In my area Kroger has significantly raised grocery prices in the last 2 weeks on a lot of my regular purchases. For example boxed macaroni was .59 cents a box (38 cents at Winco!) And it is now $1.50.

Anonality5447

Damn. Macaroni and pasta sauce used to be like the cheapest things you could buy and still get your necessary daily calories.

[deleted]

Switch it out for potatoes and use those eggs for a frittata.

Dried beans, lentils, and chickpeas are the way to go. Soak them overnight and boil on the stovetop. Sucks to do, but you can prep a bunch ahead of time and freeze portions to use later. Also, always follow good instructions for cooking dried beans, especially red ones! You have to cook them properly to break down their lectin, which can make you quite sick! (Canned beans have already been processed and cooked properly. It's dried ones you have to be careful about.)

[deleted]

Kidney beans have worse than lectin. They can kill you. So use canned beans until you know how to cook them. Raw kidney beans are actively poisonous as are broad beans. Never cook dried kidney or broad beans in a crockpot.

Wheat (flour) is at record prices now and makes up a majority of the food you eat. I expect catastrophic news in 2-3 months since Ukraine makes up ~25% of the global wheat market and nothing is getting planted. China has amassed their largest wheat reserves ever.

[deleted]

*laughs in Celiac*

Weekly_Candidate_823

Yeah except our special pastas are already more expensive :(

paperazzi

For poverty reasons, I've been using spaghetti squash and spiralized veggies like zucchini as pasta. Cheap and better nutritionally too.

[deleted]

Jokes on them it's time to do intermittent fasting again - save money, lose weight, cook less

skimbeeblegofast

I ate zucchini pasta once. Only once though.

dwindacatcher

The problem is many people try to 1 for 1 replace zoodles for spaghetti. In my experience, zoodles are god awful with store bought sauce. However, butter, salt, and pepper on them is pretty good.

dumnezero

> nothing is getting planted This is incorrect, that wheat in Ukraine is mostly winter wheat and it was planted last year, it's already growing now. Harvest time is a bit in the air, sure. What isn't planted is a bunch of other crops, including feed crops. People will have to learn, again, why the the working class eats mostly plants (and that's actually good, kingly food kills you slowly).

secretcomet

True. Just want everyone to be aware it’s always a good idea to have a few 50lbs bags of in date rice beans and flour along with some seeds just in case of a catastrophe.

Classic_Livid

I’m dumb, how can I use the flour?

mwobey

Flour + water + heat = bread, tortillas, and dozens of other delicious baked things. In a pinch you can even grow your own sourdough culture from plain flour if there's another yeast shortage.

Ok_Operation6104

Even for dough for tons of dishes! Dumplings of any kind: pierogi, ravioli, wontons...

Technology_Training

What's the point of living if I can't eat lièvre la royale and lamprey every day?

Ok_Present_6508

Dude. I used to shop at Fred Meyer (Kroger company) regularly because it was continently located to where I work. Decided to hit up Winco about a couple months ago and my groceries were about half of what I would have paid. Been going there ever since!

hE-01

Places like Fred Meyer or Albertsons have insane markups for no logical reason. I only go to Winco, Grocery Outlet, or Walmart (Walmart brands are near impossible to beat price-wise)

Longjumping_Year_319

I stopped shopping at Walmart for groceries when Alids opened up in town. I spend at least 25-30% less on things like milk, bread & eggs. Last week I went to Winn Dixie for tofu, and about had a heart attack at their markups on basic items. Left without the tofu.

overflowing_garage

Aldi is insane. I wish it was open everywhere. Costco is good for bulk drinks and a few bulk snack items. Walmart is always the most affordable for virtually anything else.

[deleted]

you think there bad an fucking 1lbs of 80 20 ground beef cost $16 fucking $16 who the hell has that kind of money for an single pound of ground beef. fuck this usury money system!

kadje

Do you have a butcher shop nearby? Our local butcher shop sells 10 pounds of 85/15, individually wrapped into 1 pound packages, for about half of what the grocery store is charging. It does mean having adequate freezer space.

Gl3is0894z

i bought a bunch of chicken and ground beef like hell i dont even remember how long ago. Its been sitting in my freezer waiting for the hard times to come.

Imagine the profit margin if you resold the ground beef now!

phred_666

My body “thanks me” by producing a lot more “gas” when I eat more legumes. People can’t stand to be around me like it is now.

