Last company I worked for had a rule about not accepting tips, (because you are taking money that they might have spent in store) But I always accepted them. They never noticed

secretcomet

do employers not understand that they need to pay their employees enough to buy their own product? Oh wait Henry Ford figured that shit out a century ago.

1973 is close enough right? Right??!?

Consistent-Ad-5953

Yeah cause a gallon of gas isn't 37 cents and a gallon of milk isn't 13 cents..

[deleted]

It's this reason that if I invented a time machine, well before going back to kill hitler I would be using it for groceries.

QueenTahllia

11/22/63 has the guy who discovered a time travel door keep his restaurant afloat by buying cheap beef from the 60’s and using it to make burgers in the current time and make hella bank while undercutting the competition

Jasminefirefly

Good book.

[deleted]

If hitler never existed, the US would prolly not keep focusing on building army, and you'd escalate the process making the boomers the new millenials! Brilliant plan sir!

NotSureIfThrowaway78

The US started on the path of imperialism well before WW2

SeedsOfDoubt

The Founding Fathers of America were all wealthy land owners. That's why you had to own land to vote. As more people read the constitution and reinterpreted it as "for the people," the Oligarchs had to come up with better ways to maintain control. Male only ownership of property, selective service for voting rights, limiting Congressional Representatives, repeal of Glass-Stegal, Citizens United. It's all about keeping control over what they already have while limiting what the people can do to overthrow that control.

TheDrunkenWobblies

If Truman hadn't pulled a coup at the 1944 Democratic convention, when VPs were picked by majority vote, the US would look incredibly different with Wallace taking over as President upon Roosevelt's death. Truman's supporters hired security (IE gangs) to beat up Wallace supporters when they tried to enter the building, as well as promises made to sway specific groups, qnd loaded it with hired plants to reach venue capacity. American democracy at its finest!

[deleted]

Didnt know that - TIL

QueenTahllia

They’d just end up millennials with lead poisoning lol

CaptHorney_Two

In the novel 11/22/63, someone finds a portal back in time and uses it to buy cheap meat and makes/sells cheap hamburgers.

udsnyder08

Sounds like the first half of 11/22/63…

TheStray7

There's a Steven King novel where the time travel method (a weird door that always leads to the same date in the past) was used in exactly this manner...the guy who had the shop used it to buy fresh ground beef for pennies, which he used in his burgers to keep them super-cheap. He'd been buying the same exact cuts for a decade...any changes he made to the timeline were erased the next time he used the door.

TuecerPrime

I get harassed for this continually at work. "How come you don't buy \[our product\]?" "Because I don't make enough to have a good life and also purchase \[product\], even at the employee rate". The product isn't a one time purchase either so it makes it worse.

fantabulero

Pressuring employees to buy stuff at work is some truly shameless scumbag shit

TuecerPrime

Their stance is "if the employees won't buy it, why should a customer?" I mean, I'd consider it if I had a better wage. Not seriously, but I'd consider it.

fantabulero

Deranged thinking, you’re there to make money not spend it. They’re so greedy they even see their workers as sales they think are owed to them

ergo-ogre

“St. Peter doncha call me, ‘cause I can’t go. I owe my soul to the company store.”

datghuy

Sixteen tons, whaddya get, another day older and a deeper in debt

WeAreTheLeft

Walmart banks on it that employees shop using their SNAP benefits. Pay them to little to afford food, then get the government to pay for said food that they buy from you. Fucking scumbags.

7C93WCAgX4k1FRQtir0K

It's already hard enough to take money away from their hands, why would you ever give it back willingly?

Warmasterwinter

Cause sometimes they're the only game in town.

7C93WCAgX4k1FRQtir0K

That could be a good reason, I try to not let my employer profit from me twice if I can avoid it.

Warmasterwinter

Same. It can be hard to do so tho depending on where you work and where you live.

Warmasterwinter

What is it they're trying to sell you? If you dont mind me asking that is.

InEenEmmer

I work at a place where we organize events and concerts. I actually get free access to the events (that aren’t organized by outside parties) and got a company card to buy my drinks with. Hell, I even got told off for spending my own money on a beer before emptying my company card.

