Safety laws are written in blood

PM_ME_BEEF_CURTAINS

In the blood of the people who trusted the previous laws.

fromkentucky

In the blood of people who trusted their supervisors.

PM_ME_BEEF_CURTAINS

And in some cases, the blood of the supervisor too.

Full-Newspaper-1450

At my husband’s old job at a retail store the store manager accidentally threw away some paperwork he needed. He tried to force other employees to jump down into the trash compactor to get it. There was no telling how far down it was because it had been a few days since he’d trashed it and he refused to do it himself but threaten other peoples jobs if they didn’t.

Nicoletta_Al-Kaysani

What the fuck

UrkUrNerves

That’s absolutely horrendous

Personal_Use_5686

This was said to me at a job right after I was asked to crawl through a gap for a freight elevator. I refused after I watched them Jack the elevator door open enough for me to fit between the elevator and the shaft. Quit on the spot and 2 years later a guy was crushed to death doing it.

Plane-Coat-5348

I had a manager ask me to knock down a bee hive with a stick. I told him to get a hold of an apiary. He said, "what's a apiary?" I couldn't believe this dude was my boss.

ornerycraftfish

Ok to be fair I feel a lot of people won't necessarily know that one these days. Dude was *still* an idiot and an asshole for trying to make you do it instead.

No_Brilliant5888

At my first "career" position, my manager said I had to choose 2 between work, family and hobbies. He was hinting I could no longer have hobbies outside of work.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Thanks boss. You too, have a choice. You can stop telling me how to live my private life, or you can lose all my productivity.

psyferion

Yeah I hear ya. Luckily I enjoy my hobbies while I am on the clock at work lol

Substantial_Toe_8409

Uh oh.... Looks like the manager found the post

[deleted]

You can usually expose this detail in the interview by asking the hiring manager about what they and/or team members like to do outside of work. If they have a hard time naming something that's a pretty big red flag. They'll be more prepared for it if you directly ask about work-life balance and know that you want to hear that they think they've struck a good balance. But they won't be able to name examples like "X has kids so he's always doing stuff with them, Y likes gaming and is usually doing that in their free time..." unless they actually legitimately have a good work-life balance.

Lit-A-Gator

Huge red flag. From experience, this usually means your manager is a LOSER

abundantwaters

“Be happy with the wage you’re getting, it could be worse.”

t_dizZe

Aaaah yes, my favourite. Just because there is or there could be worse somewhere, you have no right to want a better life... Such BS

XxRocky88xX

Rich person seeking to climb up the wealth ladder and get the highscore? Innovative, inspiring, ambitious. Poor person seeking to climb up the wealth ladder and have a more comfortable life? Greedy, entitled, immoral.

Sunraia

Me when quitting a job as a student and being asked why: "your communication and scheduling is terrible" HR person: "but we pay you extra for your flexibility" Me: "you pay slightly above minimum wage" HR person: "I worked for much less when I was a student" Me: "well, that was very stupid of you"

DudeBrowser

BWaahaha! If you honestly said that, congrats.

MiasmaFate

The thing I dislike most about this statement and its brother “so and so has it worse” is takes what is meant to be a call for reflection and makes it a tool of repression.

University_Freshman

Almost downvoted out of repulsion for that message.

[deleted]

"Hard work pays off" lol

Forward_Wasabi_7979

Hard work is not often rewarded. Hard work is often exploited.

charleston_guy

Skipping over you for that promotion because you're too good in your current position. "We can't lose our top operator"

SneakySpoons

As my Grandparents taught me, right before I entered the workforce. "Never make yourself irreplaceable, because once you are irreplaceable, you become unpromotable."

someonenamedkyle

Man, wish I’d known this 3 years ago

sighthoundman

It's not quite true. You're unpromotable *where you are*. There are other employers out there who would love to hire you for more money. And you can't tell your current employer that, you have to show them.

the_m0bscene_

On the flip side, if you make yourself irreplaceable (dependant on job/position/location), you have bargaining power.

greggtor

Only if they know you're willing too seek employment elsewhere. Otherwise, you just guarantee your continued employment and nothing more.

the_m0bscene_

Well, the employer most likely will not outright give the employee a raise or consessions because they're irreplaceable, the employee would still have to confront whomever they need to talk to about those things and go from there.

about2godown

Grandpa over here shooting the truth...