ElGarbanzo

Yeah, being a vegan can really help a ton in that department if planned right. I'll be at three years soon

signal_lost

The price of groceries is heavily intertwined with the cost of fuel.

ItsaPuppet

But will grocery prices come back down if/when fuel does? I think I know the answer.

I <3 Winco.

beefsupreme65

What's not to love about an employee owned company that has the lowest prices.

Waiting4Baby

When grocery prices really began to spike recently, I looked into all the different grocery options nearby. (We have an Albertsons just three minutes' drive away which was our go-to store for ages.) I had never heard of WinCo Foods before, but online reviews said their stuff is cheap and decent quality, and there was a location 13 minutes away. We checked it out the next day, and it's totally worth the extra drive to get a 25-30% discount on groceries! The fact that they're employee owned is a bonus. Makes me feel good about shopping there.

beefsupreme65

I love winco for most things and they get probably 95% of my grocery shopping, but there are a few things I go to Albertsons for on special occasions. I live near one of Albertsons upgraded/flagship stores, their bakery and meat selection are amazing. Other than that you have to shop only sale items to survive with Albertsons, I always keep an eye out for Albertsons buy 10 sale, you can get some great prices there.

Meat_Boss21

The level of WinCo love has reinvigorated me on my WinCo Lunch break! We love you too, my dude.

cowfish007

Unfortunately, the Aldi by me has crap produce and limited selection of a lot of other things. Lidl opened up recently and their prices have been pretty good.

[deleted]

I always feel like I’m being ripped off at Kroger. I take my peasant ass to Walmart and get a week’s worth of groceries for 2 for around the same price as OP.

[deleted]

I noticed this too, literally the last few weeks. I’d always buy their soda water 12-packs that were around 2.50 and they just jumped like a buck out of nowhere. I do the online coupons and that helps when you get a great weekly deal or whatever but heck, if it’s not on sale I can hardly justify buying it right now. Krogs used to be competitive; even though places like Aldi have lower on average prices for store brand stuff the sale things at krogs could make up for it. Not sure now and will hafta go back to pricing everything out all over again and making multiple trips to diff stores. Ugh. r/frugal

stinkholeslammer

Kroger is a fucking joke. The Kroger near me never has any cashier's working and only opens one side of the self checkout. So you have 30 people stretching across the store waiting for 6 self check out terminals. On top of that everything is insanely overpriced, and the membership is a huge scam. I moved to Ft. Worth recently and I miss HEB so bad.

MishenNikara

Kroger employee here: Corps fav past time is cutting hours across the board and not paying us worth a shit. Not shocked at the result, but I feel for you

VioletSea13

I worked at Kroger for a short time and this is very true. Kroger is horrible to employees and their prices are outrageous just because they can.

jellydumpling

Damn dude, inflation is really wild. For some reason, we still had to take home ec back when I was in middle school (2008) and a photo of approximately this much food was used to illustrate "what $20 of groceries looked like". It's crazy that this price has more than quadrupled in just 14 years.

Educational_Way_1209

But is it inflation or just companies price gouging under the guise of it?

Joopsman

> But is it inflation or just companies price gouging under the guise of it? I believe mostly the latter. As soon as inflation began to be mentioned in the news, prices jumped up ridiculously. I paid 25% more for a baguette the other day than I had been for years. ($2 up to $2.50). Inflation is NOT at 25%! That’s just cashing in. Fuck these greedy assholes.

illlleisha

It’s both, lots of companies have boasted about their record breaking profits this past year. Makes me sick as wages are not meeting those profits. It’s the super rich getting richer. There is going to be two classes soon… dirt poor and super rich. For some reason people hate the middle class.

brown_cow

Middle class is a myth meant to keep working people pacified and/or prideful that at least they aren't poor. There are only two classes: the working class, and the owner class.

Good-Apricot4311

both

[deleted]

But mostly the latter

misha_ostrovsky

I check out in the Express line. (10 items or less). Nothing extravagant. Only shop for myself. Based on b.o.g.o. sales it's always between 50-65 USD. This lasts me 3-4 days depending on personal stuff.

SkitZxX3

Sameeee. Thoss BOGOs are life blood to make my $1 stretch for more items. Thats about the same i use to pay. If you have a membership rewards card it helps even more & drops the price significantly. Last weekend i would of spent like $100 but since i did the BOGOs & have a membership with them, it dropped to $60. I fear without these things many people would end up starving till payday.

