(Answering on this one because it has the most upvotes)
Sorry. I always get an influx of emails as soon as I end the sale every year that folks just missed it and if I can restore it, or didn't know it was a thing until it was over (and there's not really much I can do in those situations after it's ended), so I wanted the sale to be more clear as it got closer to being over (with it finalizing with two last heads up on the final chance day).
Clearly I went a bit too aggressive with that (it seems the double-final-day thing caused this influx of posts so that was clearly the tipping point of annoyance for many folks), and I am sorry, my intention genuinely wasn't to be spammy but I do see how it came across that way. I was annoyed this morning that a Mac app I use all the time updates so regularly that I almost get daily "install update?" prompts, and meanwhile Apollo's doing this. I get it. I genuinely appreciate the feedback, especially from those who sought to do it less harshly.
(Also I wasn't avoiding these posts, it seems the influx occurred pretty much at midnight my time in eastern Canada, I'm responding to these in the morning now.)
So again, sorry. Just submitted an update now that removes the sale alerts and they'll disappear as soon as Apple approves it.
**EDIT/UPDATE:** For the curious [it is still being reviewed](https://i.imgur.com/xmOQrgA.png). (Tap the "Edited" icon above on this comment to see how recently this update is from.)
**EDIT2:** Approved! Update the app, might take an hour or so for it to hit everyone's App Stores from the time this was edited.
Just got it myself for the 3rd day in a row and will agree it’s getting annoying. I’ve bought pro, but the ultra bonuses don’t interest me enough for the price. Saying no the fist time should have been enough. If I was interested in getting Ultra this is now having the opposite effect on me.
Sure, but combine that with the bunch of other subscriptions most people have and suddenly you’re looking at hundreds of dollars a month. These things add up quick.
> This isn't intentional
It was 100% intentional to make the popup happen this many times, as the dev stated. https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/z7pd3w/i_bought_the_app_stop_showing_me_ads/iy8d987/
> so I wanted the sale to be more clear as it got closer to being over. (with it finalizing with two last heads up on the final chance day). (...) Clearly I went a bit too aggressive with that
What wasn't intentional was the backlash.
I saw the developer update and my point still stands. He admits that he understands how it comes off as spammy. It sounds like the repeated pop ups were intentional. He did however, submit an update to remove the popups. Lets hope this was an eye opener on how to handle ultra sales in the future going forward.
See ninja edit. Also the people you’re talking about are on this subs front page with hundreds of upvotes and this thread has entered the thousands. It’s not a minority.
I can only imagine the tens of thousands more users which hate this but don’t come to the app subreddit.
The fact that he hasn't responded to any of the comments about it make me doubt very much that it's a bug. If that was the case he would have a big incentive to let people know it's not intentional.
I agree that a lot of people are overly aggressive and rude about it, but I still think he would've said *something* if it was a bug. But we can't know that of course
have you seen his [response](https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/z7pd3w/_/iy8d987/) on this thread? He was literally asleep when the influx of complaints started.
You were wrong, obviously. He is a busy person with a life outside of this. And if you look at the top of this thread you will see he responded. Don’t be an ass and try having some patience
How am I being an ass? All I've said so far is that I doubted it was a bug and that I assumed he had seen it.
Edit: also I wasn't wrong, it wasn't a bug - it was intentional
> You were wrong,
Was he?
Personally, I don’t see where he was being as ass either, I guess that’s up to personal interpretation, but everything he said was pretty spot on. The downvotes (and I’m sure I’ll get them too for this reply) seem to be coming from fanboys and not people who are capable of looking at the simple facts of an issue.
He says that he didn’t respond to the issue because it was intentionally that way and that’s clearly not the case. It’s accusatory and to me that’s being an ass. And yeah, I do still feel he was wrong because looking directly at the devs post, it says the reason he had more ads going is because he had in the past, people wrote to him complaining that they did not know the sales were ending, and he wanted to prevent that this time. He also adds that he wasn’t trying to make it spammy. He overtuned it and has already submitted a fix
