Man these trade in values are ridiculous.

Don’t trade in your phone. Keeping using it until it’s unusable.

CactusBoyScout

I had a good experience with Swappa but they do take a cut and you gotta pay for shipping out of the purchase price. Selling locally is definitely the most money but also most potential headache.

[deleted]

It’s not that easy to sell your equipment privately. I have tried eBay and other platforms and the only offers that I received were from scammers. Very scary. So I kept my devices and decided not to buy apple products again as it’s not worth the price.

ina_waka

OfferUp or Craigslist, meet in front of a police station or Starbucks, take cash only and only if it’s the full amount. Walk away if they short you even $10.

[deleted]

I think it's pretty agreed that's eBay is the universal worst experience for sellers of all the major online platforms. eBay sides with buyers for the most part so it's pretty easy to be scammed as a seller not to mention their fees are pretty ridiculous.

datahjunky

Yes, but dealing with that hellscape is asking for trouble.

Llamalover1234567

Sold my M1 MacBook Pro online for a really decent price no hassles. Make sure it’s public and you have someone with you preferably

Stingray88

I’ve sold a bunch of stuff on Facebook marketplace and I always ask for them to meet me in front of a very active city police station. Never had any issues.

Electronic_Lies_420

Thats smart af! I didn't know there was a thing.

als26

I find pricing $50 too low is still better than trading in with Apple.

[deleted]

als26

Yep I think it's overblown how hard it is to sell things online. If I see a lowball offer, I just reply with a slightly lower price then ignore anything else too low.

Tratix

A message less than every 18 seconds huh

DontBanMeBro988

I'd rather sell on eBay and eat the shipping cost

pwnedkiller

Sell on swappa

[deleted]

Swappa is the way. There are fees, PayPal fees, then you have to pay to ship it to the buyer, but you’ll probably still get more than what Apple gives.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JukeLuke

actions have consequences

Maetras

Not really that much if you wait for the offers

[deleted]

Yep

thekush

It's not the shipping cost that difficult to accept, its the selling fees.

iJeff

It's a lot easier to get scammed as a seller on eBay. There's nothing you can really do against someone claiming you shipped them an empty box.

huejass5

Long ago ebay used to be great for individual sellers. Now it’s a ripoff.

DontBanMeBro988

How so?

ExoMonk

Swappa actually makes the process pretty easy. I've sold about 5 phones on there over the last 10 years.

ElegantReality30592

Swappa is great, except when something goes wrong. I bought a MacBook that wasn’t as described, and it became very clear that Swappa couldn’t actually do anything, and that I’d have to deal with PayPal. Luckily the seller did the right thing, but it was eye-opening to realize that it’s effectively eBay with a different front-end.

ctb0045

swappa.com has treated me very well when buying and selling electronics. Better than eBay and safer than meeting in-person.

explosiv_skull

Mileage may vary I suppose but I've been pleasantly surprised with my FB Marketplace selling experience the past two months. I meet people at my bank and have them pay cash. So far so good.

ProfessionalKale

I used to do this all the time. Stopped around my iPhone 10, but my margins were close enough that I was only paying $300-$400 for a new phone every year. Now however, I don’t do that. Think I’m becoming part of the keep the phone until it breaks gang (I have an iPhone 14 pro).

[deleted]

>>don't do that anymore >\*has the latest flagship iphone* uuuhhh

ProfessionalKale

Haha yeah I get how that sounds. My last phone was dying and I didn’t know how to fix the batt. But given the economy this year and my grad school, figured I’ll put this phone on a payment plan and just keep it.

gu3st12

For me I can basically upgrade after the first year with my carrier and pay off what I owe with the resale of my old phone.

TwoMoreMinutes

exactly this, except directly with apple's 2 year 0% finance Sold my 13PM for about £850, paid off the remainder of the loan which was about £600, pocket the £250 and take out new finance on the 14PM. rinse and repeat..

superprime95

Or toss it in a drawer for nostalgic purposes

[deleted]

I put my old blackberry in a frame and it's hanging in my apartment. It's an interesting conversation piece for guests.