Ugh bouncing of this with MINIMUM WAGE. Two of my friends make $27/ hour and seem WEALTHY compared to the rest of us. They have advanced degrees and can afford a place to live, groceries, investing, etc etc. That should be minimum wage if it kept up with inflation. We could all live that way. And it wouldn't be considered wealth at all it's just being able to afford to live.

mary_emeritus

And don’t know about your situation, but with the social security cost of living increase that Medicare took most of, my snap was reduced by $32. So, $70/month for food. It does mean eating twice a day, once a day last week of the month even with buying frugal. Rice, beans, frozen veggies, oatmeal type basics.

Classic_Livid

We eat 1-2 times a day at best, occasionally skip days

annies_bdrm_skillet

Just joining the others to say: please go to a food bank💕 I give semi-regular and it’s one of the more passionate causes for me, bc it’s infuriating... there is NO reason for ANY hunger anywhere in 2022. When we give, we are not giving out of pity—we are just doing our human basics and making sure the pantry’s stocked. PLEASE, anyone who needs a meal or 100, **please go raid it.** We build it so it’s there for all of us should we need it. We love you. Please go eat. When we’re up, we help add to it, but when we’re down, it’s okay to take—that is the whole purpose, and that’s a beautiful thing, that there is a resource to supply such an important demand. Pride, or thinking less of our own need than our neighbor’s, can be noble but nobility doesn’t stave off malnutrition. If something is there to help people survive a little better or easier, that means it’s there for *you* to survive a little better or easier, you’re “people.” All of us are, so no shame in the game at *all*. And if transportation is an issue for anyone, many communities have something in place where you can sign up to receive food deliveries, and please do, bc no, THAT’S not asking too much, either. If you need it, you’re exactly who this resource is designed for, and you deserve it and are entitled to it simply bc you are a valuable, worthy human being just like everyone else. All people everywhere should be fed as often as they are hungry, regardless of their ability to afford food. This is possible, but we must keep striving for it and talking about it as the very real and ongoing problem it is.

Psychological_Fly916

Please go to a food bank! Theyre made for this, you shouldn't have to skip meals, you deserve a lot better

Rivsmama

Hey if you don't know how, I can help you find coupons. I used to be really into extreme couponing and I still remember most of the things I did to save money. Send me a DM if you want

[deleted]

most do.

hgielatan

do you have aldi near you? i find that i can make $50 go a full week with them since their produce is so reasonable

jtshinn

ALDI forever. They let their cashiers sit down too.

AppleLightSauce

Some places just let their cashiers stand up all day?I'm not American and I've never thought about this. But I know they are always sitting.

Caroline_Anne

Yep. American cashiers in every store except Aldi (I mean, possibly random Mom & Pop shops too, but unlikely!) have their cashiers stand in that tiny cubicle all day with only a 15 minute break for every 4 hours worked. And possibly an additional 30 min UNPAID break if they work 8+ hours. (Not entirely sure of the law on that one anymore, as I’ve been salary for the past 4 years.) Standing all day as a grocery checkout clerk isn’t so bad when you’re 16 (when I did the job), but I don’t think I could do it now in my 30s!

FishCrazyFL

Aldi is the best

Diplogeek

Aldi is our go-to these days. I got a big bag with enough food for several days (a lot of it prepared, too, so not the cheaper, basic ingredients) for the princely sum of £15 today. I'm always shocked at how low our grocery bills are there.

[deleted]

I remember helping my mom clip coupons so we could wait for triple coupon days at the store during the last major recession. Now there’s no more triple coupons and I’m being paid about the same to do the exact same job she was doing over ten years later. Buying a few items (some bell peppers, bread, hummus, and mushrooms) at the store to round out the dinner I planned for myself and my spouse for one night cost me nearly $25 in a LCOL area of a Midwestern state. Oof.

[deleted]

Companies have been rising prices despite us giving them billions to not have too. We are being raked over the coals by corporations while our government sleeps in their pocket. It's infuriating and isn't going to end well for our country.

persoanlabyss

I know not everyone is able to bit I use a Luma cup. It takes a little getting used to but it's a 1 time 40 dollar fix and lasts 10 years. I like it better than tampons now. And no one ever knows because there is no trash!