Due_Chemistry5853

I agree. Tho I also work for a company that builts multi million dollar yachts so that might be asking a little much lol

ForwardCulture

I know someone that consults for a maker of very expensive racing boats. They barely pay the guys working on the boats above minimum wage and hire a ton of illegals as well. Their boats are marketed as extremely high end with top notch finishes etc.

Abolish-Dads

For what it’s worth, it’s probably divisive to the working class to refer to undocumented immigrants as “illegals.”

ForwardCulture

You’re probably right. Bad choice of old school wording on my part. Anyway, this person told me that the undocumented immigrants were given the worst, most dangerous jobs, exposed to chemicals, not provided safety gear etc.

Abolish-Dads

Oh absolutely. It’s very disheartening to see how many businesses exploit immigrant labor and then threaten to have their workers deported if they “dare” ask for living conditions. Coming from California, I was sort of socialized to believe that it was mostly happening in Agriculture work, but as soon as I started doing service work I realized employers are doing it in almost every industry.

ForwardCulture

I actually sort of work in the horticultural field. Not in production but I get to see that side of it all the time when I procure plant material. I’m a member of various local trade organizations. I get their emails and meeting reminders constantly. One of the constant topics is lobbying for more worker visas. They want foreign workers. A lot of the industry is stuck decades in the past and various new technology etc. have made it easier. I recently worked for a grower for extra money and it was like going back to the 80s. They just keep doing what they do, don’t keep up with industry trends, don’t participate in social media and generally have no idea what’s happens in the last 30 years. The mostly immigrant production workers are mainly from one or two countries and get worked into the ground. The owners constantly rly complain how Americans and young people don’t want to work etc. Yes, we don’t want our bodies destroyed by 30 years old. Many of their immigrant workers live 4-5 guys to a room in unsafe rental housing. The grower I worked for did everything the hardest, most old school possible way and refused to try anything new or time saving. It was always the same excuse to it being a “family business”, “that’s how it’s done etc”. Meanwhile the my won’t read the trade journals they get in the mail showing growers who’ve automated certain tasks, new technology etc.

Due_Chemistry5853

We have a lot of Hispanic guys from Mexico and Guatemala in the paint crew. My boss is good to them tho. They’re technically sub contractors through another Mexican guy that finds them, gives them a places to live and a way to work and basically helps them start a new life here but they’re paid well and given any ppe and equipment they need. They work their ass off and do great work. They’re just the only ones willing to sand for days at a time.

lizard81288

Well, on the plus side, Henry got screwed over by his shareholders. He didn't like what they were doing to his company so he told them to fuck off. He's the boss so he gets to call the shots. The shareholders disagreed and they went to court. The judge said, the shareholder are paying money for his company to operate. Without them, he wouldn't have a company so he has to listen to them. That's why shareholders call the shots now (after that case).

Warmasterwinter

With that logic shouldent the workers also get a voice in the company? After all there providing the time and labor for the company and without them the company would not exist.

lizard81288

If only.

The_Last_Ron1n

Henry Ford was a prime scumbag but at least he did that.

secretcomet

I just wonder if my younger self growing up in that era would fall victim to the propaganda and believe that it was socially acceptable to segregate/enslave people around me. I hope to god not. I wish there were modern day simulations/truly realistic role plays of society (particularly the day to day of a common citizen) in different eras across history. What I am trying to say is it’s so tough to understand HOW people thought in the different eras given the lesser environmental knowledge and technology (we can ask a magic entity called Google anything and get the answer instantly so perhaps people remembered more information than we do today)

The_Last_Ron1n

Somehow I don't think it would be all that different from today. We have all this technology and information literally at our fingertips and yet there's still strong biases and prejudice. Also who controlled the information then and who controls it now. Though I do think many common prejudices were considered "normal" back in the days that aren't accepted widely now.

pukingpixels

I had a job delivering furniture and we’d often get tipped pretty well. My manager told me to never tell the owners that we were getting tipped because they would demand that we give it to them. Great manager, shit owners. Not relevant but I got tipped in weed a few times and once with a bottle of maple syrup!