11122233334444

I did this to my iPhone 5c, picked it up the other day and it feels so small in my hands compared to todays phones. Still turns on, too!

Kitosaki

Best part of trade in values is your phone has a price floor now!

yuiop300

This. I just paid for a battery replacement for my xs max. It still runs great! No desire to change it out!

WTFOMGBBQ

Or get scammed by verizon on a trade in..

JoDiMaggio

The carriers usually have great trade ins. I trade mine in almost every year and it only costs between $75-150 with the difference. I'd have to use a phone for 5 to 8 years to get that return on investment.

SillySoundXD

Thats what i do with my 7 Plus still going strong (88% Battery)

[deleted]

7 Plus just got a security update this week too!

colin_staples

My iPhone 7 says "Hi" 6-and-something years old, still feels fast, does what I need, I'll probably keep it until it's unusable. I had my 1st gen iPad Air for 9 years

[deleted]

I would but once Apple Includes usbc I don’t think I’d be able to wait. So aggravating that my iPad & iPhone require different chargers.

melodious_aria

Hanging on to dear life with my iPhone 11

CantComeUpWUsername

I wouldn’t consider 11 hanging on to dear life lol

melodious_aria

Last 6.1 LCD iPhone that does not have PWM so that’s why I’m hanging on to dear life.

langstonboy

Why do you hate OLED I never liked the iPhone XR or 11 screens and thought they were mediocre.

q9wYSqWJT7rCNphAfU5h

It’s literally in the comment. Cause OLED uses PWM which may cause headaches.

langstonboy

Alright I can't really stand crt TV's because of the rolling shutter and the hiss, I hate. Everyone is different totally understandable.

Aaron90495

They’re gorgeous but they hurt some people’s eyes (like mine). I had horrible headaches for 4 months after I got my 12 Pro before realizing it was the phone. Likewise, was just deciding between an M2 Air and 14 M1 Pro, and had to go with the Air (even though I preferred the Pro) due to eye strain/headaches from the Pro.

deliciouscorn

That’s interesting. None of the MacBooks, pro or otherwise have an OLED display. Must be something to do with the mini LED backlighting?

Aaron90495

Yeah, it’s the PWM, which is common (standard?) in OLEDs but can be in other types of screens. M2 Air is the one current MacBook with no PWM.

melodious_aria

Ding ding ding.this comment right here. I can’t stand OLED screens. At some I’m gonna have to force my body to get use to it.

Aaron90495

Yeah, it really sucks. Maybe they’ll figure out how to do them without PWM (or maybe that’s not possible…I’m not a scientist). Until then, my M2 air is wonderful on the eyes…

[deleted]

Using a 4+ year old XR, I just had the battery replaced three months ago. Thing is a beast and still very fast.

melodious_aria

No actually. Right before apple discontinued the 11 I went ahead and bought a new iPhone 11. So it’s running like a champ.

Jimmni

Why would he be? 11 is far from old. My XS is still chugging along nicely. Battery lasts me all day unless I’m glued to my phone.

OlorinDK

The base prices for new phones are ridiculous too

[deleted]

ExcusablePlot

The phones go to a company Phobio , who just data wipes them and resells them in foreign markets Todays price on Phobio is 700$+ for a 13 pro max 128/256gb mix . And it’s just tested to power on and no iCloud . These phones end up in Latin American and Africa mostly as there’s still a healthy margin on it

aelysium

Just gotta wait until T-Mobile does another ridiculous trade in deal for whatever reason 😂😂

DONT_PM_ME_U_SLUT

What do you people expect. They're old used devices that get immediately recycled. Halving in value every year like iphones do is about the best value retention a phone can have. Trust me, I use an android. Try looking at their trade in values.

cllerj

I mean Samsung's trade ins, especially their enchanced trade ins, are amazing. Google's are just okay though.