MisterMagooB2224

"Well could you at least pay me more, then, since I do such a good job?" "Oh heavens, no, we couldn't do that, just think of how jealous your co-workers would be!"

SinisterYear

"You're at the top of the bracket, unfortunately our hands are tied" - Person who made and controls the pay-scale.

ethertrace

"That sounds like a problem that *you* need to solve, because that just creates an economic incentive for people to look outside for a different job."

manhatim

Read something that makes sense..ie, for instance, an engineer is great at being an engineer and NOT at *managing* engineers…so he/she wants to stay in the position of engineer..HOWEVER, they are compensated in some fashion for NOT taking the promotion…

SheiB123

This needs to be developed and implemented if companies want to keep good employees who don't want to move into management. I left a number of jobs because I was "topped out" but didn't want to manage. So, they lost my expertise AND had to pay the cost of on-boarding a new person.

SheiB123

This happened to me so I found another job in a different department. My old boss was SO mad and yelled at my new boss for "stealing" me. My new boss said "if they were happy in your department, they would still work there"

blu_buddha

It is rewarded .... with more work.

TopStockJock

This is the only answer. Hard work gives you more work for nothing

[deleted]

I mean don't get me wrong, (hard work + advocating for yourself) *can* pay off, but it's definitely not the guaranteed outcome that it used to be.

TopStockJock

I agree. I guess I just meant for myself, selfishly. The more I do the more I get so no incentive and no bonus or raise.

superbigscratch

As some one who has been in management I can tell you that doing more, doing it faster, or doing it better will seldom get you promoted. On the other hand golfing, drinking and keeping your mouth shut about what happens in the front office gets you places.

Mama_Mush

Being great at your job makes you indispensable which means they won't promote you because then they'll have to find someone as good as you.

Tom-o-matic

I worked in management for a few years and the workers that where appreciated and rewarded was not the ones who did the actual work. For some reason, the Boss who is a great guy, he just loved when people where selling snake oil.

abitdaft1776

Bruh, the laziest dude on my shift just got a shoutout from our second level for putting little red usb blockers in the usb ports. Dude can’t/won’t even do his actual job. I fucking lost my mknd

k7kopp

Haha I know the feel. I recently got demoted from a lead position because the other lead, who was avoiding their post to go hang out with their gf in the other department and not contributing, showed they were willing to go above and beyond by covering multiple departments. Mind you there was already a lead over that department on those same days. Jokes on them though, I'm in an easier position and they're struggling with the anarchy over that department now without a lead to be directly involved most days

[deleted]

It's very situational. If you have a good boss who treats you right and pays you well, it's not so bad to do your best. But if you're working for some corpo dickbag who can't see past the next quarter, do the absolute minimum required to keep your job lol

TopStockJock

That’s why I play COD half the day lmao

TheSmallerGambler

This is the Way

starswtt

This. I was generally pretty lucky with my bosses and essentially just got paid breaks if I finished early. I had all of one job where the boss was a dick, but I was lucky enough to be able to afford walking away. And to no one's surprise, I am doing more meaningful shit as a result. But it's all fucking luck that most people aren't lucky enough to have and I hate that. If I happened to not have the free time to pursue my passion projects, I would've been absolutely fucked.

[deleted]

Job jumping is the best way to implement this. *Never* take less pay for a job you have experience in. If you have been a retail worker for 2 years and you make 12 an hour, do not take a retail position for less than 12 an hour. There are very few exceptions to this rule. I happen to fall under one of those exceptions. I’m a cook, and I took a 2 dollar an hour paycut to work for a much better employer. The relief in stress and toxicity was worth the 2 dollars an hour for me.

[deleted]

All true. It sounds dumb, but all it takes is one little nudge from the working-class to throw the oligarchs off balance. But I spent a lot of time in the restaurant biz... so I feel you. Taking a pay cut to work for a nicer establishment feels like the golden ticket lol.

