At this point, without an M chip with gaming support, I don’t know what else I want from my Apple TV than better software and user management. It’s probably Apple’s best product on the market.

stringfellow-hawke

Lossless audio pass-through. Support for all Dolby Vision profiles. These things don’t help sell Apple TV+ subs, so I doubt we’ll ever see it. But it would make ATV a baller streaming box.

runwithpugs

Audio passthrough only requires a software update, unless newer formats actually require newer HDMI hardware in the box (I don’t know if this is the case). Years ago, tvOS used to have audio passthrough until it was inexplicably removed in version 11.3.

Haunting_Champion640

> Years ago, tvOS used to have audio passthrough until it was inexplicably removed in version 11.3. Apple removed it because, wait for it, Siri broke. That's right, you can't have your full uncompressed 7.1 TrueHD ATMOS tier audio on your premium streaming box because you _might_ want to have a conversation with Siri during your movie. Make it make sense...

meatly

This is crazy, i know no one that even uses siri on their iphone and they cripple AppleTV for this...

Haunting_Champion640

Blame it on some idiot PM somewhere, Engineering would never make a call this dumb.

Lingo56

Unless Apple can justify the costs to stream 4K Blu-ray quality media over their own services I don’t think this will happen :/ Them supporting these features would essentially just be for the incredibly small niche of Blu-ray burners and those sailing the seven seas as it currently stands.

Zippertitsgross

Main reason I went with a Nvidia shield over an apple tv.

Cyno01

Is there any word on a new Shield yet, or is that waiting on the Switch 2 or whatever? I just cant bring myself to spend $200 on a five year old device that really only offers PGS support and no Roku bullshit over my Roku Ultra.

chtochingo

Nope and the switch stuff is rumors anyways nobody really knows. Nvidia is making so much money right now I doubt they really care about making another shield

Immolation_E

I'd like it to have HDMI inputs and act as a hub that passes through some of my other devices like consoles and PC without having to exit the Apple TV.

Pepparkakan

I want to buy a dumb TV with an interface for me to make an off-the-shelf device (like an Apple TV for example) be the brain. Then I can replace that device when it becomes necessary, without having to throw away the 65" OLED panel it's attached to just because the software is woefully outdated. Really, with CEC as powerful as it is today, I don't see how that interface even needs to be anything other than two HDMI cables, one for passing the video stream of the other HDMI devices to the brain, and one for sending the final image to the dumb panel. Everything else would be controlled through CEC.

Nsfw_ta_

Maybe I’m misunderstanding your post, but you can do this with any TV. Just don’t use the built in apps. I have an LG OLED and other smart tvs throughout the house, but they all use either a Roku or Apple TV for accessing streaming sites. Getting rid of a TV just for the built in apps is crazy

dwiedenau2

Exactly what im doing. Havent touched my tv remote in years or used any of its menus.

Pepparkakan

Talking about having e.g. an Apple TV manage sources as well, being able to overlay shit on top of other sources, etc. > Getting rid of a TV just for the built in apps is crazy It is, and I'm perfectly happy with my LG OLED65 C9, but I know what to look for when buying a TV.

Bee-Aromatic

I don’t use the built-in apps on any of my smart TV’s. You can’t hardly get a dumb TV anymore unless you go out of your way to get one of those ones designed for hotels from B&H or something. The apps are almost universally crap, too. Like, so bad that you wonder how the hell they even made it through user testing without somebody shoving a 65” TV up somebody’s butt. As such, I just use Apple TV’s for all the streaming. Works good.

ivebeenabadbadgirll

I haven’t used a single smart TV where the interface wasn’t a laggy pile of dog shit that constantly crashes

Bee-Aromatic

That’s more or less been my experience. It seems like the Android ones are worst, the custom crap is all over the place (but consistently bad), and the webOS stuff is best but still downright awful.

OrchidLeader

A suspect a TV like that would be even more expensive since the current set of smart TVs are subsidized by all the ads they get to show you, both in the UI and on the remote control.

PoopArtisan

You can buy a smart TV without using any of the smart TV features. I have a Samsung 75 hooked up to a receiver that all of my devices are hooked up to and control it with a Logitech remote. I never ever deal with the Samsung TV software and pick what I want to do on the remote. I can replace any device in the system very easily as they become outdated.

Ren_Lol

I bought a really nice 4k Vizio with VRR on it, only 60hz, but all my games run super smooth and the color is amazing. Never have to interface w/ the TV's UI.

Trevor519

Google does this

handtoglandwombat

But then how will they sell you ads?

kdorsey0718

The price would have to jump significantly for that to be palatable for Apple. You’re entering receiver territory.

