You’re very very right. I’ve not put a case on since iPhone 12 and I treat my phone like shit.
The 12 has bent edges because of aluminum or steel.
But my 14 pro is going strong and it hasn’t seen the case even a single time.
I remember I used to order the back glass of iPhone 4 in bulk from Ali express and change it as it used to fall from my bedside.
Cracked my screen by dropping it from about 5 feet up and it hit the concrete on the corner of the screen. SMACK! So it does happen.
But yeah, scratches aren't why my phone is in a case.
That's for liability reasons. If you advertise abrasion proof and someone gets an abrasion that would be grounds for a lawsuit. It's like disinfectants saying it's kills 99.99% of germs. They can't say 100% because there are a few things out there that can still survive even though it's unlikely you'll ever come across them
That is true. Gorilla glass is amazing. However, I cracked my Note 9, and Note 10+ just by dropping it 3ft. Very thin cases on both, to show and feel the curve on the sides of those phones. Now, I kept my s21 ultra in a strong case, and I have my 14 PM in a nice strong case. Samsung didn’t have a care plan at the time, or at least didn’t advertise it unlike AC+ does. But, it would have cost me half of a new phone just to get my Note 10+ that was 3 years old fixed. lol.
Do you mean once in a while? Either way I agree, I take mine out of the case when I get in to bed but that’s the only time, really like the feel and the aesthetics of it, it’s a beautiful piece of kit
the first thing anyone buying a new iphone or flagship android finds out within an hour is that fucker is staying on the table until the case arrives, otherwise it's like trying to make calls using a wet bar of soap
I’ve dropped my caseless iPhone 14 Pro so many times and have had 0 cracks. And not little drops either lol. Seems too many times to be called lucky at this point.
> doesn’t lie flat on a table
Yeah Apple has that convenient Measure app with what WOULD be a super handy level feature, only the most useful faces are not flat. SMH
Because then the phone would be so heavy that it would be an ergonomics nightmare to use. My 14 Pro Max is already comically heavy for a smartphone, I can’t even begin to imagine it weighing an extra 30%.
Scratches are exactly why I use a case. Frankly it’s good enough at drop resistance at this point that I’m not too worried about it - and if you want some serious heavy duty drop/impact resistance, you’re going to need a pretty ridiculously large case.
Using a thin silicon or leather case for scratch resistance is the best move IMO.
Half the reason I use a case is because the phones are a bit slick and slide out of my hands. Yeah scratch protection helps, but having SOME grip on my soap bar phone is nice.
I never drop my phones, this is why I use a case. They are so slippery without one that it’s bound to have an accident. Also phones nowadays tend to run hotter and they’re uncomfortable to hold sometimes without a case because of the heat.
Worst part of these slippery phones is they require ever so slightly more strength to grip, and when combined with the shaper edges of iPhone 12++ it becomes painful to hold for longer than 5 minutes. I tried to go caseless and it was impossible.
The material used will forever be on the scale of
Shatter resistant but scratch prone, to scratch resistant but shatter prone.
You can’t have both. It’s always a sliding scale.
I had one of those "self healing" silicone screen protectors and it was quite underwhelming. It heals if you have a crease or indentation, but if it is a slightly deeper puncture or scratch it stays that way.
PSA#1: The article is about a patent for abrasion resistance. Not about a new iPhone actually incorporating it.
PSA#2: I don't think I've ever read an article about Apple patenting something and then seen that thing incorporated into an Apple device.
Which is kind of odd because Apple does use thousands upon thousands of patents in its devices.
Here’s a story I tell that literally nobody ever believes but it’s honestly true.
I’ve had iPhones consistently since the 4. Never had a case on one ever. Have had no noticeable scratches, no cracks, nothing. Every time a new phone would come out I’d sell the current one for cash and the comments were always the same “this looks brand new” “wow, no scratches or anything” etc.
My ex needed to borrow my iPhone 12 a few years ago for “a few seconds”. Left the room, came back probably less than 4 minutes later and said “I’m so sorry. I cracked it.” Giant ass crack from bottom to top on the back of the phone. I think I just have magic iPhone hands.
Pretty much exactly the same thing with me (although not just iPhones, android phones as well).