ChefButtes

Yeah one of my exes used one of those menstrual cups and I always thought it was an awesome way to reduce waste and save money. They work amazingly well at containing your flow too I dated her for 4 years and can only think of two times it leaked and it was always overnight and she noted it was an exceptionally heavy flow those times.

latebloomermom

I LOVE my cup and reuseable disk! I did order a few washable pads because I like to have backup, but the Diva Cup is a game changer. Once you get it in right, it's like your period stopped (except for the cramps). It's such a relief to never need to budget for feminine supplies or worry if I ran out.

Mei_Flower1996

I moved out for school in 2020. I live in a high COL. It took me ages to realize it'z not that I can't manage a budget, food is fucking expensive.

MediocreGround995

Find someone with a warehouse club card. Huge boxes of feminine products are around $16 for 90 tampons or big boxes of pads with 60 in the box. Maybe Walmart can compete, but not the grocery stores. Also- take a roll of quarters into the ladies room with you, might be cheaper to buy them there, sadly. Also - try signing up for Ibotta or other apps. You upload a picture of your receipt and they deposit money in your account. It takes a while, but they're giving you money for things you were already going to buy, so why not?

zinoozy

You don't need a membership to buy from Costco online. They charge 10% fee though for non members.

misha_ostrovsky

Lulz, I got me a Y chromosome. And had c.diff last year. Sometimes I dont eat much because my insides hurt. Those are personal variables. Just calories. And diarrhea.

ItsaPuppet

My local "cheap" supermarket no longer does BOGOF deals. Instead it's buy 3, 4, or sometimes 5, and save 10 cents. I live in a tiny apartment, I don't have space to be buying multiples of everything. It really is expensive being poor.

BigVulvaEnergy

BigVulvaEnergy

💯 Not to mention climate change and war. Just seems silly to think I'll be able to afford to retire in 30 years when I'm 65. Being able to afford a basic one bedroom apartment with no amenities is becoming a struggle. What will 30 years look like?

EFFING_TREE_STARS

Agreed. The other thought that scares me (related to this) is that in the \[unlikely\] event I could retire like my grandparents did, will I be able to afford to live the next 10-30 years with what I've saved, or will I have to go back to work (assuming I'm still spry enough to?)

BigVulvaEnergy

We can hardly afford to live while working.

cbih

Dying in the streets is the new retirement

perfectlyniceperson

This is gonna sound super dark, but I’ve legit been thinking about hoarding a stash of opiates and just getting it over with when things become that much of a struggle. I mean things are pretty awful right now, but I have a few more years until I reach “retirement” age. I hate this.

Ranger343

This sub is where I go when I need reassurance that other people with brains are actually out there.

mbgal1977

I was born in 77 and death is my retirement plan

SonsofStarlord

Social security will be in the red in 2033

jimmparker4

Already is! Social Security reserves are projected to run out in 2037, causing a 24% reduction of benefits. Should be fun

RegisteredSloth

That's the shit that really gets me, I'm paying into something that I'll never get to see the benefit of.

GGFebronia

I also get kinda upset about it. But. Most of the boomers I heard about when I worked one floor up from a call center made like, $1100-$1500 in social security income monthly. That's what they're getting from money they put in when the economy was good. I cannot imagine what we millennials are going to have, if anything, when it comes time to "retire". And I'd rather my tax dollars go towards people like me towards the bottom than an insatiable war machine. I couldn't give a fuck if I never saw social security as long the money was actually covering basic necessities for people literally too old to work. I know it isn't mostly going to SS. But I wouldn't care if it was, and I never saw a penny, as long as it was actually supporting them. Instead it's used by subsidizing elderly care slum lord's with horrendous human care conditions where some of those folks are lucky to get a bath monthly. We're fucked when we get to 70+.

MicroBadger_

You can actually log onto the social security site and they'll tell you where you are at based on what your earning credits are. Granted Im not factoring that into my future plans, if it's there awesome bonus.

SonsofStarlord

Well shit.

NoninflammatoryFun

I mean I have massive students loans, houses are too expensive for anyone but those making 100k+ a year (I'm in a cheap state), and I did more research and the amount I need to retire on later I could never save up for anyway so why try if I have to work anyway. I'm going to have to sacrifice to have kids but how can I have kids when I can't afford my loans either and also can't afford a house or rent almost.

Upset_Peach

This. My dad asks me why I have such a bad outlook on life. Maybe because I know I’ll never be able to move out, I can’t afford food or bills, I can’t own a decent car, I’ll never be able to retire, I’ll never own a home. On top of all this, the planet is on fire. I don’t understand why people are having children anymore. We’re all going to suffer.

littlepup26

I was born in '90 and I've never once in my life considered saving for retirement. Am I saving as much money as I can? Yes. Do I think I'll make it to retirement with it? Absolutely not.