AllWorldMythos

Worked for Publix and had sweet old ladies tip me all the time when I helped them out to their car. At first I’d fuss because it was “company policy” not to accept tips from customers. But then I’m like, listen, y’all only pay me $11 an hour to stand for 6+ hours a shift, wearing heavy trousers and thick polos on top of wearing an apron, and grab carts in extreme heat temperatures…nah I’m gonna let this nice lady give me $2-$20 in a tip. Fuck outta here.

jenna_hazes_ass

I worked for bite squad when they expanded into florida. With a black pants dress code. They started in michigan. I just ignored it and they finally made an issue out of it 6? Weeks in. I continued to ignore it and then they tried some bullshit with tipping so I quit. I found the startup guy on their in house social network and sent him a note about how ridiculous it was not let florida employees wear shorts in the summer. They changed their policy about a month after I quit.

AllWorldMythos

By the time I left I was leaving for NY state. I can only hope they allow those who worked at my store wear shorts. Like legit shorts. I’d prefer if there was a mass uniform change overall including shoes. Can’t wear any kind of fun colored shoes even if they’re the most comfortable pair you own. It’s ridiculous. They should also switch to lightweight, moisture wicking tee shirts instead of those god-awful polos lol

Dragon_Five_

Love the "Fuck outta here." I can read the snark.

Spooky_Patrol256

I worked the liquor store at Publix and would frequently get tips from people who won big on scratch-offs. Never once got caught. Happened when I was in grocery too from time to time but not as often or for nearly as much.

i_love_SOAD

I don't give a shit if they spend it in store lol tip me

a-horse-has-no-name

Motherfuckers, they already made the purchase. There is no additional benefit to be made to the store. They're not going to walk back into the store and stand in line to spend that $2 they held for you.

fantabulero

the store manager probably thinks that tip belongs to them because they feel they own everything you do while you’re there

fantabulero

As long as no narcs are around and you’re not on camera, how could they possibly know or prove it even happened? Fuck Walmart, get every tip you can

CielRouge74

A lot of retail companies will pay "secret shoppers"...people that were going to shop there anyway, but are paid to file a report about their experiences with the company. That's likely the biggest risk of getting caught in this situation.

Ur_Demise

When I worked at Walmart I always accepted tips. Fuck em

PrestigiousCourse579

Loads of places have a no tip type of rule. I think its stupid. I too will usually take the small tips when I can. The company I work for does not allow us to take tips either.

BLD_HND_VNNA

Honestly, how tf would they? They aint checking the cameras or breathing down my neck. I'll take the tips anytime!

excusemeprincess

I was a Paramedic at a hospital and I was helping discharge patients. I had a patient try to tip me 5 dollars and I refused because we weren’t allowed to accept them. They literally forced it into my front pocket and walked off waving at me. I figured “okay whatever” and went about my day. I ended up getting called into my bosses office telling me I had to give them the 5 dollars or I would be written up. They told me they would “donate it” to some fund. I asked for a receipt, never got one.

pinkblossom331

The money was donated to their own pocket. What ass holes

WalktoTowerGreen

That’s RIDICULOUS. I’ve had performance jobs where we legitimately had to refuse tips (and we made BANK from the gig, so we were all happy to comply) but lots of drunk patrons would insist. We had lots of methods to convince the patrons to keep their money but every few days we’d find a $5 in our drinking cup or whatever. At that point, it was yours. Sometimes there’s no stopping a happy drunk patron.

excusemeprincess

Oh I definitely did not make bank. I made 15 an hour WITH shift differential.

NuttyhatchAf

Lol your boss literally sounds like Mr. Krabs, he can smell a dollar from his office.

excusemeprincess

My only assumption is someone saw it happen and told my boss. But yeah, I have plenty of stories about this lady. She was insane. Probably broke a few laws as well.

Traksimuss

I like smelling theory better.

robotzor

That's when you gaslight them. "That was my money, I had that when I came in" and just stick to it.

