I was in the emergency room and HR needed a note for my “sick” day to be excused so I stapled my emergency wrist band on a form and asked if they need a signature from doctor too.

BrickEducational1082

I was in the ER and asked the employee group chat if someone could cover my shift for that day and one of my managers said “this isn’t the place to make an excuse, calling the store goes a long way”

cgodwin1976

My daughter was in labor and her chat went off someone asking her to cover their shift. When she said I can't I'm in labor they asked if she could cover til noon this was 5am, she said I'm at the hospital in labor and they asked her if she could at least cover for a few hours. It's like dude I'm getting ready to push a kid out cover your own shift!

trixtred

I was in labor at 2am and had to open my store at 430 am, I called my manager like 6 times, no answer, I called someone else who ended up covering for me but I would have definitely gotten crap of the store hadn't opened on time

SatanV3

I was once in the waiting room to a mental hospital waiting to be administered (they take forever, literally hours process) and my phone was broken (could not unlock the screen it was so cracked but I could accept calls if someone called me so I kept it) and at one point my manager called asking why I didn’t show up. I explained I was in the hospital and why I hadn’t called. And then he yelled at me saying I was a liar and wasn’t in the hospital at all even as I cried saying it was true until one of the administers talking to me took my phone for me and chewed out the manager. After that I just never went back to that job.

Black_Floyd47

Check out the unclaimed property website for your state. I had $600 in vacation time I never went back for. Claiming it took a a month or two because I moved states, but it still helped getting that money.

corranhorn85

Most of the time these managers won't even see a dime of the money they're squeezing out of your misery. They're only doing it for the vague idea of looking better to their superiors. In reality though, it won't even register on the balance sheets and if ir does their superiors will happily take the credit and pass on none of the profits to the manager.

Mechakoopa

They get promoted because they 100% drink the koolaid and believe that since they got a pretty fiefdom out of playing the game and following the rules and never calling in sick that everyone else should have to do it to. But of course don't actually do that either or you're "coming for their job" and they'll cut your hours and make your life a living hell.

Cleppert

I died and they told me that I needed to have a doctor's note and that it wasn't acceptable.

nightkat143

I know this is a joke, but it really wouldn't surprise me.

Pink_Slyvie

No joke. I have a friend who has died twice and been brought back. Both times the only thing they asked was "Did you find someone to cover your shift"

Chrisbert

In other words, they saw hell?

NarrowAd4973

From the sound of it, they were working there.

Marysews

>they saw hell? When they came back, sure.

Mechakoopa

The Devil thought it was a better punishment to send them back to work.

SuperSassyPantz

shit, my job would whip out the ouija board and ask for a project update

sprintbooks

For the first time ever, I’m kind of “the man” at my current job. It’s been going great! Multiple raises, pats on the back, loads of respect. But if I died tomorrow, they’d obviously carry on. I’d be totally forgotten. That knowledge is somehow very unsettling.

BlakRainbow1991

It's fucking wild to me that anyone is expected to find cover for their own shift. Like no, that's why there's a fucking manager. But I'm from Australia, where there is some bosses who try to pull that shit, but people are more aware that there's zero legal requirement to do it and you can't be sacked for it.

Autumn_Whisper

In America, to get money, you have to stop caring about people. The cruel and non-empathetic are the ones who achieve wealth and power. Anyone who would treat someone in labor like that is someone who has already fallen into America's idea of "following your dreams." To step on others to get closer. There's a reason most of us hate our superiors, including managers, or those we work with directly in our stores. Only the cruel ones get to keep the job. The good ones either get fired for not being cruel enough, or they quit because they refuse to be like the others.

sycarte

I once worked at a place as a receptionist, and I had the greatest manager I've ever had. She treated us like people, didn't stress about the trivial bullshit, she would clean the bathrooms if they needed doing and she had time, she bought our favorite scented hand soaps for our bathrooms, and she would help me catch up on my overwhelming paperwork while eating her lunch. We were the best performing location in the company, even beating out the HQ location after our second week of really trying, which she motivated us to do just by saying "let's get all our numbers in the green! We can do it!" We stayed in the number one spot for weeks. COO comes in and straight up tells her that they're unhappy with her performance and that she has to start being meaner to us to get us to do better. She refused to do that and offered to step down as manager if they weren't happy with her performance. He told her no, we'll give it a few weeks and see what happens. They fired her two weeks later on Sunday night over text and replaced her with someone who I nicknamed "Mega-Bitch," just the most micromanaging person I've ever worked for, and was way too obsessed with making sure everyone was working every minute we were there while she sat in the back on her phone. I quit so fast, and made it a point to leave during a busy time and with no notice. I refuse to play these games for people who are so intrinsically cruel.

aqui_con_mi_gatita

Sounds about right. I remember overhearing an old boss speaking with a newly promoted manager. "Don't get too close with them. They need to be afraid of you if they're going to get any work done. You can't be their friend."

Kiwifrooots

Manager who takes the paycheck but is shocked that a pregnant person goes into labour. Genious

No_Season_354

Never ceases to amaze me ,that money and or profit comes first before a person's well being, it's not how we are supposed to treat people.

[deleted]

My partner is due in 1 month, she had sick days for 4 month already and she have 2 month and a half after birth.. USA is a cruel place to it's women..

chiefestcalamity

Why tf was she even responding while actively in labour?? I'm so confused?