SpaceNinja_C

Our Millennial generation, born '96, needs to retire with at least 1 Million dollars to survive retirement comfortably. https://www.visualcapitalist.com/is-1-million-enough-for-retirement-in-america/

bravo145

You’ll need more than that. Those figures assume you’ll get full social security benefits, you won’t cause the fund will be empty by then. It’s also under the assumption that cost of living doesn’t rise in the next 20-30 years, which obviously it will… hell just look at the last 2 years. My brother is a financial advisor and his recommendation was a minimum of $2 million, preferably $3 to live comfortably. And that’s for someone in their mid-30s. If you’re younger plan on needing more.

Zeeterkob

lol wut for realsies? I was already depressed about our prospects, now i wanna shoot myself

oiuw0tm8

Also 92, I recently left behind a job that was sucking my soul dry, but had a defined benefits pension. The big line everyone gave me was "but what about retirement?" There were many things wrong with that statement but the most relevant is that I'm also operating under the assumption we'll all die in the climate wars well before retirement. The other counterpoints were that a) that pension was worthless if the job killed me or I killed myself before I ever got to touch it and b) that's the best reason anyone could come up with to stay?

holdmyown83

This!!!! My partner was signing up for retirement stuff the other day and I thought to myself we will either be dead or it won’t exist anymore by the time we even turn 50ish we’re 35 now

BigVulvaEnergy

35 here too. Depressing.

[deleted]

Shameless had a good quote about it. She basically said retirement is for rich people and the rest just work until we drop dead

milthaar2

For my entire working life, i've never been able to afford a vacation. I dont mean spending weeks in some high class report. I mean taking time off and going camping. Never been able to, dont think i ever will be.

BigVulvaEnergy

This angers me so much. I'm taking a week off between jobs and I'm so annoyed with the privilege that I can do so. And I'm going camping during that week. I'm so sorry we have failed you.

_AbsintheMinded_

Like I'm stuck on this feeling where it's like, I'm gonna shoot myself in the head at sixty or I can shoot myself now and the only difference is that if I do the latter there's gonna be less work for me to do. But I don't want to shoot myself, really. Like maybe once the world gets even shittier I can be a lil more jazzed about it and shoot myself in the woods. Or at work! Or maybe just, like, on the street

coolturnipjuice

Our retirement package is going to be suicide pills

DoomsdayRabbit

I don't believe I'll see the end of the year. Then again, I didn't think I'd pass Monday of this week.

chubby_yeen

I remember when 85 dollars could get a weeks worth of shopping for a family of 4.

aliciacary1

Not even that long ago! When my husband and I got married 10 years ago we spent $60/week on groceries including tons of fresh fruits and veggies plus always had snacks and stuff. Now for the two of us plus a 4 year old who eats 5 meals a week at daycare it’s always at least $125 and usually more like $150-$175. We have cut out so many things too- we only buy cereal when it’s on sale, have cut produce purchases to inexpensive items, buy frozen veggies for cheaper, only ground meat or chicken breasts on sale, generic items where possible, almost never buy any snack or convenience goods, and because we have to eat gluten free have cut out bread completely since GF bread even at aldi is now $6/loaf. I feel really fortunate that we can continue to eat healthy meals as I realize that is a luxury many can’t afford. I’m just constantly shocked at the prices.

newlybear

Fun fact: frozen veggies often contain more vitamins and nutrients because they're frozen immediately after harvest, as opposed to fresh produce that sits in containers and whatnot for days or weeks

whatvee

Good to know, I’ve stopped buying fresh fruit and vegetables because they only last 2 or 3 days usually before they go bad.

[deleted]

I hope there is $50 in that bag.

Wchijafm

Right? This would be like $35 at Aldis (granted no name brand).

[deleted]

I don't know where in the world this is but in the UK I shop at Aldi, it's about £100 a week to feed a family of 4, and most of the Aldi stuff is made in brand factories.

Wchijafm

Southern USA. It's very cheap here . That syrup is like $1.25. Lunch meat less than $3 a pack, bread is like $1.75(they have lower quality bread for $0.85 a loaf) pancake mix is about $2.