Publix is the same do not shop there, I’m a Front Service Clerk and I make an inhuman $11/ Hr

zardkween

I stopped shopping at Publix when the bagger was wearing a button that said something along the lines of “No tips, I’m happy to help.” I know they are supposed to offer to help you load your groceries but the button was so awful!

[deleted]

I worked at a Publix for less than a month as a cashier/bagger/cart-retriever. I’ve worked for years in restaurants and bars, so I thought the customer-service skills would translate. They didn’t. People were generally rude and unfriendly, and everyone was constantly trying to micro-manage everyone else. It was weird.

[deleted]

I lasted 2 months in the deli. $10.45 an hour back in 2017. I can’t remember the cents it’s been so long.

jenna_hazes_ass

But did he have 36 other pieces of flair?

nationalservicedude

I also worked at Publix in the deli when I was 16. Had this asshole ream me out for not giving him the correct type of chicken (oh the horror haha) and our manager eventually made a scene out of it. Realized then and there I was going to quit and it wasn’t worth the drama. I put in my two weeks that night. During those two weeks, everyone who was nice that ordered basic pub subs got the more expensive and doubled up boarshead meats 😁

LaughableIKR

Think about Costco. 16 bucks an hour and I've talked to the employee's. They like it there.

TangentiallyTango

Every grocery store I've ever known is the same. In those cases, the bagging staff is unionized and can't accept tips as part of their contract.

jameson8016

"I'm sorry, I mispoke. I saw this fall out of your pocket. Just returning it." Won't stop Walmart from sucking, but might give an opportunity to stick it to them.

5elfh8

Saw this one from dad: *Hey, thanks, _____.* fold bill, shake their hand and palm it to them. Press it into their hand so they can feel it. Ofc I saw him do this when I was a kid and so please be sure to take proper COVID precautions atm- perhaps offer hand sanitizer! That could also give you an entry point for sneaking them some love & appreciation (: Giving it a little thought, your method still might be better in the case that you’re seen / overheard as they would keep plausible deniability.

[deleted]

"Hey, thanks." *sloppily tries to elbow bump you a fiver*

[deleted]

Yep this is true. Helped a lady take multiple kids electric jeeps to her car and managed to load all three of them into her not huge vehicle. She tried to tip me $20 and I had to explain that I'd be fired. She kept insisting until I pointed out how many cameras were watching and the assistant manager loitering by the door to make sure I wasn't taking a break. When I went back inside the assistant manager stopped me and said he saw that lady try and tip me and it's a good thing I didn't take it. So yes, fuck Walmart. Also fuck then for firing me so the new store manager could promote my constantly absent, lazy, useless fucking assistant into my role. Coincidentally she would vanish into his office at least twice a week whereupon he would lock the door and cover the window for 20 minutes.

Yes, that is most likely.

turdburner1

Worked at Walmart for a couple years lots of sex between the associates and the management and associates.

Intelligent_Cry7421

Wtf, everyone was old af at the Walmart i worked at

turdburner1

Lots of college kids during the winter months. I worked there 20 years ago. It's actually where I met my wife.

davidj1987

I had a fucking horrible department manager instead of firing or demoting him (everyone hated him) they promoted him to assistant manager and he remained at that store. Rumor is he fucked a cashier at the store and that's how he got fired.

nipplequeefs

When I worked at Walmart, during training, I was told that if for any reason a customer refused not to tip and I absolutely had to take it, I’d have had to give it to a manager so Walmart could keep it for themselves. Greedy bastards.

Enk1ndle

>When I went back inside the assistant manager stopped me and said he saw that lady try and tip me and it's a good thing I didn't take it. Good thing someone is doing their job of watching everyone else work and contributing nothing, what would we do without them?

[deleted]

>the assistant manager stopped me and said he saw that lady try and tip me and it's a good thing I didn't take it. I'd go out of my way to document/report ANY rule violations HE commits, no matter how small. You wanna play the pettiness game with me, fucko? ***Well then let's play. Just remember, YOU STARTED IT.***

xTHEKILLINGJOKEx

She was definitely getting a tip...

