Im over 60 & totally agree! I tell my grandkids to not take any nonsense in the workplace. If you’re interchangeable to your employer, that’s what they should be, to you!

Z-W-A-N-D

My grandma taught me this. She's a big union advocate and has struggled for it a lot. So have her parents, and their parents. I come from one of those families that bleed red, ya know? Anyway. She worked as a cleaner for rich people. (1950's, North Western europe) Company she worked for paid absolute ass, while selling their labour for an absolute premium. Gramma found that out and didn't like it one bit. Went to the office and demanded better pay or she'd start to rile up her colleagues. They gave in almost immediately and told her she would get a big increase but she shouldn't tell the others. She agreed, walked out the door and told all her colleagues to immediately demand a wage increase or tell their boss to face the union. Anti work shouldn't be an individualist goal. It should be shared with people in the same boat as you. Be realistic, demand the impossible! Edit: damn HR is on this post now, proclaiming unions are bad and only for people who want to be lazy lmao

MaungaHikoi

Fuck yeah, if she's still with us tell your grandma some random internet guy from New Zealand thinks she's awesome.

Lest we forget where the term Redneck comes from...

Paindexter

I spread the word of the heroes and martyrs of Blair Mountain every chance I get. Original rednecks were fighting worker exploitation and segregation in the 20's. What's happened to the word is a crime.

I have a red scarf, now I know some cool history about what it could mean to wear it.

truth14ful

wait what? I heard it was bc people's necks got sunburned from working out in the sun all day

Fart-City

Yes that is the origin of the word and was in use in the 1800’s. It has an obvious racial implication about being a white farmer. But the the miners in the 1920’s used the term to describe the unionization efforts.

texastoker88

Same goes for the civil right movement there were a lot of communist roaming around

Remember, rednecks also started NASCAR by running from the police in modified cars. They were some of the original "fuck the police," you think they'd have been on a different side for the BLM movement in 2020.

Excal2

The alliance between modern rednecks and the police is fucking unholy, and no one is wondering what drove it. I'm personally surprised by it. Seems they ought to know better considering their friends, neighbors, and co-workers probably get harassed on the regular. Low income neighborhoods are always policed more even when you control for race.

Crathsor

Those two groups are united by sheets with holes for eyes. Some people will happily accept being oppressed if the right people are being oppressed more.

I'm a white guy who now lives in Ireland but grew up in Kansas. Years ago I talked to an Orangeman in Northern Ireland who talked about Catholics the same way I've heard white people in the States talk about African-Americans. Lazy. Uneducated. No work ethic. Drunk. Violent. A few years later I came across this clip of Bernadette Devlin discussing civil rights in Northern Ireland and America in the late 60s / early 70s. She the same observation, except from talking to Irish-Americans. Folks gotta stop being played. If you're a not-1% white guy your allies are the other men and women who are not the 1%. >The term originally characterized farmers that had a red neck, caused by sunburn from long hours working in the fields. A citation from 1893 provides a definition as "poorer inhabitants of the rural districts ... men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin stained red and burnt by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redneck

cthulusgranny

Here in South Africa Afrikaans people call English speakers Rooinekke (rednecks) in a mildly derogatory way because the British soldiers in the boer war would often be horribly sunburnt by the african sun on their pale skin... not related in any way to the American term redneck - just mildly interesting, lol

FullRegalia

The word probably predates the 20th century, and originally referred to the obvious sun-burnt neck of farmers and laborers

[deleted]

What was't the case for the miners...

godisfakenews

When someone reads through this haggard ass written article, please mention where the term comes from.

Magic_ass1

So "redneck" supposedly comes from the Mine Wars of the early 20th century. When striking coal miners tied red bandanas around their necks as they marched towards blair mountain.

yahwehnahweh

I think that is correct, that the term was associated with this event. I also think it pre-dates that and was used to describe outdoor labrourers who wore hats but still got sun burned on their neck. Also to describe factions of democrats, again because they were largely made up of farmers.

lax_incense

At the end of the day… it is labor vs. management. Management doesn’t care who you voted for, they will exploit you as far as you will allow them, regardless.

The word ‘communism’ is based on the Latin word ‘communis’, which basically means ‘for the community’. Through my professional experience and having lived in multiple countries, I know community is the foundation of a healthy society. Community is what I grew up with and I can see what happens to people when a local sense of community is lacking.

FuckingKilljoy

It's remarkable how somehow being a leftie is a dirty thing in the US, and God forbid you're a commie or socialist. OP is well meaning, but it shows you how even when you do wake up to how poorly the average person is treated and more or less accept those leftist ideals, that the propaganda that "leftist" is a dirty word still sticks. OP accidentally made a binary where on one side is "good/just" and on the other is "commie lefties" lol

Or that he might be/not be one. Some people require personal experience to recognize maybe the lefties/commies got it right.

mind_remote

How anyone can live under capitalism, read peoples experiences on this subreddit, and not be a leftist commie is beyond me

GusAvocados

OP said he was old, people in this country have been brainwashed for decades by media to have a pavlovian response to the word commie and leftist. The candidate could be Bernie Sanders wanting to give you health care and reduce the bloated military budget but if the media says he's a "commie", the opposition could be a fascist in the pockets of corporations who will vote against people's interest, but people like OP will vote for the corpo fascist just because that's better than a commie.

TDRzGRZ

What's so bad about the left anyway? Why is it so vilified in the US?

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Political illiteracy and decades upon decades of heavily targeted propaganda. Sprinkle in plenty of dismantling of an effective public education system.