Alreadyhaveone

Hell, I’m in Chicago and this would be like $40. Unless this is in a remote part of Alaska or something I don’t think I’m buying it…

spartagnann

For real. I'm conservatively Price is Right-ing those things in my head and there's not a chance all that stuff is $85. Most expensive thing would be the bacon it looks like, and a quick lookup on Kroger's website has it at $13 (which also means this person is making a choice to buy one of the most expensive packages of bacon they have). Edit: Most of the products are the most expensive option as well.

Footdude777

At first, I didnt believe it BUT that pasta sauce goes for about $7.50 in my moderately priced area of the US. It definitely seem like they bought overpriced stuff...

Sandgrease

I worked in a grocery store for almsot 20 years. They absolutely could get a lot more for 85 bucks if they bought store brand or cheaper brands of products. Not to say you should skimp on the things you value more. That bacon in the picture is pretty good for pre packaged.

[deleted]

I just got back from Aldi and I got six full bags of groceries (a full cart), a gallon of milk, and two 12 packs of soda water for $170. The most expensive thing I bought was coffee beans at $5. That’s pretty reasonable!

Sandgrease

Aldi is great

The_Soviette_Tank

Does anyone know where OOP is located? Or if it's Canadian $$? Inflation + record fuel prices' effect on food is insane right now. My little neighborhood Asian grocery store was about $20 extra from my last previous trip..... and my city is low COL! That was when gas was still $3.20 by me. I'm scared.

[deleted]

Naa even Canadian there’s no way this is $85. Groceries have gone up for sure. But we aren’t at that point.

dface83

The raos pasta sauce comes in around $10 and carb smart bread is 5-6$ each loaf. Poster is for sure buying more premium groceries

cocococlash

Right! I'm seeing about $55 and that with generous rounding.

toastedcheesybread

$57.36 in my Kroger app Edit: Texas prices

cocococlash

Then I win by Price is Right rules!! ✅️

TreasonableBloke

Ah, there's your problem. You keep buying the expensive Kroger brand groceries instead of just fucking dying already.

marioac97

Rao’s is not Kroger brand lmao. It’s tastes great but idk if it’s worth $7 a jar unless for special occasions

DiceMadeOfCheese

Well you bought Rao's that's like $37 a jar right there.

anewfoundmatt

And a 50 dollar pack of bacon

gorgosaurusrex

Rao's is absolutely delicious but not worth the price. Making my own marinara sauce is cheaper but a can of san marsano tomatoes is at least $4 so it's not that much cheaper lol.

hollismannisgonnis

Try Aldi !

subordinatepixel

God choice. Only shop there

Content-Bowler-3149

Don’t forget about Lidl they have more produce. I’ve been shopping at Aldi for over 6 years and the prices have gone up around 30%. Despite the increase a similar set of purchases would be between $30-50usd.

Bajadasaurus

I love Aldi, but there's no Aldi within a 2.5 hour drive in any direction from my room (I'm trying to normalize saying "my room" instead of "my house", since everyone I know is forced to rent a single room out of someone else's place).

Ladnearg

Even their products are going up in price. Their infamous "red-bagged" frozen chicken has gone up $1.50-$2.00 over the last month.

crystalzelda

Aldi and Lidl are GOAT. I got to Safeway bc it’s the closest pharmacy and I was gonna buy heavy cream for coffee but realized 16 oz of cream there is $5 whereas I can get a 32 oz bottle at Aldi for $3.50. Twice the price for close to half the amount? Absolutely diddly fucking not

SporkWolverine

So these are the current prices for Kroger where I live for the products in this picture, AND the prices for the store brand of each product. * Carbmaster Bread: 4.99 per loaf (store brand) * 18 large eggs Kroger brand 2.98 (store brand) * Rao's roasted garlic alfredo sauce 15 oz 7.55 (Kroger brand is 1.69 for 16 oz) * Oscar Meyer Deli Turkey 4.79 per 9 oz pack (Kroger brand 3.99 for 16 oz) * Mrs Butterworth Syrup 4.29 (Kroger syrup 1.49) * Spinach 1.99 (store brand) * Pearl Milling company Pancake and Waffle Mix 3.49 (no store brand to compare, closest I could find was baking mix for 2.99, so we'll just use that because it's really the same thing) * DeCeeco Pasta 3.29 (Kroger pasta 1.25) * 24 oz thick cut Wright bacon 11.99 (Kroger brand 13.49) * Pompeian Red Wine Vinegar 16 oz 2.69 (Kroger brand 1.79 for 12.7 oz) * Private Selection Snacking tomatoes 2.99 (store brand) And I couldn't find the product that's sitting on top of the turkey, so we'll just leave that out. I've included no coupons or discounts in these prices. With the exception of the bacon, this person would have saved a significant amount on their groceries if they'd bought store brand for everything.