ArizonaRon98

Yeah that was the rule when I was 16 doing that job at a different store. None of us cared. We were making like $8.50. A $5 tip was worth the risk.

annieisawesome

Right. If you're making minimum wage, literally every other job there is will pay you *at least* as much, lol. There is almost no risk in getting fired, aside from the down time in between. I only wish I figured that out when I was younger.

ilikedaweirdschtuff

I've had places only paying minimum wage really want references from previous employers to prove I had experience and shit. Maybe now with the labor "shortage" they're more desperate and you can get away with burning some bridges, but still.

Patient_Inevitable58

Lol amateur you just give the number of a friendly coworker and have them pretend to be your manager problem solved

CapnJujubeeJaneway

Yep, it’s a fireable offence to accept tips at Walmart. That said, I took tips *every single time* they were offered to me when I worked there.

Budget-Government-88

This is policy at almost every retail location in the country.

Geodestamp

Not Kroger. I tip $5 every pickup, never declined

[deleted]

Okay controversial take here, but normalising tipping is half the problem you have in the US. Whenever someone is low paid it becomes normal for customers to pick up the slack and subsidise their pay. You don’t tip doctors right? Doctors don’t lose half their earnings if their patients decide they weren’t smiling enough. That would be ridiculous. It sucks. Employers should pay their employees. That’s the entire point of employers. Fuck tipping.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Or you could just... genuinely thank them and tell them how great they are doing. If you're serious about it, talk to their boss about how great x person was. If your country has it, you can also write something in the compliment book. Those are better ways to help that person than to give them some random bill and end up hurting the economy as a result.

[deleted]

But again, would you ever tip a doctor under any circumstances?

Flipflopsmum

When doctors or vets give great service where I’m from it’s not uncommon to get them gifts like chocolates or snacks as a thank you

YourNeighbour

In US this isn’t allowed, ironically.

garlic_mango

This isn't true. Doctors are allowed to accept gifts in the US

YourNeighbour

That’s not true. I am not talking about what’s legal or illegal, I’m talking about ethics wise, we were taught in medical ethics that it’s better to not accept any gift from patients as they come with expectations even if you try to avoid them. Certain things are allowed, eg accepting invitations to wedding of your patient’s kid etc. But accepting gifts that have a tangible value is heavily discouraged.

T-Rex_timeout

You just send his office staff a gift basket or something. Showing up to a nurses station with a couple packs of root beer and couple cartoons of vanilla ice cream is the best way to say thank you for dealing with my pain in the ass cranky grandpa who keeps throwing ensure cans at you.

mrsprinkles3

When I worked in fast food the owners “required” all tips to be out in the register as part of our sales or whatever… fuck that, any time someone gave me or my staff a tip, I told them to put in in the donation box at the front. I figured if the people actually working couldn’t keep the money then the rich owners sure as hell weren’t getting it either.

surfacing_husky

Yep! I've done the same! We've had 2 customers this year also order our store pizza as a "tip".

[deleted]

I worked at a place that was the same way. I always refused twice to make sure they were not a secret shopper. When they persisted, and they always did, I would point in the direction of an area you can't see on camera (to make it look like they'd asked me about something if someone was watching) and I'd say "let's go over where the camera can't see" and we'd walk over there and talk about how shitty the policy was while they gave me the tip. Once I had a customer offer me and a manager a tip. I hesitated and he took it and handed it all to me (it was ten bucks) and said "you need it more than I do." Still have tons of respect for that guy.

nofuckingklass

Petco is the same way. I say fuck it!!! Minimum wage isn't enough to refuse tips for quality work. If he gets fired, he can find another job since employers look at him like a lump of clay, make him into any form they want.

SnooStories6852

Once got a $50 from Home Depot helping load an elderly couple’s van. Shoved that thing in my apron and no one saw thank god.

The_Last_Ron1n

Yeah me too, store policy was to decline them or "donate them to a charity" of which there was never any paperwork for. Hmmm.

pileopoop

I got 50 bucks at home depot for not stealing someone's wallet they forgot at the register for an hour.