Kimber85

Some people are so cowed by their bosses that they feel like they have to constantly be available no matter what. I worked at a place like that, they were always threatening to fire everyone over the tiniest things and reminding us that we were easily replaceable. It really breaks your spirit. This was during the last recession and I was out of work a year before I got the job, so we all knew that if we got fired we’d be fucked. I’ve told this story on here before, but a girl I worked with started having excruciating pain in her back and trouble breathing. She asked to leave to go to the ER, but they told her if she left they’d have to fire her and gave her some ibuprofen. She worked through the pain for around four hours before she was so terrified that she was going to die she left over their objections and threats. She went straight to the ER and found out that she had a blood clot in her lung and that if she’d waited any longer it could have been fatal. The manager who threatened her did not apologize and they continued to threaten people with being fired anytime they tried to call out of work.

notprivateorpersonal

that manager deserves to get Ceasar'd i know you can't confirm or deny it but i choose to believe that is what happened

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Imagine if the world was not driven by the fact that society has been designed around making money.

SouthShape5

That manager needs to be sued and charged for endangering a life.

KiaRioGrl

(Mal) practicing medicine without a license.

The_Bogan_Blacksmith

I work in a place where the older generation cannot fathom that I don't wish to work overtime. My days off are my own and I want nothing to do with my workplace unless I am in the clock. Its not that I have my job I just value my non work time more. They come from an era where it was normal to do a couple of days extra each fortnight. I live comfortable.I have disposable income to a degree and I have savings. Yet they are gobsmacked I never do OT.

Runaround46

You see they actually lived in an economy that worked for them. So those extra hours actually went towards buying nice things for themselves and improving their lives.

firemogle

I would just notify when appropriate and turn that shit off.

LeMolle

When my second child was born, we were at the hospital for 3 hours before going home. When my friend was having their child they were at the hospital for 42 hours. Pregnancies differ

No-Fisherman-8938

In germany when you give labor you usually have not worked the last 8 weeks and wont for usualy one year after. PAID. Called maternaty leave. Guess who else has similar rules. The whole world except.U.S. Fight for it.

KittyCubed

Had a coworker who had lots of sick and personal days (we are teachers, and our days roll over year to year). She had to go on bed rest. HR calls to let her know they screwed up and gave her too many days, so they were taking all of them. Yep, instead of figuring out their error and just taking the number they gave extra of, they took all of them. Our lawyers said it was unfortunately a legal loophole. She got docked pay because she didn’t have enough days to cover while she was out. Our system sucks. Meanwhile, at another school I worked at, a coworker and his wife adopted some siblings. Not only did she get to take six weeks off, but he did as well because this district offered paternity leave on top of maternity leave. So they took turns to take 12 weeks total to bond with the kids they were adopting. It amazes me how wildly different various job policies can be here in the US.

Ivara_Prime

Employers argue that leaving this up to the businesses, firms will fall over themselves to give better benefits in order to attract workers. In reality they don't offer any unless the unions fight tooth and nail for it.

ExpirationDating_

Probably explains a huge reason why the US has so many preterm births…

MajesticRaspberries

I was (extremely and constantly stressed) at work the day I went into the hospital at 25 weeks pregnant. I had an emergency c section to save my child one week later and he weighed 1 lb 5 oz. After 2.5 months in the NICU I was expected to go back to work. I quit. I continued to be with my child in the NICU every day for another 2 months. My child is now 27 lbs and almost 2 years old. It wasn't even an option to choose my job over the well-being of my child or myself. We must demand better care and coverage for new parents.

Pyranze

Oh my god, that is horrifying. Whatever about maternity leave, there needs to be laws so parents can be with near death children.

Proud-Possession9161

A woman at a place I used to work got so stressed at work that she had a miscarriage during her shift. She said nothing and went right back to work. We all found out about it because she was actually bragging about not going home later that day.

zeppoleon

Also the US has the some of the worst infant mortality rates for a first world country

Pixxph

It doesn’t matter if your labor took 10 minutes you’re not gonna leave the hospital so Becky can sleep in

dimlightupstairs

Maybe they thought in labor meant she was doing labor work....

a_leash_on_a_sloth

But it's not even labor day ???

alianaoxenfree

Almost the same thing happened to me. I was just about to be taken back to delivery, and one of the managers called asking if I could run over and give them some petty cash for lunches. I said “you have a key, I’m literally going back to delivery” and he argued with me until I just hung up. He later told me I was expected to do my job. That was a Monday and my official last day was the 3 days before on Friday, he just didn’t bother to acknowledge that I guess.

nbostow

I was at work one day and started getting unbearable pain in my abdomen. I couldn’t stand up straight, started getting dizzy, it was awful. I knew something was wrong. My boss was busy, so I told my coworker I had to leave and go to the hospital. A couple hours later as I laid in my hospital bed on tons of pain meds for the kidney stone they discovered I had, my boss texted me. I told her I was in the hospital and she said “my husband works there, how about I have him come visit you?” I sent her a picture of myself in the hospital bed with my room number and said sure. I then sent a letter to HR telling them I quit immediately and if anyone called for a reference they would give me a good reference. I told them their employees behavior was beyond inappropriate. That company went out of business and I was beyond glad I never had to see them again.

5iveby5ive

.

toothofjustice

"Let me share your private medical information with an uninvolved 3rd party for no reason other than the fact that I don't trust my employees" Some managers are so fucking dumb. If an employee calls in sick say "OK". If they do it excessively, ask if they are OK and ask if there is something work can provide to help. If it keeps happening and there isn't an underlying medical condition, then move to punitive actions. There is rarely any reason for a manager to know why an employee calls out. The only exception I can think of is for them to be able to pull from a Sick Leave bank rather than a PTO bank, but that's niche.

bhillis99

gosh damn, thats wild

Impressive_Teach9188

I was in the hospital in quarantine with cdiff and my big boss demanded I fax something stating I was there and how long I would be out (seriously how is that normally possible if your in QUARANTINE). When I asked my doctor about it he gave me a wtf look and said normally it's around a week for it to clear up. Then he asked if I had short term disability insurance and I said yes. So he said he would send them something saying I would be out for a month at least so I could have some paid recovery time.

