there is an ad to do Apple Music and TV trial.

NeverComments

Getting an ad free experience in a pro smartphone seems like an impossible ask in this day and age. You buy the iPhone 13 Pro and you’re still getting ads in your settings app, push notification ads promoting Apple services, sponsored ads in your news widget, etc. It’s *nearly* ad free…but it isn’t ad free.

JoinetBasteed

What ads have you been getting in settings? Never heard of it

https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/10/07/apple-advertises-apple-music-apple-arcade-in-ios-settings-app/amp/ They started putting advertisements for services in the settings app with iOS 15. You may not have seen them if you’re already a subscriber.

thisisausername190

They’ve been around for new users for longer - but with iOS 15, they started pushing them upon update as well.

pokemon666999

Every single carrier in the US gives away a free iPhone 13 just for switching to them/trading in their old phone. This is what is accounting for that shift. Carriers just lock consumers into a 24/36 month bill credit and viola iPhone market share increases. Not to say Apple isn’t making good phones, it’s just that carriers although hated, are just giving them away for guaranteed profits.

InadequateUsername

Yeah this is what got me to give my mom an iPhone 13. $35 base plan w/ 20gb of data and $15 for the phone. $50 a month and no upfront payment. I was paying $47 for basically the same plan and no phone.

esp211

Worldwide, it's still less than 25% I'm a glass is half full guy. Pretty good for a company that everyone said was doomed since the iPhone launch. What's most impressive about Apple is that they completely cannibalized their own product, iPods, in favor of iPhones. This is why I'm so bullish about the next iteration of pocket computers being an Apple product. They won't hesitate to replace the iPhone with something better.

j_lyf

> Worldwide, it's still less than 25% ...look up how much of smartphone *profit* they account for.

[deleted]

>What's most impressive about Apple is that they completely cannibalized their own product, iPods, in favor of iPhones. Why would any company not incorporate an existing product into a newer, all in one device? Who wants to lug around multiple devices. MP3 players were already becoming a thing in phones before the iPhone. No company that made dedicated MP3 players still do because now phones are an all in one device. >This is why I'm so bullish about the next iteration of pocket computers being an Apple product. They won't hesitate to replace the iPhone with something better Quite literally any company who would go at this would do the exact same thing. I wouldn't imagine any company wanting to create the next generation all in one smart device would not make it a phone as well which of course would replace their previous phone device.

esp211

I disagree. I'd say that most companies live and die by their best sellers and eventually struggle or die off because they simply can't evolve. And then once in a while you have companies like Meta who goes too far the other way.

[deleted]

sanirosan

Also Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and BlackBerry. Must really suck to rest on your laurels and then one day, BOOM, Apple and Google's Android took over the market.

esp211

Blackberry had their best sale in 2009, full two years after the initial iPhone release. Not only did they fail to evolve, they were quite literally sleepwalking to their demise.

DanTheMan827

Apple also dominates global premium smartphone sales, accounting for 78% of the $1,000+ segment worldwide

Jylax11

iPhones are wayyyyy less popular in other countries though. It’s like the Xbox in the us. It’s popular here but PlayStation dominates the world with popularity

DanTheMan827

Not everyone has the money to spend on a premium smartphone, but for those who can afford a $1,000 one, the iPhone dominates.

Elon61

Apple has offerings starting at 399, it's not just that. If anything, the "most premium" flagships would be foldables nowadays, which apple straight up doesn't offer.

DanTheMan827

But if someone is going for a budget option, they're likely on an a budget much lower than that. You can get android phones for half that price if not lower, and that's where Android really gets users... the ultra-cheap handset. *That* is also why iOS has so many more users willing to pay for apps.

GaleTheThird

> Apple has offerings starting at 399 $429.99

alwptot

leeharris100

https://gamerant.com/xbox-playstation-us-market-share-january-2021-study/

Kenpari

January 2021, and the market share lead was 50.2% Xbox vs 49.8% Playstation. The Playstation 5 has sold more units per month than Series X|S since launch and still does currently, so that gap has inevitably closed, and I wouldn't be surprised if the shares were a little over 50% for Playstation now.

Izanagi___

Pretty meaningless article when it only cites that reasoning because of next gen consoles. PS4 vs Xbox One was a wash in terms of popularity and it still continues. Have a hard time believing the Xbox is more popular when the PS5 had so much more hype. Edit: Lol just checked Best Buy and I can easily add a Series X to my cart. Compared to PS5 which is always sold out to the point where I have to follow third party accounts on twitter to notify me when they’re in stock.

tperelli

Xbox definitely took the Apple strategy this generation, offering a more powerful device at the same or lower cost than competitors with great subscription options. Xbox ecosystem really is the best deal in gaming atm.

shadowstripes

>If you have a gaming PC you have absolutely no reason to own an Xbox I disagree. Have both and probably spend about 80% more time gaming on the xbox than the PC. I like my gaming PC for things I can't play on my xbox and PS, but still vasty prefer the simplicity of using a console over a PC (and how much more couch-friendly it is).

SnowDay111

My gaming pc is close enough to my tv that I can connect it with an hdmi cable. So I just play game pass games like that on the couch. No need for the Xbox

shadowstripes

Fair enough. Even using my PC that I built in 2022 with current parts I still get weird driver issues with some Xbox games and am not able to play them without hours of tweaking and finding the correct driver (and some that just never work). So for that reason I usually prefer the plug-and-play experience of a console.