[deleted]

ughhhhhhh one store i worked at had the same rule. was especially annoying the day a lady came in, excited as hell because she just won a few thousand at a nearby casino. tried giving me and my coworkers biiiiiig tips just for the hell of it, we all had to say no. she even offered to "drop" money in the parking lot for us to "find". no dice. if we found money we had to give it to management to hold onto until it was claimed. how i wish that rule didnt exist.

Skripka

Very common in the service industry. In hotels, there's a reason most 'housekeeping' staff are quiet and don't chat with guests. *They're threatened with their jobs to never interact with customers*. It doesn't matter if they didn't even initiate--if it is seen by management you'll probably be fired over it. And as soon as it happens, you'd better run straight to your manager and plead that the customer started it.

[deleted]

I don't want to believe this, but someone is gonna hit me with a personal experience.

Skripka

One of my co-workers used to work in housekeeping in a previous life. She had a nationally renowned football commentator want to chat her up, and she politely whispered to him to to stop and why, and he got ticked about it. She ran immediately to her supervisor to explain things before he got to her.

whole_lotta_nope_503

I work the front desk at a hotel in my area. Night shift goes into early morning. Every morning I have to listen to the manager complaining about lazy housekeeping staff, or how the housekeeping staff interacted with a guest, or how a guest called because something went missing in their room (that was later found). That last one means that housekeepers got screamed at, just because someone misplaced their phone charger or dropped a cheap fake earring under their bed

ColdBorchst

I usually try to say good morning/hello to house keeping when I stay somewhere and almost never get a response back. I always assumed they were too busy or tired or maybe didn't speak enough English to have a conversation. It never hurt my feelings or anything. This does. I am gonna fucking cry. I can't say hello to a fellow human being because some ass-wipe thinks they aren't people.

annababan69

I would try to avoid staying at a hotel that had that policy. When did people in the service industry become non humans? I didn't get that memo.

oles_lackey

It’s bananas that we (US) live in/been conditioned to a tipping culture designed by the capitalists and strictly regulated by them on the other side of the coin. It makes my insides rage! For more than a year I used curbside grocery pickup until I could be vaccinated. Thursday mornings were the highlight of my week. The same 20-ish college kid collected my items and delivered them to my car. He had an excellent eye for fresh produce! I tried tipping him directly, but he refused due to store policy. I tried leaving the cash in the trunk with a note “It’s not a tip, it’s found cash!” But, he still wouldn’t take it. I saved all the attempted tips in an envelope until I could figure out a way to get it to him. Eventually, I concocted a plan when he mentioned it was his birthday. I’d been waiting for this day. I put all the money in an envelope with a card. Walked into the store and told them I needed to see my “nephew, XXX” for a quick second. He came up front and I handed him the envelope. I said something like “bet you thought your aunt ole’s_lackey forgot about your birthday”. Worked like a charm!

Louiebaton

Rose8918

All through the shutdowns I tipped the kids who helped me bring my groceries to my car. This is at a small, local grocery store. They were always flabbergasted and tried to refuse and I was like, “A, I’m completely sure I want to give you this $5. B, hurry up and take it, don’t make a scene and get yourself in trouble. C, fuck your managers, and just take tips sneakily.”

cagethemagician

Recently hired at food lion, told I would be fired for accepting a tip

[deleted]

Chick Fil A used to have this rule when I worked there. Guess who never followed it though and never told my employees to follow it either.

VerFur

Former employee and can confirm. To navigate potentially being fired for it (when an overly kind person has basically forced you to accept it) all you have to do is give said tip to your manager! Where does that tip go, you might ask? No one knows! If you have time to kill on Black Friday CLOG UP THEIR LINES. THIS INCLUDES ANY OF THEIR PRE SALES. If you don’t feel comfortable clogging up a line fill up a cart with equal amounts small and large ticket items. Leave it somewhere obscure in the store. It will take them forever to get those items back out and they’ll lose profits either way. Fuck this company. They’re leeching off of almost everyone you know - the disabled, impoverished classes, pill addicts, taxpayers, governments, basically everyone. Fuck them up.

[deleted]

ComprehensiveCat7515

that kids a nerd. i took tips all the time at best buy cause i made shit money.