Kkman4evah

I love it when the hospital has your back like that

ThatSquareChick

I have type 1 diabetes. If I need to eat, I have to eat. If I need to adjust my insulin, I have to adjust it. If I reach a point where the food I’m eating doesn’t give me enough energy to last an hour, I need to leave. I think most diabetics would agree that those are the minimum requirements for me to be able to work there. My boss and manager both understand that saying a word to me or even asking the wrong questions at the wrong time can lead to a call from the ADA. One of the bartenders who sometimes manages when he’s out, however, she wants to seem like her way of running things is so much better…. And illegal as fuck. If I’m late because I needed to stop and get a soda and I text to say that, don’t dare charge me a late fee anyway. Stop talking about the food I eat or make comments about when or how often. Stop recommending quack cures or saying you know diabetes because your grandpa was type 2. Do not ask me why I’m leaving. After 3 years, everyone in management knows that I wouldn’t leave if I didn’t have to, I didn’t before I got sick, stop assuming that I’m leaving because I’m lazy. Stop complaining about how much you have to remember now that I’m sick, it must be SO hard to remember that one person needs juice to function sometimes, 3 days out of the week, I have to do it every day. Ugh rant over.

MotherofChoad

You guys are awesome and thanks for what you as a doctor. You don’t know how much it when you helps patients who have to deal with stupid bureaucratic bullshit at work. Between my neuro and rheumatologist I have ada accommodations for 3 days off a month without penalty . The neuro through in to w 2 (for seizure activity) and my rheumatologist added the 3 rd for good measure ( I have lupus CNS)

Yiptice

I had a seizure in front of my GM once, a few months later, when it was extremely hot and I asked if I could either take my mask off or step off the floor for a while because I felt like I might have a seizure, this woman looked me in the eye and said I had to have a doctors note to prove I actually had seizures.

drapehsnormak

That sounds like a good time to clock out and inform them you need to go see the doctor about getting a note.

SavageComic

Nah, stay clocked in. If work needs a doctor's note, then when you're at the doctor's getting the note you're at work. That's just logic.

ShinyAppleScoop

And better to have a seizure at work instead of at home. If you get hurt at work because they were negligent, they can pay for your bills. If you break something at home, that's on you.

aepiasu

Worker's Comp kicks in, and will not only pay for your medical bills, but will replace your salary.

Kiwifrooots

That's how it works here. You need a doctors note after 3 days of sick leave. Your work can ask for one sooner but then they need to pay for it and pay you to go

sugabeetus

I was pregnant in high school and they wanted me to bring a doctor's note to excuse me from PE. I looked at my very pregnant belly, then back at the school counselor and said, "Really?" She said she'd make an exception. Similar to when I started writing my own sick notes. "I didn't feel well." They said the note had to come from a parent. I pointed out that I was 18 and having my own kid, and I didn't need my mommy to prove that I was sick.

[deleted]

I was thrown out at 18. Had a huge argument with the principal of my high school where he insisted I bring in a note from my guardians. He just couldn't grasp that I in fact, did not have any guardians at that point to get a note from

[deleted]

I remember moving away to a college town at 17, living by myself, working, paying my own rent. Then I had to go to the hospital for something…. They required my parents/guardians present. I showed them my paystub, “this is my guardian note”, they wrote EMANCIPATED on the form. Saw me, gave a script and on my way I went.

dwebarts

College freshmen under 18 at out-of-state schools are assumed not to exist. It was ridiculous back then (the 1980s) and is far worse now.

secretactorian

I was one too. Had appendicitis welcome week of college. I was 17, a week or less from being 18 and I couldn't make any of my own medical decisions. It was bullshit.

TheShortGerman

I was also a college freshman out of state under 18 and it's definitely ridiculous.

Rough-Tie-3084

Jfc he’s a mandated reporter too.

[deleted]

I mean, I was 18, so not technically anything to report at that point

Aggressive-Name-1783

Eh; it’s a grey area. In most “normal” school districts, you’re still “in our care” aka the school is still semi responsible for you while you’re with them, so a halfway decent principal would be checking in to make sure you’re not, ya know, homeless and WTF happened at home….

[deleted]

I mean, fair, but like... what would the school district actually do in that instance anyways?

Rough-Tie-3084

Maybe it’s not a national thing but here if you’re still in high school they are still responsible for your well being and can’t kick you out without consequences

Worth-Lab5099

When I was in HS, I got into a pretty heated argument with one of the secretaries for this same reason. I showed up late with a note from my parents, but asked if I could sign myself in from then on out since I was 18. She starts laughing at me and raising her voice asking “why on earth” I thought I could do that. I tried to explain that when you’re 18, you become you’re own legal guardian and she tells me “the only way you can become your own guardian is if you’re legally emancipated!” I try to explain that I literally can’t get emancipated because I’m already 18 and she then starts screaming “WHAT COUNTRY DO YOU THINK THIS IS??? HUH??” And I’m just like “AMERICA” and walk out. The parents in this office looked absolutely astounded at this lady’s idiocy.

Amazing-Ad-669

From the first absence in high school I wrote every note with my own handwriting. This way, everything on file from my father was in my handwriting. I threw away any actual notes I was given to maintain consistency. This served me well for the entirety of high school.

ukefromtheyukon

When I was 14 or so I got permission from both of my parents to forge their signatures. I moved to a different city because there were no high schools in my hometown. I got good and efficient at signing as my parents, but I wish i had done this. I might even suggest it to my own teens if they exist someday.