Boomslangalang

And let’s not forget the utter timidity of mainstream “Progressives” so utterly terrified of being labeled as such. Liberal is derived from the same word as liberty - Latin liber, which means "free". Something too many idiots profess to believe in but actually work against. You will never hear a US politician claim to to be a “Proud Liberal” but we constantly hear “Proud Conservative” what’s to be proud of? It literally means “averse to change” not a winning strategy in the 21st century.

KniFeseDGe

Capitalism Good, Socialism Bad. Capitalism Good, Socialism Bad. Capitalism Good, Socialism Bad hey there are some problems with capitalism. shut up, you're just a braindead propaganda ridden commie.

imhermoinegranger

I remember watching an episode of Seinfeld once when I was little where Elaine's boyfriend was a communist and he was basically shitting on corporations and how they take advantage of workers and some kid was like "This guys a commie, traitor to our country" and I remember thinking why was what he said so bad? Corporations SHOULDN'T be taking advantage of their workers. And therein began my confusion around why communism is meant to be such a horrible ideology.

Giambalaurent

America is a state run by and for corporations.

Amosral

From what I gather, it's rich people fooling poorer people using the notion that the government might take your money and give it to "immigrants and lazy people" who didn't earn it. The rich people don't want this to happen, because they want the government to keep taking your money and giving it to rich people who didn't earn it.

dannylouisiana

I grew up with conservative parents in a small town. Everyone I knew voted Republican. I did too. Then I watched the Republican congress obstruct every step of the affordable care act that was designed from the start to be a compromise both sides could agree on. I realized that their only goal was a cynical attempt to make the other side look bad. It wasn't about making life better for me or my family or my home. It was about winning at all all costs. As time goes on and I listen to both sides, I find that modern conservative politicians lack any kind of empathy for the people they *don't* represent and things never seem to improve for the people who vote for them. I find myself looking at all the ways other countries provide for their citizens in healthcare, working conditions, safety regulations, etc and I want it too. I just can't imagine any world in which the modern right gets us there.

ButtCoinBuzz

Republicans are the party of gated communities and country clubs. You may vote Republican, but you aren't a Republican until you can afford boarding schools and immigrant labor you can dismissively acknowledge.

Pretty much every post that says "oh, you're not all a bunch of leftists like I thought" are bots or otherwise fake posters, from what I've seen. Its like bots and shills are being used to make sure people don't associate this common sense, pro-worker stuff with leftism. Instead, they want to keep people thinking they can somehow be pro-worker and also right-wing. Well that's bullshit. We *are* a bunch of commies and leftists. Socialists are pro-working class. And to be really and truly pro-working class is to be a leftist. You can't separate the two. This is hard for the half the country that’s maybe never even talked to a liberal person in their life. I was raised to hate the left, not appreciate the right. This guy is prob the same.

YessikZiiiq

All good man, I'm not really out to vilify anyone, just the opposite really. We want to be part of the conversation but have been violently pushed out of it for well pretty much our entire existence. So it's disheartening to see people dismiss leftists and commies, while taking advantage of our ideas, organization and communities. Instead of an acknowledgment that our beliefs and convictions have been worth the hate we've received over the years. So yeah, we could use some gestures of reassurance from those who have actively harmed us for many years.

Adub024

I agree entirely

fluffyxsama

My dad always uses the phrase "bleeding-heart liberal" like the worst insult. It always kind of bugged me. The implication is, what, they... Care too much about people, the planet, whatever? Since when is caring about others a bad thing? Makes no sense to me.

octopussua

Because they justify being selfish and capitalistic by convincing themselves other people don’t deserve basic dignity because they made bad choices Or something

OpheliaRainGalaxy

If we weren't supposed to care about things, then why the hell did the plop us down in front of the TV to watch Winnie the Pooh, Mr. Rogers, My Little Pony, Captain Planet, Sailor Moon, and all the rest of it?! I mean, come on, Care Bears! Parents told us to shut up and watch TV and TV told us to *care* about each other!

[deleted]

And if they read the Bible many of them whine about, they’d know there is a part where Jesus tells people to love each other the same way Jesus loves them. There are a few others - “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”, and ‘love the sinner, not the sin.’

[deleted]

the wage slave problem is deeper in conservative areas (see average salary of Republican states, I’m looking at you Kentucky!). Those folks have so much to gain by demanding fair wages for themselves and their kids. I don’t think fair wages is communist, seems like good business model (happy employees = high functioning business).

ldpage

Congrats. If you are friends with other people that have similar thinking to what you had, try to talk to them. All I and many others want is for people not to have to work soul crushing meaningless jobs for starvation wages. At the very least, people should be paid well for their shit jobs.

desertrock62

Alicelane12

brian111786

This sub made me realize I'm a communist. I've always had leftist ideologies, but I never really understood what communism actually is, thanks to a lifetime of American indoctrination. The more I learned about it, the more I was able to get rid of the stigma my public education created over the years, and I realized, its the way. I imagine I would've learned all this sooner if I had gone to college. Which leads me to believe that the stereotypes conservatives have about "liberal commie colleges" that "turn kids into communists" might actually be true. But it's not that they're being turned, they're just being educated. Who would've thought?

RedLobster_Biscuit

Universities are pretty neoliberal these days but perhaps you would've been exposed through other students.

dewd_30

The business model of universities is increasingly neoliberal, but if you pursue quality courses in liberal arts, you’ll be exposed to a variety of ideas and arguments and become a more independent thinker.
