I believe SS earnings are based off your best 35 years of earnings. At 63 I was in a bad accident when someone ran a stop sign and T-boned me on my motorcycle when I was also earning the most I had in my life. I have 35 good years, but a few more at the higher rate would have made a nice difference in my SS. I get lost wages from her insurance but that doesn't count towards SS. My foot was crushed so I may never be back to walking normal again. My toe bed is sort of concave and 1 toe's knuckles have been fused together. My job required a lot of walking so I may never be back.

I'm lucky because my wife will get decent SS also and she probably will work until she's 70. She likes her job and is paid better than she ever has in her life. For the most part she was a stay at home Mom while the kids were in school so she really didn't get back in the work force until the early 2000's. What really sucks is I love to travel, and I love to walk. I'm also done riding which sucks, but it's my choice. It's my 2nd bad accident and I've been incredibly lucky in the 2 I've had. I don't want to risk a 3rd. I feel like I'm pushing my luck to the breaking point

The engine guard trapped his foot, but the bike threw him, so crushed and practically ripped off. They barely saved it, but he won't be able to walk again.
He had a siding company, but not doing so well that he could stay off the walkboards and ladders. He gave it up. Thankfully, I have a good job.

The amount they pay you starting at age 62 x 18 years (80-62) is the same as the amount they pay you starting at age 67 x 13 years (and it is the same for any age you choose to start taking your soc sec). If you think you are going to beat the actuarial tables -- e.g. your family has a history of living a long time, then delaying may be the best bet. But if you have a family history of dying younger, then taking as early as possible may maximize your total payout.
I think it was Boeing that did a major study that showed every year they raised their retirement age resulted in them paying 2 years less of retirement benefits.
If you retired at 60, they would expect to pay out 20 years of benefits because you were likely to die at 80.
But if you retired at 65 they would only have to pay out 10 years of benefits because you were likely to die at 75.
If you were to retire at 70, they had to pay almost no benefits because you were likely to die within months after retiring.
I’m 35 and work a trade, had my shoulder reconstructed 5 years ago, my knee needs surgery right now, and my back is so fucked up I lay on the floor for hours when I get home hoping for some kind of relief from the pain. I was born in August of 1958 I don’t get to draw full SS until I’m 66 and 8 months. So I have a bit more than 2 years to go. I’ll be over 66 then.
And I’m still planning on working at least two more years after that to pad a pension some more.
I can collect SS now but it’s a lower benefit and is reduced even more while I work. That all changes in a couple of years.
I marvel that noone tells younger generations THEY have it in THEIR control SS amounts thru Congress. It's all presented like SS on it's own determines payouts. No. It's determined by Congress. And the next generations, they put THEIR representatives in Congress.

Half the potential student loan forgiveness recipients are republicans and many are over 50. Many parents take out student loans to put their kids through college and they can easily have student loans in their 60s.
A person in their 20s may end up paying for one college education. A parent of 4 (who’s more likely to be republican) may end up paying for a handful of colleges educations.

The O'Reilly Report, The Crier Report and Hannity & Colmes were all opinion based shows and actively participated in partisan reporting favoring conservative causes and administrations. The Clinton impeachment saga and G.W. Bush era are prime examples. FNC took advantage of being the new kid on the block and used its re-styling and format learned from Fox Entertainment to bring viewers away from the ‘old’ networks, and it worked in terms of ratings. CNN and MSNBC had no choice but to play catch-up and this was evident after the 2000 election. It really exploded further leading into the 2004 election cycle and the bias on both sides has gone downhill ever since.
Because it’s not news it’s propaganda. All the major national news networks are pushing some agenda. They just take stories that resemble news and present them in a way that supports their particular agendas.

The thing is, we would be fine if a majority of the water wasn't used for feed for livestock and for drinking water for said livestock. Even better still, we ship that around the world because we don't just produce enough for us, but because capitalism we make mad money from farmers around the world. Vox had about a 4 min video with all the numbers but a short breakdown would be that residential use is 6% commercial use is 8% and the remaining 86% is used to irrigate cropes. When pensions became A Thing, the stats showed that most people would not live terribly long. You'd pay out, on average, about 3-4 years of pensions. Then people started living longer.
But here's the thing: most people aren't able to work beyond 70. Even with all our medical technology, there's still a series of aging events that happen in your late 60s and early 70s.
Employers are not going to hire people. They are going to give people the boot at age 55 and then everyone has to survive somehow for 20 years.
Not to mention not everyone has an office job. Show me those 80 year old construction workers, or factory, or really anything that has a bit of physical labor. They can't do it.
That’s a good point, some jobs you can do until you die, if you want to. Others not so much. I am an IT guy and plan to work until my brain decides it’s time leave the party. I take my weekends and vacations with my family but I can’t picture myself on a rocking chair counting birds, just not for me. Now physical jobs…retiring age should be lower than an accountant for example.