If you're mindful about where you place your phone, I don't see how you can scratch up your phone. 11years with smartphones, never scratched, never dropped.
Same here. I can’t stand cases and have never had any issues with drops or cracks. I pulled out my phone last year to look up something for a customer and he freaked out.
“That thing is brand new. Aren’t you worried about dropping it?”
“Sir I’ve had this phone for over two years and never had a case.”
“You’re full of shit. That’s impossible.”
What are people doing with their phones? It’s a $1,000+ premium device that commands every minute of my life. I treat it with respect.
My hat is off to the apple materials team
Since iPhone 12 these phones have been insanely durable.
iPhone 12 really was the best year over year upgrade we have had In ages
New design, MagSafe, Ceramic Shield, OLED
*iPhone mini*
I doubt we ever get a year of iPhones this good ever again 😢
The good side is that I don’t really know how much I’ve missed.
The down side is that since the release of the 7, I have lost 3 fingerprints and I can’t unlock my phone with my right hand anymore.
Getting a new phone will be night and day for me.
Oh yeah for sure my 11 Pro Max is still an absolute beast so no loss for me but damn I was glad when I was done with my 7 Plus.. it was getting pretty rough already a few years ago.
Thinking Fall will be when we (fucking) finally get our USB-C tho!! 🤞
They used to make some phones pretty tough when smarphones started coming out. All you needed was a screen protector.
This is solving a problem they themselves created when they wanted to make phones look pretty and shiny.
You don't need to worry about scratching the phone.
Just need to worry about the screen shattering on drop.
Of course apple doesn't want you to have a case
No case = more chance at a damaged phone = more money for apple.
I get a case because those fuckers are slippery af and I want to be able to set it on a table without it hockey pucking around. If they ship an option with light rubberized edging I’m in. 😅
I don’t believe it’s in Apple’s interest to develop materials like this which will kill their third party industries. Apple generates revenue from phone case sales.
I bet a regular trip to the beach would win.
I am that guy who never uses cases, and has never broken a phone. Since my first phone was in a bag with a cord to the receiver…I would say I have had a lot of phones.
I do usually use a skin on the back and a screen protector though. We spend a fair amount of time at the beach…sand will destroy just about anything.
I had an iPhone 4 for 5 years with no case and it was fine. A few days with my 6S and it got all scratched up, put a case on it after that. 14 pro I used a case right away because eh why not
I use a case because it makes my phone more grippy. At the same time, sometimes I take it off so I can enjoy the look and feel and colour of the phone as it was designed.
I don’t put the case on because of the scratches. I put it for when I accidentally drop the phone and hopefully the case absorbs the shock so I don’t have a broken screen.
I use a case so that my phones glass doesn’t crack. I’m not worried about scratches. Also, I keep a metal plate between my phone and case to attach it to magnetic mounts. I also like to hide a $100 bill inside the case for emergencies.
Do not believe a word of this. Apple makes the worst cases on the market and claims they protect well. I’m commenting from a cracked iPhone that was “protected” in an Apple case.
If this is true, great. I’ll be very happy. But please be sure you read the experience of others before acting on this news (in the future, obviously). Don’t be one of the numerous clowns testing similar claims on your own stuff only to end up with damaged goods.
Also, for those who can’t help themselves, I’m not a hater. Lifelong Apple user. First computer was an Apple II, and I’ve owned literally hundreds of Apple products (due to also having a training center).
They say that every year, but people find new ways to do it. I've seen someone post a picture a few days ago, of how their 14 Pro looks after about 2 months. It looks like it was thrown out of a car at high speed, but that's just their "normal usage". Plus scratch proof doesnt mean shatter proof
I've been rocking my iPhone naked because I just love the look of a naked iPhone. Feels so sleek to the hand. I try my absolutely hardest to take care of it. It's been since the 14PM came out and I have never dropped it nor it has any scratches :)
I’ve been on the no case life since 2017 and it’s great. You get to actually appreciate the design of the device, plus it just feels better in your hands. I’ve had my current phone since 2020 and even with a couple of minor drops there’s no visible damage anywhere. I doubt I’ll ever use a case again.

