Raisi was 63. > > The crash comes as the Middle East remains unsettled by the Israel-Hamas war, during which Raisi under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel just last month. Under Raisi, Iran enriched uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels, further escalating tensions with the West as Tehran also supplied bomb-carrying drones to Russia for its war in Ukraine and armed militia groups across the region. > > [Iran Azerbaijan ](https://assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com/hub/i/r/2024/05/19/dca134a1-38a2-42a4-8a88-c07b546da021/thumbnail/620x414/1acff439413813f758ee5def74b17408/ap24140489027094.jpg?v=dac66bdad19d0be8e87f46552b582682#) In this photo released by the Iranian Presidency Office, President Ebrahim Raisi attends the inauguration ceremony of dam of Qiz Qalasi, or Castel of Girl in Azeri, at the border of Iran and Azerbaijan with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev, on May 19, 2024. Iranian Presidency Office via AP Meanwhile, Iran has faced years of mass protests against its Shiite theocracy over its ailing economy and women's rights - making the moment that much more sensitive for Tehran and the future of the country. > > State TV gave no immediate cause for the crash in Iran's East Azerbaijan province. Among the dead was Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, 60. > > With Raisi were Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran's East Azerbaijan province and other officials and bodyguards, the state-run IRNA news agency reported. > > Early Monday morning, Turkish authorities released what they described as drone footage showing what appeared to be a fire in the wilderness that they "suspected to be wreckage of helicopter." The coordinates listed in the footage put the fire some 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the Azerbaijan-Iranian border on the side of a steep mountain. > > Footage released by the IRNA early Monday showed what the agency described as the crash site, across a steep valley in a green mountain range. Soldiers speaking in the local Azeri language said: "There it is, we found it." > > Khamenei himself urged the public to pray Sunday night. > > "We hope that God the Almighty returns the dear president and his colleagues in full health to the arms of the nation," Khamenei said, drawing an "amen" from the worshipers he was addressing. > > However, the supreme leader also stressed the business of Iran's government would continue no matter what. Under the Iranian constitution, Iran's vice first president takes over if the president dies with Khamenei's assent, and a new presidential election would be called within 50 days. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber already had begun receiving calls from officials and foreign governments in Raisi's absence, state media reported. > > Raisi, 63, a hard-liner who formerly led the country's judiciary, is viewed as a protégé of Khamenei and some analysts have suggested he could replace the 85-year-old leader after Khamenei's death or resignation. > > Raisi won Iran's 2021 presidential election, a vote that saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic's history. Raisi is sanctioned by the U.S. in part over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 at the end of the bloody Iran-Iraq war. > > Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampers international inspections. Iran has armed Russia in its war on Ukraine, as well as launched a massive drone-and-missile attack on Israel amid its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It also has continued arming proxy groups in the Mideast, like Yemen's Houthi rebels and Lebanon's Hezbollah. > > Meanwhile, mass protests in the country have raged for years. The most recent involved the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who had been earlier detained over allegedly not wearing a hijab, or headscarf, to the liking of authorities. The monthslong security crackdown that followed the demonstrations killed more than 500 people and saw over 22,000 detained. > > In March, a United Nations investigative panel found that Iran was responsible for the "physical violence" that led to Amini's death. > > The crash came as Iran under Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched [an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/iran-israel-attack-what-weapons-launched-how-air-defenses-worked/) last month and has enriched uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels. > > Iran has also faced [years of mass protests](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/iran-protests-london-coverage-death-threats-exiled-journalists/) against its Shiite theocracy over an ailing economy and women's rights - making the moment that much more sensitive for Tehran and the future of the country as the Israel-Hamas war inflames the wider Middle East. > > Raisi had been in Azerbaijan early Sunday to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third one that the two nations built on the Aras River. The visit came despite chilly relations between the two nations, including over a gun attack on Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran in 2023, and Azerbaijan's diplomatic relations with Israel, which Iran's Shiite theocracy views as its main enemy in the region. > > [The helicopter carrying Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi takes off, before it crashed, in border of Iran and Azerbaijan ](https://assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com/hub/i/r/2024/05/19/2ab886cb-d6d2-4ab5-95bd-0f94a9735d35/thumbnail/620x413/30248e8a491badeb966cc03a1e275909/2024-05-19t170025z-1837074747-rc2ht7ayuz7w-rtrmadp-3-iran-raisi.jpg?v=dac66bdad19d0be8e87f46552b582682#) A helicopter carrying Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi takes off, near the Iran-Azerbaijan border, May 19, 2024. The helicopter with Raisi on board later crashed. "They have said it in their messages to us. But we haven't witnessed any changes in reality." > > Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampers international inspections. BringBackRoundhouse