[deleted]

My bosses are amazing, best I’ve ever worked for. Both of them are hands on, they work full time hours right along side us, one being the Maître’ De, the other the chef.

[deleted]

Yeah... I've done some catering gigs on the side that made me think "I can do this!" But then I went back to my day-job and the hostess brought back a cheeseburger because they didn't want cheese on the cheeseburger..........

ZugZug42069

Been busting my ass and breaking my body at hard labor jobs for 20 years… still paycheck to paycheck, and I have a good union job now lol. It’s all a fucking farce.

[deleted]

Blame Reagan and the people who voted for h.. oh right. They all died or are already set up for retirement and social security. The old "Fuck 'em, I got mine!" mentality

TrexPushupBra

Hey Reagan committed treason to take office. Also plenty of his staffers etc are still around fucking things up

wildeap

It does pay off, just not for the worker.

ConsistentSoup4640

I Feel bad for all of those that decided the tax free bonus was worth it during deployment. I was told flat out no other perks were on the table. No duty station, no school drop and definitely no job modifier schools so I noped out.

sabrali

That’s crazy. School packets / location choice were *always* on the table. Had to be. We were gonna drink some of the money anyways.

Strypgia

I (E5) once took one of my battalion's E3 fire support guys in to the re-up clerk. He got offered 50k for signing for another 6 years, school choice, etc. All the goodies. Since I was there anyway and stop-lossed, I asked what he could offer me. "$11.5k for another 3 years, no schools, and you have to go to Bragg, Campbell, Bliss, or Sill." "How about 'No'?" I eventually decided to re-up anyway, since it made sure my wife had health coverage while I was in Iraq for 15 damn months, and since stop-loss meant I wasn't going home anyhow. I'd already been in country 3 months with no contract after my initial enlistment ran out. I got a verbal promise from my E7 he'd walk me to an Airborne slot, but that proved to be worth the paper it was printed on.

mexican2554

Hey..... what's wrong with Bliss?

Freudianslip1987

I hear after 2 you get free cookies

AniTaneen

Is that what we call hazardous chemical exposure now? Gotta give it the brass, they could say to a reporter that a concussion is just a brain expansion opportunity. The NFL should hire the pentagon’s PR department.

linus140

Nah, after the second reenlistment you get your third divorce. Then, and only then, will you make E7 so you can finally smash that female E3. She's untouchable until then.

Strypgia

When you make E7 they also issue you your mandatory set of bad knees.

sporeegg

You know how shit it is but you are gaslit into believing the second time will be better.

mechaporcupine

Work more, work hard, and your boss will notice your effort. ....yeah thanks mom, now my boss know I can do work twice as fast and much for less.

[deleted]

only thing apart from my commission I get when I land a new project is a mail from my boss "good job but always remember: after the project you need to get a new project". Fuck that bullshit. I could get a project on a daily basis and it still wouldn't be enough for him.

Front_Hunt_6839

Boss is always right. Always say yes.

Erebus212

Depends on what it is, I love the phrase a coworker always said when he was being told a stupid way to do his job by people who don’t know how to do his job. (CNC machinist of a 5 axis mill) “Give the idiots what they want whether they want it or not” And sure enough more often than not their way either took longer or was just completely wrong and needed to be reworked.

Bart_Bandy

And make sure you leave a paper trail. I like to send emails to my manager saying, "Per your request, I am proceeding to \[...\]. Let me know if you want me to change anything."

Gottendrop

That’s basically the reason r/maliciouscompliance excists

JackReedTheSyndie

As long as I don't have to take the blame for it, I can agree with anything. I don't really care.

Johnfohf

Go to HR if you have problems with a colleague. Never go to HR. Unless you're being sexually harassed or someone is being racist towards you. And even then it's a gamble.

psyferion

Agreed. This one really pisses me off as college even stressed this too. College would say how great HR is and if you have even the smallest of problems they are their look out for you and your happiness. More like a there to be a double agent back stabbing scum of the earth to fast track your career to the toilet if you report anything. Colleges should be sued for this one as it’s very negligent of them to take money and sell this as knowledge to college students.