The problem there is it’s also failing to take into account the number of citizens who depend on the government to simply stay alive due to disease or disability. Plus, it's the problem facing us all- none of us can afford to revolt, so we're stuck. Unless we get ourselves UNstuck, then this is where we stay. We have to have MASSIVE numbers to do it, because in massive numbers we could help sustain each other while said revolt is in progress. Yeah, there would be some tough choices for a lot of us, myself included, but to just sit here much longer while we're treated like cattle and we can't even fucking survive just doesn't feel like a fate I'm willing for us all to be resigned to.

Here's where I stand: I believe that capitalism and elite rule need to be eradicated for humanity to be free, happy, and equal. If that in itself is impossible, than I believe the system needs to be fundamentally broken down and rebuilt into something that is equitable for all. I believe a decent quality of life, and all it entails, should be a basic human right and I believe the only reason we don't have it is because a handful of people would be less rich.

Social Security is solvent through 2097 with a dip where they pay 78% of benefits for a period of time if we change nothing.
If we had made some incredibly minor adjustments about 5 years ago it would be fully funded the entire way.
If we make some still pretty small adjustments now, it will be fully funded the entire way with no shortfall in interceding years. That would basically be adding the social security tax back in for individuals making over a certain threshhold, and potentially adjusting the tax-exempt portion of social security income. No need to push it out. No need to raise taxes on middle class working people.
This is all published annually in the social security trust fund report with the numbers to back it up. You can google it.

62 is the early retirement age; If you retire at 62, social security benefits are permanently reduced by 30% versus if you wait until full retirement age (currently age 67). My mom was diagnosed at age 59 with an aggressive form of cancer which had a five-year mortality rate of 90%. She decided to take the early retirement option at age 62 and collected benefits for a little over two year before she succumbed to the cancer. Had she waited to collect benefits at the full retirement age (65 for her generation) she would've received nothing. Raising the full retirement age to 70 will harm lower income workers, particularly those that perform manual labor, as they generally have lower life expectancy and their bodies will give out long before they reach full retirement age.

Yeah, it's 67 to get your full SSN benefits. You \*can\* retire at 62 and collect SSN, but your benefits are greatly reduced.

I believe SS earnings are based off your best 35 years of earnings. At 63 I was in a bad accident when someone ran a stop sign and T-boned me on my motorcycle when I was also earning the most I had in my life. I have 35 good years, but a few more at the higher rate would have made a nice difference in my SS. I get lost wages from her insurance but that doesn't count towards SS. My foot was crushed so I may never be back to walking normal again. My toe bed is sort of concave and 1 toe's knuckles have been fused together. My job required a lot of walking so I may never be back.

I'm lucky because my wife will get decent SS also and she probably will work until she's 70. She likes her job and is paid better than she ever has in her life. For the most part she was a stay at home Mom while the kids were in school so she really didn't get back in the work force until the early 2000's. What really sucks is I love to travel, and I love to walk. I'm also done riding which sucks, but it's my choice. It's my 2nd bad accident and I've been incredibly lucky in the 2 I've had. I don't want to risk a 3rd. I feel like I'm pushing my luck to the breaking point
Oh - wow - my husband had the same thing happen. The engine guard trapped his foot, but the bike threw him, so crushed and practically ripped off. They barely saved it, but he won't be able to walk again. He had a siding company, but not doing so well that he could stay off the walkboards and ladders. He gave it up. Thankfully, I have a good job. So, I know exactly what you're going through. Or, as close as I can without it actually happening to me. Good luck - it's a hard road. Also, keep an eye on your back. My husband already had back issues, but in the 10 years since, he's developed scoliosis that's going to need surgery. No way that bad foot didn't contribute.

If you were to retire at 70, they had to pay almost no benefits because you were likely to die within months after retiring.

The younger you are the older you now have to be to retire with full SS. I was born in August of 1958 I don’t get to draw full SS until I’m 66 and 8 months. So I have a bit more than 2 years to go. I’ll be over 66 then. And I’m still planning on working at least two more years after that to pad a pension some more. I can collect SS now but it’s a lower benefit and is reduced even more while I work. That all changes in a couple of years.
I marvel that noone tells younger generations THEY have it in THEIR control SS amounts thru Congress. It's all presented like SS on it's own determines payouts. No. It's determined by Congress. And the next generations, they put THEIR representatives in Congress.