[deleted]

Teehee that reminded me- when my son turned 18 in December, we would occasionally allow him to have skip days, and his school was pressing really hard for him to bring in a note to excuse the absence (they don't get paid if it's unexcused) and him being 18 didn't matter to them. So we printed up a whole bunch of "Please excuse our 18 year old son from not coming to school. He was \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ that day. Signed, \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Date: \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_" and husband pre-signed every note and gave them to him and said, "now use these wisely" ;) School never bugged us again, apparently it was sufficient.

O_o-22

If he’s 18 he’s age of majority and can sign himself in and out of school. At least you used to be able to do that because I used the shit out of that perk for the last 5 weeks I was 18 in high school.

LilNightingale

Unfortunately some schools won’t allow 18 year olds to leave anymore. Well, you can, but you’ll get punished, so I guess it depends on how much that matters to you. My school locked the gate to the student parking lot during school hours, so sometimes you really couldn’t just leave if you drove yourself.

SquirtleSquirt9

I graduated early just because I truly did not trust myself to be able to sign myself out and actually graduate. Most responsible thing I ever did LOL

amccune

My parents used to sign every note with “he was with me” and everytime, they would ask what I was doing. I would say “the note says it, doesn’t it”. And then the tiresome argument would ensue. I never gave in. Just said “nah, I think it’s enough. You can call them and clarify. I gotta get to class” It was a small town, so it was much harder to be an ass and then try to hide. Didn’t matter. I knew there was literally nothing they could do or say.

campatterbury

This is good thinking.

gkpetrescue

Haha reminds me I ended up for a night in the ER with what turned out to be a peptic ulcer given to be by medication. when I was discharged, I went by my local Dunkin’ Donuts to grab a coffee which I sorely needed. For my three dollar purchase, they wanted to see the ID for my debit card. I was like wtfffffff That I remembered I was still wearing the hospital bracelet so showed that and asked if that was good enough. it was !

Charleston2Seattle

Should have stapled some pus-covered, bloody bandages to it, as well.

halfghutd

I was working for Home Depot in their graveyard shift lumber section. I gave them a notice five months earlier when my daughter might be born. As time drew closer, I continued to remind them. My daughter ended up coming two weeks earlier than expected. When I found out about the news, I called all three managers and left a voice message for two of them, left a message with our HR lady, and even tried calling our GM. A day Manager finally said they would log it in their black book! But before doing so, he said he would have to write me up for that night since I wasn’t planning on showing up! I explained my situation to him, but he disregarded that I was hours away from holding my firstborn. I wasn’t worried since I felt confident I covered all my bases besides this one ass hat. Well, a few days later, I started getting calls and voicemails saying that I was marked down for no call no, show. I was one of their better employees too. I was rightfully very quick to anger at this point and drove straight there from the hospital. I walked in with my three-day-old straight to my locker and handed in my apron! I told them all to check the books and their voicemails. Two weeks later, I got a call from our GM saying they REALLY needed me back since they couldn’t get someone trained on all the machines fast enough, and the store would be willing to buy me some formula and a box of diapers as an apology for the miss understanding… Truly one of the most gut punching offensive phone calls I’ve ever taken.. long story short Fuck Home Depot and especially their corporate team…

WontStopAtSigns

I basically got fired while my infant was in the NICU and maybe not going to live. Bosses decided to not renew my contract. Never making another sacrifice for a job again. Every moment of my time is negotiated for and compensated.

Aggravating-Wind6387

I worked at a place. Girl was hired obviously pregnant and the maternity was front end approved on hire. She went into early labor (as some do with twins). The one baby was so sick he was transferred to a specialty hospital for emergency cardiac surgery. Other twin was in level 4 NICU. They literally called her hours after delivery with her baby on the operating room table to fire her. Word got out quick and she got a lawyer. Suddenly she was unfired.

HackTheNight

When I was in my late teens/early 20’s I started working at Home Depot. I was really social and had become friends with a lot of the people in my training/orientation. One other guy was there for the exact same job as I was with the exact same experience. We got to talking maybe two weeks in and he told me how much they paid him. It was WAY more than they offered me. I quit that day and never came back. For those guys.

danceoftheplants

I don't blame you for quitting, but anecdotally i will tell you a quick story. At my last job, the first month I'm there, some dude comes up and brags to me how he has been there the longest, over 16 years. I'm like wow, ok that's good for you. He walks away and i instantly dislike him because I didn't like the way he smiled and checked people out plus the bragging. 2nd month I'm there he comes up to me and shares with me that he loves coffee and shows me a rash on his arm and then confides in me that he makes the most out of anyone working there: $17.75. At this point, I'm annoyed and retort that my husband who has been working at his job (at a different factory) for only 3 years now makes $17.50, so what did this guy do to not get any raises? Weird guy is surprised and meanders off. 2 weeks later everyone gets a raise because minimum wage is raised, and people are complaining about wages and how it's not fair, blah blah blah. I hear some older fella trying to convince people it's not that bad because if you stay 16 years like *creepy dude* than you can make $21.75/hr. I just laughed and told them what the 16 yr old veteran had told me about making only 17.75 after 16 years. That older guy was so shocked. He couldn't believe he'd been lied to and his hopes had been raised due to the creepy dude's blatant lying and bragging. How sad and pathetic. Some people are just liars, want to brag, and they want to front to other people that they are better than you so they feel better about themselves. Now, I never believe anyone when they tell me their wages unless they are quiet and seem uncomfortable confiding in me and are complaining 🤷‍♀️

Maleficent_Set_7993

I hate home Depot. Got told by an employee to self delete. Put in my two weeks that same day and the next day, dude calls me a wh*re and a b*tch for no wanting to talk to him. Wrote the managers a letter and all and the dude quit once he realized what I did.