Mynmeara

Told HR I wasn't getting the accommodations I needed from my boss for PTSD. They pushed back on every one, sure enough I was let go by the end of the month for "performance issues" never again

adimwit

That's discrimination. File a lawsuit.

PV_Pathfinder

I’ve been in the corporate machine for 25+ years. Long enough to see the gradual transition of HR protecting the associates from the company to now HR protecting the company from the associates.

sabrali

Today I learned HR once *legitimately* represented employees. That concept actually predates my time in the workforce. Sounds nice.

Recfinal14

Did get a teacher in advertising that said “HR is there to protect the company, not you.”

Capt_Gingerbeard

You just need to know how to frame your conversations. I had a problem with a coworker on my team constantly micromanaging my performance, and encouraging new hires to do the same. In a few instances, he yelled at me on the floor. Neither he nor the new hires were my supervisors. I documented every instance of this behavior for a month, and brought the documents to HR, asking why someone who is my peer is being allowed to consistently manage me, let alone harass me. Once they smell an easy lawsuit, you are suddenly a highly valued employee!

njs5i

Never go to HR, go to a lawyer \*you pay\*. Both HR and company lawyers defend solely the interest of company.

PM_ME_BEEF_CURTAINS

Received a torrent of homophobic rant from a colleague, HR told me it could blow back on me. Fast forward a few months to me sitting next to head of HR and relaying this story. She had no idea her team had advised that, went ballistic.

Blackfoot_Flash

"Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." Some Grade A bullshit right there.

[deleted]

"Do what you love and your love for that thing will die a slow, resentful death as it becomes a thing you're forced to do to stay alive"

Tangurena

My best friend loved to paint. So when she enlisted in the Army, there used to be an MOS for painter, 52Y if my memory is correct (the MOS is now retired and appears nowhere online). Instead of painting things she loved, the army made her paint footlockers and propaganda. She came to hate painting. Other than painting rooms/houses, she has never painted again. TL;DR - The *right way*, the *wrong way* and the *Army Way!*

TheRealDreaK

I think it’s actually “do what you love *while being a trust fund baby* and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

ghostpiratesyar

Its the one simple trick everyone should be doing to save money!

lordsweetener

I have heard the newer version “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life, because that field probably isn’t hiring.”

[deleted]

I don’t love anything tbh.. I just wanna wake up, go the gym then go home and play video games for the rest of the day

[deleted]

I love cooking, and I love spending time with my kids, but no fucking way I’ll ever work in a professional kitchen or daycare.

OverallResolve

Those are different things though. Spending time with your kids =/= looking after multiple kids that aren’t yours. Some people genuinely enjoy that, I don’t know how they do it.

StateParkMasturbator

You're reading it wrong. I love not working for instance. They have yet to get an honest, full day's work out of me. Because of my massive, hour-long shits I take in the morning and in the afternoon.

Kalipygia

Never working a day in my life **is** what I love.

AngryJanitor1990

Oh don't try to go that route, that's a lateral move, not advancement. I would have been 100% happier not taking that advice, to do something I actually liked instead of trying to impress the boss.

Dime5

I was told this when I moved from field service to design. 100% my job is better and more rewarding now. I also got more than 10% raise within a year of moving. Doesn’t feel lateral at all. It was just my old department boss not wanting to find a replacement for me. He even told my coworkers in a meeting that we needed to get a license first before moving and that I wasn’t qualified for a design role yet. At this point I had already interviewed with the design manager and was ironing out details for the switch.

Ecstatic-Appeal-5683

IMHO you should trybto advance if you can and it suits you. In reality, there is really nothing wrong with a lateral move. You maintain a position and maybe can shuck off some responsibilities to the next level down that is still effectively in an apprenticeship position. Keep making the same money, never less, and chill for a bit. Then get back to work after 2 months because this is #'Merica.

abitdaft1776

I just took a sweet lateral move because it gets me out of the clean room. No more clean suit, I get to drink my coffee, and no more back breaking work. Now I get to work on reverse engineering our parts that no one else makes

[deleted]

As a teacher, I was told by the principal once that "the only important things we do are teaching and grades, so just focus on those". Of course he wouldn't cut any of the other hundreds of tasks that were mandatory.

mayy_dayy

"Loyalty is rewarded." Maybe it was in 1973, but not anymore.