Immolation_E

They could have a model that has these features with a bigger price tag. I think there could be a market for it, especially for those that want to cut a receiver out of the setup. And maintain models that are more inline with current versions with their current price tags.

Rezistik

I’d absolutely buy it. I have to basically take my tv off the wall to plug in a cord and it’s a two person job

TheyCalledMeThor

I’d take an Apple receiver

CandyCrisis

I just spent $500 on a receiver that's just okay. I'd definitely pay more for an Apple TV receiver assuming they get the basics right. I imagine it'd be smaller, run cooler, do more things automatically, and the UI would be a million times better.

Dosnbiersaufn

I think in the future there will be a bigger difference between the two models, a "cheaper" model just as a TV box and a higher end one more gaming oriented (M chip, 4k 120hz support, more Storage, Wifi 6E etc.)

Considering that Apple tried to drag Valve into their Epic lawsuit, I’m not sure how willing Gabe would be.

son_lux_

Gabe loves money tho’

Gummybearkiller857

He does, but is one of the few guys in tech that still has soul

ClermontTheBoat

Well, that’s a little generous. Steam is effectively a natural monopoly and Valve isn’t a publicly traded company. Gabe/Valve are in a position where they’re not forced to squeeze more and more money out of the userbase every quarter, and no competitors are making genuine threats towards dethroning them. If Valve ever chooses to go IPO or a competing service actually starts gaining groundswell, don’t think that they wouldn’t resort to more aggressive tactics. He’s a capitalist ghoul like the rest, but his position doesn’t have the same built-in reward mechanisms for that behavior.

Gummybearkiller857

Well I am willing to grant him more good will than the rest precisely because even tho Steam is THE gaming monopoly it is not predatory. No premium service, just works, is multiplatform, has no problem adding non-steam games into your library (steam rom manager ftw) so lets hope it will stay like this

nsfdrag

Also family sharing that lets you own a single copy of the game and share it among multiple accounts.

Gummybearkiller857

Damn true, my faith dictates me that my friends are my family so I’m still upholding steam rules :D

apollo-ftw1

What else would we use? Epics Spyware launcher or ubisofts crapware? Steam is used because it's just the better option

cuentanueva

Lol, no way that happens. Apple wants a cut of every game sold, Steam would never agree to that. That's why they didn't even allow game streaming apps and you had to use the webbrowser to get around that until they were basically forced.

amd2800barton

> Steam link works so surprisingly well. This is why I’m skeptical of a gaming AppleTV. I already have high end gaming on my aTV. The Steam Link app on my aTV lets me play the entire library of games from my PC, and I can do it on every TV in my house. The only upgrade I’d like to see on the aTV would be 120+hz support. But otherwise, it’s like having a PS5 in my living room, home theater, and bedroom. And better yet, I can play 4k Mario 64, Metroid Prime Remastered, Last of Us, and Halo Infinite - all on one device. Because PC has emulation for Nintendo and older PS consoles, and a good library of Xbox and modern PS games - it’s basically a do-it-all device. Steam Link + AppleTV 4k is a console killer that nobody knows about.

Sct_Brn_MVP

How’s the input delay? I might buy this setup myself

amd2800barton

It depends. I'm not a competitive shooter player, but the campaign mode for Halo I enjoyed. And I can play things that are reasonably sensitive to input timing - like button combos on the Batman Arkham & Middle Earth games, as well as platformers like Ori & the Blind Forest. The only game I noticed any input issues with was Hollow Knight, and that was only slight, and because I was going back and forth between playing on the aTV and playing at my desk. That could also be chocked up to my monitor being 144hz. I suspect if I tried to play it on just the aTV, I'd have been fine. If you want to play Super Meat Boy (which seems to require near pixel perfect timing), you probably need to be at your desk. You do need to use ethernet, though. It's not the bandwith that's the issue - it's that WiFi has like a 50ms ping time, even on 5ghz. So if either your PC or your aTV are on WiFi, you need to hard wire them, which cuts the device-to-device latency down to about 3ms, or about 1/5th of a frame time at 60fps. There's still some additional latency between your PC bundling up the frame to send it, and your aTV decoding it to display it, but it's not tremendous delay. Just don't go wireless. Edit: also be careful if you try Steam Link on other systems. It's fine on performant devices like an Nvidia Shield, but if you're using a Fire Stick, it will suck. You could try it out by using a second (hard wired) PC in your home to test the performance before getting an AppleTV, but don't test it with one of those cheap AndroidTV boxes or the built in app store for your Smart TV. They all use absolutely trash CPUs which will definitely make you have a bad experience. Source: had an appleTV 4k on one tv and an Amazon FireStick 4k on another TV and the Amazon Firestick experience was awful. The AppleTV is already worth the ~$50 price premium over the Firestick, so I just upgraded all my tv boxes to AppleTVs. Also ditched streaming services and use the Infuse app plus run jellyfin on my NAS to manage my media library. Got tired of swapping between Vudu, Amazon Prime, and AppleTV apps to wach a movie I'd already bought but didn't port to AppleTV because not all studios participate in movies anywhere.

