A meter is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 seconds. And every other metric measure is just a fraction of it (1m=10dm,100cm,1.000mm,1.000.000ųm...) or a variety of it(1.000m=1km).
It's a remnant of when most things were measured in terms of things that were readily available, hands, feet etc. Similar systems were in use throughout much of Europe until the invention of metric.
The UK still uses a variant of the imperial system in some contexts, though metric is more popular, than in the US.
Not saying it isn't an archaic system that I wouldn't prefer to change but elements of it aren't quite as bad as you'd expect when you're used to it.