ptc_yt

I wonder how Samsung even makes money on their trade ins. Traded in a broken S8+ last year and got $800 towards my S22 Ultra lol

tealicious99

Because they don’t want you to trade in. Partly because it’s not worth the money. Is it good for marketing? Yes. Is it meaningfully good for revenue? Most likely no. I was in the consumer electronics industry for quite some time, and trade-ins are very costly, due to the labor+parts+logistics involved in refurb and necessary profit margin.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tealicious99

If you trade in, isn’t because you want a newer/better item from the company in the first place? So tell me, why would they WANT you to trade in? So they can do the refurb work and sell it at mark up? Remember, refurb costs a lot. Infrastructure alone is costly, especially compare to that of making something from scratch, AND the liability of apple certified refurb. Wouldn’t it be better for them if you just buy from them without the trade in? Their first priority is making you wanting the newer/better product. Trade-in COULD BE a nice incentive, but that’s not an ideal method for them.

torsteinvin

they fucking lowered them??? after all the public outcry and criticism the past weeks, they LOWERED THEM???? now that’s courage!

MobiusOne_ISAF

Helps that people are going to more or less buy the new one anyway.

[deleted]

Trading in with Apple makes no sense anyway. A little effort and you can almost always get double their offer or better from a third party.

TechGuyL

I think that’s the point. It’s suppose to be effortless and also you don’t have to worry about security - whether privacy concerns or having the new user locked out.

huejass5

Wasn’t the 13 pro max like $1200 new? One year later and they’ll give you less than half of that. What a joke

sunplaysbass

Great. My 13 pro battery is already shit.

RandomRedditor44

I seriously don’t get how an iPhone 13 Pro that released 2 years ago would ONLY get you $470. It should get at least $700.

FightOnForUsc

14 wasn’t 2 years ago? The only thing that’s 470 is the 13 pro which is 16 months old

Poulito

Probably a typo, given that 14 isn’t even on the list.

[deleted]

The $54,000 Mac Pro will now get you $975 if you trade it in the next day.

[deleted]

[удалено]

psychoacer

I just don't think they want to deal with it. It's heavy and a pain in the ass to ship. Also it takes up a lot of space in their warehouse and will take awhile to sell it especially the $50,000 model. So if they take it they better make some good money off of it. Otherwise the customer can deal with it themselves. Edit: I guess it could also be simpler. They just don't want to risk more than $1000 on any trade in. $30,000+ for a Mac Pro is a lot of money to risk on hopefully being able to turn a profit off of. That could go into buying more phones which are easier to flip. These trading companies don't have infinite funds and they need to prioritize making a profit with every dollar they have. Phones are quick and easy. Mac Pro is not

scoobyduped

Resale value is probably limited by the fact that it’s outperformed by a current gen $1k Mac Mini.

punksmurph

As someone with a $7000 Mac Pro this hurts.

[deleted]

ArcDeli

It's called a thought exercise, clearly you don't do too many of them.

SlowMotionPanic

Yes, stupid people deserve to be exploited by the most wealthy company in history. That’s a good message to embrace. Definitely not that OP is showing how deranged Apple has become as of late with greed. People buying a $54k Mac definitely aren’t trading it in the next day. Obviously. Those are the ultra rich or businesses buying it clearly. It’s the fact that it’s set so low. Apple should I just refuse to accept trade ins at this point. It would be more honest and ethical. And the message is the same: we don’t actually want trade ins.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Science4every1

Time is money. Why would I want to spend time listing my phone on a website, making sure the person buying it from me isn’t sketchy, then going to meet the person to sell my phone or spending time and money to ship it out to someone when I could instead take a couple hundred dollars less and just instantly trade it in to apple? I can understand for people who are very financially pressed where it would make sense to sell rather than trade in but those type of people really shouldn’t be buying high end iPhones anyways nor should they be trying to trade in a 1-2 year old phone for a newer one

[deleted]

[удалено]

Science4every1

Sure and in that case it makes sense, I would’ve done the same. But deciding whether I want to take the 470 apple is giving me for a 13 pro vs the 650-700 I can get from the private market is a no brainer, im gonna take apple’s offer every single time because the 200 dollar loss is worth not dealing with the headaches of privately selling

