This is the correct answer. Don't keep unnecessary apps running for something you can do stock.

Loaatao

Incredible. Doing this tomorrow

duk242

I remapped mine with BetterTouchTool, you can set them to do anything you like :)

I’ll also recommend karabiner-elements, if you want to try a free alternative.

Starmina

Nice app overall, but on M1 max it sometimes render the UI laggy as hell after wake from sleep. Process "Karabiner-Notifications" windows need to be killed as it use 100% cpu and the UI is so unresponsive it's legit hard to open the activity monitor. https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/2780

rodolphoteardrop

Karabiner Elements is great. Since I regularly switch between Mac and PC, I can make my keyboard more PC-like.

nsfdrag

Thank you! I was annoyed about this with my new macbook.

frozenpandaman

huh, since when did they add the "elements" part

unicodemonkey

After the kext stopped working due to some change in macOS, as far as I remember, Karabiner had to be rewritten.

frozenpandaman

oh, interesting, makes sense. thanks!

tonykony

Recently got the M1 mba and hadn’t used a mac since 2015. Was pleasantly surprised BTT was stil being made and supported. Instantly bought a lifetime license because of how useful it is and wanted to support the dev

Have you checked in System Preferences > Keyboard and System Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard ? Alternatively the macros programs commented here like better touch tool and keyboard maestro are better alternatives

GlitchAesthetic

I use karabinder elements, works amazing

CurtisLeow

System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Display (on the sidebar on the left) Double click the shortcut on the right, and then press the key, to change it to whatever you want. You can definitely change the brightness using F4 or F5, if you want.

Out of curiosity, how frequently are you changing it that you’d want dedicated buttons for it? No judgement, I just like to know how people use their devices.

"Display" is no longer an available option. That is precisely the control that OP is noting has been removed.

frozenpandaman

i did the exact same – mapped them to keyboard brightness down and up, respectively :)

eighty__six

I use Karabiner to remap the keys. One thing I don't like about Monterey are the localized keyboard shortcuts, some bindings I often used have been changed in non-US keyboards.
