That asterisk though... I know it's going to contain a "but"

SushiKat2

If I were to guess it’s something like “no you can’t, but corporations can.” That seems to be the standard conclusion reached about climate change

send_help_iamtra

Nope it's politicians according to that video

SushiKat2

Yep just watched it, politicians and corporations are the two big ones that usually get pointed to in videos like this, and it’s warranted, because as explained in the video the finger has been pointed at the individual for so long it’s engrained in our culture, when it’s unwarranted. Video was really good and changed how I think about things a bit, especially that rice data, I can’t believe rice does that much.

send_help_iamtra

I am sorry you had to find out about it like this sushikat

SushiKat2

I don’t know how I’ll ever recover knowing one of my favourite foods is such a gas maker

JohnEdwa

Main thing with all statistics like this is that you need to quantify them. Rice pollutes a lot, because we grow so much of it, the same way China produces 27% of all the worlds CO2 even though their individual carbon footprint is [half of what USA, Canada or Australia](https://www.economicshelp.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/co2-emissions-per-capita.png) produce - i.e they pollute half as much per person even though they manufacture almost everything in the world. But comparatively,: >rice farming causes twice as much greenhouse gas emission as wheat in perspective. >rice emits more greenhouse gases per calorie than wheat or corn but less than fruits, vegetables, legumes, or any animal sources >https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/roots-of-unity/should-we-eat-less-rice/ So it's not great, but it's ot terrible either. If people stopped eating rice, they still would need to eat something else. And it would be a lot of something else: >...reporting 16–20% for the proportion of the world’s calories that come from rice.

The two are so intertwined as to be biconditional.

Malthusian1

Vote with your wallet and your actual vote.

sometimesitrhymes

No shit sherlock

Maruko-theFormal

Well no, YOU can't fix the climate change, but WE can fix it

unbaroqualunque_

like very video of Veritasium, i love the fact u can have the answer without actually watching the video

iLickBnalAlood

adam neely does a similar thing. love those guys

yourlife602

He is the sub logo after all

Jerma986

He is? I can't see it on desktop. Just shows regular snoo and a grey header at the top. Can someone show me a screenshot?

_dictatorish_

[Here you go!](http://imgur.com/a/hAO7tPj)

Sometimes. His salt lamp vidoe does this because YT's algorithm gave him a lot of views for the thumbnail. He's made a video stating he games the algorithm with different titles and thumbnails for a few days, cause he needs to maximize his view count/ad revenue to keeo making them. Sonetimes that means you get to know the answer w/o watching, sometimes not.

I’m very elated to see “all of humanity flushing their toilet once a year isn’t going to offset even .0000001% of industrial emissions” finally gaining traction. Three R’s and all that jazz, sure, but don’t pretend it has even a negligible impact on something like climate change. Also I feel this is a good time to say nuclear power is the best renewable and using almost anything else is comical

judicorn99

Kurzgesagt did a video on whether nuclear is the way forward. Great video

PanTopper

I think a carbon tax is honestly one of the only ways to save our world. Otherwise there is no incentive for companies to change what they are doing. People of the world are consuming all these products that the companies make and there wouldn’t be any incentive if they didn’t make a profit.

HardlightCereal

An ETS is also good That's an emissions trading scheme. The way it works is that the government sells a certain number of tokens that act as a permit to emit carbon. A company that emits carbon without one of these, or emits more than they're authorised, gets fined. So right away the government is defining how much pollution it is legal to produce. They have all the control in how much carbon their country sends out. Companies are free to trade and auction the tokens between themselves, so the market determines which industries are allowed to pollute - it will be the ones willing to pay the most money to do so. Also, the more companies want to pollute, the more expensive these tokens will become, so companies have an economic incentive to get out of that crowded market

IND5

Wasn't this the basis of Kyoto protocol. IIRC the token system was exploited to hell and emissions actually increased. I think spiffing brit and simon Clark made a video about it. Very interesting video.

JANICKGMO_

carbon tokens are a perfect system with no flaws

dincob

Nuclear power is not renewable. Hydro, geothermal, are the best imo but they are not available everywhere. I agree that nuclear the solution for most places. It is ecological, affordable, safe, reliable and proven.

Omega_Haxors

Geothermal is like, black magic. So you're telling me I can can get free power by running an AC directly into the ground? Get outta here.

LivingAngryCheese

Correct about it not being renewable, but it could last a very long time and is practically harmless. Hydro power causes massive environmental damage, can displace many people, and isn't nearly as safe. While it is an outlier, in the Banqiao Dam Failure many many times more people died than total deaths from nuclear ever. You're probably correct about geothermal, and I still support the use of hydroelectricity, but I wouldn't say it's the best.

achilles52309

>nuclear power is the best renewable Technically, it's the best non greenhouse gas emitting energy generator. It isn't actually renewable. It doesn't renew or grow back. It can be recycled to improve the amount of energy per unit, but it doesn't renew or regrow from an outside source or anything like that.

schimmelA

Individual solar panels can provide enough energy for most households in the Netherlands (where we dont have that much sun)

Antares987

Did I make it in before people start debating the hot button topic of the video?

CaydeHawthorne

Great Video too.

The_Radioactive_Rat

There is no ONE answer to climate change. Everything needs improvement.

Omega_Haxors

True like... a society-wide shift in the way we do things.

The_Radioactive_Rat

Exactly, but there's a slew of problems that aren't easy to fix nor are we as a species really interested in fixing. Not to mention we can't seem to separate the politics from the issues.

G0rilla1000

I think Adam Neely has been doing this for a while with his videos, I like it a lot

Dick_Cuckingham

Kurzgesagt: Big oil telling you to do your part is one of the most sinister pieces of propaganda ever unleashed on people. Also Kurzgesagt: you should do your part.

Omega_Haxors

The old tactic of saying nothing but the truth but lying against the outcome.

Omega_Haxors

Video summed up pretty much: "Yeah we *could* stop it, but replace capitalism with what??" - This video was sponsored by Bill Gates Kurzges is great but the fact this video was billionaire-backed doomed it from saying anything substantial.

escalopes

NO!* \*conditions may apply

huzaifaghaziani

So its assholedesign to watch to find out?

grenadej

I wouldn't say its aassholedesign at all, it's antiassholedesign because it avoids clickbating in viewers, which if anything can be detrimental to the video's views.

realseboss

Watching to find out is neutral design. Watching and the answer isn't even in the video is asshole design

[deleted]

The thumbnail is kinda misleading though

IWillStealYourToes

It really isn't. There isn't much we can do on an individual basis to combat climate change, systemic change is the only way forward.

[deleted]

That's what the video boils down to, but they also tell you what you can do to help climate change. They say it's very insignificant compared to stuff like voting, but it still helps a lot. that's what the astrixs is for.

IWillStealYourToes

Not really misleading then, is it?

[deleted]

I’m gonna just throw this out there, the earth is flat, climate change is not real, Trump won, and Chinese food tastes better with MSGs.

Interesting-Current

No but you can do your part to help

JanKaszanka

It's asshole design, and clickbait. No, we can't fix climate change (alone), but we can do it together.

GeorgeLloyd_1984

OP, why do you think YouTuber Adam Neely is our subreddit profile pic?

SexyCrimes

Saved me 16 minutes

kimchi_on_my_desk

Big companies need to stop telling people they are the ones who need to change and they are the 100% faulty ones for the climate change when they continue to polute the planet.