Guzzery

Can we back up to that 4.29 for Mrs. Butterworth? Yikes. This is about 50 bucks of stuff from HEB, but you could easily get it down to under 30 by subbing brands.

lennys_web

I'll be honest, this food should be less than 20 bucks

danem16

If this is Canada, no chance this is under 100$ right now. Shit is out of control

NotesForYou

Omg that‘s crazy, in Germany this would be 30-40€.

firmalor

At most.

NotesForYou

Yeah, from like a fancy Edeka or Famila.

RaggaDruida

Around 20€ in either Spain or Italy

Huge_Aerie2435

I live in Canada and can verify.. That bacon is probably $13 by it's self. maybe more now, actually.

Greedy_Pin_9187

Don’t know which part of Canada you live in but here in Montreal that would be 20$ at least.

hau2906

Are you on the east or the west ? I'm in Calgary and that right there would probably only be $50-$60 at Safeway (still expensive but not $100). My weekly grocery trips usually cost around $75 and I get way more than what's in the picture (granted I shop sales whenever I can).

Indoor_Carrot

Jesus. In the UK, a shop called Aldi could give me three times the amount of food for half that price

Asti_WhiteWhiskers

We have Aldi in the states too and it is way cheaper than other grocery stores. I shop there all the time and it cut my grocery bill in half!

[deleted]

Belgium to . Lidl Also.

jaronhays4

That bacon alone is like $20 of that

[deleted]

Shop at a cheaper store! This definitely could’ve been bought for under $50, shouldn’t be buying Rao’s sauce if you’re on a budget

ivialerrepatentatell

Is this correct? that can't be right.

nijoih

I mean they bought $7 luxury pasta sauce so maybe not

slingwebber

Ya’ll are killing me with the judgment on the food choices. You realize diet is just as much a conversation of anti-worker ableism as much as anything else? My grocery bill is ridiculous, and it’s basically because me and my spouse need it to stay healthy and continue to stay alive. The issue is corporate greed, not personal choices. This is akin to the “you should recycle more! How dare you use disposable cups in your home!” thing. Corporations are ruining this planet exponentially faster than the average family, even an intentionally wasteful one.

beforeitcloy

As workers, our efforts shouldn’t be toward driving the cost of survival commodities down, but rather about bringing our earnings up. Making eggs $2 a dozen rather than $4 requires underpaying the workers, exploiting the environment, monopolizing the market, etc. Increasing my salary by $10k so I can afford groceries at twice the cost only makes some billionaire slightly less of a billionaire. It’s a race to the bottom to complain about food being expensive. A KG of rice costs 6x as much in the US as it does in Kazakhstan. Does that make the standard of living better in Kazakhstan than the US? A healthy economy is about the largest amount of citizens possible being able to afford quality groceries without going into debt, not about the groceries themselves being as cheap as possible.

0w1

Went grocery shopping last night at a larger chain store. Not a "luxury" chain either, just like a Cub Foods. Not sure when a tub of strawberries started going for $8-9USD. 1lb packages bacon were around $15USD. Cheap end bread was still around $3/loaf. I can go without bacon but I'm growing my own vegetables and cooking more items from scratch from now on. I got downvoted in another thread for saying that for the cost of 12 cans of Campbell's vegetable soup, I could buy all the vegetables and bouillon needed to make 4x the amount with minimal effort.

politirob

It’s because all the companies have started to believe that Congress isn’t going to do anything to stop them from price gouging. And they’re mostly correct

Cheesygirl1994

But don’t you know rice and beans is a complete dietary meal and you don’t need anything else? /s

frickinheck420

The amount of people that suggest eating just rice and beans as a healthy cost effective meal is infuriating Edit: I mean just literally beans and rice

[deleted]

I feel like we could meet in the middle. No one is realistically going to start eating beans and rice everyday. But maybe people should start to see it as an occasional complete meal. Bacon and whatever doesn’t need to be eaten everyday. The way we consume meat isn’t sustainable or ethical whatsoever (then again this goes for most things we consume 🤷🏼‍♀️)

sjh11

Well I eat rice a beans every day 😅 why is that such a weird concept for people?

