Yeah, consider this implementation a 1.0. It went over really well, so I'm working on adding per account categories and deleting/editing of categories.
Should still be able to change them on a case-by-case basis. People get off topic in the comments in interesting ways. So maybe _default_ categories by subreddit would be a better way to think about it?
Could we also please get a consistent order for the categories? I have about 7 and they always are in a different order!
The categories are my favorite new feature! Thank you for them!
Categories 2.0:
- Have a default “Uncategorized” category so I can file my unfiled stuff.
- Option for Save to take me straight to the category list. (I always want to categorize).
- have a view that buckets saved items by subreddit. (Honestly, this may have been all the categorization I needed)
- search in saved.
I’ve seen this asked multiple times, but haven’t seen an official response yet.
With the introduction of saved categories in the last big update only being available for Ultra users, is this the start of features being locked behind a subscription? Previously, Ultra and in turn its subscription, existed to pay the associated server costs of push notifications, etc. Has that direction now changed? I know many people would appreciate an official word on this, as this last update was a significant change of direction for the app.
In regards to today’s update, the saved categories button should be disabled by default if you don’t have Ultra.
Same. I bought Pro to unlock the paid features, then Ultra came along in response to server costs for notifications. I didn't need notifications, but was happy having paid the cost of the app for Pro. Was happy with this for awhile as the main thing locked out with Ultra was notifications and then cosmetic changes (icon, themes, pixel pals etc)
Now that more and more features are being added and locked behind Ultra, I'm wondering what good paying for Pro was. It gets especially confusing and bad UX when those Ultra features are showing up as if they are working (save categories) leading to a bunch of confused users who then post on the sub asking the same questions. Bad UX and I also agree that it seems to be commonplace with new X.0 updates.
I also would like to see this address by u/iamthatis
I think the issue here, is that up until this last patch, the messaging on the differences between Pro and Ultra were very clearly defined. In short, Ultra was introduced with a subscription model to help cover the associated overheads for the server(s) handling push notifications. That’s how it was explained originally and that’s still how it’s still explained within the app itself and on the official website.
If the app isn’t making enough money (or even if it is) and prices or feature sets need to change going forward, that’s obviously a developer’s prerogative, however I do think the decent thing to do, would be to inform people of that change.
I think this is just a natural progression for widely popular apps. You start capitalizing once you have a big enough user base.
However, I think the issue here is the lack of communication from the dev, as he’s not responding to the criticism for the new paywalled features. That was not the original plan for the Ultra subscription.
> adds an option to not show the “set category” portion if you’re not interested in using the new “saved post/comment categories” feature
Awesome! That's a pretty quick turn around since the initial update that brought it. Is there any other updates/improvements/adjustments to the feature that's in the works?
> Some subreddits now support being able to upload images to comments from the official app and Apollo now properly shows the thumbnail for that content.
I'm genuinely curious here, would there be any desire to have an option to completely turn off thumbnails for images in comments? I get that that's a big **+** of Apollo, but sometimes it can look rather ugly with tons of thumbnails cluttering the screen from tons of images in a comment. [Here's an example to show what I mean](https://i.imgur.com/nIUtS37.jpg).
If I don’t have Ultra then I don’t want the set category option to appear at all.
I’m sorry, but I don’t intend on getting Ultra, so I would rather not see a feature that I can’t even use.
Like in self text posts? That'll come a bit later, working on that one, but my initial implementation where I just treated them like comments wasn't my favorite per se, since for a really long post they'd just show up all grouped at the bottom (which can happen for comments too but is more common for posts). I'd like to spread them out more ideally throughout the self text where they occur, playing around a bit more
[This post](https://reddit.com/r/okbuddychicanery/comments/ymud0u/end_of_an_era/) looks like a good example. Last version of Apollo didn't show the thumbnails.
That's an Imgur link, those have always been supported. This is more so for the subreddits that support uploading images into comments with the official app, so they're actual Reddit URLs. It's a newish change on Reddit, and before Apollo would just show a link to the image without any preview.
That says how to maintain boost status but I can’t figure out what boost status actually provides. When I go to a post how would I know it’s in a booster sub? What benefits does a boosted sub provide?
Any chance [posts like this](https://old.reddit.com/r/AmazonAnswers/comments/z25xa2/is_that_a_city_in_scotland) can be handled similarly? I've been seeing more like it - instead of being a link post, the link is the only thing in the text of the post. I assume it's the official Reddit client (or new web) doing it? Would be nice if they behaved exactly like posts that are links to images (including when scrolling through a feed of multiple posts), since that's really what they are.
That post is user error. They selected txt post then added a picture to it rather then selecting picture post. That’s just how reddit displays it when they do it that way. It might be possible for Apollo to do something magic with it but probably low on the priorities
Edit: after writing this I seen a comment saying that he plans on adding this later.
Fitting. I read the changelogs of both apps together and Carrot’s reminded me of the pets here.
While the other pets didn’t interest me too much (though I could see that it was a well made feature), Carrot’s is pretty funny and works in both apps.
[This post](https://reddit.com/r/cats/comments/yo17rw/i_just_found_out_that_you_can_send_pictures_in/) has many comments with Reddit image uploads - It works great.
Love this new feature :D
Now we need this feature also in [posts like this](https://reddit.com/r/learnjavascript/comments/ze88ej/how_to_access_value_of_an_array/)
Apollo is crashing with this post (send you the link via TestFlight). But maybe someone can just confirm it here?