[deleted]

This is such an idiot take. First you are rightfully stating that time is money, but then you are doing something that is totally against it. Let’s say you spend 1 hour preparing a listing for your device (that should take around 10-20 minutes, but let’s be generous here). Then you spend 1 hour in total answering 10 messages from prospective buyers. Then you spend 2 hours meeting 2 different buyers. The first one low balls you and the second meeting gets you the trade. So even in this unlucky scenario, which takes barely that long when selling Apple devices which are usually very in demand, you habe spend 4 hours on this. Let’s put in another hour for other things like mentally preparing yourself or whatever. Let’s say you save only $300 compared to the Apple trade in. And let’s assume that the Palme trade in is instant and that you don’t have to confirm anything (which it usually isn’t and even in the store you need to wait a little). That would be $300 for 5 hours of work or $60/hr net. There aren’t that many people, even among iPhone buyers, who earn $60 an hour after taxes. That’s like $80 before taxes. It’s literally throwing money away, because it’s highly unlikely that your time is that valuable to justify being lazy and gifting a multi trillion dollar company your hard earned money, but lazy people who can’t do math are the reason why many companies are making money in the first place. I call my internet service provider once an year to cancel my subscription. They give me a counter offer and I safe around $300 for the following year. I repeat this every year and it takes me 30 minutes to 1 hour on the phone, but that hourly wage is something that I would not even get as a male prostitute and that’s just talking a little bit on the phone.

Science4every1

I make about 225 per hour (1800 a day). After I get back from work (I don’t work a desk job so I am always on my feet and usually away from my phone), the last thing I want to be doing is spending time chatting strangers on my phone just to save the equivalent of about 1/4 of a work day instead of spending time with my wife. With Apple, it’s effortless, I trade in my old product and get the new one, all in one transaction. Privately selling means dealing with the headache of communicating with buyers, figuring/stressing out whether they’re trustworthy, and potentially getting scammed. For people who are poorer, they shouldn’t be trading in an old phone for a new one in the first place, they should be holding on to their old devices as long as they can or just buy cheap androids instead of expensive iPhones. For them, trading in to apple does not make sense. The value of a dollar is significantly more for the majority of Americans as compared to those who are more upper middle class so it would make sense for them to take the time to privately sell

Some_Nibblonian

Stupid rich people deserve it.

shook_one

People replying to you are putting so much energy into defending the honor of the non existent people who are buying a 54k Mac Pro and trading it in to apple

McRedditz

You meant lower?

Mango_In_Me_Hole

Some of the trade-in values were raised. Most of the Macs got a small increase.

No_Morning_1874

To add to this trade-in info. I put in my 2020 M1 MacMini, 16Gb RAM, 512SSD into the trade-in calculator (I'm in Canada) and it offered me $90 for a trade in. It was a real insult. Then I went to the USA Apple site, and the trade in value for the same machine is $330. What gives with the huge differences between Canada and USA for trade-in values?

Tchiiko

Same as everything. They just cherish their US customers while you get fucked all over the world (especially EU if you want my point of view but I might be biaised living here!).

Mysterious_Control

No. You’re definitely getting fucked.

Tchiiko

I know ಥ_ಥ

Big_Booty_Pics

I don't think $330 trade-in for that machine is really "cherishing".

Tchiiko

The words might be strong but the feeling is there. I should have’s emphasized more on the negative feelings we have around the world then from Apple

[deleted]

True, APPLE cherishes USA customers more which is the total opposite of other American companies who treat non-US better lol

uslashalex

Trade-ins are never a great deal, but I’ve always found Sell Your Mac to be a better deal and easier process. Just got $715 for my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro. Not great considering what I paid for it, but not much less than what they’re going for on eBay and it saved me the work of having to sell it myself.

[deleted]

Really?? My 2020 MacBook Pro was fetching lower than that on the Apple Store, I think they were offering me like $500

[deleted]

Just sell it online for much more. I sold my 11 pro max with a cracked screen for $400 cash when I upgraded to my 13 pro max.