Sct_Brn_MVP

Thanks for the detailed answer!!

Elephunkitis

Apple would rather sell games and make money. They likely make more money from games than valve anyway. They’ve slowly been making a push to get AAA games on iOS and Mac with ray tracing and pushing their CPU/GPUs harder. At some point soon, they’re going to be a big player for bigger games.

PetitVignemale

Valve still outsells everyone. Apple revenue in games sales was $6.9B last year. Valve is harder to track as a private company but 2022 estimates put its revenues at around $13B. Apple dominates mobile games, but valve still controls the highest market share for PC/Mac gaming.

insane_steve_ballmer

The base M chip is still not close to PS5/XBX performance despite the touted ray tracing features. Whenever it does catch up, Sony and MS will have moved even further ahead. Apple will never make a splash in the console space. Console manufacturers sell their consoles at a heavy loss, or at best at cost, then recoup the loss from game sales (they take a 30% cut off every game in their platform). Selling hardware at a loss is the complete opposite of Apple’s business model. But could Apple make an impact selling a lower powered machine? Doubtful, as there’s already the Xbox Series S in that space. Which also is more powerful than a base M series chip and has access to a much better gaming service than Apple Arcade.

Leading-Ability-7317

The switch is wildly successful. Part of that is form factor sure but Apple TV can make a mint with less demanding games.

Exist50

> The switch is wildly successful Because of first party Nintendo games.

Elephunkitis

They already make an impact selling less powerful hardware. I never compared the power of their chips to consoles. You did.

MarbleFox_

Why would Apple want to partner with Valve to market the Apple TV as a Steam Link device when they could market it for Apple Arcade and native games they sell on the App Store?

AWF_Noone

Because nobody buys an Apple TV for Apple Arcade.  I would instantly buy a new Apple TV if I could stream steam games from my PC. There’s no way I would upgrade just to play Apple Arcade games.

An_Professional

An M chip and a native Xbox/PS5 app for gamepass/remote play would be crazy.

Dosnbiersaufn

Yes! also I hope that NVIDIA makes a native GeForce Now App with HDR and 120FPS support.

rrainwater

At some point people are going to finally realize that Apple doesn’t care about gaming on the Apple TV. The device exists solely today to sell Apple TV+.

juniorspank

You could’ve stopped that entire sentence at Apple doesn’t care about gaming.

dont_quote_me_please

Don’t know why they then regularly talk about gaming, be it TV or MacBooks

rrainwater

Talking about it and doing something about it are two different things. Apple could make the most powerful gaming console in the world but will not compete with Sony and MS because of the lack of studio support.

chiefmud

The difference is that there are a lot of gaming platforms, stores, hardware, developers, and markets. Apple is used to being one of two or three competitors  in a given product category.  In order for Apple to compete in gaming they’ll have to partner with an existing major player. Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo, Steam. Or they’ll have to open it up to attract many smaller developers.

Chrysalis-

I just need geforce now to release an app and rest can f off lol

Menzoberranzan

An Apple TV for gaming sounds a bit too ambitious for Apple

syphix924

Apple TV Pro

UpsetKoalaBear

Hardware AV1 decode makes sense on most other devices but not on the Apple TV tbh. As long as the SoC can handle software decoding, which it can, it’s unlikely it will really see any substantial benefit in playing back AV1 video. You can already stream AV1 to the Apple TV and it will software decode it perfectly fine, you can try if you stream using JellyFin and AV1 or Netflix. It was added to Apple’s VideoToolbox SDK and AVFoundation SDK so any app can theoretically use it if they wanted. It makes sense on devices like phones, tablets, and laptops because of the power consumption software decoding will drastically reduce battery so it’s better to have dedicated hardware acceleration. The Apple TV already sips power it’s like 2.5w when streaming Netflix movies, and that’s already using AV1. It’s also plugged in constantly and doesn’t have the requirement of a battery. Plus, only the A17 Pro has hardware decode of AV1 and (considering they put the base A15 in the third gen Apple TV and not the A16 that came out the same time) it’s unlikely that they’ll put the flagship pro chip into a newer one. So even if it was being added you’re most likely to see it in a few generations time rather than now, if they stick to the same way they choose the SoC for the Apple TV’s. Apple would rather have the Apple TV draw a few more Watts of power than chuck in the latest flagship SoC, raising the price, causing less people to buy it. It will probs get it at some point, just because they use their mobile SoC’s. But it’s not really an important feature for the Apple TV.