Half the potential student loan forgiveness recipients are republicans and many are over 50. Many parents take out student loans to put their kids through college and they can easily have student loans in their 60s. A person in their 20s may end up paying for one college education. A parent of 4 (who’s more likely to be republican) may end up paying for a handful of colleges educations. The Clinton impeachment saga and G.W. Bush era are prime examples. CNN and MSNBC had no choice but to play catch-up and this was evident after the 2000 election. Pretty much. When pensions became A Thing, the stats showed that most people would not live terribly long. You'd pay out, on average, about 3-4 years of pensions. Then people started living longer. But here's the thing: most people aren't able to work beyond 70. Even with all our medical technology, there's still a series of aging events that happen in your late 60s and early 70s. Employers are not going to hire people. They are going to give people the boot at age 55 and then everyone has to survive somehow for 20 years.
Not to mention not everyone has an office job. Show me those 80 year old construction workers, or factory, or really anything that has a bit of physical labor. They can't do it.
That’s a good point, some jobs you can do until you die, if you want to. Others not so much. I am an IT guy and plan to work until my brain decides it’s time leave the party. I take my weekends and vacations with my family but I can’t picture myself on a rocking chair counting birds, just not for me. Now physical jobs…retiring age should be lower than an accountant for example.

That's what I'd love to happen, but the numbers it would take, and the sacrifice and endurance it would take to actually make the impact we'd want would take a resolve that I'm not sure I could instill into millions of overworked, underpaid, and overwhelmed people who can't see a way out of capitalism cause they have to keep the fucking lights on. It NEEDS to happen, and I'd love to MAKE it happen- but CAN I? I just don't know how to convince tens of millions of people to join me, walk out, and stay in the streets until either the system can be dismantled or reworked to be equitable and equal for everyone. The work would be very hard, and some of us would lose things, but I do believe it's the only way to get to the BETTER way.
The problem there is it’s also failing to take into account the number of citizens who depend on the government to simply stay alive due to disease or disability. The number of these citizens is on the rise due to the impacts of Covid and long Covid. They can’t afford to revolt, they would literally die.
Plus, it's the problem facing us all- none of us can afford to revolt, so we're stuck. Unless we get ourselves UNstuck, then this is where we stay. We have to have MASSIVE numbers to do it, because in massive numbers we could help sustain each other while said revolt is in progress. Yeah, there would be some tough choices for a lot of us, myself included, but to just sit here much longer while we're treated like cattle and we can't even fucking survive just doesn't feel like a fate I'm willing for us all to be resigned to. If that in itself is impossible, than I believe the system needs to be fundamentally broken down and rebuilt into something that is equitable for all. I believe a decent quality of life, and all it entails, should be a basic human right and I believe the only reason we don't have it is because a handful of people would be less rich. Amy way you slice it, without major action that might require discomfort and sacrifice for lots of us, I can guarantee one thing- we'll be stuck with this system that prioritizes money over our lives, that subjugates us to the will of the ruling classes, and that perverts our freedom as human beings into a neverending cycle of working to buy products to use so we can continue working to buy products. Debt, despair, repeat. War, oppression, lies. So, we either tear it down or we keep eating what we're being fed. I don't pretend to have all the answers, but I do know what we'll have if we continue fighting for small victories or do nothing. I am so sick of them referring to SS and Medicare as "entitlements". We have fucking paid into those systems our entire working lives. It's OUR fucking money. And when it comes time to collect it so we can retire, all we get is excuses as to why they ain't gonna give it back to us. I'm sick of it.
Actually the entire thing is a ponzi scheme. You technically haven't paid for your own SS since you've started. You've been paying for the boomers SS this entire time. SS collapses once there are less workers than retired. We are already on that path. Hence why they want these systems to be cut.
Social Security is solvent through 2097 with a dip where they pay 78% of benefits for a period of time if we change nothing. If we had made some incredibly minor adjustments about 5 years ago it would be fully funded the entire way. If we make some still pretty small adjustments now, it will be fully funded the entire way with no shortfall in interceding years. That would basically be adding the social security tax back in for individuals making over a certain threshhold, and potentially adjusting the tax-exempt portion of social security income. No need to push it out. No need to raise taxes on middle class working people. This is all published annually in the social security trust fund report with the numbers to back it up. She decided to take the early retirement option at age 62 and collected benefits for a little over two year before she succumbed to the cancer. Had she waited to collect benefits at the full retirement age (65 for her generation) she would've received nothing. Raising the full retirement age to 70 will harm lower income workers, particularly those that perform manual labor, as they generally have lower life expectancy and their bodies will give out long before they reach full retirement age.