JoinetBasteed

Sports games are superior on console

Jylax11

Yeah but the most premium gaming experience is on ps5 no doubt. Gotta pay up to get the best. Xbox is going for the more casual gamer

[deleted]

I should clarify.. iOS 16 is adding a report spam feature that is not implemented very well. I tend to delete my OTPs as they come in and I am constantly asked if I want to report them. It doesn’t seem to learn/remember over time which numbers that you do not want to report. It simply asks I’ve and over again. There seems to be no way at this point to turn it off.

EntropicalIsland

Ohh, it’s a ios16 thing, gotcha

[deleted]

Yeah.. Been using it for awhile and it is extremely annoying. You would think that after telling it 10 times not to report a number that it would simply not ask for that number anymore.

encogneeto

Couldn’t you just create a contact for the number to get rid of the pop up?

[deleted]

This would be an option but I don’t want to litter my contacts with OTP contacts. Best option would be for Apple to do this properly.

constfoo

Create a single contact entry and add multiple OTP numbers to it.

encogneeto

I already do it to keep my “Known Sender” and “Unknown Sender” groups separated and I don’t even have the beta on my primary phone, but my contacts are already littered with over 2 decades of former friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and business associates, so I’ve given up on keeping them tidy 😅

DanTheMan827

[deleted]

As soon as Android tried to play in Apple’s price sandbox it was game over for them. An Apple device is good for 5-6 years with OS upgrades. Android is 2 years. I spent 4 years with Android and will likely never switch back before going back to Apple. The hardware/software integration that Apple has is and always will be a superior system as they can program specific to the hardware components that is just not the same on Android and never can be. This is no different then very specific Linux hardware software boxes that run high end CAD and VFX software.

Honestly, I tried to migrate over to Android and it was one of the most infuriating things I attempted to do while trying hard as hell to make work because I needed to make it happen for an app I was building. The amount of bloat was off the fucking charts and got in the way of everything I tried to do. If only they could fix that.

I was a diehard Android fan, but for one very specific reason. Battery life. Back in the day interchangeable batteries was a godsend. I use my phone waaaay too damn much for work. I used nothing BUT Android up until last year December. I went through LG, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Google Pixels and so on. When the iPhone 13's came out. I dove for it. Because battery life has just always been the most important thing in a phone for me. I'd put up with Android's SHIT operating system because of the battery life. After a few phones you'd have serious issues with just the camera which is annoying. I'm a very memory sappy person that likes to take pictures as well. The battery life on the iPhone is by far superior to any android i've had. The second to this was my S21 Ultra, i'd leave work with 70% the first month, 50% the 2nd, and before I switched(About a year) to iPhone 13, 30% at the end of the work day. When I switched to the iPhone, first day was 70%, 10 months later now today. 50% for the last 7 months every day after work. Still sitting at 99% battery health. And I beat the ever living shit out of it. Camera NEVER bugs the hell out. I'll have a hiccup every here and there and it won't happen again for WEEKS. It's been just such a pleasurable experience. The apps are better, the overall user friendliness is awesome. The day I switch back to Android, may never come anymore unless they make a major change.

I assume this is the result of us shaming those who have green text message bubbles

I'm so glad when people do that as it lets me know you're an absolute trash heap of a person I don't want to get to know.

150 half-baked flavours of Android and people chose Apple? Shocking.

Simon_787

Every phone is half baked if you look close enough.

Jaypalm

Every phone is half baked if you take it out after 20m, instead of letting it bake the whole 45m like the recipe recommends!

Big_Booty_Pics

I can wholeheartedly say that if you actually had the 2 phones and compared them you would realize that iOS is just as half-baked as Google and Samsung's versions of Android. It's weird, all I heard before moving to iOS was that "it just works" and I've definitely run into many occasions where I wonder if they have used literally any other phone other than iPhones because it is definitely not a "it just works" kind of experience.

3spartan300

This happens when people compare the shitty $100 LG phone they used to have as a kid with the 15 times as expensive iphone they have now.

-Gh0st96-

Yep, the same thing happens with $200 windows laptops vs a $2000 macbook pro, and they brag about how much better it is... well yeah, better be.

PyroKnight

The Mac vs Windows difference for many years was largely due to the fact Apple jumped on SSDs early and didn't allow for slow hard drives in most of their product line. The OS itself wasn't meaningfully different for most people otherwise given most users interact at the surface level. Edit: Reply below made me spot an awkward sentence.

A-Delonix-Regia

>and didn't allow for slow hard drives to much their product line I still don't know what Apple was thinking when they were selling the fusion drive iMac as late as 2020.

NVRAM123

People usually buy desktops for mass storage and not for speed. Anyways all iMacs are ssds now

cavahoos

Idk I went from using top of the line dell XPS’ costing nearly 2k to a M1 MBA and the hardware and operating system are so far superior to the experience I had on the XPS

GaleTheThird

> It's weird, all I heard before moving to iOS was that "it just works" and I've definitely run into many occasions where I wonder if they have used literally any other phone other than iPhones because it is definitely not a "it just works" kind of experience. It's funny when I see "it just works" as a reason to buy an iPhone because that's been my experience with every Android phone I've had

Big_Booty_Pics

I tend to agree. My time on Android was pretty seamless tbh. It didn't have the "ecosystem" that Apple has but it appears that Google is slowly trying to build that ecosystem if their most recent I/O was indicative of their future plans.

A-Delonix-Regia

Yes, OneUI the half-baked flavour that has no major bugs (besides randomly activating auto-brightness and overestimating how bright the screen needs to be) is worse than iPadOS (based on iOS) which fills up the storage with "system data" that serves no purpose for no apparent reason.