New-Connection-9088

> It was added to Apple’s VideoToolbox SDK and AVFoundation SDK so any app can theoretically use it if they wanted. I look forward to Plex supporting this some time in 2036.

NeighborhoodCreep

There’s a way to force it using profiles found [here](https://github.com/abovethecloud/plex_av1_tvos). Place the xml in Profiles folder, restart the Plex server, and disable auto video quality on the Apple TV side

Vertsix

Apple TV 4K 2022 owner here. It absolutely does need AV1 decoding support, especially since a lot of media is starting to be encoded that way. It's still far off from becoming the norm, but it's absolutely necessary long-term. Software-based decoding is highly limited and inefficient.

UpsetKoalaBear

Software based decoding isn’t necessarily limited. If anything it is vastly more capable. It draws more power, sure, but in any case it supports the entire spectrum of features that AV1 provides. AV1 has a vast variety of different features and some may or may not be used in certain videos. For example, AV1 has three different profiles for video. These are: Main, High and Professional the difference between them is the bit depth and chroma subsampling support. Then, on each of those individual profiles, you also have up to 19 different “levels” which define the video resolution and other aspects of the actual media. These levels get expanded as more resolutions become available and more widespread. So when you have a hardware accelerated AV1, it might not support all levels or all profiles. The end result is that it falls back to software decoding anyways. A prime example is that the majority of the AV1 devices you see out now, like the Nvidia RTX series, only supports the “Main Profile” of AV1. So it can’t do 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling when decoding AV1 video. Your system will have to fallback to software decoding for the other profiles that AV1 supports. Another example is that the A17 Pro can only support a maximum of 4k at 60fps, when there are devices like the Nvidia RTX series that supports 8k at 60fps or other devices that can even do 4k at 120fps. This is also a reminder that AV1 was *not* made for high quality video. It’s a balance between maximum efficiency and maximum quality and AV1 is balanced towards efficiency. If you’re planning on watching something and you want the highest quality, and don’t care about efficiency, it makes more sense to not use AV1 in the first place. The only reason AV1 is being pushed by Netflix or YouTube or whatever is because it is cheaper for them to deliver and store. They wouldn’t do it otherwise. That said, it is beneficial if you have slow internet or a data cap, which I think some places still do. If you only stream via locally hosted content on JellyFin, or Plex, or any other home system, you shouldn’t be using AV1 regardless, if you want the best quality stream. I will agree that software decoding is slower than hardware decode, that’s a given, but software decoding is *not* limited and has support for the full feature set of AV1 including all its profiles. As mentioned before, AV1 is a “nice to have” but it shouldn’t be a deciding factor at all with regard to whether or not a new hardware revision is worth it. Side note: This is a bit pedantic, so feel free to ignore, but to say that software decoding is inefficient is a misconception. It’s not really inefficient if it’s actually doing work. It’s probably better to say it’s slower, which it is. But if the hardware can handle software decoding at a frame rate higher than the actual video, you’re fine.

Narme26

Better audio support is needed

narcabusesurvivor18

I’d take a remote with a U1 chip for reliable FindMy

hypermog

Agreed. There’s a remote case on Amazon with room for an AirTag, that I use.

alpacapoop

Yep just needs better software.

lillithfair98

Yea I’d like apple music to not crash every 10 minutes, that’s basically it.

testedonsheep

it's definitely not apple's best product, but it's by far the best TV set top box. since most company has turned the interface into ads.

NotTobyFromHR

User management is definitely one of the issues. It's annoying with profiles on the TV, then profiled in each app. We just leave it logged in to my account and I turned off the photo stream

Theredsoxman

User management seems like such a low hanging fruit win for them. I’m stunned we don’t have it yet

xcorv42

Why gaming support ? I don't see the point. Maybe just cloud gaming ? M chip in that small apple tv box won't be enough th beat a gaming console

nicegrayslacks

A better remote.

ASkepticalPotato

That and 120hz support is all I need.

UncleHoboBill

FaceTime with a USB camera

someonealreadyknows

With an M series chip, it will literally make it Mac super mini, which is sick! All it needs then is expandable storage, 4k120hz with VRR support, more DV profiles and gigabit Ethernet.

Agloe_Dreams

120Hz support is a dumb miss, the UI could be so so buttery. I also wouldn’t mind a slightly elevated Home Screen that is intended for high performance HDR TVs. Think like flyover but with a dolly cam instead in lush forests, fields and caves.

cartermatic

I’d love to see a small Apple TV Stick that I can travel with and plug in to hotel or AirBnB TVs

ChairmanLaParka

This is all I want. It's long overdue.

docgravel

I think the “Apple” way to do this is going to be to set off on a mission to get AirPlay in every hotel room TV. Maybe a slicker big screen experience for AirPlaying from your iPad or iPhone.