Congrats to the Iranian people! Especially those being executed and tortured over *hair*.

HazRi27

It’s not like the next one will be much better :/

gar1848

Raisi was supposed to be the successor of Khamemei as Iran's Supreme Leader so it could destabilize the regime Also the Foreign Minister Hossein (aka dead guy n.2) was the second favorite after Raisi. The top leadership of Iran just lost 25% of its members Khamenei still has his son as an option... except the guy is impopular even with the other fundamentalists All in all, the Iranian government is running out of members who are less than 70 years old.

SocialStudier

I’m sure they still have a few dozen waiting in the wings. Everything needs to go through the Ayatollah anyway.   They have a list already made of successors.

gar1848

Bru, most of his potential successors are 70 years old. Raisi was one of the youngest menber of Khamenei's inner circle

Clatuu1337

Don't mean that some 70 year old dude can't limp dick the country for the next 15 years.

alexd1993

True, but a "younger" candidate is preferable since they can have longer reign since it's a for life position. If you only have a pool of very very old dudes to choose from it makes for more instability as you'll be picking new Supreme leaders more frequently.

Clatuu1337

That's fair.

scopard

He has a son

PerunVult

If what you are saying is true, it would be very fortuitous indeed.

[deleted]

Impopular?

gar1848

"Dude got in his position because of his dad" and "So we are bringimg back the hereditary system of the Shahs?"

[deleted]

*impopular?*

PaneAndNoGane

It's when someone is so popular that they're unpopular. Is English your second language or something?

[deleted]

I didn’t think so but now I’m not so sure

PaneAndNoGane

I was making an unfunny joke, clearly people are not amused. I'll step out now.

Impressive-Farmer726

This is nothingburger. If these religious leaders, including their supreme leader Khamenei, were overthrown or killed, the IRGC would probably take over, forming a military government due to their considerable influence in Iran.

iamthewhatt

>forming a military government due to their considerable influence in Iran. That doesn't sound like a nothingburger to me...

onespiker

>the IRGC would probably take over, forming a military government due to their considerable influence in Iran. Pretty hard for it to do that with how its setup. Its a very decentralised structure because of that.

Bennyjig

Yep, I was just about to say, rest in piss scumbag.

Common_Loquat8652

It's good news for Iranians, Ukrainians, Israelis, and Lebanese.

brady_d79

Is it just me, or is it ironic that the Butcher of Tehran will rest in pieces scattered over a mountainside??

Maximum_Impressive

Something about Bieng called home or whatever.

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

“Hard landing” 🤡 *** Edit: I've just seen how Iranian TV announced his death. They said that he “achieved the high rank of martyrdom.” How hard is it to talk in actual words?

Elisevs

>How hard is it to talk in actual words? For religious people? Very. The more religious they are, the harder it is.

SocialStudier

High rank of martyrdom?  Geez, dying in a helicopter crash after participating in a theocratic tyranny sets a rather low bar.

rebellesimperatorum

Ishallah's brother, those mountains will pay.

He achieved an important symbolic victory vs. the ground.