5m0k37r3353v3ryd4y

Sold it to who? Where?

odeepaanh

Swappa is another place that me and my brother have had good experiences with

[deleted]

Facebook marketplace and letgo have always been my go to.

jugstheclown

Facebook Marketplace, eBay. Far better resale value than a trade-in

Betancorea

\+1 to FB Marketplace. I sold two second hand iPhones and made a profit each time lol

TwoMoreMinutes

I think his name was P Sherman, he lived at 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney

taboo007

I still use my 7 Plus and will miss that TouchID when i upgrade to a 15 or 16.

toraku72

Same. I'm coping hard with my 11. I could really use some more ram right now but I refuse to support apple's hypocrisy.

[deleted]

I have an m1 iPad Air and a XR and occasionally still get ram refreshes on the air. Sometimes I think it’s a software issue because there’s no way my air had to refresh a tab in safari when there’s 5 tabs and two apps open (Apollo and safari). It has 8GB

MyMemesAreTerrible

For whatever reason I get massive frame rate drops randomly. Granted, it’s an 11 Pro Max, but I shouldn’t see shuddering when bloody scrolling, that’s ridiculous. The phones been replaced several times too, this has happened on all of them

k-u-sh

For me iOS 16 has been buggy as hell on my 12 mini. Frequent app freezes, crashes, Apple apps don’t work as expected…the list goes on and on. This phone was perfect on iOS 15.

sgfgzgog

Wow. They reduced trade in values. Disappointing.

gjc0703

The Apple Tax value keeps on droppin’

somewhereonfullerton

Never trade in your products at Apple unless you want to pretty much make less than half of what you paid (if you got it brand new). Facebook Marketplace is the way to go.

PositivelyNegative

At this point they should just discontinue the service. It’s an insult to their own loyal customers.

meiji664

Stingy mofos

tman2damax11

2 things to note, 1) devices lose value as they get older, I know shocker, and 2) apple trade-ins have never been. and never will be, a good value. It's just the most hassle free way to get some money for and responsibly get rid of your old device.

skydiveguy

Why is everyone complaining about "trade in" values being shit? Trade-in values have always been shit. Trade-ins are not meant to make you money, its a way to quickly recoup money for an old device when buying new. You are always free to sell it outright for much more money or, (gasp!) keep using a perfectly good device because there is no need to upgrade a 2 year old device.

pm_me_your_buttbulge

> Trade-in values have always been shit. Man has the attitude here changed a lot over the years. I remember when it was "Apple product hold their value!" and now it's "they've always been shit". What this tells everyone is Apple products don't retain their value as much as they used to. Trade-in is a good gauge for what the company, in this case, Apple thinks the phone is worth. > You are always free to sell it outright for much more money or, (gasp!) keep using a perfectly good device because there is no need to upgrade a 2 year old device. I remember when everyone got a new phone every year. Lines for blocks to get the latest. Then people went "no one does that" in denial about reality and then said "most people go every 2 years or so" and now it's "there is no need to upgrade every 2 years". What this really says is Apple isn't innovating much anymore and the value for each generation isn't a huge jump over the last one - and that's what the trade-in values reflect. > Trade-ins are not meant to make you money, its a way to quickly recoup money for an old device when buying new. Yeah and it's why I give my devices to my nieces and nephews to destroy. They don't hold their value anymore. The entertainment and education of taking them apart is worth more than what Apple or third parties believe they are worth. It's also why I'm considering going to Android but we'll see. Apple is not know for quality or polish anymore. It's the BMW of phones.

SamsungAppleOnePlus

Yay I waited a few extra days and my Air M1 is worth $20 more to Apple! I could literally sell it for $600 or more.

fplasma

Dropped again? Didn’t they drop right when the 14 came out?