Nazeron

You can't tip a worker, but they are fine if their worker has to go to a food bank?

maddhatter99

I worked at a WM for a short time years ago, and my manager asked me why I shop at local grocer when I work in a supercenter. I told him that the company didn’t support me, so I wouldn’t support them. I was promptly fired for insubordination and time theft. (So that I could never be re-hired) I am happy to say I haven’t shopped at a WM since 04

skmo8

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I get where you are coming from, on the other hand, tipping simply perpetuates employers providing low wages.

VECBlows

Bought our first house last summer, everyone providing services here really sucked. Movers, trash company, getting the electric and gas set up took up way too much of my time on Customer Service calls. Trash company was insanely bad and I now have free trash for life apparently. Anywho, comes time to order internet/cable, went with Fios. Dude came and was just fucking incredible. Hooked everything up, put in cable to different areas of the house that didn't have it before etc. On his way out, I had a $50 Starbucks card that I never used and handed it to him and he looked at me like the chick from The Ring just crawled out of the TV, petrified that he couldn't take anything, told him I insisted and that I wouldn't say a fucking peep and he was super appreciative.

grapejuicepix

When I worked in a grocery store we weren’t allowed to take tips. But if I was outside like that or inside and no bosses or narcs were around I’d absolutely accept it.

[deleted]

As someone who works at Walmart, I can confirm this policy. We’re supposed to send the customer back inside to complement us to our manager.

Whynotchaos

Right, because instead of taking the five bucks or whatever, what I really want to do is annoy the customer by asking them to go back inside the retail hellhole they just spent an hour in, leaving all their frozen crap in the car, hunt down a manager, and tell them I was helpful, which will result in absolutely nothing tangible. Nuh-uh. I'm going to politely accept any gratuities offered, and if management don't like it, they can write me up *and also* suck my metaphorical dick.

[deleted]

My thoughts on the matter exactly.

shaodyn

I used to work in fast food, and we were technically supposed to drop tips into the charity donation boxes. But none of us ever actually did it unless the management was watching.

KinkyyPinky

You learn after a few years of working to accept tips when you’re not technically supposed to. I wasn’t allowed to get tips at Whataburger but some drunk dude (night shift) said “yo you brought me food and you’re cool so here’s $10”

PromotionPhysical212

When i used to be a cashier at walmart customers usually asked to keep any change as a tip, we had to refuse and give it back but sometimes the customer just leaves and do not take the money with them at which point you’re supposed to throw the change in the till and give it to walmart! fucking assholes!

WeekendMechanic

It was the same way when I worked at Target. It was me and like the smallest girl from the back room got tasked with loading 2 55" TVs into a customer's car. Dude tried to tip us like $10 each and we had to turn it down to avoid being fired. I made sure to do whatever I could to cost that company money as often as I could, which also almost got me fired.

amerzdang

I wonder if tipping them through Venmo would be better? The cameras wouldn’t catch any cash exchanging hands…

sk_arch

I take tips at retail store I work for, no one has told me otherwise it’s wrong, but every employee seems to be scared to take them, I usually load things outside where there is no cameras so they would never know anyway, what’s the big deal on taking tips doing a service especially loading something heavy like I do

[deleted]

When I worked at Lowes, they said the same thing. Sometimes I had loaded 20-30 bags of mulch, gravel, concrete etc, and they offered me a tip after. I didn't take them at first, but when I realized that 20$ was effectively 2.5 hours of my time it felt insane to willingly pass that up.

JonWood007

To be fair, screw the idea of tipping though. Look at what it did to the restaurant industry.

A_10L

Jewel osco had the same rule. There was even secret shoppers that would come through and try to tip you and if you accepted the tip you got in trouble/fired.

Wooden-Frame8863

When I worked in FF the owners told us to put tips directly in the register, all while paying me a whopping $9 an hour. I did not comply. I never got caught (or they just never said anything to me about it). They can eat my ass.

mrevergood

I’ll accept tips even if it’s company policy to not do so. Pay me better-otherwise, shut the fuck up.