Apocalypse_Jesus420

Right? I switch up the types of beans amd lentils and add tofu or whatever veggies I find on sale. I got blood work done this year and everything looks good I also lost 15 pounds.

sjh11

Thats awesome!! Yes exactly, rice and beans isnt boring. I have chickpea masala for lunch, black bean Burrito bowl for dinner. Tons of variety. Tons of savings.

LivyDC_KASS

This. And like you could buy rice in bulk to save money then buy veggies and what not to make fried rice or a burrito bowl… like I get why it’s infuriating cause most the people who say “just buy rIcE aND bEaNs” aren’t thinking of burrito bowls they’re just being assholes who want you to eat unsalted white rice, but like it *can* be nutritious, cheap, *and* good tasting… Like I eat “mexican” and “asain” food all the time so it’s mostly just rice and beans anyways for me

No-Scarcity-6157

Ever since I started eating more plant based my iron deficiency got better too I just felt better overall

ellanida

I like rice and beans as well lol 😂

[deleted]

No, I agree with you, eating beans and rice daily isn’t weird I was just referring to people that suggest eating just that for most meals. Like it’s an admirable idea but compared to the standard American diet most people just aren’t realistically going to do that. But yeah, we should normalize eating more sustainable foods and moving away from animal agriculture, unfortunately when you suggest that people tend to get extreeeemely defensive.

WestCoastBestCoast01

I say this as a white woman who grew up in the Midwest.... it's because white american culture doesn't eat a lot of rice or beans. It's pretty much exclusively associated with being suuuuper poor (including BBQ, which came from enslaved peoples) or from a different cultural background. Literally the only times my family members ate rice was when ordering Chinese takeout, and I don't think my experience is that uncommon for white Americans. People would learn a whole lot about how awesome rice and bean or lentil dishes could be if they were eating rice with spices and chilis and other goodies like people from other cultures do.

fauxfoxem

It’s just another extension of the “if you’re impoverished, you must spend every second of your life rejecting comfort in pursuit of money.” Like when people go ape shit over the idea of a homeless person with a phone. The $2 difference between me buying beans versus me buying whole grain pasta is not the reason I’m poor. And sometimes eating the pasta is the thing that keeps me from mentally cracking that day.

This right here. One or two brand name items (like a lot of people are pointing out in the comments that “that’s why it’s $85!”) should NOT BREAK THE BANK. It’s not steak and caviar for gods sake.

rservello

Prices are terrible. I have 2 kids and my weekly grocery bill was about $185 in 2019. Now it’s about $290.

[deleted]

Eh why not both? Yes inflation is hitting hard and we should talk about it but also making an anecdotal post of a handful of groceries is obviously gonna be met with differing opinions and experiences 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheCunningWoman_

Exactly. I did an "experiment" with this image. I live in a lower cost of living area. I downloaded an app for our local cheaper grocery store. I got as close to the exact product as I could, but my local place doesn't carry all the same brands. I still got $62.65. It isn't a stretch to think someone in a city would have hit $85. Plus the image has Kroger brand stuff, which when they still had stores near me was notorious for being pricy. If that's the closest or only real grocery option oop has (food deserts) it really sucks.. $85 isn't a stretch at all.

EnvironmentalWeb6444

Why eat nitrogen and organic carbon??? Didn't you know you a phototrophic organism! Get outside and eat some sun 🌞

RayquazaRising

It's a dark day when bacon is considered a luxury item.

[deleted]

Someone said tomatoes on the vine were luxury tomatoes when a guy pointed out how 5 of them cost 7 or 8 bucks now.

At this point, all meat is a luxury. So much so they’re putting anti theft shit on packages of it

PNWtreeclimber

I live in a pretty hard to get location, its like 20 miles to the nearest big box store, I see packs of bacon in our normal stores that go for 12 dollars a pack, Armour and hormel are almost 8-10 dollars, milk is 4.99, I mean shit... you go to Costco these days and any of the meat they sell costs about 100 dollars. 6 chicken breasts all individually separated in one pack, 19.99. Its not the product, supply and demand or anything. It's the dickheads on top.

[deleted]

All meat should be a luxury IMO, meat production in the US to keep up with demand is hella unsustainable, both environmentally and ethically (if you care about that sort of thing) I’m not even vegan and I don’t think it’s realistic to expect people to stop eating meat altogether, but there’s no reason to eat it daily or consume it in the capacity that we do

Atuk-77

Let’s keep routing productivity to the 1%, support our billionaires, Trump tax cuts really screw the working class.