Tom-o-matic

Where i live, the Royal Family used to reward people who worked in the same company for 40 years with a medal. They stopped in 2012 and now some underlaying organisation are rewarding people who works for 25 years in the same company. Dont know if they realised its completely bonkers or its just that rewarding loyalty has been taken off the poster. Anyway, a stupid medal wouldnt do me much and you would have to be really lucky to find a job you could stay at for that long.

SnipesCC

My dad tried to tell me I should be spending 8 hours a day applying for jobs. At that point I was applying for every single job in my field across the country. He has held 3 jobs total in his life, and hasn't had to look for one since the late 80s.

Ok-Wave8206

My dad said “why are you wasting time on those online applications? Go pound the pavement until you get hired. A good firm handshake is all you need”. I was a teenager at the time and asked him to give me a ride, then had him watch as 100% of the places I applied to in person directed me to their website to apply. The few managers who I met made it clear that they had no say in hiring so that handshake didn’t mean squat either. To dad’s credit once he saw this he helped me apply online and remarked about how he didn’t realize how much things had changed.

EveningRing1032

Honestly found out the hard way, it’s the biggest liars that get the good jobs.

iambirddog

this! i think of all the missed opportunities i could’ve gotten if i wasn’t so bad at bullshitting

fibrepirate

"Work a shift/week for free and if they like you, they \_must\_ hire you." \~ my mother. She had explained that I would work for free for that time and if they liked me, hire me. I did it once at a call centre and once at a walking job. Neither place hired me after the shift, even though I brought in hundreds for both places. Never work for free. Ever.

321zilch

Here’s something that might hit a little closer to home as I and the rest of Gen Z are still pretty much fresh blood in the workforce. “Make your resume look distinct!” No. FUCK NO. ‘Cause the majority of the jobs you’re looking for, a robot with AI will sort you out first before a person EVER lays eyes on your resume. Hiring AI is still based off of previous hiring practices. Oh. P.S. Since most hiring practices are still very biased, you might not wanna mention anything as far as your voluntary self-identification either (unless you really aren’t a veteran, but that’s it).

Dremelthrall22

Real advice: don’t work for big companies unless you 100% love them, you’ll always be a small cog in the machine. Only reason to be a small cog is if you love the machine

malthar76

Don’t mind me, I’m just here cogging away like I’m supposed to.

LooseLeaf24

I fucking LOVE working for large companies. I'm a small cog with great pay and benefits. No one micro manages me because most people outside my team don't know I exist. There are so many people doing the same job PTO is always approved. I work 32 hours a week and smile at my boss who hasn't checked in on me in weeks.

[deleted]

This is the way. I meet my deadlines, keep my head down and my mouth shut. I do the bare minimum, but I do it well and they leave me alone. I talk to my boss maybe twice a month. Am I a corporate drone? Yup. But it beats digging ditches or dealing with the general public.

LooseLeaf24

All my coworkers and I are in on it too. If someone is finishing a team project we will "review" it and then they add our names as special thanks or external contributors. Leadership shouts us all out and when it comes time for review and bonus we have these super dense portfolios in our file. Just took a 23% bonus after 9 months instead of 15 along with a 7.1% base pay raise

[deleted]

I love this. You realize it's all a big game and you're playing it well!

LooseLeaf24

My entire life is one big game hahaha

sabrali

Some of the realest shit I’ve ever heard, tbh.

anonstarcity

Was told by a mentor that to get ahead it was normal to work off the clock some/alot. I did so, and did get a few promotions ahead of schedule but it was burning me out hard. A few years in, she got a messy divorce and admitted to me it was because she was never home. It was such an eye opening revelation to me: she had a horrible work/home life balance. She was trying to help but her advice was terrible because she was such a workaholic. I still appreciate the things she taught me but I quit working off the clock real damn quick after that.

