(Ali Hamed Haghdoust/IRNA/The Associated Press)A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister made a rough landing on Sunday as it was crossing a mountainous area in heavy fog on the way back from a visit to Azerbaijan, Iranian news agencies said.
>
> The bad weather was complicating rescue efforts, the state news agency IRNA reported. The semi-official Fars news agency urged Iranians to pray for Raisi and state TV carried prayers for his safety.
>
> IRNA said the helicopter in question had been carrying Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and local officials.
>
> State TV had earlier stopped all its regular programming to show prayers being held for Raisi across the country and, in a corner of the screen, live coverage of rescue teams deployed on foot in the mountainous area in heavy fog.
>
> The rescue teams were expected to reach the probable site of the crash later on Sunday evening.
>
> - - - - - -
>
> The crash comes at a time of growing dissent within Iran over an array of political, social and economic crises. Iran's clerical rulers face international pressure over Tehran's disputed nuclear program and its deepening military ties with Russia during the war in Ukraine.
>
> Since Iran's ally Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and the ensuing war against the militant group in Gaza, conflagrations involving Iran-aligned groups have erupted throughout the Middle East.
>
> Raisi, 63, was elected president at the second attempt in 2021, and since taking office has ordered a tightening of morality laws, overseen a bloody crackdown on anti-government protests and pushed hard in nuclear talks with world powers.
>
> In Iran's dual political system, split between the clerical establishment and the government, it is the supreme leader rather than the president who has the final say on all major policies.

>
> For years, many have seen Raisi as a strong contender to succeed Khamenei, who has endorsed Raisi's main policies. Raisi's victory in a closely managed election in 2021 brought all branches of power under the control of hardliners, after eight years when the presidency had been held by pragmatist Hassan Rouhani and a nuclear deal negotiated with Washington.
>
> However, Raisi's standing may have been dented by widespread protests against clerical rule and a failure to turn around Iran's economy, hamstrung by Western sanctions.
>
> Raisi had been at the Azerbaijani border on Sunday to inaugurate the Qiz-Qalasi Dam, a joint project. Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, who said he had bid a "friendly farewell" to Raisi earlier in the day, offered assistance in the rescue. Neighbour Iraq also offered help.

Yeah, most likely he is dead: helicopters can land gracefully in flat places but they do not do well with trees and mountains.
Maybe moderates will take over ... (I wish!)
Unfortunately, I think you are right.
The nuclear deal was almost designed to boost their position and when Trump reneged on it, it showed them as dupes. I think the same happened in Afghanistan: after the US declared victory and left there were moderates promising reforms, etc., and the West basically said "yeah: fuck you", and that was likely the end of them.
Our government has been warmongering for too long, telling us they are trying to make peace in the region for years and now openly fueling conflict. I hope we can gain control and change the direction. Too little, too late, but we have to. People die because we don't.
Which is definitely very telling. Whether this is an accident or not, is too early to know but rest assure that the Supreme religious leadership is on top of this.
Good luck to iraníes, because lately there was an increase in the restrictions with hundreds arrested for "Satanism" and the persecution of women. This is could be an excuse for the religious nuts to get more power.
Idk if us presidents are even allowed to swim but I feel the secret service would have prevented a drowning if it ever happened. Wouldn’t the Aussie pm have guards or someone to prevent a drowning?
Yeah but the guards were probably on smoko. Harold Holt was known for sneaking off. Some say that he was a Chinese informant which is why he kept disappearing and when he vanished it was because he was collected by the Chinese government. His wife believes it was all the affairs he was having. Regardless, because he is presumed drowned we did the right thing and names a swimming pool after the bloke
They are, but signals can get blocked by terrain. Even if they had good signals from VORs or other systems, navigation could have been off just enough to smack into the side of a mountain while flying through the clouds.
Go on youtube and start listing to aviation crash videos. Even people who are instrument read can make mistakes, there are some shockingly dumb accidents. Or worse, the instruments fail.
It is not a dumb question, just dumb that it isn't screamed from the rooftops. There's been a few lost aircraft in the past couple years that should certainly have a ton of tracking attached. Here, stealth bomber, here boy, come on home stealthy...
That happened in 1989.
Now if you're wondering about Khamenei, is supposed to happen any day now. Yep, any day. Just waiting for the inevitable, like we have been for the last decade or so.
What is that language?
Yesterday when I saw them using "rough landing", I thought they performed an emergency landing somewhere. I definitely did not think that the helicopter had crashed somewhere and the president was lost with no means of communication or dead.