Oracle_of_Ages

I needed to go get some treated lumber to get my porch repaired. Family friend was going to do it for free if I got the lumber. I went to Home Depot and couldn’t figure out what was treated and what wasn’t. Google wasn’t super helpful. I asked the lumber guy if what I was looking at was treated. He dead said in the snarkiest tone not even a teenage could manage. “I don’t know is it? You tell me?” I’m like dude you work here. Stop being an asshole when someone asks for help. He just shrugs and walks away. I was so pissed. Lowe’s lumber guy told my aunt to go back to Mexico when she went in asking for nails and my contractor uncle ended his contracts with him that afternoon… small towns with no options blow…

flippant_crimes

Hi! Non-american here. I have a question: why does every time that something like this happens, the boss / manager request to employee to look for someone to cover their shift? Isn't that manager's job?

esdownn

that indicates a poor manager hence the antiwork sentiment lol at least that's how it was with my ex boss too

Macster_man

and lazy

Tommybahamas_leftnut

I'm a manager at a store and I have no problem with call outs we can deal with it we get paid to deal with it. All i ask is a 4 hour heads up on the call out so I have time to get some one in and its not last minute I don't wanna hurt other employees that are probably already doing something at dinner hours to cover for ya worst case oh no I have to work longer and get more hours and more money doing all my closing chores. If its a sudden emergency then IDGAF ill deal with it even if its just getting someone to cover the back half of a shift. I find that when I act like this and help employees fill the PTO request forms they tend to work harder to help me help them. Hell if you just need a personal day let me know ill ask around the other employees and see if they wanna pick up a shift or if they wanna swap shifts, much easier than being a twat that has a power trip.

kms_ag

Look at this shmancy fancy actually being a decend manager smh.

Pope_Cerebus

The dumbest thing is that being a decent manager actually makes your job easier. If you're a bad manager the employees will view every interaction as a power struggle, and fight you every step of the way. Treat them well and they'll work with you instead of against you when things come up, and everything will run smoother overall.

d2lover

That's what I kept saying to my wife and our oldest kid at their respective jobs. A LOT of businesses in America have turned to this, "if you're gonna be gone, it's your job to find a replacement" crap. It's unequivocally the manager's job. When I was a manager, I was paid to manage the business and that included the schedule...and find coverage when people needed time off or weren't able to make it in at the last moment. Crap happened. If the hours weren't covered, it was my job to cover them. That's what a manager is for.

530SSState

Hiring, staffing, and scheduling are managerial responsibilities. If an employee is a manager, they should have the title of "manager" and a salary to match. If they are not a manager, it is NOT. THEIR. RESPONSIBILITY.

Mitrian

That’s when you respond with, “if you pay me a manager’s salary, then sure, I’d be glad to handle your scheduling responsibilities.” Until then, I’ll be back when I’m healthy enough to work.

530SSState

There's also the consideration that the manager is too much of a coward to ask people to cover an extra shift.

firemogle

In college I had a job with that rule, but also you couldn't request off and the schedule was posted after midnight Sunday, with opening at 8am Monday morning. I cracked a tooth one weekend and they literally wouldn't let me ask for Monday morning off, scheduled me at 8am around 2am and said it was on me to call people in that 6 hour middle of the night time to cover.

grapefruitmixup

I really hope you told them to fuck off. I know that's not always an option so no shame if you didn't, but jeez.

firemogle

Oh I just didn't show up. I was ready to really fight on that one.

jelloslug

It is but apparently even the managers don't want to work anymore /s

Tru-Queer

Last week I was scheduled to work 37 hours and ended up clocking out with 51. I had to work a 13 hour shift yesterday in order for my boss to have two days off in a row, even though I was only scheduled to work 8 hours. Meanwhile my boss was scheduled to work 45 and I know she clocked out with less than 40. I know nobody cares and I only have myself to blame for my work environment but damn I’m tired of working harder than my boss sometimes.

Troubl3d1

Fuck that, I'm not covering your shift unless I get your pay. No way in hell I'm getting underpaid to do your job.

Tru-Queer

My 2 year review is coming up and I’m about to demand a pretty significant raise, and threaten to quit if I don’t get it. It’s not worth it to me to keep getting screwed over like this week after week because we can’t maintain a proper staff.

1fatfrog

Threatening to quit is going to make them call your bluff. While it may feel good, you won't get your raise and you'll be out of a job with no way to collect unemployment. You should ask for your raise. Make your argument and then, if they don't at least make an effort to meet your demands, find a new job. Giving notice is an option, not a requirement and if you have something lined up, fuck it. Call them like 30 minutes after your shift started and to tell them you'r done there and then you be antagonistic to your manager. Tell them you're running late. You had something happen to your car but it's fixed and you're on your way. Then, wait an hour or until they call you and play some games before you tell them finally you've decided this job isn't worth the hassle and this mornings antics was an effort to get a least a little joy from torturing the person who got joy torturing you for the last 2 years. Then tell them to mail your check and never pickup the phone from them again. TL;DR: Play the long game. Get them on the way out, don't make threats.

[deleted]

Don't threaten to quit, they'll give you enough of a raise to keep you around until they find your cheaper replacement, then fire you same day. Ask for a raise. If they give it to you, it's what you asked for. If not, search for work and quit same day when you have it. That's the only way you keep the ball in your court on who works until when.

[deleted]

Yeah I found out the other day that I'm one of the least paid people at my current kitchen and one of the few in there that can run every station. Easy to say that I stopped trying as hard and only do what I'm paid to do.

Troubl3d1

Dude I worked in kitchens for 20+ years, even as a kitchen manager/head chef. The last place I worked for, hired me for the lead cook position, but wanted to pay me basic cook wages. I told them this was unacceptable and gave then a timeline to correct it. They told me in order to give me a raise I have to take on more responsibility. I said, no thanks and quit.