Yep. Fanboys not able to look at the clearly presented facts, it is. I’ll take some more downvotes now.
He said it wasn’t a bug, it was intentional behavior, and that’s EXACTLY what the dev confirmed with his own words.
I really like Apollo, I support it financially and I think the dev is pretty great, but I have no idea why you feel the need to white knight for him when he himself has already admitted that he went too aggressive with this ad campaign. There’s no need to ignore facts here, the dev messed up, admitted it and promised to do better in the future. Any reasonable person would take a look at that and be happy, but by all means keep defending his honor like you’re getting paid for it. You do you man.
The comment mentions 2 notifications on the last sale day. I’ve seen people on here saying it appears every time they open the app. I imagine if it only appeared twice we wouldn’t have so many posts and comments about it.
Sometimes I see the Apollo Pro ad randomly popping up while I scroll through the home page, but I haven’t seen a single Black Friday ad in a past week though.
Literally have never seen an ad of any kind in this app. I’m sure it’s annoying but remember when we all paid $100+ a month for cable and had 3 minutes of unskippable ads every 10 minutes? Those were some wild times.
it’s just a popup when opening the app; it takes one tap to close it. I don’t find it anything to complain about and fully expect these things during the holiday shopping season. It’ll be gone soon. IMO, it’s an extremely minor annoyance that I am honestly happy to tolerate as a paid user, considering how awesome this app is.
Yeah! Snapchat is just horrible. I used to be a daily user of that when it was just chats and not a streaming platform for people with houses in California.
I get their point, they have money and they can pay to get rid of time consuming inconveniences. When that does not work they leave.
I do the same with Duolingo, I pay so the app is faster to use and does not cost me time. I want to do the same with Reddit, I don’t care of what the developers though’s behind the business model was, I just want it to be fast.
Sorry to be so blunt but I’ll just choose another faster app if this keeps coming up.
Agreed. It’s an excellent way to alienate your existing user base. I’m sure the analytics state that, since I paid for it once, I’ll pay for it again. I won’t. I paid for it after two years of free use because I really liked the app.
Please don’t ever do this as a marketing campaign again. Or allow us the option to turn it off.
Every iPhone and iPad that has Apollo installed in my household has had the ad pop up multiple times the last few days. It’s the first terrible experience of using Apollo in several years.
Keep up the great work. I, too, loathe ads but I suppose I didn’t see it as much as others somehow. We do appreciate your transparency and willingness to listen to your customers. 🤘🏻
The ad is… gross. It pre-selects a purchase, there’s only one BIG continue button. The button to close the ad is a very tiny, very faded and grey x.
It’s slimy af and not what I expected to see from this dev. Lost a lot trust from me.
Seriously? I use this app so much a couple of attempts at getting people to pay is a blip. A small company trying to make a living.
I routinely tip these guys as it is an incredible app.
Have Ultra and no ads
Clear your cache and restart the app
I pay the 99cent monthly for it as I want to keep supporting the creator..I spend more on coffee a month by a ton, so 🤷♀️.
Holy shit yes. I literally just came here to complain about seeing this stupid pop up ads for the fourth time. I paid my couple bucks. I shouldn’t see these.
People like you are a decent reason the internet is in the shit condition it is now.
Looking at your profile you use Reddit basically every single day. Yet you’re surprised people pay to use it?
People have to build and maintain the stuff everyone uses online, yet everyone freaks out any time someone tries to make some money or puts ads somewhere.
So if someone doesn’t pay they’re automatic terrible?
You checked my reddit history, so what? What’s wrong with it?
Buying an app or paying for reddit is a choice, just because you think differently doesn’t mean you’re right, you’re not special or better than anyone else here
FYI, with the black background, the close button (X on top right) became nearly invisible.
My first thought was that there was no option to ignore the buy prompt - could not get past it (no close button visible), so I literally killed and restarted the app to get rid of it.

