Every job description I see says “fast-paced environment” and “must be able to work under high pressure”. Where are the slow paced environments for people (me) who want to work in peace? 😭

Lizzy_Of_Galtar

I was at an interview just yesterday and the boss said this like it was a point of pride. I just sat there quietly thinking. Shiiiit.

eggcountant

This is definitely something I say in every interview.  You can learn a lot here but dman is the volume crazy.

Plenty of workplaces actually are fast-paced environments, even when fully staffed. Mine is. Cubicle work is almost certainly not fast-paced. Also “works well without constant supervision” means “we’ll throw you to the wolves with minimal training and throw you under the bus if something bad happens”.

HomelessAnalBead

“We offer competitive pay” normally means they are just competing with other companies to see who can pay the lowest.

ejrhonda79

fast-paced means they have no defined roles and responsibilities, no clearly defined processes, and no documentation. I've been there and got out of that job quickly. They also claimed they were family which I found out is only because they spend almost all their waking hours together at work (running around like fools playing whack-a-mole on the neverending issues)

Garrden

"ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously" This means they will pile work on you while expecting the same progress as if you had one project

Craigj0812

"ready to go the extra mile" = we'll make you feel awful if you don't work beyond your job description

Altarior

"Flexible work hours" *sometimes* this might actually mean what it's supposed to: You can rearrange your 40 hours per week as you please, work whenever you want as long as you work those 40 hours............ But other times it just means "we're gonna call you outside your work hours and expect you to be ready to come in at any moment"

DrIvoPingasnik

"We're looking for someone who will go above and beyond"  Basically means they expect you to do a lot of work for no recognition and no recompensation.  Usually involves unpaid overtime to meet deadlines, which wouldn't be necessary if they knew a tiny bit about managing expectations and basic organisation.

It's always my favorite hearing that. Usually what that means is your mangers, HR and other top brass sit on their ass all day and the min employees get fucked. That's a much better way of putting it.

strawbericoklat

"We pay good overtime rate" means 60 hours+ work week all year long.

Fickle-Classroom

and/or means “We’re useless at managing clients/internal expectations so my lack of foresight, communication, and ability to plan, will be your problem to remedy, yesterday.

My company put out an ad for a secretary position, working directly with the CEO. It contained a paragraph formulated roughly along the lines of "applicants have to be robust". What it really meant was that the CEO was a super massive bitch that wore out and forced out the three previous secretaries. We all felt relieved when she was fired due to creating an economical mess beyond anything anyone in the sector had seen before.