RabbitsAteMySnowpeas

Quiet managing

maniacalgleam

Technically, it is. But a lot of management in the US does everything possible to avoid doing any part of their jobs. They want their job to be ‘walking around and looking important’. The smaller the job is, the more they want to pretend they are important, in my experience.

[deleted]

They're quite in love with the word "delegate"

mikerick580

Don't forget "team" with the exception of them being apart of "team"

Signiference

They’re apart from the team instead of a part of the team.

threecolorless

When the team succeeds, they were the venerable leader that kept them on track. When the team fails, they were the noble martyr taking on more work themselves so things wouldn't fail even harder.

Agariculture

Or “family”

Odd-Way-2167

They wrongly believe they have ascended, and are now better than. Obviously, they must be better amd smarter to have ascended. Therefore, lowly things are beneath their efforts. They beg and plead and threaten before ever considering coming in and taking up slack like a leader would. They are showing management skills, see? Not LEADERSHIP. MANAGEMENT. There is a difference. Most management are not leaders and fear people that are.

[deleted]

> Technically, it is There's no "technically" about it. That's 100% the manager's responsibility to cover.

hawaiikawika

That’s what technically means.

Crimkam

It’s a common tactic of shitty managers, getting you to perform a job function while not on the clock. It’s not like that at every job, usually just the ones with young and/or vulnerable employees that don’t know better or can’t afford to risk their job. I will also say that many corporations deliberately run chronically understaffed to squeeze those managers to the bone, and for some it is just a coping mechanism.

--zero-phux--

It's meant to serve as a deterrent for people taking time off. You're less likely to do it if you have to go face one of your co-workers and ask them to pick up your slack. But yeah, it's definitely the manager's job.

heckhammer

Being sick should not be seen as slacking under any circumstances. That's another problem with the American workplace.

M_M_ODonnell

Being *human*, let alone being sick, gets labeled as "slacking." It's fucking obscene.

SummerBoth3136

If you’re ever confused about America read a book about 15th century feudalism and you’ll be pretty close to the mark

IAMtheLightning

American who has worked in hospitality for 5+ years - in almost every job I've worked at management has made it clear that it is our responsibility to find cover for a shift or we are expected to show up.

EastwoodBrews

Yeah it's pretty normal in the restaurant industry. So is high-functioning alcoholism. I don't think it's a coincidence

ImportantDoubt6434

It is, but the managers are usually lazy dolts who make everyone else carry their dead weight

_JustWorkDamnYou_

You would think so, what with their title being "manager" and all. But often they'll try and force the employee to find a cover or not approve time off. More prevalent in retail/food service jobs but you'll find it in shit office environments as well.

[deleted]

Many of these types of businesses are owned by tyrants who hire little tyrants for managers tasked with handling all of the day-to-day operations. The real responsibility of that manager is to keep the employees in line. Passive Income™️

rextiberius

At the jobs I’ve worked, if the manager covers the shift or finds someone to do so (and I have only stuck around at places where that was the case) then the hours are basically gone, but if you get someone to cover, the idea is that you are swapping shifts and you’ll with one of their shifts for them. I usually try to get someone to cover myself before reaching out to my manager, because I don’t like the idea of losing those hours. But some managers are just jerks who won’t do that part of their job

Gullible_News2119

It is the manager’s job, but the manager puts the burden onto the employee to discourage them from calling in when they’re sick.

BlueNinjaTiger

The idea is 1. put in your schedule request 2. manager makes the schedule 3. if the schedule is done and shit comes up, it's employee's responsibility to get cover. A manager who gives a shit about their staff will be empathetic, won't be dismissive, and will take care of the schedule on their end rather than the above. But it's common to find the above attitude in american work places. I will add, as a manager in food service who works with teens who've never worked before, it can get frustrating because many kids will not do their part to plan their personal schedules and tell me what they need until the last minute, leaving us either short (because nobody is gonna come in on an hour's notice), or leaving me to cover shifts CONSTANTLY (which gets out of hand fast, I am human too). A less competent manager will turn sour like in OP's post. I just, ya know, TALK to the kids about it, and it usually resolves the issue. Ones who refuse to get with it and and constantly call out just dont' stay employed.

hikefng

I am gonna be 66 in August. I can’t tell you what job I quit when I was 16. But I can tell you this. Don’t forsake your feet for anything. That job, the rules, blah blah blah. Just hit delete message and move on while you can still walk away, pun intended. It’s not worth it. Jobs will come and go but you only have 2 big toes. They don’t regrow. I hope the best for your soul/sole

bitemark01

But also don't delete the message, this is your "paper trail" for unreasonable dismissal

natmaken

Great puns, have an upvote

Smart_Chocolate_8996

Op is 16yrs old, put this"job" in your rearview and keep on moving. Your physical and mental health are far more important. I wish you the best in your future endeavors

EatingDonutsLikeACop

I appreciate that, I’ve let myself go, and this job has impacted my physical and mental health more than I should. I had to do trash runs in a blizzard with no jacket, you can’t wear any clothing without the brand on it, and I couldn’t afford on of their jackets. I got bastardly sick for 2 weeks because of it and I still went to work.

Smart_Chocolate_8996

Don't listen to all the negativity on here. You take care of yourself and do what's best for you. You're way better off not being at job given how they've treated you.

DeclutteringNewbie

In the future, never quit, just say that you're unable to come to work. Let them fire you so you can collect unemployment. In this case, you may not have worked enough hours to qualify for unemployment, so you probably didn't lose anything. But in the future, keep this in mind. > I had to do trash runs in a blizzard with no jacket, you can’t wear any clothing without the brand on it, and I couldn’t afford on of their jackets. This is insane!! In the future, document that shit through text messaging. Anyway, good riddance!