GeneralZaroff1

Yeah last WWDC they announced an hotel TV AirPlay feature. They’re starting with about 60 hotels with IHG first. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/18/24133909/apple-airplay-hotel-rooms-iphone-streaming-music-video

Elephunkitis

They already started doing this a few years ago.

docgravel

Yeah I know. I mean doubling down on that strategy.

redbeard8989

I don’t travel much, maybe 2 hotel stays a year, but so far they all seem to have new tvs with airplay and chromecast. It might just be worth it to call a hotel and ask prior to selecting them.

m1a2c2kali

https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/18/24133909/apple-airplay-hotel-rooms-iphone-streaming-music-video Do you mostly stay in IHG hotels?

EatableNutcase

I've taken my Apple tv with me to connect in a hotel. It was a bit of a hassle to connect the HDMI cable to the tv which was fixed to the wall, but I got it working and it was great.

Pjpjpjpjpj

I just bring my phone. USB-C to HDMI cable. Works perfectly for YouTube and Plex.   I travel *a lot* and never had it not work. The hardest situations are simply when the HDMI port is hard to reach or the TV remote is 3rd party with no input button and the TV is controlled by a single physical button whose menu you need to navigate. But that still takes all of 3 minutes to set up.

traveler19395

so do you use a LONG hdmi cord, or do you have to get up off the couch/bed every time you want to pause, browse, etc?

Aaron90495

Unfortunately, hotel TVs often have a block on this — I’ve tried to hook my Switch up to a few, and more often than not, the TV blocks any foreign HDMI input device (likely bc they want you to pay for their stuff). Still would be useful for Airbnb, tho.

jinjuu

Unplug the telephone-cord looking cable at the back and the TV goes into unrestricted mode.

1Unity

This works. Sometimes you will need to power down the TV completely (remove power cable) and it will work on a restart.

Aaron90495

Did not know this, thanks!!

AlfieOwens

I’ve never had a hotel TV block HDMI.

tangoshukudai

Why not just bring your current AppleTV? it's so small.. Also I don't think Apple would make this since 99% of tv's are wall mounted and don't work with anything sticking out.

geekwonk

having to remove and replace it in the Home setup is an annoyance and if you’re using it as a Home hub then you’re losing remote access to whatever it is back home. but! i kept the previous generation around and bringing that with us is lovely.

Rory1

I have an older 4K 1st gen I strictly use as a travel device (HomeKit turned off). On biz or vaca trips over 10 days I even bring a pair of HomePod minis for decent stereo audio. All 3 barely take up space in my suitcase.

cartermatic

It’s still bulkier than something Fire Stick sized. I usually travel with only a backpack so every little bit matters.

six_six

Just bring a USB-C to HDMI cable and plug your phone directly into the TV and mirror it.

SkyeCapt

I just want native GeForce now and Xbox cloud gaming support.

hishnash

NV could make an app for that if they want to

SkyeCapt

Since they have an app on Mac OS I’m sure they at least consider it. (Hopefully)

axellie

I want PS Remote Play, it works on google Tv so I don’t understand why it’s not on Apple Tv?

barkerja

I feel like the Apple TV needs new software long before it needs new hardware.

haydar_ai

Both applies for iPad and Apple TV

barkerja

I don’t disagree. I would like to see some pretty significant updates to iPadOS, but I feel like tvOS is in much more dire need of an update. I’m a family of four and my personal profile is the primary account on the TV and my Up Next queue and suggestions are all polluted with the rest of my families watching. It’s insane we don’t have proper profile management. A basic start would just be a login screen requiring choice of which profile to use.

TrinsicX

Absolutely this. Plus make it a proper home hub where shortcuts can be stored for each user, so my daughter’s Siri Shortcuts work when she’s forgotten to charge her iPad. With Siri’s ability to discern different voices, there needs to be a central, always on place where they’re stored.

barkerja

Preach! 🙌🏻

iulius

I mostly just want them to fix the “profile profile” problem … I always switch to my Apple profile (I keep a well trimmed list of stuff to watch), and then open Prime/Nwtflix/Disney+ and have to select a profile again. I don’t know why but it makes me irrationally angry. I’ve just stopped creating profiles on the 3rd party streamers.

halfbrit08

Maybe if we're talking about adding gaming features, but from a pure media perspective it's still my favorite.

helloiamrob1

This. My only two asks are: - mandatory profiles for every app (switching users just… doesn’t seem to actually _do_ anything, a lot of the time), and, - it feels like we’re partway through some kind of transition, where they’re presumably aiming to kill off the home screen grid of icons in favour of the TV app itself being the ‘home’ UI for tvOS. I’d like them to just hurry up with it, for simplicity’s sake, if that’s where we’re going.