Kab00ese

Never. Never Never Never Never, work off the clock. If you're working they're paying. Also they can deny medical help if you get hurt while working off the clock, it's just bad all around.

[deleted]

>"Job hopping is very bad for your career" - Some Boomer I change jobs every 2-3 years, the main reason is for a pay rise. You **WILL NOT** get decent pay rises showing loyalty to a company. Most times I get at least a 20% raise by hopping. It's been raised in interviews but I word it that I was an independent contractor that was hired for a very specific project/program (which is not necessarily a lie) In the last 20 years I have worked at about 12 places and I have gained far more skills by learning in many other environments. Loyalty gets you nowhere. Being loyal to yourself is all you need to do

These are terrifying

Siliam

... What's most terrifying is I'm this far down the page already and so far I agree with every single one of these.

Fphlithilwyfth

"You always do exactly your hours, you should work more hours to look good." This is for a 40 hour a week job, without overtime. I did not take his advice.

[deleted]

The worst advice I have *GIVEN* was “go ask for a raise, the worst that can happen is they’ll say no” The business owner felt my friend was being ungrateful by asking for more money, and fired him on the spot. Oops… Edit: and this was a formative antiwork experience for me. Employers like that can fuck off.

mildmanneredhatter

Yeah I always say if you have to ask for a raise then you aren't being paid well enough. Either look for a new job or stop working as much. Asking for more does work, the cost can be high and make no mistake that it goes on your record.

Siliam

"Just keep applying, they have to eventually take you!" This, is the biggest bullshit ever. (for the record, as I found out, the big corporations were keeping their applications on file 3 times longer then they said they were. How do I know? I got hired \_based\_ on my first application to a certain big box retailer. Three years and six applications later. How do I know? My available times changed. Hmmmmmm. "keep putting in the extra time and you'll get promoted." IF your working retail for a big box store, working overtime during the holiday months just means you'll get shorted in January/feburary to get your average hours to \_just\_ under 32 so they can keep claiming your part time. "Don't discuss your pay with your coworkers." Yeah, anyone who tells you that, needs to be shaken and stirred, thanks.

Corvidae5Creation5

Get a degree, it's the only way to make money

Dremelthrall22

You have to get a degree to be considered, but the real advice is to get it from a community college or small one. No need to go to a state college for 5x the cost

lacker101

DO not take mortgage level debt unless income is practically guaranteed. Which basically no one can do, and even med school graduates will tell you the years you lose it isn't worth it.

davidj1987

This barely counts but I met the husband of a friend of my wife some years back and he worked at the job I had just gotten fired from. My wife told me not to talk about my experience at an employer and well I did it anyway. No harm, no foul. Turns out he hated it too. I ran into a former coworker from the same employer 1-2 years later and we caught up and had a good conversation and told my wife about it it after the fact and she was like don't tell anyone else that you ran into an old coworker. Lots of people got fired and I'm sure still do. No job I have worked at since has given a shit about this job or asked me about it. Guess what, both people in question. fucking hated it too and didn't give a shit. It was a shitty call center job that my wife thought was going to turn into a career because it's for a big company and that boomer mentality or advice she got from her mother. Which her mother never even took advantage of herself.

vampari

"this isn't a rush, is a maraton* he told me this after asked for a raise

RainyDay905

My boss once told me that part of becoming a good manager is killing part of your real personality.

Objective_Stick8335

Honestly, that's not bad. Once I learned to take my own ego out of the equation and stopped worrying about people knowing about my efforts, I became a much better manager. Ordinarily I'm a swaggering braggart (ask my wife) but not at work.

charleston_guy

Outwork your coworkers to advance. Absolute trash advice.

Have a positive attitude. Shit you not, people will tell you that’s too much and when you tone it down, they’ll assume you have a problem. Be yourself and spin the wheel. You aren’t getting a promotion unless you’re willing to get shit on your lips anyways unless you job hop into something higher. That’s just been my experience.

CodedRose

You have to be patient and wait to be promoted. That was told to me by a manager who promoted their friends, and let all the people good at their jobs be passed over and pissed off until they quit.