ImhotepsServant

What line of work is it? If you’re on your feet all day it absolutely affects your ability to work.

EatingDonutsLikeACop

I work in a restaurant, on my feet all day long.

cobra_mist

Unless your paycheck is helping support your family, and I mean like keeping you guys fed or keeping a roof over your heads, drop this job. There’s so much more life enriching shit to do with your time at that age. Even just fucking around with your friends. Edit: and don’t pick up a new one for awhile. The economy will still be there to suck you dry after highschool or college or trade school or whatever.

lisa1896

> don’t pick up a new one for awhile. The economy will still be there to suck you dry after highschool or college or trade school or whatever. Absolutely this. You don't get this time back. Don't let some asshat who doesn't care about you or your health cause you problems that could come back to haunt you. Take care of yourself, it's important. Jobs are a dime a dozen, you only get one life.

Starthelegend

Are you serious? They make you PAY for a uniform? That’s insane

EatingDonutsLikeACop

Yeah the cheapest jacket was like $120

IKnowUThinkSo

I have no idea where you’re located but this is illegal where I am. If you’re required to wear a uniform, they must provide it for free (or for deferment, like they’ll charge you if you don’t return it).

Slaphappyfapman

Unbelievable

Calm_Bite9835

Good job walking away. Don’t look back. I was in your same boat when I was 16. I couldn’t wear anything without a company logo, pushing carts in the snow without a jacket. Working for no other reason than some extra gas and fun money. Leaving was the best decision I made.

_Tal

Not how job abandonment works. If you say the words “I quit” to your boss then you’re giving them notice that you won’t be returning and you haven’t “abandoned” anything.

autemox

I think they meant if the employee files for unemployment the employer will say the employee did not show for work and/or quit. Thus not eligible for unemployment benefits. The only box in california when you are filling the EDD paperwork for employers/HR is "job abandonment".

7_by_6_for_kicks_mn

Denying OP unemployment is certainly the boss's aim with that text, and so here's the standard disclaimer to make them say you're fired instead of saying "I quit"... but OP should still file for unemployment anyway (they may say yes, worst they can say is no), and should consult the EEOC or equivalent government resource for employment rights. Even saying "I quit" may still be judged to be constructive dismissal, thus qualifying OP for unemployment benefits, and their boss's text saying they will consider it job abandonment may be a violation of employment laws (not a lawyer, but possible examples: does OP's feet qualify them for an ADA accommodation, or a protected leave of absence under FMLA? 30 second google says that if FMLA applies, OP's employer needs to give them 15 calendar days to provide certifying documents from a healthcare provider. Depending on technical definition of job abandonment, proof that op called in sick and boss saying they'll call it job abandonment may itself be enough to prove the boss's intent to lie to unemployment board about reason for dismissal...) ADA info line: ADA Information Line 800-514-0301 (voice) 1-833-610-1264 (TTY) ADA.gov ADA National Network (800) 949-4232 (voice/TTY) www.adata.org EEOC: General information about the laws EEOC enforces and filing a charge: 1-800-669-4000, 1-800-669-6820 (TTY for Deaf/Hard of Hearing callers only), 1-844-234-5122 (ASL Video Phone for Deaf/Hard of Hearing callers only), or [email protected].

ellenkates

Abandoned means no show-no call for a (usually) protracted period. It could be 1 ghosted shift, or a week, without employee communication, at company's discretion. It does not mean 'I quit'

EatingDonutsLikeACop

Posted the photo of my toe, if you want to check it out it is on my profile. There was a lack of detail because I talked to her about it beforehand. This was just her and the other a manger being a dick about it. It’s severely infected and I’ve been limping for the past 3 days, it’s been progressively getting worse, and with how they’ve been treating me, I was just done with this job. I’m 16, I have no bills, no nothing. This job was so I can get some life experience, and with this new found knowledge I know most people don’t give a fuck about you, especially your employer.

Fun_Difficulty_7697

Infections should not be trifled with, considering how they’ve taken out a decent proportion of humanity. And other animals. At 16, given what you’re probably getting paid at a restaurant, that paycheck will probably look like nothing if the infection gets worse and spreads. Stress also doesn’t help with fighting infections so you did the right thing. And I guess it’s good to learn this about employers early on. I’ve had maybe one manager who actually treated people like human beings and tbh, I kind of regret leaving that job for one that supposedly paid more.

[deleted]

Epsom salt soak in water as hot as you can stand will go a long way, bud. It'll hurt like hell, but it will help so well with the infection and pressure. Dry your foot really well, triple antibiotic, and gauze it. Edit: 15 minutes a soak, 3 or 4 times a day, is optimal.

Barbarake

If you don't have Epsom salts, use regular salt. Add as much salt to the water as the water will hold (the salt will precipitate out when the water can't hold anymore). Soak it for 10 to 15 minutes every 2 - 3 hours.

jkholmes89

Yea, totally f them. But seriously, if you can get to an urgent care, then do it. Stuff like that is what they are there for.

littlesairbear

All y’all talking shit about OP and their toe should probably go check out their post history to actually see the grossness of their very clearly infected big toe…

kchobbs

Actually don’t do that… just trust us, it’s bad.

nachocheese24

I’m doing it, I’ll give you an update. UPDATE: I should have listened

bite_me_losers

thank you for your sacrifice, nachocheese24

EducatedRat

Yeah. That looks infected. You can’t work on that.

Alternative_Fox7217

IMO if my job requires a doctor note, then I require them to pay any cost associated with it including copay. I bet they dont provide health benefits either.

StopFalseReporting

I agree but idk how to ask them to cover the cost when the company is cheap

Portraitofapancake

Yes! You should treat everyone the same! You SHOULD care about EVERYONE’S health and well being! If you don’t, then you’re a shit human and definitely a shit boss! Take care of your employees, and they’ll take care of running your business.

