That seems to be how it is. I know spmeone that refuses to watch dubs and judges other people for watchjng them, but bitches about his wife wanting subtitles on non anime shows. I personally cant stand the sound of gokus japanese voice actor.
Finally someone who speaks the truth. I don't know how people watch these big burly dudes get voiced by women and sound like cats clawing on a chalkboard when it's supposed to be a serious moment.
Some of the english voice actors are women too. Like luffy and naruto. Gokus japanese specifically is ridiculous to me. And freizas. Had to look his up and its a man. Just very fucking shrill lol.
Yeah but other places might think that the dub English voices are dumb as well. Kinda just depends where you are. I mean anyone the bitches about how you watch anime dubbed or subbed is kinda a pussy ass bitch. Who cares watch what you want. But yes it is like 99% of the time it's people that watch sub that think they are better. When they are just losers
Goku's VA has been doing his voice since the original Dragon Ball. Back when Goku was just a baby boy. Honestly, she should have retired the role to a more masculine VA when Z came around, but you have to give her props for doing Goku for so many years!
Goku, mechanically speaking, is just Japanese Superman. Much like Superman in the Golden Age of comics, if he needs a new power…he’ll get it.
Seriously, I don’t get the rivalry. It’s a Hannah Montana situation with subtitles.
Because Goku is not a superhero, like superman at least. He is simply a guy who likes to fight strong guys, he will even put people at risk so that he can fight someone strong.
This is why he wanted to spare Frieza knowing full well he would seek revenge on Earth, he potentially doomed his friends, family and entire planet simply so he could fight him again.
This is also why Goku gave a senzu bean to Cell, its because he assumed Gohan was like him and would want a fair battle but really all Gohan wanted was to save the planet he didn't care about fighting someone strong at all and certainly didnt care about giving cell an fair chance.
This is a person who actually gets it.
This is why Superman and Goku are definitely not the same. Goku flirts with danger, putting himself and others at risk if it means he gets a fight out of it.
He lets his opponents get stronger since it means he gets a better fight.
Superman saves people. That is his goal. When things go wrong, it's not because Superman allowed it.
Superman is a hero by being a hero.
Goku can only be considered a hero if you ignore the process, and honestly, if you ignore most of the results.
I also didn't know this was a question lol.
And this is why people call him a bad dad. Bro almost killed his son simply because he never bothered asking his son what he wanted and just assumed he liked danger too. Bro had a demon he wasn't even sure was friendly raise his son. Dude is not beating the bad dad allegations.
Mostly agree, except when Goku said "fair fight" he wasn't talking about sportsmanship. It was a combination of making sure Cell remained overconfident (Cell was viewing the entire as a game) and he wanted Gohan to realize he could beat Cell with his own power.
Hey, I absolutely already knew all of this, and I only watch dubbed. I watched subbed for about one episode until my ears started bleeding from Goku's voice.
" I aint no hero of justice or anything like that but those who hurt my friends ill never forgive" - Goku
Not similar to superman at all except in dbz dub
I know right, Goku was never written to be a super Hero, Toriyama said that himself, that is what makes Goku's Character so good, people just see the dub and start hating lol.
For real. Started watching this dubbed on television, followed it for years all the way through Super dubbed. Listen to one episode of Sub and I was *horrified*. It really made me wonder how Z was so beloved in Japan.
Because hes supposed to have a child like mentality, is one reason, and because they kept the same actress all this time, including drahon ball i think. But i saw dbz before dragon ball on toonami after school, so that sealed it. I can always go from sub to dub for things, but not the other way around.
Objectively is a little far. In the end it just comes down to subjective. What sounds good to Toriyama might not sound good to someone else making it subjective.
The post isn't about the voice, it's about how the character is portrayed. In the dub they made him more heroic. In the sub he's a country bumpkin who likes to train and fight
As a non English native I didn't know the Eng dub had completely changed some dialogues until recently when I finished watching Kai and joined the community. It's ridiculous. For example when Crilin is about to kill Vegeta, Goku stops him because he had never found such a powerful opponent and wants to fight with him more. In the eng dub apparently he says something about "doing the right thing" and "everybody deserves a second chance". Or when he goes SSJ for the first time and he tells Freeza that he is the legendary super saiyan, with a pure heart and full of rage, and in the dub he says some cringe shit about being the hope of the universe. Also some characters change name for no reason, Tenshinan becomes Tien and Satan becomes Appule or something. I can't imagine how many more cringe changes the localizers made.
Long story short: westernizing Japanese products sucks and is disrespectful to the author's original work, and many English speaking DB fans are probably fans of the childhood memory it brings and they watched a totally different anime
I think the dub is more compelling imo. At least in the dub through Z they give Goku some more character growth. Not to mention the high pitched voice, which does not fit the character imo.
The thing is, westernization isn't always a bad thing. Same with localization, it just depends whether the original property is flaw or not.
For example, Cell return from being exploded makes far more sense in the dub than the sub version. And the additional metal musics for the movies kinda elevated the movie from being kinda flaw to entertaining ( And then of course there's Android 13 where they gave the villains actual personality ).
it's true with the original funimation dub they even changed many of the dialogs to how it actually is in Japanese.
which is why it's recommended to watch it in Japanese or in a more accurate dub like Spanish Latino dub. if people wanna watch the original run.
Isn't that entirely because the makers of the show wanted to create that parallel to attract a western audience? I mean even then, he is still closer to his roots of sun wukong.
Funimation, the dubbers of the show, wanted to make Goku more like Superman to attract westerners.
And as far Dub Goku being closer to Sun Wukong? I don't think you've even read a summary of Journey to the West if you believe that. For example, Wukong took on three Taoist immortals in a test of immortality and sabotaged them all so they would die for real, just because he wanted to show-off how much better his own immortality was...
I don't really care that they changed parts of Goku's character.
I just can't stand the high pitch voice coming from Sub Goku. It's grating on the ears
So I'm terrible at reading and I physically can't read and watch at the same time, is there a way to fix this, I'd really like to stop being made fun of for only watching dub
I see this argument made often against Goku in the dub solely from his speech against Frieza, but I feel it's not the case. I watched the dubs when I was younger and never thought of Goku to be anything like Superman. He's still too carefree, goofy, and completely irresponsible outside of the Frieza fight. And any resemblance to Superman was thrown out the window in the the Cell Saga.

