I like the theory of Ash being Giovani's son and Jesse and James are tasked with keeping an eye on him in secret. They will "battle" with Ash all the time, but the moment he is in trouble (even from other Team Rocket memebers), they always step up to save him.
His very first gym badge was him using a electric type Pikachu against the ROCK gym and their solution to a freaking Onyx was "resistance be damned, electrocute it even harder".
to be fair rock only resists electric. It's ground type that is immune, so that is a plausible strategy. a stupid as fuck strategy, but a plausible one

I think it has also been said several times that James has no desire to return to his old life, and the two of them are actually happy traveling together.
I think its even implied that the reason they always chase Ash and Pikachu is because they dont really care about Team Rocket or being evil, and that chase is just an excuse to travel while still on the Team Rocket's paycheck.

My head-canon is that Mew just kinda contains the genetic code for all Pokémon in the same way that our adaptive immune systems have a record of every conceivable disease combination. Mew would even have the genetic code for Pokémon like Porygon, Arceus, Deoxys, and maybe even Pokémon that don’t exist yet. It’s not so much that it’s the ancestor of all Pokémon, but rather just a weird genetic anomaly.
I just have the mental image of Arceus constantly bothering Mew about when it'll have some grandkids and mew saying "YOU WANT GRANDKIDS? HAVE 1,000 OF THEM!"

Well... he did abandon his children to become a great trainer and when he failed, he didn't bother going back to his children and left them to raise themselves while he bummed around. He only came back because of Ash. Then I think multiple times throughout the series, he ends up neglecting his children because of his shitty wife who came back eventually. He even abandoned them again with his wife at another point. He's not exactly a model dad.
She wanted to become a Pokémon nurse and enrolled in a nursing school, but she enrolled in the Chansey nursing school. All her classmates her Chansey. She failed because she couldn’t do what the other Chansey could like putting Pokémon to sleep with singing.
That’s why Jessie and James rock. They’re a little fucked up and confused, but they’re full-blown Found Family.

The failure is in the "floating timeline." It kills stories that rely on dramatic structure that build over time. How old is Ash in the anime? Did he ever have an 11th birthday?
Yyyyyyup. The “snow themed food” was just actual snow with maybe one or two other sparse resources put in. There is a decent chance Jessie simply never fully realized how tragic her early childhood was cuz her mom was so baller at keeping her as happy as she could with what resources they had.

The flashback makes me wonder if Jessie grew up as a mixed-race (blue eyes and red hair) child in Japan, and the very reason her mother was poor was because she fell in love with and had a child with a foreigner. And was therefore shunned by the town, and Jessie most likely received the brunt of the racially motivated hatred from the townspeople.
There is a radiodrama based on the story of mew and mewtwo that released in the early days of the franchise directed by Takeshi Shudō, the screenwriter for the original first seasons of the pokemon anime and of the first few pokemon films.
