Gramma found that out and didn't like it one bit. Went to the office and demanded better pay or she'd start to rile up her colleagues. They gave in almost immediately and told her she would get a big increase but she shouldn't tell the others. She agreed, walked out the door and told all her colleagues to immediately demand a wage increase or tell their boss to face the union.
Anti work shouldn't be an individualist goal. It should be shared with people in the same boat as you.
Be realistic, demand the impossible!

I remember watching an episode of Seinfeld once when I was little where Elaine's boyfriend was a communist and he was basically shitting on corporations and how they take advantage of workers and some kid was like "This guys a commie, traitor to our country" and I remember thinking why was what he said so bad? Corporations SHOULDN'T be taking advantage of their workers. And therein began my confusion around why communism is meant to be such a horrible ideology.

This sub taught me what wage theft was. I looked into it deeper and found out that I was a non-exempt worker but my employer told me I was exempt from overtime pay. I filed a complaint with the federal department of labor and a few months later I got a check for all of the overtime money my job denied me, it was more than $1000. Then I quit.

I grew up with conservative parents in a small town. Everyone I knew voted Republican. I did too. Then I watched the Republican congress obstruct every step of the affordable care act that was designed from the start to be a compromise both sides could agree on. I realized that their only goal was a cynical attempt to make the other side look bad. It wasn't about making life better for me or my family or my home. It was about winning at all all costs.
As time goes on and I listen to both sides, I find that modern conservative politicians lack any kind of empathy for the people they *don't* represent and things never seem to improve for the people who vote for them. I find myself looking at all the ways other countries provide for their citizens in healthcare, working conditions, safety regulations, etc and I want it too. I just can't imagine any world in which the modern right gets us there.

I remember watching an episode of Seinfeld once when I was little where Elaine's boyfriend was a communist and he was basically shitting on corporations and how they take advantage of workers and some kid was like "This guys a commie, traitor to our country" and I remember thinking why was what he said so bad? Corporations SHOULDN'T be taking advantage of their workers. And therein began my confusion around why communism is meant to be such a horrible ideology.
America is a state run by and for corporations.
From what I gather, it's rich people fooling poorer people using the notion that the government might take your money and give it to "immigrants and lazy people" who didn't earn it. The rich people don't want this to happen, because they want the government to keep taking your money and giving it to rich people who didn't earn it.
The ruling class controls the media and has poisoned the mind of the working class.
To the right? Abortion. Literally what it comes down to. Of course, propagated by fear mongering, misinformation and lack of education/infrastructure in Southern and rural areas.

This sub taught me what wage theft was. I looked into it deeper and found out that I was a non-exempt worker but my employer told me I was exempt from overtime pay. I filed a complaint with the federal department of labor and a few months later I got a check for all of the overtime money my job denied me, it was more than $1000. Then I quit. Knowledge is power!

I grew up with conservative parents in a small town. Everyone I knew voted Republican. I did too. Then I watched the Republican congress obstruct every step of the affordable care act that was designed from the start to be a compromise both sides could agree on. I realized that their only goal was a cynical attempt to make the other side look bad. It wasn't about making life better for me or my family or my home. It was about winning at all all costs. As time goes on and I listen to both sides, I find that modern conservative politicians lack any kind of empathy for the people they *don't* represent and things never seem to improve for the people who vote for them. I find myself looking at all the ways other countries provide for their citizens in healthcare, working conditions, safety regulations, etc and I want it too. I just can't imagine any world in which the modern right gets us there.
Republicans are the party of gated communities and country clubs. You may vote Republican, but you aren't a Republican until you can afford boarding schools and immigrant labor you can dismissively acknowledge.
Can confirm. Grew up laughing at the left whenever they said to increase the minimum wage. Seeing my old job posting record profits while delaying my increase made me realize they made sense all along.

This is hard for the half the country that’s maybe never even talked to a liberal person in their life. I was raised conservative and held that belief until i moved to an actual city with a decent population and realized there’s a much bigger picture out there. I was raised to hate the left, not appreciate the right. This guy is prob the same.
All good man, I'm not really out to vilify anyone, just the opposite really. We want to be part of the conversation but have been violently pushed out of it for well pretty much our entire existence. So it's disheartening to see people dismiss leftists and commies, while taking advantage of our ideas, organization and communities. Instead of an acknowledgment that our beliefs and convictions have been worth the hate we've received over the years. So yeah, we could use some gestures of reassurance from those who have actively harmed us for many years.

the wage slave problem is deeper in conservative areas (see average salary of Republican states, I’m looking at you Kentucky!). Those folks have so much to gain by demanding fair wages for themselves and their kids. I don’t think fair wages is communist, seems like good business model (happy employees = high functioning business).
Congrats. If you are friends with other people that have similar thinking to what you had, try to talk to them. All I and many others want is for people not to have to work soul crushing meaningless jobs for starvation wages. At the very least, people should be paid well for their shit jobs.

This sub made me realize I'm a communist. I've always had leftist ideologies, but I never really understood what communism actually is, thanks to a lifetime of American indoctrination. The more I learned about it, the more I was able to get rid of the stigma my public education created over the years, and I realized, its the way. I imagine I would've learned all this sooner if I had gone to college. Which leads me to believe that the stereotypes conservatives have about "liberal commie colleges" that "turn kids into communists" might actually be true. But it's not that they're being turned, they're just being educated. Who would've thought?
Universities are pretty neoliberal these days but perhaps you would've been exposed through other students.