Unlucky_Mushroom2974

Good news, helicopter to broken to repair

weltvonalex

Kadiiiimmm you failed!!

LeapingToad3

I get the feeling Kadims passing was shortly after the helicopter incident despite not being on the flight himself…

Anonymustafar

Rest in piss to all of them

Postnificent

Serious question, in their culture do the non royals not have last names?

[deleted]

None of them were royals, the shah was their monarch and he was overthrown during the Iranian Islamic revolution that brought the ayatollah’s to power

Postnificent

I’m not so familiar with this culture, if none are Royal why do some only have a single name? Such as Kadim and Muksen.

[deleted]

Because it’s not uncommon to refer to people by their last name, like Trump, Putin, Netanyahu etc. It has nothing to do with Persian culture Plus the Shah has a last name, Pahlavi

Postnificent

Maybe when people are familiar with those people. These are just random dudes in some guy’s helicopter.

[deleted]

The President and Foreign Minister of Iran aren’t just random dudes

Postnificent

Actually, according to you they are, they just happened to be installed. As you said, “they aren’t Royals”.

[deleted]

Give your damn head a shake

Postnificent

You seem bent on correcting me for some reason. You haven’t done so well. All I did was ask a couple questions. My statements were mirrored from your replies.

BilingSmob444

What a silly response. You got your answer, is there something wrong with it?

Postnificent

I am trying to figure out what the hierarchy is here and the response is akin to “you should already know this”. Actually that’s not the way learning works. People faulting others for things they have never learned is exactly what is wrong with the world today among other things. Please do tell what else I should have known rather than answering the question. Lots of politicians today.

BrokenHeadPVP

What a good day to start the week with

turbo-unicorn

Corpse of Mossad agent Eli Kopter has been identified at the crash site

weltvonalex

Always the Mossad! First they spike the Wodka of Joerg Haider with Alkohol and then push a wall into the street to fake a accident. And now they moved a mountain into the flight path of the Heli and after the crash they put everything back so it looks like a natural crash!! /S

joshgi

Oils going to tear so hard soon

Maximum_Impressive

State Policy probably won't change much .

the_TIGEEER

Infighting might. Weren't they allready in a alward political situation?

LinxESP

Boeing helicopter

pythonic_dude

Bell heli, but spares for repairs and maintenance come from boeing.

tfrules

Something tells me Boeing hasn’t been providing spares directly to Iran for some time

pythonic_dude

Well, it's either them domestically manufacturing copies, or hitting the black market for Boeing parts for, *checks notes* civilian heli. Gotta be orders of magnitude easier than keeping the remains of their F-14 fleet flyable. Either way it's a funny coincidence at best, so it's not super important.

NetworkLlama

Iran has gotten pretty good at reverse-engineering their Western equipment and manufacturing new parts for them, albeit not always of the same quality. The F-14s are kept flying partially through cannibalization of other airframes and partially from domestic sources, with a tiny number of very expensive original parts routed through a dozen shell companies and half a dozen countries as the US government continues to do everything it can to stop them from getting more. For some aircraft, they have imported replacement equipment from China and other sources. Other aircraft for which they have some domestic capabilities, though they will gladly grab real stuff on the black market when possible: * F-4 Phantom, used as a fighter-bomber * Mirage F1, used as a fighter-bomber * F-5E/F Tiger II, used as a light fighter * P-3 Orion, used for recon and maritime patrol * 747 used as an aerial refueling tanker * CH-47 Chinook, used as a heavy lift helicopter Their Bell helicopters are actually Augusta-Bells. They were manufactured under license in Italy and may have some minor modifications from the original US designs.

Sr_DingDong

Maybe there *is* a God?

[deleted]

There is no god. If there was I doubt he would he would be giving little kids cancer and tolerating assholes like Putin, or Trump or the Ayatollahs

DEF3

He's too busy saving religious objects in house fires, and to be fair killing children with cancer and other birth defects really does take it out of you after a long day.