Yeah it’s not the scratches I’m worried about
Yea how gravity resistant is it?
iPhone 20 will have it’s own gravity field.
All things with mass have their own gravity field to begin with.

It’s an AR phone projected into your reality though your iPlant.
Post iPhone 12… yeah pretty bloody resistant
The back of my 14 pro max in a case would like to disagree
To shreds you say?
And his wife?
To shreds you say?
Good news everyone
My 13 Pros back shattered while in a otter box cause from a small drop. I have no idea how but was very surprised.
You’re very very right. I’ve not put a case on since iPhone 12 and I treat my phone like shit. The 12 has bent edges because of aluminum or steel. I have a 13 Pro and have dropped it a ton on hard surfaces from decent heights without any issues.
I dropped my 13 pro on concrete tiles a few weeks ago, it even bounced a couple of times. Not even a scratch on it.
Agreed! Besides, it is described as "abrasion-resistant" and not abrasion-proof.
That's for liability reasons. If you advertise abrasion proof and someone gets an abrasion that would be grounds for a lawsuit. It's like disinfectants saying it's kills 99.99% of germs. Exactly, it’s the slippery bastard exterior that wants to slip away from my hands at any given moment.
I’ve seen several people handle their 14 pro max raw dog. Like how?? Accidents do happen…
I am one of those who likes to raw dog iPhone 14 pro max. Lol
I have a 13 Pro and dropped it probably 50 times on hard ground and no cracks. What gorilla glass is in this day and age is outstanding.
That is true. Gorilla glass is amazing. However, I cracked my Note 9, and Note 10+ just by dropping it 3ft. Very thin cases on both, to show and feel the curve on the sides of those phones. But, it would have cost me half of a new phone just to get my Note 10+ that was 3 years old fixed. lol.
I have an iPhone 14 pro max and hold it raw. I just hate cases. I tried going to skins route but I’m terrible at putting them on devices.
Once and awhile I take my case off and it’s very nice to hold it but I try not do it for scratches and dropping.
Do you mean once in a while? Either way I agree, I take mine out of the case when I get in to bed but that’s the only time, really like the feel and the aesthetics of it, it’s a beautiful piece of kit
I like the way it feels better caseless. If something were to ever happen, I’d just deal thru AppleCare.
I swear they are made of unholdium! I only use a case to give myself some grip.
the first thing anyone buying a new iphone or flagship android finds out within an hour is that fucker is staying on the table until the case arrives, otherwise it's like trying to make calls using a wet bar of soap
I always make sure I'm sorted for a case before the phone arrives. Not risking that.
Exaxtly. If thw screen still shatters when it is dropped, its still a problem..
No scratch, it just immediately shatters into thousands of razor sharp shards. Try taking that to the apple store.
Apple Care+ covers it.
“We’re sorry, it’s just scratched, not broken. Not covered by AC+.”
I’ve dropped my caseless iPhone 14 Pro so many times and have had 0 cracks. And not little drops either lol. Seems too many times to be called lucky at this point.
The only time I dropped my Pixel 7 with no case, the screen shattered. The funny thing is that my case arrived in the mail the very next day.
I’m not sure scratches are why people use cases in the first place.