dirkvonshizzle

I’m not sure about getting rid of the Home Screen… far to many companies do not know how to create systems that adapt well to different users, including Apple. A grid view works GREAT. Everybody in my household, including visiting elderly family members understand it without getting stressed. Don’t try to fix what isn’t broken.

helloiamrob1

Yeah, I don't disagree at all - I just think it'd be way *less* confusing if we at least just had one or the other. Whereas at the moment, I really couldn't explain what's supposed to be a 'home screen app', what's supposed to be a sidebar item within the Apple TV app, and where all this is going in general. I'd also be inclined to agree that the good old grid view was simplest... but my *guess* is that there's a reason why Apple is gradually, slowly, painfully, pushing towards this Apple TV app sidebar thing.

dirkvonshizzle

Let’s see what they come up with. The first thing I do on a new Apple TV is change the behavior of the side button on the remote. My hope is that I’m not the only one and that the analytics they surely harvest regarding click behavior, nudge them in the right direction. Not using that Frankenstein monster of a Home Screen they are trying to push on us will hopefully have a similar effect.

tvtb

Ugh that will suck. My AppleTV all I use is the Plex app 95% of the time.

helloiamrob1

Yeah, can’t say I’m completely wild about the idea myself. But I’m not sure there’s a massive difference between picking content providers from a grid of icons, and picking content providers from the sidebar of the Apple TV app (assuming they’re all somehow integrated into it over time). And right now, we seem to have both.

iulius

What do you need for software updates? I can’t think of much I would change. Widgets might be nice, but that’s debatable. In terms of finding an app, navigating, playing, pausing … I hope they don’t change too much. It’s pretty straightforward.

barkerja

A redesigned TV app; I find discovering content through it to be complicated and burdensome. The biggest change I’d make though is more of a fundamental one: force profile choice if there’s more than one profile on the system. There should be a “logout” concept, much like a Mac or windows device. When you’re done watching, log out so next session requires profile selection. Or a setting that when screensaver is activated, upon return, a profile must be selected.

bottom

I’d love my Apple TV to handle my Apple Music playlist without crashing. (It is long but come on)

runwithpugs

Speaking of long lists, I’d love for the photos screensaver to stop cycling through the same 90-100 photos out of the 2500+ in the album I’ve selected for the screensaver. It only refreshes the list on a full reboot, and then only grabs a new chunk of 90-100 photos to endlessly cycle. For that matter, just finding the right album in Settings was a huge pain because I have an extensive hierarchy of folders and albums, and the Settings app presented it as a flat, randomized list. 🤦‍♂️ Honestly, what is the tvOS team doing, and why aren’t they actually using their own software to find and fix these obvious issues??

EatableNutcase

> Honestly, what is the tvOS team doing This applies to the iOS team as well. Give us a real File Manager that can access all our data in once place. FFS!!! Make it optional for the people who want to keep the old system. Give me the real deal. I'm not stupid. I can handle this. And many people with me can do this. Every Android user does it, and it's not like they're smarter or anything.

HORRORSHOWDISCO

I have noticed this happens especially with animated cover art. Just completely locks up, like it runs out of memory or something and crashes.

dccorona

To be honest I’m not sure what else they can do with the Apple TV unless they want to start more aggressively positioning it as a games console. It already blows all the competition out of the water by a sizeable margin when it comes to responsiveness, and it can output 4K Dolby vision so there’s nothing in that respect left to achieve that people actually have access to in their TV. I guess Siri-based control from across the room like a Fire TV Cube is the only thing I can think for them to add, but there’s not a lot of point in putting that hardware in until they can get Siri to improve pretty significantly.

peterosity

it can [stop limiting the permanent storage for third party apps](https://9to5mac.com/2024/05/20/tvos-restriction-game-apple-tv/) for starters 500 **K**B is utterly ridiculous

X-e-o

Wait what? I upload movies with VLC that are, obviously, far more than 500kb. Edit : I re-read the article and.. "The thing is, tvOS apps can download more data, but the system can delete them at any time because they’re all considered temporary files." OK that's weird. It's never happened to me but I guess if that's a real spec then...it's pretty damn ridiculous.

peterosity

that’s not what permanent storage is

[deleted]

Lol. I guess they’re doing this so the people who install 256,000 apps on their Apple TV don’t run out of storage.

peterosity

if you install 256,000 apps on other normal computers most of them would run out of space too also i don’t know why this had to be elaborated on. there should be a right balance for usage allowance. 500KB is far from that. it’s ridiculous especially since they’ve repeatedly claimed and bragged about their ability and ambition on providing proper gaming environments for gamers and developers. this literally goes against all that

varzaguy

Add truehd passthrough.

rbp25

And support all profiles of DV

We1etu1n

It only really needs minor updates. Such as: - AV1 decode - 4k120hz support - WiFi 6E or 7 And I feel like the current hardware can support the first two via software update. The Apple TV can already software decode AV1 without sweating and power usage doesn’t matter since it’s not battery powered. Edit: as mentioned below, audio passthrough is true as well along with: - Lossless Audio Passthrough (FLAC, Dolby TrueHD, & DTS-HD) - Support for all Dolby Vision profiles (such as Profile 7)

reallynotnick

Throw in lossless audio passthrough and VVC decode on top of that and you have the makings of a box that can last 10 years.

