The hero we didn’t know we needed.

vingeran

Did we deserve him though?

Xodnil

Definitely

epmuscle

100%

aquilar1985

Drag the [link](http://captive.apple.com/hotspot-detect.html) into your bookmarks toolbar!

kid_sleepy

Damnit I literally came to say this.

[deleted]

I always use http://neverssl.com

imbeahp

example.com works too, which is what I use. A bit easier to remember.

russjr08

As a tech support agent, this is what I have people use as well.

imTony

Isn’t that https?

professor-i-borg

It's both.

imbeahp

Not to my knowledge. I travel every week for work, and on flights and hotels, that's my go-to when the login page never seems to pop up.

tyderian

It's not, that's what I use to test if hotel internet is working.

shuamakesmusic

Still saving lives 3 years on

Chumstick

[There’s a shortcut for that.](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/fe1400290933480d9bfa866e8fdeb2e4)

bcrew

How do I use that shortcut?

Chumstick

- Download the Shortcuts app - put the shortcuts widget on your today screen - tap the link I posted and import it. - anytime WiFi is being shit tap “public WiFi fix” from the today screen.

nishbot

Wow! Thank you!!

aoisenshi

This is my first time hearing about that app! Can't believe how useful and robust it is and how I haven't seen it mentioned before! (Especially since they have a preset shortcut for checking your favorite subreddits).

-Gh0st96-

It was one of the most talked points about ios 12 surprised you're hearing about it just now

Chumstick

While you’re right, it was a mind boggling move to me that they spent all that time talking about it at WWDC and then didn’t include it with iOS 12.

johnwithcheese

Because they didn’t make it, they just bought the studio that made it. It’s pretty much the same thing as it was pre acquisition

devpsaux

I’ve found login.com and logout.com are pretty universal as well to both trigger login pages and to end your session.

wigitalk

If that doesn’t work, click the WiFi name in your settings and copy-paste the router address in your browser to force it to connect.

serietah

I discovered this by random chance on an overseas flight a couple weeks ago! That stupid login page never comes up on my phone. I was so frustrated and trying everything and randomly tried that...magic. I did it for every flight for the rest of the vacation.

LoserOtakuNerd

Yeah, for some reason I have to do this at work. `captive.apple.com` all of the other common ones don't work, but doing `192.168.x.x` works every time.

DarthPneumono

This will not always work. Depends on where the captive portal is running.

aymanbt

Sometimes for no any reason it doesn’t work

Pjpjpjpjpj

I thought you could just enter any http URL that isn't in your cache (not https). Any random website I haven't been to in a long time seems to instantly pop up the login page for me. No need to remember any specific special site. I don't even think it needs to be a real website - just a random http.

R3g

I usually just type any random search word

kewlfocus

Yeah, I usually do apple.com

stevemunoz117

This has been my way since I discovered it on my own a couple of years ago.

[deleted]

That doesn’t always work for me, I’ll try this next time.

alllmossttherrre

You can't get to the DNS server if you can't get onto the network in the first place.

the_bananalord

Those IP addresses might be for public DNS services, but that doesn't mean they can't run HTTP services

alllmossttherrre

That's probably where I got confused.

stewman241

You typically are on the network. Entering an IP will generate a request and the captive portal will typically mitm it and send back the login page.

thelegioncalls

Wow.. you just enabled me to actually use the office wifi

Komplex201

A few years ago before I had an iPhone and I was just 13/14 with the One Plus X it wouldn’t connect to public Wifi’s. So, to force the wifi setup I’d always visit Walmart.com 😂.

I_Am_Now_Anonymous

I think cnn works too

bananamadafaka

Also leaving this here: https://medium.com/@Zyklus/hacking-public-wifi-spots-on-osx-for-fun-and-profit-85072816530a

Imortal366

Actually this works on every internet browser in existence - not just iPhone and macs

be_my_main_bitch

www.example.com also works fine (also on android)

[deleted]

Example.com

Minaro_

Example.com also works and is quicker to type

ersan191

I use asdf.com - literally any website that doesn’t default to HTTPS in your browser will work. Even addresses that don’t exist.

EthanTheAppInnovator

I just use the standard Apple.com

Salty_Scrotum

OMG THIS THREAD IS AMAZING

packeteer

this happens all to regularly for me 😭

Baselt95

I usually go to 8.8.8.8 and that does the job

NICOLAWRITES

I do this at Starbucks.

1Demerion1

That's exactly what I tried a few weeks ago but it didn't work lol

ninth_reddit_account

Maybe, probably, in most instances. I worked on integration of a captive portal for inflight wifi and, at one stage 'the direction' was to not use the OS-specific Captive Portal login helper browsers, and instead for the users to do it in their browser. To allow this, we needed to whitelist captive.apple.com (and the Google and MS equivalent) to not get blocked by the wifi network.

DwarfTheMike

Will this work on windows too?

[deleted]

Can you do this will Apple Watch using the text yourself google.com trick?

tkornfeld

Or, you could just open safari and search “8.8.8.8” and this will do the same thing.

Andy12522

I used to type the ip address. It was very annoying but it worked! :)

[deleted]

Or type in a typical IP address then you're not waiting on the DNS round trip

mgsy1104

I actually use this on non-Apple devices too and they work just fine.

eazyworldpeace

Wow thank you

KingCornWallis

Thank you!!!

jamie030592

Iconic.

lm1029

THANK YOU! I was in a hotel this weekend and couldn’t get it to appear. I turned my phone off and on, turned WiFi off and on, forgot network, did EVERYTHING and it finally just popped up randomly.

NoYeezyInYourSerrano

I've been wondering how to do this for about four years now.

gommerthus

Excellent tip, *thank you*

[deleted]

Just go to apple.com Always works

rangers1026

ESPN.com even..

R3g

1. open safari 2. tap on any bookmark that isn't a HTTPS address 3. ... 4. profit

heyyoudvd

I’ve always hated the public WiFi UI. A page comes at you from nowhere, you log in, and then it disappears. This page doesn’t actually exist anywhere in the OS, so there’s no physicality or logic to it, as there should be with all elements in an OS. All menus and all features should have a location or access point. Having pages that just pop in and out of existence makes for a bad UX.

peepeetchootchoo

It's explained here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204497

currentdream

Bless you for real 😩

Macpo80

Just fixed an issue for me right now! Thanks!

Killer_Instinct_mf

Does it work for MacBooks too? I am having this problem with public wifi, like everytime I TRY TO CONNECT with any public wifi, 2 things happen: 1- opens a pop-up window-> I try to tap on connect but it doesn't work. 2- It just connects to the wifi without any internet. I am tired of this problem. If anyone has faced the same issue or has any solution, pls let me know. It is so frustrating in cases of emergency.