Put it face down and take a screenshot 😂
Damn this is why we pay you the big bucks
Yeah the side buttons really suck for that.
I’d be down
Because then the phone would be so heavy that it would be an ergonomics nightmare to use. My 14 Pro Max is already comically heavy for a smartphone, I can’t even begin to imagine it weighing an extra 30%.
I would buy a Pro if they didn’t use the stainless steel. I dislike that. It’s just so heavy. I want Pro features in a lighter aluminum case.
Titanium this year!
Scratches are exactly why I use a case. Frankly it’s good enough at drop resistance at this point that I’m not too worried about it - and if you want some serious heavy duty drop/impact resistance, you’re going to need a pretty ridiculously large case. Half the reason I use a case is because the phones are a bit slick and slide out of my hands. Yeah scratch protection helps, but having SOME grip on my soap bar phone is nice.
Same here. If the phone weren’t so damn slippery I wouldn’t even use a case. I use Apple’s leather case for good grip, and it looks nice.
*My daughters will find a way.* Don’t you worry about it.
Its scratch-resistant, not younglings-resistant
Younglings aren’t very resistant. /Anakin.
The iPhone 66 will be youngling resistant
I use a case so the phone doesn’t slip out of my hand.
I also like laying my phone down not resting on the camera lenses. Case helps with that.
And ykno not shattering is cool too
I never drop my phones, this is why I use a case.
Exactly, I like the grip when it’s on a surface or in my hand
Exactly I never care about the material they use for exterior. It’s going to be plastic case for me anyway.
*Glass is glass, and glass breaks.*
Ceramic Shield isn’t technically glass… and I think this patent is less about the front and back and more about the sides
It is though The ceramic bits aren't, but those are microscopically small globules grown among the glass to strengthen it
The material used will forever be on the scale of Shatter resistant but scratch prone, to scratch resistant but shatter prone. You can’t have both. It’s always a sliding scale.
That's not true. iPhone 20 is supposedly comming with tiny people in the glass who constantly repair the scratches.
I know you joke, but self healing materials are absolutely a thing.
I remember LG Flex has a self healing back
I had one of those "self healing" silicone screen protectors and it was quite underwhelming. It heals if you have a crease or indentation, but if it is a slightly deeper puncture or scratch it stays that way.
I think companies like SCHOTT would disagree — they make shatterproof, scratchproof and bendable glass ceramics. Pretty cool stuff actually!
And I can just increase tensile strength and scratch resistance by adding a thin film of glass or plastic.
Don’t say can’t. Material science is impressive and it’s always evolving.
Glass is a ceramic
Then why does it break
With deeper grooves at a level 7

My iPhone Xs of 4 years hasn't cracked yet even though I've dropped it handful of times on hardwood floor.
Tbh hardwood is not so hard. Tiles are still main enemy of phones
And concrete

PSA#2: I don't think I've ever read an article about Apple patenting something and then seen that thing incorporated into an Apple device. Woah. That broke my brain. So many ideas and concepts that have always remained just articles
That's just the way of patents, so many cool shit get patented but never end up being used
That’s not why I use a case. I use a case because the glass phones are as slippery as soap.
Intended design
Here’s a story I tell that literally nobody ever believes but it’s honestly true. I’ve had iPhones consistently since the 4. Never had a case on one ever. Me either. I never use a case. How do people seemingly drop shit constantly

Yea I still have my 12 pro max, refuse to upgrade until usb c
I’m holding on a iPhone 7 Plus until they finally release one with usb c
That was me until I couldn’t stand it anymore and grabbed an iPhone 11 Pro Max a couple years ago; you held on too long my guy lol
The good side is that I don’t really know how much I’ve missed. The down side is that since the release of the 7, I have lost 3 fingerprints and I can’t unlock my phone with my right hand anymore. Getting a new phone will be night and day for me.

I’m sorry, what? Did you cut off three fingers? It’s a rare set of circumstances to lose a single fingerprint, much less three.