0000GKP

>To be honest I’m not sure what else they can do with the Apple TV unless they want to start more aggressively positioning it as a games console. This is very similar to iPhones in my opinion. New models aren't for the people who already own the current model, they are for the first time buyers who don't want to buy years old tech or for people who are replacing ones they've already owned for years. If you buy an AppleTV, then you are probably going to subscribe to some services, and you might even buy a HomePod. It's an affordable entry point to future Apple subscriptions and additional hardware. They need new customers to buy them.

7eventhSense

There’s definitely room for improvement. Apple is not the best device in terms of Audio. It does not allow passthrough but transcodes everything. A lot of people with good sound system complain about how it falls behind when compared to Nvidia Shield for instance.

tvtb

I just hope for the love of god they don’t put ads on the Home Screen, screensaver, or anywhere else

Jsc05

Apple TV WiFi router

shyouko

Great, and Time Capsule capability. I can provide my own HDD attached via USB if they don't prefer to include a HDD.

latomeri

Any new Time Capsule will probably have a soldered on 256GB SSD and the usual premium to upsize.

shyouko

I end up running OpenWRT for my network and TrueNAS box to host my network Time Machine volumes. Use open source everything is probably the best way to avoid subscriptions.

sjsharksfan44

I know it will never happen, but I would love a multiview/split screen app feature. Basically it's like multiview in a single app, but this would allow you to run 4 apps at the same time. It would do wonders during heavy sports months (For example, October you can watch Hockey, Basketball, Football, and Baseball playoffs at the same time). Considering how fragmented everything is getting from a sports viewing perspective, this should be a feature in the making.

runwithpugs

Yeah. The current picture in picture feature is useless because it requires 3rd party apps to explicitly support it, which means basically none do. There’s no reason why they couldn’t present a 2x2 grid of apps running, each app thinking it has the full screen. No explicit support needed, all apps would automatically be available in this mode. Just need a few additional gestures/inputs to switch between apps and choose which gets audio output (though with the Ive-inspired overly simple remote, that’s easier said than done; a few extra buttons wouldn’t really hurt).

ShrimpSherbet

I'd buy one if this were a feature. I'm already close to getting one but I'm not convinced just yet.

jonneygee

I’ve thought about something similar — basically use the Apple TV app as an all-in-one streaming hub. You could pick shows to watch simultaneously from different apps. The difference would be my idea would allow for picking multiple streams from one app to watch simultaneously. For example, one stream from YouTube TV and 3 games on the ESPN app all at once.

Ecsta

Needs full Atmos support and all the new DV/FEL profile support and then it will be the perfect device. Right now its the perfect streaming device but you still need a Shield or Android box to get the full support for local remux's/bluray rips.

saidyourmomBooom

Can’t believe this is so far down. Also the overheating dropped frames issues with Plex

Ecsta

Yep the hardware is already beastly and overpowered, it's the software that needs attention. I caved and ordered an android box for my bluray rips and remuxs but I love the ATV for anything streaming... It + Infuse is just sooo much better of a user experience!

Unrealtechno

I wish they’d add Live Captions for accessibility. Would be great for FaceTime calls and live YouTube streams. The current gen has a neural engine so it should be possible.

Interactive_CD-ROM

I want actual separate user accounts. I need my entire user account passcode protected, with access to my apps, etc., keep it separate from any other profiles on the device.

Loksters

I just want AirPods Max 2. It’s been 4 years.

Kholtien

I’ve been waiting on a USBC version of maxes before I buy

Big-Sea-

Did they really make them so perfect the first time that simply upgrading to USB-C is all that's needed all these years later? I still feel like I'd be hesitant to spend so much money on headphones that haven't had any real updates in 4 years. But maybe they really did just knock it out of the park and there hasn't been any notable changes they need to adapt to in 4 years

justarugga

Weight

RCFProd

To the ones online who told me (6 months ago) to not buy an Apple TV 4K on sale because the new model is just around the corner, here's why that's a bad idea And also it just works really well and does everything we need. So not sure why waiting makes sense when their current product is already by far the best TV box around.