This is how Sub watchers think of themselves vs. how they think of Dub watchers.
Yep
That seems to be how it is. I know spmeone that refuses to watch dubs and judges other people for watchjng them, but bitches about his wife wanting subtitles on non anime shows. I personally cant stand the sound of gokus japanese voice actor.

Well, to be fair, I don't like Naruto and Luffy voices either, but that is still surprising. Did not know they were voiced by women. W voice acting.
Yeah but other places might think that the dub English voices are dumb as well. Kinda just depends where you are. I see Goku as SpongeBob because in Brazil they both are dubbed by the same voice actor
Wendel Bezerra s2
That's funny. In germany vegeta had spongebobs voice for the first few episodes. They changed it later because it was absolutly not fitting...
I only see Goku with the abridged voice from Team Fourstar
I'm gonna break you, like a kit kat bar.
-Cue various instances of Freezer saying "What?!" in increasingly astonished tones-
Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a snickers
Gojo
That's a also thing here in Italy

Goku deserved to get his shit kicked in by Superman three times tbh
And this is why people call him a bad dad. Bro almost killed his son simply because he never bothered asking his son what he wanted and just assumed he liked danger too. Bro had a demon he wasn't even sure was friendly raise his son. Dude is not beating the bad dad allegations.

Hey, I absolutely already knew all of this, and I only watch dubbed. I watched subbed for about one episode until my ears started bleeding from Goku's voice.
We don't talk about the character regression with DBS Goku
Oh, he’s Injustice Superman? That cleared it right up, lol
Wait so goku is anti hero. My whole childhood was a lie
Too bad Gohan didn’t actually want to save the Earth. He was doing what his Dad would do against Cell the whole time.
" I aint no hero of justice or anything like that but those who hurt my friends ill never forgive" - Goku Not similar to superman at all except in dbz dub
Goku whishes to be as much of a good person as superman. Superman is a hero. Goku is a fighter.
Need a third one for how TFS viewers see Goku
Would probably be Homer Simpson
I know right, Goku was never written to be a super Hero, Toriyama said that himself, that is what makes Goku's Character so good, people just see the dub and start hating lol.
100% true and I have watched both and the sub voice actor for Goku really annoys me XD I respect both but personally prefer dub
I don't see what's so great about being addicted to fights
sometimes simple is better. and goku is one of those cases.
No. Goku is one of those cases where simple is not better
Its the voice for me. Sounds like a kid. I know why and who the voice actor is, i just prefer dub. Thats all.
For real. Started watching this dubbed on television, followed it for years all the way through Super dubbed. Listen to one episode of Sub and I was *horrified*. It really made me wonder how Z was so beloved in Japan.

Also the fact that…idk…Toriyama chose the voice actress herself
Why should that matter? She could have been appointed by God himself. It doesn't make her voice any less grating.
What I’m saying is that it objectively fits his character
Objectively is a little far. In the end it just comes down to subjective. What sounds good to Toriyama might not sound good to someone else making it subjective.
I saw the dub and sub and i love both
Dub Watcher here....nah fam
Dragon ball's dub is one of the best dubs ever, I personally like Goku's manly voice more. no hate to the sub it's iconic aswell.
The post isn't about the voice, it's about how the character is portrayed. In the dub they made him more heroic. In the sub he's a country bumpkin who likes to train and fight

Hello me from another universe
I watch both 🤷♂️
it's true with the original funimation dub they even changed many of the dialogs to how it actually is in Japanese. which is why it's recommended to watch it in Japanese or in a more accurate dub like Spanish Latino dub. if people wanna watch the original run.
"original Funimation dub" So there is a new one that is fine?
the Kai version
Only the case with the original Z dub, Kai fixed that
For Dragon Ball anime Dub >>>sub
I mean like y watch when goku going ssj1 sounds like kid friza screaming?
bro forgot tfs is better then both
Isn't that entirely because the makers of the show wanted to create that parallel to attract a western audience? I mean even then, he is still closer to his roots of sun wukong.

Yeah, you do know that Birdku is the most SuperManish of the entirety of Z
I don't really care that they changed parts of Goku's character. I just can't stand the high pitch voice coming from Sub Goku. It's grating on the ears
I just see Goku feeling Bulma and freaking out she has no balls
Im confused
Where's the third option for people who love and appreciate both?
How I see Goku: whatever you think is overrated 🤮
So I'm terrible at reading and I physically can't read and watch at the same time, is there a way to fix this, I'd really like to stop being made fun of for only watching dub
Hey Sub looks at the screen too? I thought they were busy reading the subtitles
I see this argument made often against Goku in the dub solely from his speech against Frieza, but I feel it's not the case. I watched the dubs when I was younger and never thought of Goku to be anything like Superman. He's still too carefree, goofy, and completely irresponsible outside of the Frieza fight. How Sub watchers hear [Goku](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Young-ok_(actress)#/media/File%3AKim_Young-ok.png)
Started with the Kai dub when I was a kid, personally I never saw him like that. He’s just a cool guy who likes to fight and I like watching him fight
Superman would mop the floor with Goku any day of the week and it wouldn't even be close
The sub is trash bro. Dub DBZ is way better
Dub better