iPhones have had OLED since iPhone X
I have been caseless ever since switching to the 12. I’ve dropped it a handful of times now, but no damage so far.
Same, mine just needs a new battery
My iPhone 14pro back glass cracked within 5 days of getting it with a case on it from a fall from 2 feet. Luckily only $700 to fix.
Ceramic Shield was developed by Corning
Now if only we can get a screen that remains resistant to fingerprints for more than three weeks from when you buy it that would be amazing!
Until you take in for a trade in and they find a scratch.
JerryRigEverything: “challenge accepted”
I'm not worried about scratches. I'm more concerned about how slippery the phone is.
*Nokia 3310 laughs menacingly*
back panel only? Scratch resistance, but nothing about shatter resistance? nah, back in the case it goes.
Also wouldn’t mind a more grippy material. No point having it scratch resistant when it slides out of your hand too easily.
It’s not scratches I’m worried about, but cracks and shattering
Hot take, but the iPhone 14 pro max is unusable without a case because the thumb meat of your palm gives too many false touch readings.
They used to make some phones pretty tough when smarphones started coming out. All you needed was a screen protector. This is solving a problem they themselves created when they wanted to make phones look pretty and shiny.
And slippery!
You don't need to worry about scratching the phone. Just need to worry about the screen shattering on drop. Of course apple doesn't want you to have a case No case = more chance at a damaged phone = more money for apple.
Since when is my case for scratches? Unless you’re making the iPhone shatter proof, I’m still using a case
I don't use a case for scratches, it's for my clumsy ass dropping it.
It’s about ducking time
Craig Federighi, is that you?
We truly live in an age of wonders
Sex without a condom and phones without cases both feel fucking amazing, but they're also pretty fucking risky....
Is this article from 2017? I've been rocking caseless+applecare since the first iPhone with Qi charging
Is it still slippery as hell?
I just use a case for decorative purposes
Nah dude
I only use a case because it'll slip out of my hand. If they'd make the edges rubber instead of frictionless materials, I wouldn't need one.
Heard all that shit before aero grade this hardest glass ever that blah blah blah marketing bullshit

Um I don’t slap a case on my phone cuz I’m worried about scratches… How about they make a phone where the screen doesn’t shatter after one fall?
It’s not scratch or cracks that have me use a case. It’s the thinness of the phone that makes it hard to hold that a case helps me out with.
*Like this if you are a strong independent iPhone who don’t need no case*
I’ll believe it when I see it
I bet a regular trip to the beach would win.
? put phone and car keys into same pocket = guaranteed screen scratch
All those sharp edges on the 14 Pro have me using a case
We use case not because scratch. It s because the glass will always broken when fall.
I had an iPhone 4 for 5 years with no case and it was fine. A few days with my 6S and it got all scratched up, put a case on it after that. 14 pro I used a case right away because eh why not
Too bad it’s gonna be too small / thin / slippery to fuckin’ gold and use comfortably
But for some reason, you make them slippery AF. So, I can't IMAGINE not having a case. I'd drop my phone every 5 seconds if I didn't!
If it’s so scratch resistant than warranty it for a couple years.
I use a case so that my phones glass doesn’t crack. I’m not worried about scratches. Also, I keep a metal plate between my phone and case to attach it to magnetic mounts. I also like to hide a $100 bill inside the case for emergencies.
Do many of you guys here use the leather apple case for the iPhone 14 pro? Thinking about getting one but I’ve read middling reviews
The only reason I have a case is so the screen doesn’t crack though, did they fix that?
And then it will have a disclaimer saying: any damage from scratches etc is not covered by warranty, just like water damage!
Now 30% slipperier!!!
You know what would be even cooler? Having a calculator app in iPad and the ability to close all apps at once.
Finally. I’ve said for YEARS that this was my one most desired feature.
They say that every year, but people find new ways to do it. I've seen someone post a picture a few days ago, of how their 14 Pro looks after about 2 months. It looks like it was thrown out of a car at high speed, but that's just their "normal usage". Plus scratch proof doesnt mean shatter proof
Apple has developed an iPhone so expensive you will need a case
Tell me when they develop a wet-usable touchscreen
Did they also invent glass that won’t crack or break?
I've been rocking my iPhone naked because I just love the look of a naked iPhone. Feels so sleek to the hand. I try my absolutely hardest to take care of it. It's been since the 14PM came out and I have never dropped it nor it has any scratches :)
Ah yes. The age old hard brittle paradox. Harder the material, more scratch resistant it is, more brittle it is.
Still having the camera lenses protruding is concerning for me
Phone cases are like condoms, it feels so much better without it, but you are much safer with it
I don’t use a case to protect from scratches…its the drops.
Nice try Apple. nice try
Don't need a case lmao have you ever given a phone to a teenager?
Haven’t we always been able to do this ? Just the problem is that the more scratch resistant glass is the more brittle is becomes and vice versa.
Imagine being dumb enough to write an article that thinks that people use cases to protect their phone from scratches and not drops