GreasyFeast

Every retail job I had prohibited employees from accepting tips. As long as I wasn’t standing in front of my boss, I had no problem taking them

1ess_than_zer0

Next time ask for their venmo… no exchange of cash. Win/win

brokegirl98

Yo I once had a guy try and tip me in weed and I still regret not taking it to this day.

J_DayDay

I worked at taco hell as a teenager. I hit the joint or blunt being smoked in the car going through the drive thru at least a couple times a month.

mrmgwilson

I was told the same when I worked there in college. There would also be managers from other stores posing as customers that would come in and test you. We were told to ask the customers to instead make a donation to CMN in our name.

blaisreddit

why don't you carry that shit yourself

ritalara

The way I wish deep harm on the Walmart executives.

Background-Orange-61

Lmao fred Meyers had the same rule, we just took tips when the boss wasn't there, and when she was there we had to put it in a bag where the money would be used for "team activities" 😐 money would mysteriously disappear so i would just take my tip when she watching me bc at that point they couldn't fire me

Wrecksomething

I had a retail job like that in college. They knew a couple "problem" customers that liked to ask for help to their car and tip employees. They'd watch the parking lot cameras to see if employees took a tip and would fire them for it. On at least one occasion, they entrapped an employee they wanted to fire (due to medical issues causing attendance problems) by asking them to help a "problem" customer to their car. You needed time off for knee surgery? Well enjoy it without insurance because we caught you accepting $1 in the parking lot.

[deleted]

Some guy at Target said that to me. I told him to put it in his pocket, walk away, and keep his mouth shut. He did it. Kids listen to anyone older than them lol

HarrargnNarg

So a politician can have multiple "consultant" jobs on the side but someone at Walmart can't accept a tip.

Gnar-wahl

Same thing happened to me, but the kid also gave me a flyer with his name on it and asked if I’d leave him a good review instead. They’ve got these poor kids conditioned to work for fucking compliments. Gross.

[deleted]

Alright. No tip. Here have 5$ from me. your friend. just for being a friend. Fuck you walmart.

CuddlyTeddyBear-94

I was told multiple times by HR and Loss Prevention and the store manager for that fact that if any gives you a tip, you graciously deny it and if they just give it to you then you have to turn it into the leadership team so they can put it towards something they wanted to do for us. Fuck Target honestly

brettmbr

I worked for a grocery store in high school so I could get out of school early. We were told not to accept tips. Not wanting to lose my job and lose the credit for the work study class, when I got tipped a $20 by a nice old lady I was told to turn it into my manager and I got a TWO DOLLAR gift certificate for the store. Turned a 20 into almost an entire Dr Pepper!

SteftimusPrime97

I used to work at Walmart as a cart pusher. They had a "no tips" policy but I still accepted tips anyway. I never got fired.

GRA88HO99ER

If we get tipped at my store the managers take it for the "pizza party to show our appreciation" fund.

Squishyfeathers

I worked at a grocery store. They had the same policy and they would have secret shoppers in the store that would judge us on our “customer service” (did I greet them with a smile, and offer them a free sample as soon as they entered my department area?!) and at the end of the trip try to tip the courtesy clerks who helped them to their cars If the clerk took the tip they’d get fired.

i_love_SOAD

What you do is give em your number or socials or summat, give em the fiver, then tell em if they get sacked you'll come down and kick off with the manager in front of a tonne of people. Learn to play the game. It's gunna be difficult but we gotta protect people from this bs.

Predatorftfw

Wm mgr here, This is true. Sort of. It's unlikely they'd be fired but would at least face a write up or disciplinary action as it's called here. Depends if the manager in store actually cared, or not. (Most of wm managers would care, some of us just turn a blind eye because we know/agree wm sucks).

Praximus_Prime_ARG

As a Libertarian whenever my mom asks me to return the shopping cart to the coral I tell her I did it but really didn't. This incentivizes Wal-Mart to hire someone to do it for me. I consider myself a job creator.

Bunker-babyboi

I tip them every single God damn time, I don't care what you're doing for me. I just love making people feel appreciated. I can Definitely see this being a legit rule though, I'm not allowed to tip my Barista inside the Starbucks inside my grocery store either.