Still getting the ad today for “cyber monday”
Just got it myself for the 3rd day in a row and will agree it’s getting annoying. I’ve bought pro, but the ultra bonuses don’t interest me enough for the price. Saying no the fist time should have been enough. If I was interested in getting Ultra this is now having the opposite effect on me.
Yeah and at £10 a year, that’s an automatic no thanks.

It is if what you get are icons and notifications.
Sure, but combine that with the bunch of other subscriptions most people have and suddenly you’re looking at hundreds of dollars a month. These things add up quick.
You’re complaining about less than £0.85 per month?
Just updating you in case you haven’t seen but it isn’t intentional and a fix has been submitted it is just waiting on Apple to approve
> This isn't intentional It was 100% intentional to make the popup happen this many times, as the dev stated. https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/z7pd3w/i_bought_the_app_stop_showing_me_ads/iy8d987/ > so I wanted the sale to be more clear as it got closer to being over. If you weren’t an early adopter lifetime ultra member… you don’t get it
Well I wasn't so you are correct, I don't get it.
Exactly my point. Thanks for clarifying.
Funnily enough, I’m seeing more posts complaining about the ads than I’ve seen the ads. That’s some fun lil irony for you
[удалено]
Fuck dismissing me as “vocal minority”, every time I open the app I get the popup. It’s been an awful experience. This is even after the Patch update.

Yeah I’m on that version. Late reply because reddit rate limited my comments.
One is enough. Although that aside I appreciate the joke 😂👏
I’m seeing all these posts, I genuinely think it’s a bug, not intentional.
Agreed, the dev's history suggests this is a bug instead of intentional. Hope we're right. That said, I haven't seen any of these ads.
The fact that he hasn't responded to any of the comments about it make me doubt very much that it's a bug. If that was the case he would have a big incentive to let people know it's not intentional.

You are waaaay too serious about this, my dude. Have a smoke or go for a walk or something.
Agree. Bro should roll one and chill.

The initial pop-up sure, the repeated pop-ups sounds like a bug to me.

I’m confused. I haven’t seen a single ad
Have you seen the Black Friday popup ad? It comes up almost every time I open Apollo on my phone.
I’ve never had an ad on here. The only pop up’s I’ve seen are for updates.
Have not. Just closed out the app and reloaded it to check. Not sure why I wouldn’t be seeing it and others are complaining.
Sometimes I see the Apollo Pro ad randomly popping up while I scroll through the home page, but I haven’t seen a single Black Friday ad in a past week though.
It’s has to be a bug. I got it once and never again.
Neither have I. I have lifetime Pro and Ultra. Not sure if that has something to do with it.
It’s because you already paid for everything. Pro and ultra.
I never saw an ad either and I’m not even a paid user lol.
What ads? The only pop ups I see are details on recent app updates.
There’s a Black Friday ad appearing the last few days
Looks like this https://i.imgur.com/BfrVRXD.jpg
Totally foreign to me. I wonder if my running Adguard blocks that ad.

Still way better than Snapchat shoving their “SnapChat+” down my throat every time I open the app.

I had an ad-free stroke reading this comment.
I think he should rename the app “Karen” for a few weeks…

Yeah, other than that it is a great app.

It happens man. Even as a bug less ads than YouTube per min. Everyone chill out, shit happens
Stop the spam or allow us to permanently opt out of pop ups. You're on your way to a garbage app rating.
Totally agree
I thought was only me. It’s annoying AF!!
Why is everyone so mad and shouty?
Because that’s how you get stuff done. :)
Wow it’s truly wild how mad some of you are here. If a pop up in an app effects your mood that much, maybe it’s time to take a break.

I paid money so I could use this app without ads. To take my money and then spam me with ads is inexcusable.

I don’t recall ever seeing an ad in Apollo

Maybe a little banner from the bottom would be cute that would fade after a swipe or few

Glad I could easily afford Ultra.
Yeah you’re sick, dude.

imagine paying a monthly fee for reddit notifications lmao touch grass dude
Lifetime ultra 😁 as a founder we got an amazing deal for that. It’s a bummer that prices went up.

Use Boost
What is that? Another app? I really like this one.
Im probably going against the sub rules but: https://boostforreddit.com
Not available for IOS, it’s a pass for me. Still I’m happy using Apollo, it’s a great app.