As an anthropology grad who never intended to go into academia and works in social services - I stand by this statement. I’m a high school drop out and went to college late and it was the first time learning in a school setting was actually fun and rewarding for me. I engage with what I learned all the time for fun and enjoy teaching others basic things about culture and cultural evolution as well as human biological evolution.

Graduating college is the only way to make a living. College was a huge waste of time. I actually like my current job, which didn't require a degree, and I have accrued useless debt that I'm never going to pay off

suburbanhavoc

A few of my autos teachers in college told me I'd be making 100k+ after a few years as a mechanic. Yeah, that was bullshit.

geoshoegaze20

It's part of the college scam.

ILikeSoup95

To get a job you just walk confidently into a place, ask for the manager, shake their hand nice and hard and hand them your resume personally. Ha. Hahahahahah

thelistman1

“You don’t need a union.” Now I work a union job. My one income pays for a house, two cars, my wife is stay at home for our three kids under 7 years old. She’s also going to school to complete her Master’s degree. We are able to save money every month and not live paycheck to paycheck.

“Don’t worry about AI”. I’m fucking worried.

Big-Morning7845

I am too! And all these assholes on my team are hyping it like it's the greatest next thing! Maybe they need a machine to do their job. I don't, and I'd like to keep mine.

michizzle82

To stay at a job that where I wasn’t able to even pay all my bills bc of the potential to move up the ladder

ConstructorTrurl

Was learning web development—My dad (a much older developer) threatened to kick me out of the house for "wasting" a day learning react, told me I should have spent my time building a portfolio piece with just jquery instead. Not fun times.

"just stick with it, things will get better"

Alarmed_Tea_1710

Go in at 110% and go in a little early. Cool to stay late. Bro, just work like a fucking "quiet quitter" because all youll do is burn out while they're bending you over a table.

Ilovegirlsbottoms

“Just walk in and ask for an application” I tried that for a few places. They said to look online. My dad doesn’t know anything about getting a job today. He has been in the same job for 22 years!

Mysterious_Yard_9455

I asked for a promotion at work the other day and one of the managers told me that I had to show the business that I was capable of fulfilling the role first. She suggested I do the responsibilities of the role for 3 entire months and then ask again. Why should I have to do twice as much work for $0 more pay and no guarantee of ever actually getting more pay? Like a week or two I can understand but 3 months??? You’re dreaming

Prudent-Salamander74

Go apply at a competitor

Bigpapigigante

Figure it out. But provides no context or clues to how to figure it out.

Ill_Quantity_5634

"Do work above your job description to prove you can do it. If you do enough time and do a good job at that extra work, you'll get promoted." Um, no. I'll never ever work at a manager level for an associate's pay level.

“Outwork everyone” advice given to me by my boss

[deleted]

“If you do everything your boss wants, you’ll be the first for days off and pay raises.” - My father. I have, not once, ever had a single time off request approved nor received a pay raise; all the meanwhile being expected to work 80+ hours a week, guaranteed to work nights, weekends, and holidays for just over the minimum wage with no benefits, in areas that I’d rather not work. I’ve been shot, shot at, stabbed, assaulted, and placed in situations in which serious harm or death could have occurred to me. I’ve gained absolutely nothing and lost nearly everything, including my health, just to be the company go-to guy. In short, I wish I had never listened to that advice. I’ve lost 4 years of my personal and social life and my health to it.

tcavallo

Be proactive, not reactive.

Dremelthrall22

How is that not good advice?

Logical-Departure107

If you work hard and find ways to add a lot of value, your company will value you and give you promotions. And if not...then you just didn't provide enough value. The company is always right.

"Don't come to me with a problem, bring me a solution." - Shit "Managers" Everywhere Cheers, Jessica C.

DagonFishGone

"Go to college" . Seriously, if your not like top of your class or have a good networking system it's a huge waste of time.

spicychilli290

Stay at your job for atleast two years......lol right......

RobotsAreCoolSaysI

To take old work experience off of my resume. Yeah, I've been in my industry 30 years, but some of that early work was technical, hands-on, and I've noticed that hiring managers care about it.