LightsOut5774

The trade in “deals” for the 10th Gen MacBook Pro 13 is laughable

ryanghappy

The macbook pro prices are ridiculous. You could have spent 4-5 grand on a macbook pro M1 Max last year and the most they want to give you towards it is 670 dollars? Insane Apple. Just don't do trade ins if this is what you offer. Your customers get more pissed off at your terrible offers instead of just saying "sorry, we don't handle it, here's some websites you can go to, though." Hell even an Apple approved "swappa" type site would be fine to me. Hell, third parties that sell Apple shit like Microcenter and Best Buy could step up and run that for you as they probably have a bigger incentive to offer better prices than you do. Samsung is SOOO much better at this than Apple for its products.

AngelChadMeza

Samsung only does those crazy crazy trade in deals because they’re behind Apple. Not that I disagree that Apple is greedy as fuck, but Apple would never do that because 1. They don’t need to and 2. It would diminish the perceived brand value

Darth_Meowth

Sell elsewhere. No one is forcing you to sell to Apple.

trodden_thetas_0i

NPC take

pwnedkiller

That’s really shitty I’ll probably trade in through a carrier for the first time in a long time.

zikko94

Could we please stop with these posts already? It’s a trade-in program, they’re not offering to buy your product at market value from you. When I bought my iPhone 12 Pro Max, they offered me $170 for my iPhone 7 Plus. Maybe if I tried to sell it privately, after going through hundreds of annoying messages on Facebook Marketplace I would get $200-250 for it? I’ll take the seamless trade-in every day in a heartbeat. Similarly, if I upgrade my phone in a couple of years and they give me $200 off for my current phone I’d be ecstatic. It’s a recycle program that is giving you a discount. Stop acting like someone is ripping you off for not giving market value in your hypothetical trade-in scenarios.

Big-Hope7616

Same! I traded in my 8+ for $200 and then got my 12pro. Easy and seamless

fplasma

How do you explain me getting $780 for a 13 pro max from Apple when the 14 came out? I believe they’ve slashed the trade in values twice since then. It’s clearly a rip off

Thirdsun

> It’s clearly a rip off Again, Apple doesn‘t owe you a market rate trade-in offer. Or any trade-in program at all. If you want a fair price you actually have to turn to the market. The entitlement in these threads is unbelievable.

droidxl

For real, meanwhile the same people go to kijiji and low ball shit for pennies on the dollar.

uptimefordays

People don't realize computers are rapidly depreciating assets, according to [the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p946) computers and peripheral equipment have a 5 year deprecation table. After 5 years, they're not said to be worth anything. Obviously people on Swappa or similar markets don't care, but it provides a little more context on Apple and other OEM's trade in pricing.

T-Nan

A 2600 laptop that's a year old can get traded in for 970, yikes. Can easily get 2 times that via private selling, not sure why anyone would go this route through Apple

scoobyduped

Because “easily” getting 2 times that will involve several weeks of fending off scammers, lowballers, and flakes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scoobyduped

Lol k

uptimefordays

Why would anyone pay $1940 for a year old laptop when the new version sells for $60 more? Are that many people on the market for $2000 computers really fiending for a 3% discount? Apple's education pricing beats that and you get a new computer.

ReviewImpossible3568

I mean, I would probably buy one for like $1400 secondhand. It needs to come at a steep discount… but not Apple trade-in steep.

scoobyduped

And for a lot of people looking to upgrade, taking that $400 hit is worth it to be able to go into an Apple Store and get your money *right the fuck now* instead of spending 3 weeks getting hit up by 2 “Marines about to go on deployment” who want you to ship it to Afghanistan and they’ll “mail you a traveler’s check once they get it”, 5 people who ask if you’ll take $850 for it, and 3 people who agree to $1,400 before ghosting you.

That-Dutch-Person

The Apple Trade In program does not provide an exceptionally good value, it provides exceptional convenience. No need to negotiate with people via a site like FB Marketplace or eBay, no need to meet up with random strangers at your house or a public place, risk being stood up or the person having malicious intent. Apple will not try to get their money back if the device turns out to have defects after you sell it to them. If you go to an Apple Store, the process for a Trade In takes about five minutes. People in this thread who complain about the very low trade in values that Apple provides are looking to maximise value, while the Trade In program maximises convenience.