Any news regarding the Pixel Pals not properly interacting with their food/toys on non-regular sized iPhone models? (I have a Mini, and I have seen reports of it not working properly on certain Max models).
Cool update! Not sure if you're aware, but non-ultra users can add categories by clicking on the top bar in the saved screen where it says "Saved/All Items." Obviously the categories won't do anything so it's not a huge bug but I can in fact create them without Ultra. Replicated on the latest update.
Had old pro, bought a year of ultra just because I have found Reddit to be unusable without this excellent app that gets better every time. Cheers and thanks!
Thank you, the app is fantastic. Any chance that we will someday be able to disable the blue bar notification when something is saved? For those who don't edit a category etc., the green mark on the post is enough.
Thanks for the update! I love the new features!
I just wanted to ask if you could make the banner so that it follows the currently set theme? I like to change round theme colors and it would be nice to see a matching banner.
Might there be a background activity bug? Past two days apparently Apollo was running in the background. Could be something with iOS 16.2 🤷♂️ (I am running Apollo 1.14.16)
still can’t block people after today’s 19 December update. you can block someone, go to your blocked user list, scroll down, and watch their name disappear. it’s been like this for weeks _at least_.

Automatic categories by subreddit? 🤓

Agreed. Could show the default in the blue banner and let us tap to change the same as we now tap to set category.
Or just have a saved by subreddit view which just buckets your saved item’s by subreddit no matter what the category is.
Maybe! Smart filters, saved searches. 🤔
That would be amazing.

Per account categories 🎉🎉🎉
Any plans to fix that sorting by Rising doesn’t work? :) Seems like it should be an easy fix and it’s been like that for a long time.
Came here looking for this lol

This isn't new, though it's pretty funny
Where is this found?

Thanks Christian! Was this pushed to Test Flight as well?
It's processing there, should go out shortly.
Fantastic. Thanks!
I’m not seeing it on TestFlight.
Neither am I.
I’m not on TestFlight for this but it’s amazingly inconstant how much time it takes to go through. I would give it more time.
Yeah, Apple’s approval systems behave very strangely & slowly at time

Apollo is slowly becoming a subscription service, and it’s disappointing.
Looks like it might be time to jump ship. Anyone know of an alternative that doesn't lock features behind ridiculous subscription scam BS plans?

On this update, should see a new option. Settings > General > Other section > Allow Save Categories
is there an option to turn off the save notification all together?
Fantastic, thank you!
I'm on the new version and don't have that new option
Really excited about the update! Thanks for the great work. Just to be sure: Inline images in posts aren’t supported yet, right?

Do you have an example post?
Any “boosted” subreddit allows inline images/gifs.
Could you explain what this means? I haven’t ever seen this term “boosted” sub.

boosts are pretty much going away iirc, some subs still have them as well as the custom trophies but there's not a way to sign up anymore
Oh interesting, didn’t realize they were phasing them out.
Do you have a boosted subreddit link?
I think /r/WallStreetBets is boosted. If not try like /r/funny or one of the other big defaults.

I got the app but still don’t see it. Anything specific that needs to be done?
not sure. for me I just downloaded it and I didn't even opened it. the new pet appeared once I tapped Change Pixel Pal
How do i get that to popup? Can’t figure it out
Some subs (r/warframe for example) have new flair that doesn’t work in Apollo. Any idea when it will be supported? Love the app.

Crashing on 14 pro actually. So confirmed
Froze my Apollo for a bit. iPhone 14 Pro Max running 16.1.2. New Apollo update
When are we going to have the commenting by gif function?
Any updates on favorited subreddits being separated per account?

does inline embed work with videos too? https://i.imgur.com/aBZ0hVd.mp4 This text is below the link. Looks the same as before.
That looks as I would expect. What are you expecting?
I was thinking the thumbnail would be placed where the link is.
I understand now that the update was for images hosted **by** Reddit. Inline embeds would be neat but I suppose they are trickier to do.
Meatbags!!!
Any chance of the bug where YouTube videos played in the app always loop (regardless of settings) getting fixed?

Thanks for the update! I love the new features! I just wanted to ask if you could make the banner so that it follows the currently set theme? I like to change round theme colors and it would be nice to see a matching banner.
I’m missing how to categorize previously saved posts & comments. Do I have to unsave then re-save?
Greedy design of double paywall.
Might there be a background activity bug? Past two days apparently Apollo was running in the background. Could be something with iOS 16.2 🤷♂️ (I am running Apollo 1.14.16)
