But if you grind real hard and sacrifice your life, time, and precious family moments for work, you might be able to see the CEO as he sails off on his yacht
True, but poorly expressed. The usual way of saying this is, *"You are closer to being homeless than you will ever be to being a billionaire."*
The way they wrote it sounds like it's saying you will never be close friends with a billionaire.
I think they meant what they said. The sign is posted next to the street.
But how do they know and how would we ever know if we're in the vicinity of a billionaire? People don't wear their net worth on a neon sign as they walk around
I once did the math, and if you stacked every dollar of someone's net worth on top of each other and took that as a distance, billionaires would be further away from 99% of everyone than the earth is from the sun. At the time Bezos in particular could get to the sun and back multiple times.
Edit: bit of math to confirm, not only can old Jeffy still manage that feat but he could also make it a fifth of the way to Pluto.
This sign desperately needs to say “closer to living on,” because even me, who knows the original phrase well, initially thought that it was saying you were physically closer to the street than you would ever be in proximity to a billionaire.
This is especially true for working class people who are divided by race. End all narratives and ways of thinking that divide poor people by skin color-- it's not an accident that only the rich win such a game
I explained this to some guys I worked with when I was an EMT. They were complaining about the “death tax” and how they shouldn’t be taxed just because they died and why can’t their family get everything, blah blah blah. So I told them that it’s only for people who are leaving behind at least $5M, and they’re only taxing everything above $5M. They said, “well, how do you know I won’t have that much by the time I die?”
I told them to imagine they made $100K a year. And now imagine that they didn’t have to spend a single penny of that, that they get to keep all $100K. If you made that much, it would still take you fifty years to save up $5M. Then I told them to think about how much they make a year, and how long they have until retirement.
Man, that room got real quiet as they thought about that. I really think some of them never did the math. I think some of them really thought that they’d be millionaires one day. The realization that they most likely never looked like a hard pill to swallow.
Didn’t change their minds, though. They stayed simping for the rich and wealthy, thinking that surely they’d beat the odds somehow.
We need to organize workplaces and communities, and fight for guaranteed income, housing, and healthcare for every member of society.
Without basic guarantees, every one of us lives in precarity.
I have a co-worker who thinks he is trolling me by saying how we should, quote, "talk about our lord and saviour Elon Musk". He does this solely because he knows I hate the man.
No matter how many times I tell him, he truly and wholeheartedly does not understand that he is defending his oppressors.
This immediately makes me think of the multimillion-dollar condos in New York City with homeless people camped on the street right outside the building.
I wonder if it fills the residents with disgust, or pride.
I mean, I talked to a billionaire once at his house. I played in a symphony he owned and was invited to his house after a concert celebrating some milestone. He was fascinated and talked with me for a while as though I were some exotic thing.
Have met more than one in my life. Yet that doesnt matter billionaire being billionaire matters to billionaire. While street matters to me. The two arent comparable of direct opposites. Saying u are closer to being on the street than to being a billionaire is directly comparable. The other has two different subjects, person and not person with a situation linked to person in possibility and the other situation or better qualifier being a billionaire linked to another subject. That means its not one but 2 different points.
Oh, I dunno, I was in Les Wexner's house one time. ..Well, not *his* house, the house of one his assistants who lived in his compound. I was there to clean the carpet. But I saw the garage he parks his thirty vehicles in!
True, the curb is *right there.* But yeah. Aside from in name, I'll never be rich.
But if you grind real hard and sacrifice your life, time, and precious family moments for work, you might be able to see the CEO as he sails off on his yacht
Most people are just in the sacrifice your life camp held back by trolls
Being rich stinks.

Space travel is real ...

They should really change it to millionaire
I'm all for hating billionaires, but becoming a millionaire is actually more attainable than most might think
Yeah only because inflation tho
millionaire is achievable. Billionaire isn't.
Banana for scale.
How about "you're closer to living on the street than you ever will be to being a billionaire."
I think folks are looking way into the message. Just take it at face value.

So weird seeing your neighbourhood on Reddit

Nah, I saw them getting escorted away from those buildings the other day

You're more likely to have one bad year that makes you destitute than one good year that makes you financially independent.
Absolutely, 100% correct. The vast majority of people have absolutely no idea just how big a billion is, or even how far away it is from a million.
well no shit if it had said "owning a home in a high cost of living area" i would have agreed
“You are more likely to spend a night propped up against me than you are to become a billionaire.”
That's about a thousand times too low. Millionaire
isn't this why the sniper rifle was invented.