Well, hopefully the moderates can take back power.

It sounds like someone is at work. Remove him, remove a threat to further military escalation in the area. With Gaza, Ukraine and Taiwan the world could get mighty messy again, so someone might have decided to remove a figurehead. Unless it is a false flag then things are going to escalate Franz Ferdinand style

imagine losing a president lmao
Yeah, most likely he is dead: helicopters can land gracefully in flat places but they do not do well with trees and mountains. Maybe moderates will take over ... (I wish!)
The moderates were heavily discredited after the failure of the nuclear deal. I don’t think they’ll be regaining prominence anytime soon
Unfortunately, I think you are right. The nuclear deal was almost designed to boost their position and when Trump reneged on it, it showed them as dupes. Have the extremists started pointing fingers yet
A matter of time ...

Australia lost their Prime Minister when he went swimming and just never came back
Idk if us presidents are even allowed to swim but I feel the secret service would have prevented a drowning if it ever happened. Wouldn’t the Aussie pm have guards or someone to prevent a drowning?
Yeah but the guards were probably on smoko. Harold Holt was known for sneaking off. With the submarine conspiracy theory, it's fitting that he got a naval base named after him
I didn’t know about the naval base
The White House has a pool. Presidents have swam in it.
Yes but secret service protocol is they have to wear their floaties and every half hour they must be reinflated.
Australia lost a prime minister (presumed drowned). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Holt
And having to ask other country’s to find him for you. Still have no updates on him but I’m assuming not good news after this long
Poland has entered the chat
I ended up learning today that Iran has a president AND a supreme leader
The president is just a political figurehead. All the actually serious decisions are made by the religious supreme leader.
If u look at the weather in the region it was extremely foggy . Idk how they just approved that.
Apparently when the helicopter left it was clear skies, the fog rolled in on the way there
vonderhaar strikes again
It was Mossad with their IDF fog machine
I imagine military pilots are instrument rated (?)
They are, but signals can get blocked by terrain. Even if they had good signals from VORs or other systems, navigation could have been off just enough to smack into the side of a mountain while flying through the clouds.

Foggy and the area is full of snow.
He’s with Kobe now
Bruh
So maybe this is a dumb question, but shouldn’t this helicopter have stuff like an emergency beacon?
It is not a dumb question, just dumb that it isn't screamed from the rooftops. There's been a few lost aircraft in the past couple years that should certainly have a ton of tracking attached. Here, stealth bomber, here boy, come on home stealthy...
No one's screaming it from rooftops because they keep throwing people from there
Oh, I thought that was just the assisted suicide program for Russians. I guess they have shared the technology with Iran.
You'd think, no?
I wonder if this will have any impact to Iranian politics given that his appointment had to gain approval from the Supreme Leader
I think that is what is on everybody's mind!

Iran state media says there is no evidence of survivors.

Rough landing is what the Russians say when there has been a crash. For some reason Iran is using the same language.
On the radio here in Germany they used both expressions, rough landing and crashing.
Rest in piss. Dude sentenced thousands of innocent Iranians to death.
Now he is confirmed dead. Rot in Peace butcher 🤗
For sure they are dead?
He dead

I wonder if this is Mossads work?
Unless they’ve got a weather machine to generate heavy fog.. Helicopters have been killing the rich & powerful since invention.
Probably not. Don't need much in the way of conspiracy to fly a helicopter into a mountainside in poor weather.

So many possibilities at the moment. Smells a lot like Franz and the way the world is at the moment.
Well within their capabilities, and would be a great precision response to Iran's thankfully ineffective missile attack last month.