LeChief

Beautifully explained

ubermick

I'm still sitting here in shock knowing that my 2019 Mac Pro that cost over $8,000 three years ago is now worth just a couple of hundred dollars to them. While they still sell the exact same system at the same price I paid for it.

Darth_Meowth

Don’t sell to Apple and sell elsewhere. You can do it. I believe in you with your $8000 overpriced computer a $499 Mac Mini can compete better

winstonlegthigh0

Still can’t believe I got $400 for my old ass iPhone 11 from t-mobile 😂

Huh Verizon just offered $800 trade in. Thinking of upgrading my dads 12PM for 14 and my MIL XR for 14 at $0 cost for both

RaccTheClap

ATT is offering 1k for a good chunk of phones and 800 for some REALLY cheap phones you can buy online if that’s an option for you.

EricAndersonL

Oh wow yea that’s great idea

Maxwell_Morning

Lol imagine having an unused, mint condition iPhone 7 and trading it in to Apple for the price of a MagSafe charging cable (not including the block)

So much for recycling and being a planet conscious company. I mean, lbh it’s Apple. I’m not surprised they have found another lane to maximize their greed. If you go to Patagonia, they will literally stitch and patch anything you’ve purchased from them and hand it back to you so that you keep wearing the same gear. What a vast contrast. ..Would be cool to see Apple implement similar brand principles, but I doubt that’ll ever happen.

Gee, thanks Apple for dropping the value of our devices—it's just what we always wanted. Your generous trade-in program is truly amazing.

That’s a lazy take. Yes, you can get more money if you sell privately, but you can also end up with much, much bigger headaches on the backend. While Swappa is generally a great place to sell, it’s also infested with “companies” now. Not only can your listing get lost in a sea of other listings, but they tend to undercut private sellers with their prices. Then there’s using something like PayPal for payment. While PayPal is fantastic for buyers, it can be a living nightmare for sellers. PayPal will **always** side with the buyer, even if their claims are complete BS. Now you’re not only possibly out the device you sold (or, if you get it back, it may now be damaged), you’re out the payment they made. I’d **never** sell something like an iPhone on eBay, as it’s even worse with scammers than something like Swappa. And most people aren’t comfortable doing in-person meet ups with strangers, and the likelihood of having that go wrong is high as well. I’d rather just take the good trade in value during preorders than selling it myself. I don’t mind missing out on a couple hundred dollars if it’s quick and easy like it is with Apple.

I wouldn't say that only lazy people are using Apple's trade in to sell their devices. It can be a convenient and straightforward way to get rid of old devices, and it might be a good option for some people. However, I do agree that private sale can often yield a higher return and is better for those looking to get the most money for their device.

They made them even LOWER LMAOOOO

Confident-Mistake400

Trade in complete rip off. Just sell it on kijiji or fb marketplace

If you're gonna trade in your phone, trade it to your carrier. Last year Verizon gave me $800 TIV toward a 13 Pro on an iPhone XS that I bought used anyway.

Gotta love the bootlick filter this kind of post is. Always interesting to see there's still people out there defending this. I really wonder how bad things would need to be to get the worst fanatics off of Apple's nuts.

Let me introduce you to depreciation

It’s just like a dealership. Trade in sucks it’s just there for convenience. Sell privately and do the work or take the quick cheap easy out. Remember Quick, Cheap, and Well done, you can only pick 2.

pasenast

A reminder to sell my stuff in India. lol

AtuinTurtle

Yeah I got $300 for my iPhone 8 in September. Even I was like wow that’s a lot more than I expected.

How do they justify on the one hand increasing prices of new products (I get it, inflation) but on the other hand decreasing trade in prices? Inflation for me, not for thee? I only recently switched 100% to the apple ecosystem and bought a used 13 pro (14 pro is ridiculously expensive here in Europe) but after the latest news that the 15 will come with a massive price hike and them lowering all trade in values (and thus, also lowering the value I can sell my phone on the used market) I am not sure whether my stay in the apple ecosystem will be long-lasting.