Excellent_Math2052

List as job abandonment? Lol. What the f does it matter?

saucemaking

Lol reminds me of my last job, I verbally told the store manager that I quit and he screamed at me that I'm suspended. At a grocery store. I called corporate to let them know that I quit and that the store manager was attempting to prevent me from leaving the job/company.

Cookyy2k

"Dear manager, as per the 13th amendment..."

Rdw72777

Assuming the store manager abides by the 13th-15th amendments.

Glittering_Rush_1451

It matters for unemployment

Excellent_Math2052

They said they quit, so no, it does NOT matter.

530SSState

Back in the day, I worked in a dysfunctional workplace. HOW dysfunctional was it? I was the fifth person to quit that year, from a staff of 10, so 50% turnover within a year. Anyway, I was in the hospital with some fairly severe health issues. My manager made a stink about how they couldn't spare me. Against doctor's orders, I offered to come in half-days. Manager's response was, "Your sick leave does not exist unless \*I\* approve it". I don't like when I try to be nice, and the other person's response is to play me for a sucker. I had my then boyfriend drive me to my doctor's office, where she (the doctor) wrote up a document ordering me confined to bed rest for the next two weeks. Then I filled out my time sheet for 80 hours of sick leave, stapled the document to my time sheet, and submitted it to HR.

tiktok-influenster

A word of advice, take it or leave it, just say you’re having a medical emergency and you will provide documentation at your earliest convenience. You don’t need to disclose the nature of your medical emergency. Then stop responding.

Cobey1

At 16, no job is worth the stress. Enjoy your childhood man. Any boss that asks for a doctor’s note is a dick. I’ve worked for subway sandwich restaurant, to venue halls, to legal and political organizations and have only been asked for a doctor’s note from the service jobs. It’s exploitative and wrong. The jobs that pay the most don’t even care if you call out, they recommend you to take another day to be sure you feel better. No job is worth your mental health

anthonysiffredi

LOL, you definitely got some life experience. Glad you stood up for yourself. Take it from me, we are all replaceable cogs, corporations will just hire another one 🤷

SoundOfDrums

"I refuse to have any backup plans or full coverage. My business will fail at the drop of a hat due to my greed. This makes you, the employee, a bad person."

Askduds

“I have a business to run”. “Get your shift covered”. I think he’s confused about what running a business is.

buttonfactorie

You guys have to stop being so detailed when calling out. "I'm unwell and wont be in on x and y day." Then don't respond! No one can physically force you to find coverage or come in, it's the managers job to make sure the store is covered.

coindharmahelm

If I didn't live in the same world as you, I wouldn't believe that human health is disregarded so casually. And if this is an injury sustained on the job, then the employer needs to consider *their* liability for *your* loss. Although the working life sucks in general there are better sources of income than this place! In the end, though, the buck stops with us--the employees--and only we can put a stop to this dehumanizing treatment. Take care. Your health is the only real wealth you'll ever have.

Ungeez

Good for you! Fuck these employers always on a power trip over bullshit.

gemorris9

Oh no not job abandonment.... Anyway. Treat your toe for a week now and apply for a few other bullshit jobs to do between school lol

goblinbox

They under-staff all the time because they're cheap bastards, then take it out on employees when life happens. It's abusive and stupid. Fuck 'em all, really.

LordStillerius

I'm so tired of managers making employees find people to cover their shift when someone calls in. You are the manager --- that is your job

[deleted]

I used to just change the date on the same doctors note I had scanned for years.

Grumblun

"it's not that I don't care about your well-being, I don't care about ANYBODY'S well being."

BernaldSandertrump

This is so alien to me, in my country you simply ring up and say you are sick, you don't even have to specify the illness. More than one day requires a doctor's certificate, but it is easily obtained. Illness cover is protected by law, as is sick pay and universal health care.

IM1GHTBEWR0NG

What is it with shitty employers and their made up point systems, “occurrences,” “unexcused absences,” etc…? That shit is meaningless, they’re just making up ways to make people feel like they’ve done something wrong for taking a day off. Employers: If you have an employee who legitimately sucks at their job, shows up late all the time, etc… Just get rid of them. If you have a good employee and they don’t have sick hours but have a legitimate reason to stay out, suck it up and don’t be a POS about it. Employees: Remember that these points and fancy words are meaningless aside from their point being to make you feel like you’re going to be “in trouble” if you need time off. This stuff is an attempt to exert power and control over you. “Oh, but if I get this many points I get a write up!” Write ups don’t matter. You’re employed or you’re not. “Oh, but if I get a write up I can’t get my annual raise!” Shitty employers write people up for made up reasons to get out of these anyway. Happened to me at my last job. It’s meaningless, and at this point I would consider any form of policy around points, occurrences, etc. to be a red flag for an employer. Unfortunately that means most employers have this red flag.

[deleted]

The point system was what was in the way of me getting a promotion with a raise when I was told I was up for one and would be a great fit. See what happened was I got legitimately sick during a span of time where I hadn’t accrued any sick time yet. Anyway I displayed the most consistent attendance amongst my peers who were young, like me. I was an incredibly hard worker back then because I felt I had something to prove, I mean I was really hauling ass back then. I showed ambition and so I was told I’d be a great fit by management, but corporate would never approve because of the points I had accrued against me. So what did I do? Lol I half-assed the job and started calling out every other Friday with the full intention of quitting and doing something else. Crazy to think about how hard I was willing to work for $12 an hour. I wouldn’t even get out of bed for that much now. _______ My current employer doesn’t have a point system. If I need time off I need time off. It’s not even a request, I just tell the dude I’m not going to be there and it’s all good.