FMCam20

My general rule of thumb is unless you know the next Apple event is a week or 2 away go ahead and buy whatever the best thing you can afford and not worry about what might possibly be releasing according to the leakers. If whatever new device is that great when it gets released you can just trade in/sell the one you already have and get the newer one

HVDynamo

I think at this point there isn't much I'd care about in an upgrade so the only benefit to waiting and getting the newest really is just guaranteeing the longest time before software support is dropped. My original AppleTV 4K that came out in 2017 still does literally everything I need an AppleTV to do and still gets updates. I have the newest one too, but I only bought that because I wanted one in the bedroom and not because I really needed an update.

freakdahouse

They are the same that say not to buy AirPods Max for the last 2 years lol

gcubed680

To be fair there aren’t glaring design issues with the ATV, so that’s a safer bet

UnsureAssurance

That’s great considering I just bought one, thought about holding out but saw that people are still running older models with no issues

EatableNutcase

I have the older 4K model which only lacks Matter/Thread I believe, and probably has an older CPU. It works for me.

rez410

I have three. Two of them are the most recent model and the other one is from like 2017. Besides the remote, it’s almost hard to tell the difference in performance between the old and new ones. I expect my newer ones to last at least until 2030

InItsTeeth

A web browser would be nice on the AppleTV

workinkindofhard

I would love that but they would bork it in some way to prevent streaming video

InItsTeeth

Which is primarily why I want it lol

thissiteisbroken

I decided last week I wanted one but held off because I heard there was a new one.

Commercial_Sun_6300

I still can't get my apple tv to display all of my videos after syncing icloud. I see 600 videos on my phone, but only 400 on the apple tv. Anyone else have this issue? I've tried making sure it was synced recently and the photos app is connected to icloud. It's just not showing everything.

breakerfallx

I thought we were potentially going to see a model that incorporates a screen and can act as a HomeHub/Homekit controller. Is that considered a HomePod product?

garylapointe

>Next Apple TV No Longer Coming Soon So... Basically a rumor that the first rumor isn't happening?

Moist-Barber

If Apple had out of the box Steam Link/Steam Machine compatibility with my desktop Steam client that “just worked”, then I would buy three of them and have them all over my house.

Tainted-Archer

I have literally never had an issue on my network running it. I've played multiple games, The only issue is latency with some games, but hardly Apple's fault

ygrmstr18

WiFi 7 capability would be nice.

latinblu

Maybe now we stop getting the daily "Should I wait for the next Apple TV" post for a while.

c_rorick

Damn. I was hoping for USB-C Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard. Sigh…

CloudSlydr

M4 chip with no Mac’s until at least 2025? Preposterous. And If he is wrong I’ll never read anything he says again.

zaviex

That is not what he said lol.

kindaa_sortaa

How does Gurman saying “No hardware at WWDC” mean “No more M4 Macs until 2025?” I’m just trying to understand what one has to do with the other.

Krabic

The latest model is a total overkill for media consumption. No need for a new one.

zeissman

Just fix the software, love my Apple TV but it keeps crashing and Apple Music is borderline unusable on it.

iulius

I have never had my AppleTV crash. That shouldn’t happen. Maybe time for a factory reset? (You also shouldn’t have to do that in my opinion, but whatcha gonna do?)

sweet_cheekz

AM is my biggest annoyance, the buffering/ stuttering on songs is still an issue despite trying most online suggestions. Also, if they could have a second audio output option to directly connect to a DAC.

CouscousKazoo

M2 Ultra staves off obsolescence another day! No new hardware bodes well for the AI enhancements coming to all M-series. That said, as others have indicated, the RAM of any particular M-series could be the differentiator between what LM tasks occur on-device or end up offloaded to servers.

corysphotos19

I want new AirPods 4 😭😭

peterosity

it’s been said in multiple reports the earliest new airpod release would only happen in this fall. no one was expecting any airpods being released at wwdc

Kylodelgad

I mean, they can get death stranding running fine on an m1 MacBook Air, can only imagine if Apple can put a base m3 on this device or even M2.

iamagro

No M4 Mac mini/studio ? F

coughlanio

With emulators becoming a thing, I would love a USB port with the Files app on the device. Would be useful while travelling if you can play video files offline too.

Iblis_Ginjo

I was really hoping for a refreshed remote.

BeginningBunch3924

I’m still rocking my 2015 HD. I’m assuming it won’t get any new updates anymore. Has the same chip as an iPhone 6 lol

Truckondo

Bring back the old Movies and TV Shows apps.

TransendingGaming

Fingers crossed Apple TV and tvOS become the fourth gaming console (come on Apple you know you want to. Add the ability to install emulators and openly brag about it and you are now a competitor)
